I am considering selling a couple of pieces of gold jewelry and was hoping to get estimates. I also have a ring that needs to be reshaped and possibly resized, and a necklace I want shortened. The jewelry was inspected but not weighed, and the price quoted was probably 1/4 of what I received from other places. They criticized the ring and initially told me it was chipped, which it was not, and said the time and cost to cut a simple gold chain would be high and take a long time. Based on the customer experience, I would never go back. Take your time and shop around, as there are a lot of better options, including The Gold Drop in San Rafael, and Prince in Sausalito, both of which excelled at customer service and provided much better pricing.

I had taken jewelry here before to have appraised and sold and had been satisfied, so I decided to…read moreuse them again. I brought in about 20 pieces, mostly gold and silver rings. They called the next day saying the appraisal was finished. The woman at the counter brought me the tray of my jewelry and said that I had 14K and 14K gold plated jewelry and offered me a price. I told her that I knew a few of the pieces were above 14K, including 3 that were 24K, and she replied that the guy, who was eating his lunch, had tested them. I took out the ones I knew to be "pure", the guy looked at them, and proceeded to give me a lecture on how to recognize 24K (I had bought these pieces years ago BECAUSE they were 24K). It was obvious that he hadn't tested, or even looked at, all my jewelry and had probably assumed that everything was the usual 10 or 14K. He "re"tested those that I questioned and admitted that I was correct. This bumped up the price over $200! Bottom line: Know something about what you've got before going into any jewelry appraiser. I will not be using SR Rare Coin for any more of my appraisals/sales.
