For an early Thursday night this place was packed. They offer a fantastic Happy Hour with both drinks & food. We ordered the French fries, chicken quesadilla, and fried shrimp. All were good but the quesadilla came out cold. The spicy margarita was fantastic! Service was friendly and fast. The chairs at the bar need to be replaced. They are too short for the bar and made of fabric which doesn't enable them to be cleaned. Overall, the place was great and I would definitely return. read more

I've been dining at Red Drum for over twenty years, long enough to remember when a last-minute reservation on a Tuesday felt like winning the lottery. So when my family and I received some truly remarkable medical news this week, the kind of victory you save for a proper toast, Red Drum was the obvious choice. What better place to celebrate a long-awaited milestone than with familiar faces and a pork chop I've trusted since the era of dial-up internet? Well. About that pork chop. Two of us ordered the longtime menu staple. We expected the same giant, butcher's-best chop that has anchored the plate forever. What arrived instead felt like someone had rewritten a classic without reading the original. Gone were the lovely fresh tomatoes and potatoes, the bright bites that used to sing alongside the chop, along with the subtle demi that once tied everything together. In their place, Brussels sprouts were doing a full backstroke in an acid bath. And not, unfortunately, the fun kind of acid bath. I would have been fine with the sprouts but this sauce... The sauce was so sharp and dominant that it steamrolled the pork entirely. Since it made up the entire base of the dish, there was no escaping it. I later learned there were supposed to be potatoes mixed in, hash-style, but my portion must have pulled a vanishing act because not a single potato was found. My dining partner fared no better. Between the two of us, the equivalent of an entire pork chop went back to the kitchen. When we told our server the sauce tasted "off," she reacted with all the urgency of someone being told their shoelace is untied. There was no concern, no apology, and no curiosity. Our third diner ordered the salmon. He said it was very good, and the corn pudding was too, but even he missed the potato that used to round out the plate. For forty-one dollars, he said the meal felt "undercut," and I agree. When the most satisfied person at the table feels shorted, that is not great. Dessert was a bright spot. The hot butter rum toffee and the doughnuts hit the mark. By then, however, I was too busy fuming, more effectively than the pork, over the indifference that hung over the whole evening. No manager ever came by. I am not convinced our feedback reached anyone. By the time the bill arrived, it felt like our waitress wanted us to pay, smile, and scurry along. This was when the night took another strange turn. As she handed me the check, I asked about a familiar husband and wife duo who had served at Red Drum for years. They were beloved, memorable, and unmistakably professional. Anyone who has eaten at Red Drum even semi-regularly knows exactly who I mean. They were fixtures. I asked if they were working that night so I could say hello. The waitress casually told me they had been gone for some time and had left under "not good circumstances." That was when my eyebrows reached escape velocity. If you know Red Drum, the Red Drum of years past, you know that couple. You know the level of professionalism, the consistency, and the connection they brought to the room. You know they were not the "leave under not good circumstances" type. The comment felt off, unnecessary, and frankly a little concerning. It made me wonder what has really changed behind the scenes and what regulars will think when they read this. By then, curiosity pushed me to look around the room. It was nearly empty. It was 6:45 p.m. on a Tuesday. Yes, a weeknight, but dinner hour all the same. In years past, this place buzzed no matter the night. You could not get a last-minute reservation without divine intervention. Suddenly the ease of getting one this time made a whole lot more sense. I genuinely wanted this to be a triumphant return, a full-circle moment after a long illness and a day of wonderful news. Instead, it was a sobering reminder that somewhere along the way, Red Drum lost the plot, and maybe a lot more than its potatoes. After reflecting on our experience, I called the restaurant to share my concerns, but three business days have passed without a return call. read more

I haven't been to Ruru in years, but returned last month for a work dinner. We were sat in the back room with the wine cellar, which was really cool but incredibly loud. The appetizers were all wonderful, including the fried shrimp, which was addicting. The fish was well cooked with creamy mash. I have heard great things about this place, but I didn't have the same experience. The menu is very expensive for the amount of food that you get and when I went, they were out of three items that I was looking to get. I ended up with the blackened fish tacos, which was good fish, but the taco didn't have very much flavoring. For $24 it was two fish tacos, and a side of fries. The main dining room was closed for a private event so the servers were a little preoccupied and it took a while for us to get the food. I might have to try this on a different day. read more

Red Drum is another restaurant for a pork chop. It's consistently delicious and they new menu pairs it with a slaw. But, we still choose mashed potatoes. I got the grilled salmon and it was perfect. The other fish is their Smoked short rib ragu Papardelle. If you haven't been, you have to give it a try. Homemade tortilla chips and the fries are so good! read more

I cannot believe I waited so long to eat here! I loved absolutely everything I had. The chicken was tender and flavorful and the potatoes were creamy with the perfect amount of seasoning. The real show stopper here though was the Crab Nachos ... they were a special so if you don't get the pleasure come back and keep checking for them! I will probably dream about those forever. It's a low key place in the Shem Creek area but away from all the chaos of Shem. Perfect for group dining or date night. We heard good things about this Restaurant so we gave it a try. We had 2 grilled chicken sandwiches, a grilled chicken salad and fish tacos. The Grilled Chicken was overcooked and dry. The Fish Tacos came with only 2. The fries were shoestring and obviously out of a frozen bag and cold. The fish tacos were reported by the diner as ok, not much flavor. Throw in 1 ice tea, 3 waters and you have $198.00. Almost forgot, the table was not clean at all. Won't be back. For the money we spent we could have went to many different places and had a much better experience. In fairness, I did forget to mention we had 2 appetizers the fried shrimp and salmon. Outstanding food and service. Bread cost $9.00. I ordered a Johnny Walker Black scotch on the rocks listed at $14 on the menu. Was charged $18 and some cents. When I questioned the price on the tab the waitress checked and returned with the explanation that when I ordered on the rocks they added more whiskey and charged more for that reason. They should add to the drink menu that drinks on the rocks will cost more. It just wasn't worth it to complain to the manager. Great restaurant but I'll think twice about returning when a scotch goes from $14 to more than $18 because it's on the rocks. read more

We ordered 3 things. Every single item was terrible. First we ordered the chips and salsa as an appetizer. It comes with 2 salsas. Each was so hot neither of us could eat it. (Not afraid of hot...include jalapeños in a lot of our meal prep). As entrees we ordered the tile fish and my husband ordered the enchiladas. One bite of the fish and it was a great big NO. Maybe it was old, I'm not sure but definitely inedible. The enchiladas were pretty bad...heavy taste of cinnamon and not much else. All around a bad night...pretty hard to strike out at a restaurant that is supposed to be decent. There are too many good places to eat in this area. No need to waste an evening here. read more

$$$LESSON LEARNED!!!! You no that thing that Yelp tries to help you with as far as pricing? When they have the dollar signs illustrated to show you how expensive or not expensive for places? I'm just browsing through pictures liking what I've seen and saving restaurants on my collections. $$$ Paying no mind to the dollar signs that are trying to warn me. And it cost me tonight. I'm taking my son out for his birthday and we're all sitting down at the table looking at the menu. This is the fourth place we've been to because every restaurant we were at was booked up for a whole hour. $$$ This was the only restaurant we found that we can be seated in 40 minutes or less. Is Charleston be coming overcrowded or was it the holiday traffic? Anywho the three of us looked at the menus and made eye contact with each other immediately. All eyes saying "What did we just walked into"?Which immediately went to"Nah Dad, What did "you" just walked into". Lmao. But we powered through $$$ . The menus pretty limited which means that and the pricing says they are very good at the few things they do. So SHOW ME THE MONEY!!! Show me reasons your so expensive. First of all this valet parking don't see that everywhere. Second of all there's a bodyguard but some people will call a bouncer. You don't see that everywhere. There's two guys walking around checking on everybody making sure everything's all right continuously. One guy looks like the muscle for the soprano family he's wearing Adidas sambas. The other guys wearing a pair of vans and cracking jokes more like Dad jokes to everybody. I know money when I see money and their tenants are not discussing anything these have to be the owners. Owners checking on tables?? don't see that everyday. Then there was the fresh smell of seafood throughout the building. $$$ That is always a winner with me letting me know I'm in the right place. So I'm starting to really understand things. I really wanted to try the chicken quesadillas I keep seeing on the pictures. This place has been on my list for over a year. They came out they were not as pretty as the pictures I saw but I got to admit they were pretty damn good. You only get six but they're nothing like I've ever tasted. I cannot put my finger on these fries they're so hard to describe. I think they're homemade but not sure. Very stringy and well seasoned. There's a flavor coming from them that almost feels like they were soaked in this flavor. It doesn't come off as something sprinkled on them. I can't put my finger on them but you definitely want to eat these with a fork they are so damn good. The chicken sandwich had an extremely salty salsa but that buttermilk fried chicken was rocking. The grill chicken sandwich taste like the chicken was fresh off The grill in the backyard. $$$ Chef's kiss. The burger seem to have a high quality of beef. So I guess they do what they do and do that extremely high clip. I was definitely pleased with everything. I want a glass of wine so bad. But could not bring myself to pay $18 for a glass of chardonnay. I will be back after scratching off the winning scratch off. $$$ read more

Incredible dinner on the patio at 8pm. We sat by ourselves (table of 3) with surrounding heaters that took the chill of the night. 70's music playing in the background (Earth, Wind and Fire) and then some Van Morrison. Set the mood for a happy dining experience! Our waiter was a PRO and brought us everything we needed before we asked! Can't recall his name but he was absolutely charming and polite! My husband and daughter ordered the cheeseburger with fries. They both were happy and the fries were addictive! My seared scallops were perfectly cooked and the grits were stone cut and had a nice texture. Definitely cooked with heavy cream which is a must. The corn salsa made the dish over-the-top. After reviewing several options, we made a reservation for two at Red Drum Restaurant on a Saturday night--and we're glad we did. From start to finish, the experience was both pleasant and enjoyable. The service was outstanding--attentive without being overbearing--and the food did not disappoint. We ordered an appetizer, entrées, and dessert, all of which were very well-prepared and full of flavor. Red Drum has certainly earned a place on our list of go-to restaurants when we're in Mount Pleasant. IT was for me and my brother's birthday and we were seated in the wine cellar room which is so cool. What a great expereince from start to finish. The room is quiet and spacious. Our 12 top had plenty of room. The food was spectacular actually. Started with Shishito peppers which were devine. Followed by the skirt steak with green beans and sweet potato fries. Yum! The steak was cooked perfectly and had a great flavor profile. Finished off with the lava cake with ice cream and a candle. So good. Our server was on top of everything and really made sure we were all happy and checked on us often. I have not been here in years but I won't let that happen again. Great night out! read more

One of my favorite happy hour spots in town that I probably frequent way too much, is @thereddrum in Mt. Pleasant. They have good deals on specialty cocktails, wine, beer as well as a nice variety of appetizers on the happy hour menu. They also have the best bartenders who are so professional and friendly and make it a point to remember the customers names and drink orders. First, I will start off with my favorite appetizer from them, and it is the Shrimp Quesadilla with the oh so good, red voodoo sauce. I always try to order an extra side of that voodoo sauce because it is so yummy. Also posted is the chicken version of their quesadilla with black oaxacan chile sauce, also very good. Next are their Potato Flautas that were stuffed with mashed potatoes, bacon & cheese. The flautas aren't my favorite because they have a heavy smoke flavor, and I am not a fan of smoky food items, but if you like that taste, you would love them! Such a generous portion and very filling. When my friends and I go to happy hour at Red Drum, we also like to split a basked of their happy hour fries. They are thin cut, sprinkled with cheese and cooked to perfection and are plenty enough to share! And lastly, if I am really hungry, I will order their happy hour burger. It's the perfect portion for me and it comes with a ton of fries. It's delicious and definitely one of the best deals on their happy hour menu. read more

A basic good smash burger, I usually don't like smash burgers. A burger is supposed to be thick and juicy inside like her. But they cooked it right so she had a lil juice. fries were hot. Can't believe I'm saying this but the fries were a lil too salty. But hot and crispy. I do think it was a lil too pricey for a single burger, fries and a can soda $18. I have enjoyed going to RD many times. The night started out well with excellent margaritas and appetizers. my scallop entree was delivered, which looked overcooked and on the small side. The real problem was they were salted too much to eat. I had one bite, and could not eat it them. I passed this on to our waiter and manager. The problem was when I received the tab, which included a charge of $38 for the scallops . I was shocked and did not want to cause a scene, however, nice restaurants should not charge customers for poor food quality, and something I could not eat.... read more

I was so happy to finally check this place out as many people have recommended it. It was quite unassuming from the outside but the level of professionalism and food quality is awesome. I love their outside seating, even if its on a busy road. It's very cozy inside as well. Their portions are quite large so I was fine with 2 appetizers, 1 being shared with the table. Their shishito peppers were refreshing and the tuna was awesome. I highly recommend this restaurant. There is a private parking lot, its a bit small so there is some street parking down the street if needed. read more

I just had dinner at Red Drum. We had such a great experience! The food was so good. I had the pork chop, my friends had the scallops, fried chicken tacos and the fried shrimp app- my friends said that there were so many shrimp it was enough for dinner! Our server , Cleary, was amazing. She didn't rush us and was very attentive as were the servers filling our water and helping bring our food despite the restaurant having private Christmas parties in the other rooms. One of my favorite restaurants in Mt P! Sit out on the patio if it is a nice day or night. Cocktails are delicious - lemon drop martini, espresso martini and the margarita our the top drinks we always order Chips, salsa and guac are a must to start with... chips are always warm and guac is so fresh. Fried shrimp are also a good app! My FAVORITE flank steak ever, ever. They just recently took it off the menu because of the increasing prices of meat. Hoping it comes back soon! Mashed potatoes are a must if you get a steak, so yum The pork chop is also a 10/10 & delicious, we always split this and the steak Scallops are a great size and the portion size is also great... very delicious if you like seafood Fish tacos were a great size piece of fish in each taco and it was grouper the night we went recently... fresh and yummy Portion sizes are great and you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu! The burger and chicken sandwich are what we normally get when we aren't starving and both are great. HH at the bar area is great and normally you can get a reservation same day or walk in for a table (sometimes might be a little bit of a wait). We had a delicious brunch at Red Drum today. I had a mimosa and mom had a Bloody Mary. The mimosa was a good size ($8). We started with the smoked salmon dip that was very good. The chips were fresh and hot. For my meal, I had the shrimp and grits. Definitely the winner! It was absolutely delicious with a nice portion of shrimp. Mom had the fork and knife tacos, but the eggs were watery which made that dish not as good. The service was excellent-our server was kind and attentive. We will definitely return! read more

A little delayed in writing, but rolled out to The Red Drum at Christmas time. Cold night made the fire place not just an aesthetic feature but also a welcomed source of warmth in the dining room. Service was highly professional and seamless between waitress, expediter, and bus staff. Shrimp appetizer presented well, cooked through but not tough, and flavor was balanced between the shrimp and the batter, without a need to consider using the sauce which would have dominated. Fried chicken tacos, woodfired chicken breast and short ribs ragu all excellent choices - truly a matter of personal preferences. Having previously worked in F&B, including bartending, I'm not a fan of the cusstom cocktails craze, but my wife and son both ordered one - and one was enough, probably would not order again, not bad, just not good enough to order again. One downside of the whole experience is that, as with many restaurants, especially smaller spaces, the more packed they get with people, the louder it gets as the sound rebounds off the walls.... there are simple, lower cost mitigation options to help reduce that effect.
