Today I took a rainy drive to Carmichael to the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. Parking was easy, but…read moreI didn't get the closest spot to the door this time. The Sacramento Fine Arts Center was extremely busy today, as you can tell by the number of cars in their parking lot. People were meeting with the director going over the available space and others were in the galleries. They have a nice gallery with filled with local artists artwork. They are all juried so you only get to see the best of the best of local artists. Today's painting with paper class was taught by Carol Hawkins. She teaches a monthly classes and plans them out a year in advance so you can get the dates from her. They are monthly on a Friday from 1-4pm. And $75 for the class. She takes Cash or Check. It includes all of this supplies. It's the only way I take classes these days. Buying your own supplies is over rated. You end up with extra supplies you will never use and a total waste of money. That's why I keep coming back for her classes. 1-4pm is the perfect time, you miss most of the traffic and it's during the day light. The only issue is trying to get time off from work, which is tricky. I do treasure my time taking art classes and I find this painting with paper class very enjoyable. I always come home with a wonderful piece of finished artwork. Not all classes are like this. Some classes they don't give you enough time to finish your projects so you end up with a pile of unfinished projects in the back of your closet. This isn't an easy class. You have to have a vision and work fast. There is some time to chit chat, but you also need to be very focused. It takes just the right artist to take this class. Carol also teaches an acrylic class on Saturdays twice a month 1-3pm. It's $35 All supplies included except for the canvas. She asks that you bring a 12x12 or a 11x14 canvas. I got a great deal on a pack of them at Hobby Lobby on sale. I need to take another acrylic class as I have several canvases pre purchased for the class. I don't need to get time off from work to go to the class, but I hate to spend the time away from my family on the weekend. I need to work on balance. I really love taking art classes and it's not always easy finding a good class that work into my schedule. I've taken so many art classes over the years that I've run out of wall space so now I have a gallery in my garage. Our garage is painted a light lavender color as that was the paint that they had on sale at Lowes. It's a great backdrop to my gallery. I hang up my painting with push pins to keep them secure. It works well for the light stretched canvases. The Sacramento FIne Arts Center also has a full community kitchen. I had lunch in it today. I brought my Tupperware full of delicious leftovers and used their microwave. They also have community coffeemakers so you can make several pots at a time for a gallery event. You are welcome to use their kitchen, just leave it how you found it or even cleaner. I hope to see you at the Sacramento Fine Arts center for the next painting with paper class or maybe we can surprise each other and show up at the acrylic class.

In my search it was tough finding classes that are offered after work or weekends and this class fit my schedule. Very diverse group of students and awesome teacher. So we were more than grateful when he decided to accept our son for one-on-one tutoring. Thomas was behind in his reading skills when he first came to Mr. Summers. He was reading slightly below his grade level. Now, thanks to his tutoring, my son is reading above his grade level. We were also very pleased that Mr. Summers was so understanding and generous with his time. He was always willing to help Thomas finish his assignments, even when Thomas needed a few extra minutes after his time with him ended. Mr. Summers has a unique capacity to understand kids very well. Our son responded so positively to his empathy. We were fortunate to run into Mr. Summers as a teacher and I would highly recommend him to any parent.

Mr. Summers welcomed her into the class right away. He somehow made Zoom school fun and engaging. He recognized that my child was writing above her grade level and called me and had a long conversation about the many ways he could challenge her academically. He is skilled at differentiating teaching to challenge and support students of all learning levels. He paid close attention to my child's social and emotional needs as well. He is very empathetic and kind and gentle with his students, and I would find myself listening in on the class, just because he was so sweet and funny and so very kind. If he was offering tutoring services here in San Francisco, both of my children would be enrolled. I cannot say enough wonderful things about him as a person and as a teacher.

This is basically a Japanese elementary school for children with Japanese parents living in the…read moreSacramento Region. This school does not accept all students and the child must be interviewed and tested before being accepted to the school. There is generally a higher number of students who apply for the school than they can admit. My son has been going here for three years, the classes are on Saturday from 8:30AM - 12:30PM. Its a combination of classroom activities such as reading and writing Japanese, culture, food, exercise, etc. Everything you would experience in a real Japanese elementary school. All the classes are conducted entirely in Japanese, so this is not a place for a student looking to start learning Japanese as a beginner. Every year there is an Undokai event. This is the traditional "sports day" that Japanese elementary schools put on for their students. Undokai consists of a variety of events, such as tug of war, running, scripted movements. Its really difficult to explain Undokai without actually watching it. This event really fosters the Japanese spirit and the closeness of their culture. Tuition is $75 a month, I usually pay about $650 per year. You are required to pay tuition all year even if you plan to be gone for a few months on vacation. This is necessary because the school would not be able to maintain itself if parents stopped paying for a few months because they went to Japan. Parents are required to be helpers at the school and taken on different responsibilities. The parents do not teach classes, but help with administrative duties, setting up events, tearing down events, cleanup, preparing foods, and storing items at their house (such as balls for Undokai). My son loves the school and enjoys seeing all his friends there. I will also be enrolling my daughter this year. If you have children who speak Japanese, this is the school for you in the Sacramento area!

In addition to being named a National School of Distinction in the Performing and Fine Arts, The Performing and Fine Arts Academy has been regularly recognized in the local community through Elly (recognizing outstanding theatre in the Sacramento area) nominations and awards, participation in the Jammies (music recognition program for students), and many other events. All of our students are taught by arts teachers who continue to be professional practicing artists in the community, allowing students to learn not only the technical aspects of artistic expression, but also what it is like to be a professional practicing artist. Academically, our students excel. Our academic teachers are highly trained and our courses are rigorous. Even with the rigor of our courses, the Academy routinely has over 70% of its students on the honor roll. Many high school seniors go on to prestigious four year universities and art schools.
