Topaz Thimble - Uneven seams on sleeves

I was waiting until I won the credit card dispute to submit my review and share my experience with…read moreTopaz Thimble. To any bride considering Topaz Thimble for alterations, I encourage you to read this full review before handing over your gown to Kati. There are many seamstresses who provide better quality work and customer service. I paid Kati $500 to take my wedding dress and create a top that "looked" like what we discussed, but which had serious construction, quality and fit issues. I am now paying another seamstress to remediate all of the work that Kati called her "best work ever". I took my dress to be altered into a peplum style top. At the initial appointment, the dress was put on a mannequin and we discussed the changes to be made. I asked if I should try it on, but Kati stated it wasn't necessary. I thought it was strange that she didn't want to take measurements given we discussed that my wedding was 5 years and 2 kids ago. In hindsight, this was the first red flag. When I arrived for the final fitting, Kati's assistant answered the door and let me know that Kati was finishing up a few things. I waited for about 20 minutes while I could hear the sewing machine frantically whirring in the back. If more time was needed to finish the gown, I would have rather delayed the fitting than rush the work. This was the second red flag. Kati brought out the dress and it appeared as we had discussed. The only time that Kati touched the garment during my fitting was to help me snap and unsnap it. There was no "fitting", "checking" or "fussing" to make sure it was perfect. I paid and left the studio with the top. At home I tried it on again and took a closer look over the whole piece. The sleeves were not staying up because they did not have enough room in the shoulders. The buttons on the sleeve cuffs did not lay nicely as the material was bunching and they were attached unevenly. A seam on the peplum skirt had the horsehair trim raw, jagged and sticking out. Most concerning, the seams and construction throughout were uneven and messy. I emailed Kati regarding this issues and we scheduled a date to come back. My gut however was telling me to get a second opinion. I am not an avid sewer, however I have completed multiple sewing projects, and the quality of work was nothing that I would expect from a professional seamstress. I took the top to a second bridal seamstress with over 25 years of experience. The seamstress identified a plethora of areas where the work was either not completed correctly or was poorly executed. Ultimately she felt it came down to inexperience and rushed work. I feel taken advantage of knowing that Kati let me walk out of her studio with a garment that had blatant craftsmanship issues, and I do wonder how many brides leave Topaz Thimble with poor quality alterations to their gowns. In summary, the following issues were noted: - Seams throughout are messy and incorrectly executed - Sleeves and peplum skirt were incorrectly constructed - Thread color used did not match the rest of the dress - All horsehair seam edges were left raw and unfinished - Appliques were incorrectly connected and causing bunching - Time and effort were not taken to construct proper seams between the sleeve and the strap, as well as between the bodice and the peplum skirt, resulting in bunched and uneven seams. After meeting with the other seamstress, I emailed Kati explaining that I did not feel comfortable returning to Topaz Thimble to have the work corrected. I requested a refund to help cover the cost of the remediation work. In her response, Kati refused to acknowledge the issues identified and refused to provide any type of refund. Kati stated that I was not a sewing expert and stopped responding to any follow up from my side. I submitted a dispute to my credit card company citing "unsatisfactory quality for services rendered" and included all correspondence. After reviewing the case, the bank sided with me and refunded my money. I feel this speaks to the credibility of the review. Overall, when choosing someone to work on one of the most important garments in your life, I recommend you choose someone who has an immense amount of experience and attention to detail. Find someone who will not cut corners, and most importantly, someone who is kind and customer focused. You will not find this with Topaz Thimble.

I was in a bit of a time crunch and thought she was my only option. After trying on my 2 dresses she gave me astronomical quotes for what it would be. I immediately regretted it, but didn't think I had any other option so I paid the $519.95 that was asked. After I got home I realized that that really wasn't a feasible option for me, especially being a single mother. I went back to Minh at 11:00 am the very next day and asked for only one of the 2 dresses back and explained that it was just way out of my budget. She then told me I could have my dress but I had to pay her 50% of the quoted amount. That quoted amount was $300 for a hem and taking the bust area in about an inch. I told her I was only taking one dress, not both. She did not care. She said she already did a service. She was rude and her husband even said "You have to pay her". I BEGGED her not to do that. She said its her policy and her sign says "Cancellations are subject to 50% fee". While I completely understand having policies in place, she didn't even have my dress for 24 hours. Not a stitch or cut or any alterations were done at all. I also informed her that the sign says SUBJECT TO which does not mean she HAS to charge me that. It is a discretionary amount. I told her I would pay a consultation fee or something that would equate to the 30 minutes of time I spent in her store but she said NO. The charge was absolutely egregious. I was literally robbed. I will never be ok with what she did. I will never recommend her to a single person ever. My 73 year old Mom went to the store to ask them to show me some grace and give me my money back and they called the police on my mom and physically put her hands on and shoved my mother. This family is the highest level of disturbing and should be shut down. Side note, there was a gentleman in the store that heard me literally sobs and cries for help and even offered to pay for me. I just want him to know that he was a sweet sweet man and that meant so much to me, but that woman doesn't deserve a dime of anyone's money. I would like the $250 back that she charged me to hold my dresses for 17 hours. I also want to emphasize that I was really overwhelmed and felt like I had no other option. I needed one dress within the next 3 weeks. AND I was only trying to ask for one of the two dresses back. I was still supporting her business.
