This place is definitely more expensive than it probably should be as stated by other reviewers. However, they do have a huge selection and the customer service is great. I've been to plenty of record shops with pretentious cashiers that gatekeep all of their favorite music and any small talk you make with them consists of them trying to expose you as a fake fan of a band you love. That's never a fun experience. I found Joni Mitchell and Mingus for a decent price and if you do a thorough sift through the bins, you'll find some deals. read more

Overpriced. Sure they have a decent selection but I've seen the same records in there for the past few years, which means they're not moving and nobody is falling for $20 records that you could find elsewhere for $1-2. Maybe they're holding out for some naive Marin techie who doesn't know what records should cost and blindly accept their inflated price. Always some disgruntled boomer/gen X cusp employee who has utter disdain for their customers, and an odd no cell phone policy but will blast music inside at a volume that is uncomfortable. Was in town to visit some family last week and decided to check out Red Devil. Really cool shop, a bit tight but it wasn't busy when I was in. I could see it getting a bit busier and being hard to get through. They had a great selection of everything, but was really stoked on their solid selection of old and new jazz back in the far right. They also have a really cool limited edition section that you can peruse through and find some really good stuff if that's your thing. Certainly didn't feel rushed and could do my thing and if I had questions the staff was super accommodating...but not pushy at all. read more

Guess I should have read the reviews before going here, because pretty much everything people have said is correct. This place has a huge selection of hard to find records, but there are a few major problems: 1) everything is way overpriced (average $12-$25 over for most records). 2) The owner is RUDE--my dad asked him about record players and the man treated my dad like dirt, talking down to him continuously--my dad left the shop almost immediately. 3) We looked at the prices on what we had pulled and found them too high, put them back, and went to leave--the owner looked super freaked out as I wen to leave and asked me in a panic "where are they??" As the looked me over frantically. When I pointed back to the shelf and told him we put them back, he immediately rushed out from behind the counter and went to look for them, basically acting like I was stealing something (where am I going to put them? In my super tiny purse? Under my tight shirt...?). Overall, poor experience that made me feel dirty and offended. Don't bother with this one... read more

My favorite record store. I almost always arrive looking for 2 or 3 records I've read good reviews of and then I find 4 or 5 more that I haven't heard of or have been looking for unsuccessfully. My wife and I had the pleasant experience of browsing Red Devil Records in Downtown San Rafael. They had a great selection of every genre of music you could think of for vinyls, CDs, cassettes, etc. Staff was very friendly and helpful as well. Definitely going to be back read more

Hey! If you like being ignored and being told that they can order what's not in the store only to find out that they guy working there couldn't care less, then this is the place for you. After being told that I had to leave my bags near the counter, I told the guy that this was my first time in the store who then responded quite insincerely, "Welcome"; this man is the epitome of the music snob in High Fidelity and this is coming from a person who's actually been to the High Fidelity record store on the East Coast, and actually had better customer service than this place. Red Devil Records is quite an appropriate name for this place because it has so many treasures but the person working there couldn't care less about them or the people that come in. It's quite unfortunate to see someone working with the public who enjoys reading more than interacting and helping customers. I guess some places are meant to be ignored. read more

Highly recommend to anyone who likes music, The prices there aren't that bad it's around $26 $33 and they probably have cheaper ones if you look though them or ask. I loved this place back when it was still in Petaluma. I remember pouring over the vinyl and always finding hidden gems - 7 inches and singles of bands that I loved, and I could never find them elsewhere. Fond fond memories. Now when I think of this store, I'm more than bitter. I don't understand why it had to relocate, and to San Rafael of all places. I too, along with other Yelpers, thought Barry was a bit jerk status, so whenever I need a music fix, I prefer to trek out to Santa Rosa for some good old record store action (something Petaluma could really use). read more

He grudgingly relaxed that policy this morning, but was obviously not happy about it and only relented when I told him I had no cash on me and would be going elsewhere. I've bought and sold records for 20 years, as my primary source of income for a large part of that so i'm not a stranger to some of the rougher personalities that are a part of this business. No one has every accused me of being thin skinned but Barry will never get a single dollar from me again. First ran into him 15ish years ago when he was located in Petaluma. Despite him having a sign out front about not allowing cell phones in his store, it didn't stop him from spending the whole time on his phone while we were shopping. He was talking to someone about all the stuff he had scored at KUSF swap the day before and was bragging about how much he had underpaid because the vendors didnt know what they had and how much he was going to mark them up. I was pretty shocked that he was tipping his hands to me about underpaying on his buys (strike 1) and then not bothering to pass good deals on to his customers (strike 2). The only time he put his phone down in the first thirty minutes we were there was to snap "THOSE AREN'T FOR SALE" at my wife for flipping through some 7"s. (Then why are they on the floor Barry...? Strike 3....). Despite his prices all being insanely high, I really try to never leave a record store empty handed since I know what it feels like to be on the other side of the counter scrambling to keep the lights on... so Barry finally ends his call and I approach the counter with a beat up overpriced reissue of an industrial record from the 70s and say "Pretty neat to find this record here today" and Barry quips back "I guess you think you are the only person in this town who knows what that record is"? Nice Barry, real nice. Strike 4. Guy is one of those textbook psychos that gets defensive just from friendly conversation. I waited ten years to give him another chance mainly because my friend told me the store was struggling and that statute of limitations had worn off. Sad to report old Barry was just as intolerable as ever. This time after a few rounds of short temper responses I just split. No need to stick to my principles about finding something to buy here, i'm not interested in helping him stay in business. If you are reading this review because you are looking for a place to sell your collection, try The Last Record store in Santa Rosa or Amoeba in SF. Heck, if you have a nice collection there are a lot of serious sellers like Daybreak out of Seattle who will come to you, pay fairly, and treat you with respect. Don't line this guys pockets while he laughs behind your back about how stupid you are. read more

Selection is decent and there are some nicely-priced jazz and rock records. Overall I think prices are 20-40% more than I'd want to pay for jazz and punk LPs. Also, the owner seemed genuinely annoyed with the questions I asked - I buy records 2-3 times a month, but I typically only hit up this place once a year or two. It's similar to Mod Lang in El Cerrito - owner just does not seem that happy to be running a record shop. read more

Got a bad vibe. 4 years later I venture in here, and the clerk, and owner apparently, Barry, could not act any more difficult to deal with. Getting questions answered was like pulling teeth. It seems he is trying to capture the tough guy anti-social punk aesthetic, but it doesn't fit a business setting. Every question I asked was a sharp hollow answer with no follow up and he seemed to not care about making a sale. I did find some records I was interested in, but the prices were way too high. I went to pick up a gift for my brother at Red Devil Records in San Rafael and the salesman, Barry Lazarus, was HIDEOUSLY rude...at Christmas. I will never darken the doorway again and I will let everyone else know that there are other places to get vinyl where people are actually polite and WANT your business more than they feel like they need to be a "cool hipster" . I wish I could give this place a LOWER review. Barry, maybe just let your patrons know about your in store policy on cell phones rather than cranking up garage rock so they can't hear themselves think....just say, "I'm sorry, this is our policy.." Always getting in new vinyl. Lots of hard to find older releases. Good blues, jazz, rock, metal, and punk selections. Not a big store, but very good. Get on the email list, as this will let you know when interesting releases come in. There is something good every week. This is not some corporate store. If the owner doesn't greet you like a peppy Walmart greeter, get over it. He's fine. He knows a lot about records. Seems like what you want in a guy who owns a record store. Barry took one look at me and actually cranked the volume on the shop stereo. Sure enough, the baby woke up and I had to leave. (now THAT would be service) It's only a record store, I mean I think people take things way too seriously sometimes. He probably either used to be pretty chill and Marin turned him into a douche, or it's just heredity. Either way it's not his fault. This is the bay area. Be tolerant people. There's a CD(might be on vinyl too) by poison idea called "record collectors are pretentious assholes", pretty much sums it up. Now don't get me wrong, I do like it though. It's the perfect record store for it's time and place. It just fits right in there on 4th st perfectly. I've scored several accused CDs there that I listen to regularly. And they do have some pretty rare vinyl, it's very pricy though. But then again you have to figure if you're going to go to amoeba you're going to have to pay for gas,bridge tolls, parking, not to mention the time it takes to get out there. So maybe it's not that much more expensive after all. My major criticism is the CD selection is very limited, and does not change. I've pretty much bought all the CDs they have I that I want. I'll go in there every two or there months and it's usually the same stuff. That might be good though, God knows if amoeba opened a store on 4th I'd probably end up living on ramen. All things considered I prefer Watts music, but this place really isn't bad at all for what it is. read more

I've been into Red Devil Records a few times over the past couple years, and have had no issues whatsoever with Barry. The store always seems fairly well organized, clean, and has a great selection. The music which is typically playing is always nice, and makes you wonder what it is. My only real qualm is that the selection is pretty biased. You will find a ton of oldies, classic rock, jazz, punk, and a bit of metal. The rap/hip-hop selection is around 30 items, and I wish there was a bit more of it. That being said, what Barry does carry in this genre is all really good stuff. Pricing seems reasonable seeing as it's a smaller shop, but you will definitely find some deals. read more

This is simply a fabulous store for records you can't find anywhere else. For the regular stuff you can order on Amazon - do so, because it's more expensive here. HOWEVER! Every genre here is represented by deep cuts - Dub Reggae, '80s hardcore, used classic rock, used and new Jazz, and an excellent audiophile collection of all the must have staples (Miles Davis, Beatles, Etc.). And the best part: the "you can't find these anywhere else" first/limited pressings on the wall. The owner knows his stuff. And there is a wonderful selection of punk rock 7" inch vinyl. Wow, owner is super rude. Is he the red devil? I was thrilled to find a record store still going strong in the area but was quickly discouraged with the attitude of the owner. He seemed legitimately annoyed that I was in his shop and every time I asked a question, he answered with such disdain. I will not return, the environment is not welcoming whatsoever. His prices are also the highest I've ever seen for vinyl, but that's probably why his store is still alive. read more
