September 2020, I went with two other people to give Red Ginger another try. Third visit since the new management took ownership of the restaurant. These were my impressions: - Red Ginger had a nice list of Authentic Chinese dishes before, not now. - The new waitstaff and lady at the front are not very friendly nor knowledgeable. I asked for something regarding the menu and none of them knew the answer. They had to go inside the kitchen to ask the chef and it took like 5 full minutes for this.... - The scallion pancakes had no scallion taste whatsover. Usually they come with a soy sauce dipping sauce, they are now giving you DUCK sauce for dipping sauce. - The Fish with Ginger and scallions does not come in a clay pot anymore, there's almost no ginger, 90% scallions. Taste was not as good as before either. - Pan fried noodles with roast pork was ok, but the pork was dry and bland. Not very good tasting. Very disappointed and that was probably my last visit. They had close to a year to keep the quality of the former food and kitchen and it is now focused on standard American Chinese fare, not Authentic. read more

We ordered take out and was vastly disappointed in both the quality and quantity of the Moo Goo Gai Pan and the General Chow Chicken. The chicken in the General consisted of tiny pieces of meat and was quite chewy. The sauce in the other order was tasteless and there were few pieces of chicken. I would go as far to say that if a had a gift certificate to go there, I wouldn't. The rice was disgusting and didn't smell right. Nime Chow was awful. The shrimp didn't look safe to eat. In search of the perfect spot for Chinese. It was middle of the road. We got chicken pad thai, boneless chicken fingers, crab rangoon and dumplings. The crab rangoon was very good. I won't order from anywhere with crappy ones. The dumplings however were really greasy, we ordered fried but now I'm wondering if we got steamed by mistake. 2 1/2 stars. Today for lunch we did take-out from Red Ginger in Johnston. They have been around for 20 or so years now. The last time I had Red Ginger was in or around 2009/2010 I knew exactly what to expect, and what I expected is exactly what I got. They do a good job with their General Tso and Pork Fried Rice. We also did a round of Steamed Dumplings. I can't measure places by their Dumplings as it wouldn't be fair. To put it short I like what I like, not top priority at Red Ginger. They are good, but not the best out there. They have served the Johnston area with pride for many years. Red Ginger is a nice place with a really great & friendly staff. Can't complain - food is always good. Came for lunch early Saturday with my sister. The only problem is it's located in a small strip on a busy street with other store fronts with limited parking so parking can be a hassle. We ordered the chicken corn soup, not too many places make this so we always get it when we come. Nice velvety texture full of corn and chicken bits..yum. For entrees, we had the Red Ginger Special Chow Mein and the Salty Squid/Shrimp combo. The Chow Mein is our usual here - done just right, crunchy veggies, nice combo of meats poured over a bed of crispy noodles that soften over time. The salty squid/shrimp wasn't what we were expecting, thought it was going to be a lighter not so floury batter but still tasty enough with a little kick. We were the only ones in there and my 2 yr old nephew was a bit angsty but they were very accommodating - service was great! Nothing calms down a 2 yr old like a free fortune cookie, lol. read more

I used to live near here and being vegan, I figured I'd try the General tofu here. Big mistake. This restaurant quite possibly makes the worse tofu I've ever had in my life and I've had a lot of tofu! The way tofu is prepared and cooked is very important as it can end up tasting really good or really awful. It tastes really awful here. Everything about it was awful. I took one bite and couldn't eat anymore and threw the rest away. It was a really weird soft texture almost as if they used silken tofu and fried it which is a big no no. Fried tofu should be made with firm or extra firm tofu for best results. If it weren't for the friendly staff, I would give the place a one star review. read more

One of the handful of Chinese restaurants in New England where I find enjoyment in the food from both the American-Chinese and Chinese choices on the menu. The food here can be oily depending on the dish, but unlike some other Chinese restaurants in RI, I don't come out of dinner feeling like I mummified myself in preservatives or smelling like fried food. Somehow I always forget about this restaurant bc it's all the way in Johnston (SO FAH!) but I will surely stop in more often than in the past bc the food on my latest visit was SO good. This may be the worst place I've ever had Chinese food from besides Fu Ming. Their crab rangoons are not sweet and creamy like most spots but tastes like cream cheese. Their sesame chicken and general tso is an orange color I have never seen places make it orange like this and the consistency of the chicken was a little rubbery. Their fried rice was the only decent thing I had. And the vegetables served with my meal seemed to be good quality but overall my first experience eating here and I wasn't a fan. The Red Ginger takeout has changed. The food was different like not having certain items missing in the meals. Just heard the Nephew took over last week. Everything has changed from the ribs very dry like raggy looking. Pork is cut different from before very dry. No water chestnuts in the Mongolian beef and baby corns. Hope it comes back. I have been going to Red Ginger for over 17 years now. I always recommended to friends. Have had many birthday dinners there. Have eaten here almost every other week. Now that it is under new ownership the food is terrible. We have given it a 2nd and 3rd chance but to no avail, the food remains the same....not so good. Things have been burnt or undercooked. Its truly a shame that Sally's reputation is being marred so extensively under the new owners. The owner would rather joke around with the one waitstaff person than make sure customers have what they need. We will never go back. Hope Sally can buy back Red Ginger. I need my old Red Ginger back. I think there are so many negative reviews than positive since the new owners have taken over. We go to Apsara now exclusively. read more

I wanted to like this place since it's close to home and my go to place is closed due to Covid-19. I was disappointed. The pork fried rice was flavorless. It tasted like rice with soy sauce and a few bits of pork. In a nutshell a salty heap not worth the caloric investment and ended up in the trash. It's also over priced considering with the rice came 3 wing pieces and 2 pieces of beef teriyaki. That was about $14. Entire order was 21$ because I also got an order of BBQ spare ribs. They were over cooked and tough as shoe leather. I also found it annoying the charged for duck sauce and hot oil. The hot oil was terrible but the duck sauce was pretty good but I don't think I should have to pay for condiments. Sorry but I have to give this place only 2 stars..... Jessica the waitress was very rude seemed like she was annoyed with us being there. We all ordered our food and it came out piece bye piece instead of all together so the kids were eating while we all just sat there then 2 of us got our food while others just sat there not ideal for having a family dinner. Then my husband gets all fat instead of boneless Sapir ribs was gross couldn't eat them he loved the chicken fried rice though. Low main noodles my 3 year old loved them. Stay far away from the general teso chicken was all batter no chicken at all I didn't eat it the white rice was so good and root beer was good. Decided to treat ourselves to a non-home cooked meal, Red Ginger use to be one of our go-tos but haven't ordered from them in a while. We didn't realize that it was under new ownership and had new chefs. The food was awful and overpriced either too salty, too bland just awful I actually think that the bad Chinese food at the mall is 5 stars compared to the mess that was delivered to us tonight. Been here a few times and got take out. On my recent trip I came with some co workers for lunch to see about getting a first hand experience on a Friday close to noon. The place looks very clean and organized. Definitely a step up from the typical chinese take out places. What attracted me to this place is the "authentic menu" written half in Chinese and English which offered Chow Fun and Jelly Fish and all sorts of not typical items associated with Chinese take out. Any who my favorite thing out of the whole place so far has been the West Lake Beef Soup. Very flavorful and filling and i probably could've just had that and been satisfied. I was a bit disappointed in the soup dumplings which had virtually no soup but at least the waitress admitted that it probably can't compare to the places in Chinatown NY. The scallion pancakes were more doughy then what I expected. They should have been more crispy and flatter but at least there was a decent amount for the price. My salted fish and chicken fried rice meal was quite good so it redeemed this otherwise lackluster meal. My co-workers lunch specials were the Sweet & Sour Chicken and my god these looked like oversized dough balls. Not your average lightly battered fried chicken. Our initial waiter seemed a bit new to the restaurant so he kindve got confused when I ordered off the other menu versus the regular one. Thankfully another waitress took over and she didn't have a problem correcting the order. Plus she spoke cantonese so that worked out well for me. For the price of the lunch specials they're pretty good and matches what you expect. I took the chance and went with the more expensive meal and got a so-so result. Still I would still come back to this place as they offered a $7.95 buffet which doesn't sound too bad. Plus West Lake Beef soup isn't offered everywhere. read more

Since I moved from NYC back in 2018 I haven't been able to find a consistently good Chinese-American restaurant and this is the only one that has come closest to It. I ordered fried chicken wings ( about 8 pieces ) with plain fried rice and steamed dumplings. The dumplings weren't the greatest but the wings. The wings were the winner for me. They start you off with the best wonton chips. I could eat a whole bowl myself. The PuPu platter was plenty for 2 and gave you a good tasting tour of the apps. The dishes were a nice size to share. The Garlic chicken was delicious with the vegetables julienned and diced small. I liked them but wish the veggies were larger. Overall service was good and the food was very fresh. The amount of food has been proportionately cut to to about two thirds but the price remains the same. Menu may look the same, but when food is brought out for the customer, it looks like a bait and switch. Owner kept telling me "this is how the chef is being creative." I'm super picky with Chinese food but my fiancé and I gave this place a go and I'm happy we did. We ordered delivery and it arrived really quick. The person taking orders was nice and wasn't rushing us off the phone. We got our food and the food for sure is a different taste from other locations I have mixed feelings about the food. They serve rice with eggs in it and I'm not really a fan. But the egg rolls were amazing , I ordered shrimp and broccoli, the sauce they used was clear not brown like I'm used to so I kind of liked it and kind of not , maybe my taste buds were off but I would try it again. My fiancé got boneless spare ribs and he as well said his food tasted different but he did enjoy it. I guess we just have to get used to it. read more

I was introduced to Red Ginger in my college days (circa 2003ish) by my Asian friends, who swore this was the best and most authentic Chinese around. They were right... then. I have gone back and introduced many to this Killingly Street treasure in the years since. In the last 5 or so years, I definitely noticed a slight decrease in quality; it just seemed more shortcuts were being taken. However, it was still good, and definitely one of the best I could find, so I continued to go there and recommend it. I went back last night for the first time in about a year (to introduce someone new), and was extremely disappointed. Not that the food was bad... it was edible and OK... but that was about it. Nothing made this stand out. My boyfriend and I wanted spicy so I ordered the General Tso's (used to be the best around) and he ordered a steak dish with a "Spicy Honey Sauce." Neither had a BIT of spicy, and both were supposed to be. The chicken from the GT's, although cooked to the proper temp, almost seemed to taste like it came out of a box. I thought it used to be served with whole Thai Chilies (which would have definitely been spicy), and they were nowhere to be seen. The spicy honey was too sweet and not spicy at all. The beef had an odd texture. The egg drop soup tasted heavily of MSG. After being an advocate for Red Ginger for about 10 years, I think this was my final straw. It has now joined the ranks of any "OK" Chinese restaurant around. Hopefully someone can come around to knock my socks off in the Chinese food arena again soon. read more
