On a whim we decided to try dinner at The Lick over in West Ashley. This restaurant is located in the Windermere neighborhood and is directly across from EarthFare. It is a cozy busy spot and requires reservations. We were lucky because it was around four when we got there and were able to nab a seat at the counter. What a beautiful space, it's inviting and can be intimate. The decor reminds me of an elevated cozy English pub that one might find in the Cotswolds. The menu is beautiful and the dishes we had were just outstanding. Now, the service... I have to say all the staff, especially Abby, Dane & Taylor were so attentive but not intrusive.. staff checked on us so many times.. it's a rarity & much appreciated. This was such a weird experience because everything was fantastic right up until my steak arrived. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has a great atmosphere--definitely a great date-night spot. We ordered the bread, Wagyu bites, and deviled eggs with bacon jam and caviar, and every appetizer was delicious. The cocktails were excellent too. Unfortunately, things took a very strange turn when my American Wagyu steak came out. Almost immediately, I noticed an extremely unpleasant smell coming from it. I genuinely hate even describing it this way, but it smelled like dog poop. I initially thought maybe it was just me, but everyone else at the table smelled it too. Against my better judgment, I took a bite, and unfortunately it tasted exactly the way it smelled. Something was clearly very off with that particular piece of meat, so I pushed it aside and didn't eat any more. When our server came back, I explained what was going on--which may be the strangest complaint I've ever had to give a server. She took it back to the kitchen and told us that the chef and staff couldn't detect anything unusual. I'm not sure what happened with that steak, but both the smell and taste were unmistakable to me, and everyone at our table could smell it. I didn't make a big deal out of it. I shared some pasta with my wife and still ended up enjoying the evening. The strange thing is that everything else was so good that I would absolutely come back. Small restaurant in line with the Windemere Plaza shops. If you plan on dining here I would definitely reserve through Resy. Tables are limited and the bar seats 8! I arrived at 4:00 opening time to get a good idea of the menu and experience the environment. Has kind of a "neighborhood feel" but with an upscale twist. Interesting lighting throughout and tables are set nicely. I ordered the burger but it was delivered as a smash burger which is not what is stated on the menu so it was returned. The Lick management claim they use wagyu beef but the burger is actually a mix of different cuts of meats which is deceiving in my opinion-- I would suggest they offer a wagyu straightforward (patty) burger -- they would do well with it and could charge a nice sum! When asked if I'd like another entree I opted for the Caesar salad with a piece of grilled salmon. The fish was seared just right and very tender ~ nicely done ~ and just the way I prefer it so I was happy! There is a mix of attitudes but basically I left with feeling that I would not return... a pseudo steakhouse that doesn't really "cut it" compared to other local establishments.... oh well, c'est la vie. read more

Our neighbors highly recommended The Lick at 10 Windermere Boulevard, and we went there for dinner last night to celebrate my husband's birthday. It is close to James Island, in Charleston off Folly Road and across the street from Earthfare. This is an intimate space, cozy and comfortable. We were greeted warmly by staff and had wonderful service throughout our meal. There is a nice cocktail, been and wine menu. We did a lot of reading ahead of time and had ideas on what we'd order from the food menu. We started out with freshly baked Gigi's Bread with sea salt and honey butter. This is made in-house by the phenomenal pasty chef who also makes the desserts. We also had the Wagyu Bites with potato rosti - this was a taste of pure heaven! We also got the deviled eggs with jalapeño and bacon jam - hard to describe how wonderful these are! Our server gave us a pro tip - use the Gigi's bread to sop up the remaining bacon jam. We split an entrée of crispy chicken piccata with lemon, artichoke, capers, heirloom tomatoes on angel hair pasta and asparagus. It was a generous portion and truly the best chicken dish I've had in years. We got the famous "The Potato Thing" to go with the chicken and it's hard to describe the rich, savory, and layered goodness of this dish. After this incredible meal, we listened to the dessert descriptions and learned about the pastry chef making them in house. We were too full to take advantage of these delights and chose instead to come back again soon and leave more room for dessert. Great food, great service, great place! We had John Ryan as our server and he was attentive, helpful, and kind. The spot is small but great for a date night/dinner with friends. I was here on a double date and we ordered the deviled eggs amd Gigi's bread to start. So delicious! The deviled eggs were tasty and the bacon jam took it up a notch. The bread was phenomenal and reminded me of Texas roadhouse rolls with the honey butter (which are a banger). I ordered the braised short ribs which were succulent and tender, a little salty for me but that's my preference. My boyfriend got the steak frites which was cooked perfectly and the fries were delicious and crispy. Our friends got steak frites and the risotto which were both a hit with them. We also ordered the sides of mac and cheese and the brussels which honestly were not even needed because the entrees filled us up, so we took them home (we did take a bite first and they were good). When I heard about The Lick, I immediately called my friends to plan dinner. I love that they take reservations directly rather than through an outside reservation agent. We arrived and were immediately seated for our reservation. They have really done a nice job with the decor and seating. While waiting for our friend to arrive, we ordered drinks. I ordered prosecco and was disappointed to learn they were out. However, they brought me the last little bit to enjoy on the house while deciding on another drink. (I hope this is an anomaly, because it seems having prosecco on hand makes sense:)) We started with Gigi's bread----wow!! Some of the best bread I have had in awhile. I had the steak-frites which was perfectly cooked and I enjoyed every bite. We tried the "potato thing" and were very disappointed. We heard good things, but it was basically layers of potato with a layer of cheese on top. If the cheese had been layered throughout, it would have been out of this world. For dessert; we had the peanut butter pie and key lime pie. If you are debating, go with the peanut butter pie. It was the best I have had. 4/19/26 - 5/5 - Brunch at The Lick Was Pure Perfection - An Instant Favorite in West Ashley We returned to The Lick on Sunday, April 19 specifically for brunch, and it exceeded every expectation. After falling in love with their Baked Crab Cake on our first visit, I knew I had to try it as the Crab Cake Benedict -- and it was nothing short of incredible. The dish arrived with a generous, beautifully formed crab cake that is almost entirely sweet blue crab. It sat atop a perfectly toasted English muffin and was crowned with a flawlessly poached egg whose rich, runny yolk cascaded beautifully over everything. The combination of luxurious crab, bright hollandaise, and that luxurious egg was sublime. It came with a crispy, satisfying potato brick they playfully call "The Potato Thing" -- an ideal, savory accompaniment that rounded out the plate perfectly. I cannot wait for next Sunday's brunch! My wife ordered the French Toast, which was equally marvelous -- rich, flavorful, and boasting a delightful, almost custardy texture with beautifully caramelized edges. I may have "helped" her with a few bites, but the Crab Cake Benedict was so satisfying that I happily took the remainder home and enjoyed a luxurious mini breakfast the next morning. The atmosphere was lively and warm, exactly the sophisticated yet relaxed neighborhood vibe we love. We sat at the bar where we were wonderfully entertained by Taylor. Later, co-owner Alex (Chris's wife) stopped by for a gracious chat and kindly introduced us to Chef Chris. It was a genuine pleasure to tell them in person how much we loved the brunch. From the exceptional food and thoughtful details to the warm hospitality and engaging energy, The Lick delivered a flawless experience once again. We're already planning our next visit. OMG!!! Where do I start, as everything was amazing!! I arrived with no reservation and luckily they had a table available for me. The location is where the old Yo Burrito used to be. They've done a beautiful job with the decorations making it a very nice and intimate dining experience. Not too large, but just right. The tables are set up to accommodate two or pushed together to seat 4. I was so impressed with the size of the tables for a 2 topper, as most have such little space for your food. Loved this!! I was impressed. I was pleased to meet and chat with the owner about the inspirations for the menu, which has a good variety!! Everyone on the staff, including the chef checked up on me to get feedback on how I liked the food and to see if I needed anything!! Exceptional hospitality, which is so missed by so many restaurants, but not here at The Lick. I felt like my presence was appreciated and I loved it!! I started with the Windermere Smash, which reminded me a little of a Bourbon Sour with a mint twist. It was refreshingly good. I ordered 3 oysters, bcz you can't have oysters on the menu and not have a few!! Oysters were from Edisto and possessed just enough salt to go well with the accompaniments served with it. The cocktail sauce was one of the best I've EVER had. I couldn't leave without trying GiGi's bread (milk bread), especially since I'm giving up bread for Lent!!! OMG, this bread was mouth watering delicious, with a hint of sweet. Easter is gonna have to hurry up, bcz I've gotta go back for more bread. Next was the AMAZING A5 Waygu Bite!!! !!! This is THE BEST Waygu bite I've had!! The steak over a strip of potatoe melted in your mouth. I was so tempted to order another, but knew I was not going to finish my dinner, as it was, and didn't want to be glutton!! Secretly kicking myself for not getting another. It was THAT good. I decided to go with the Steak and Frites because I love a good Ribeye and was so tempted by the "beef tallow fries", and neither disappointed!! Those homemade fries were crispy and soft in all the right bites!! Needless to say I couldn't finish my food, so I had it packed up to take home. After seeing the dessert options, I also ordered, Key Lime Pie to go, which looks scrumptious!! The staff did a great job of packing up my food, to include condiments (aioli, béarnaise, and even the butter for my bread)!! Kudos to them, as often I arrive home with no condiments that went with the dishes I had boxed by the waitstaff which is frustrating when it's not your ordinary condiment. I stopped in on a Tuesday to this new steakhouse in West Ashley while in a business trip. It's unassuming from the outside in a strip mall location but once you step in, they have made use of every inch including kitchen in view, lively bar, and adjacent dining tables. For a Tuesday, it was pretty busy and most tables and the bar were filled. Weekends would definitely require reservations. The hostess originally offered a bar seat but then realized the guests nearby were 2 cocktails in, and offered a table if I preferred a quiet dining experience over making immediate friends which I appreciated. Interior decor was well done and had a cozy upscale feel with nods to Charleston culture. I had the steak and frites which did not disappoint. Chris, the owner, introduced himself and checked on me as did the manager. If I had "The Lick" in my town, I would definitely be a regular. The menu and the few photos we could find on socials got us in the door. Little did we know we were about to experience the neighborhood in restaurant form. We were taken to a 2 top table that was wider than most restaurant 2 tops, so much so that our table butted up against another 2 top but we never felt like we were crammed in. Close enough to strike up conversation with our neighbors yet far enough away to have quiet conversation amongst ourselves. A refreshing design element that didn't go unnoticed. The food is neighborhood good eats....a place where you can slip in and have a great steak or perfect piece of fish or chicken, some fun starters, and homey sides. We had: Deviled Eggs with Jalepeño Bacon Jam Kale Salad with Shaved Red Cabbage, roasted Squash, Carmelized Apple, Fennel, Feta, Sunflower Seed Crumble and Maple Fig Vinaigrette Le Bilboquet- Joyce Farms Chicken, Warm Spices, Beef Tallow Fries, and Greens Steak and Frittes- Ribeye with Sauce Au Poive, Beef Tallow Fries, and Garlic Aioli. We were so excited to try this neighborhood spot and it did NOT disappoint. From the food, to the environment and the staff - everything was top notch. The bread was a fluffy pillow with sweet and salty and tasted like heaven. The shrimp and grits were maybe the best I've had in a long time - there is magic in that gravy. It was grilled with gorgeous char and packed with flavor while still incredibly tender. Alongside it we had the Brussels Sprouts with parmesan and Dijon, which were crisp, savory, and a great match for the steak. I have to say I truly, very seriously, appreciate that the owner is there, greeting guests and working. It isn't often you see a restaurant owner cleaning tables/setting them, and I have to respect that. The food was good, a little saltier than my preference, but it's absolutely someone's preference so I'm not mad at it, the potato thing was great, highly recommend to get it with parm and caviar!
