Not sure why this place has such a great average review. We picked up an order of the Sweet & Sour chicken, General Sao chicken, Vegetable LoMein, and Hot/spicy chicken wings. The chicken used in the Sweet & Sour was very stringy. The General Sao was made with dark meat, not white, and was also fatty. Vegetable LoMein was just "OK". And the spicy chicken wings were also just "OK". We actually threw out all the leftovers and didn't even bother keeping them because we knew we would not eat any of it. We will never order from there again, it was a waste of money. read more

Do yourself a favor and flip all the way to the back of the menu with the options only written in Chinese. The Crock Pot dishes are delicious yet simply prepared. The flounder crock pot with ginger and scallions was so good! I would have loved some snow peas thrown in there maybe though. Next time I'm getting the Tofu and Vegetables which sounded amazing. My husband really enjoyed the Lamb and Mushroom crock pot, too. I'm always on the look out for some authentic Cantonese Chinese food in the area. I have been making my way up to Boston for the most part until some of my friends suggested that I try out "Red Ginger." Yes, they have 2 menus. One with the moogoo gai pan and the other with the west lake beef soup! Red Ginger is tucked away in Johnston which is really only about 10 minutes outside of Providence (most of you travel at least 10 min to get to another place within Providence!). Situated in a strip mall of sorts, you can easily miss it as you come off the freeway. When you walk inside, you'll see that there is plenty of places to sit and can hold large parties of people. Both menus are actually located in one booklet so flip to the back if you want the authentic stuff. Many people go here for their lunch. It's $7 if you can find something you like! Otherwise, you can order from the back menu at any time of the day. That have great cha siu, roast duck and west lake beef soup. Their salt and pepper pork is not the best but it isn't that bad either. They have an array of other foods that I wanted to try but between two people, I couldn't justify eating $60 worth of foods! They take credit cards but not american express. They also speak both Mandarin and Cantonese and can deliver within a mile of their restaurant. Come by and try! RED GINGER of Atwood av Johnston was a long time favorites when it came to my choice for Chinese food. Sadly, something has gone wrong. After a second "take-out"since since March, I have to report this restaurant has gone down the drain. The food was bland mush. It was made worse by mixing up the order; causing Linda to drive back to Johnston for a "shit apology" ( life imitates Larry David) Linda then exchanged one order of mush for another order of mush. read more

Went there for dinner. Over 45 minutes for the food to come out. When one of the orders came out the waitress said, "your food will be right out". 25 minutes received the bill and was told the cook made a mistake and your food is almost done. I don't know what is up with this place lately. I used to eat here all the time and never had an issue, but my last few orders have been extremely disappointing. Tonight I wasn't feeling well so I ordered some hot & sour soup and general tso's chicken for takeout. I was hoping for some spicy dishes to clear out my sinuses.... neither was spicy at all like they have been in the past. The soup was just not good at all; not "hot," no flavor and no fresh ingredients whatsoever. The chicken was all globbed together with general tso's gunk to the point where I couldn't even pull the pieces apart. The broccoli that is came with was too tough to chew, and the rice was dry and molded to the container. This is the closest Chinese place to my house... but I'm definitely switching to someplace else as my default. read more

While visiting a friend in RI, we stopped her for some grub. Apparently they're under new ownership and after reading previous reviews (while waiting for the food) I was a bit cautious. I have to say though, it was quite tasty. The sauces are extremely delicious and don't have a lot of starch like other places like to add for thickness. She had the sweet and sour chicken dinner combo and I had the chicken lo mein dinner combo, both came with options for white or fried rice and an egg roll or crab rangoons. The portions were massive (enough for leftover lunch) and the prices were reasonable. Staff were hospitable and seated us quickly -- everyone enjoyed their meals. Despite other townies rave reviews of this place, I wasn't all that impressed. I didn't think the place was gross or sucked, but I've just experienced better before. The prices were a bit on the steep side, and the food was just OK. This place does get busy and parking can be an issue at times, as it is in a plaza. They used to have two separate menus: one with authentic Chinese cuisine and a second with Americanized fried junk that the rubes think is Chinese. I've always ordered from the first, and my Asian friends heartily recommend it as well. Recently, they've expanded to a second unit in their plaza, taking over a former karate dojo, and they combined their food offerings to a single menu. As good as you are going to get in RI for authentic Chinese. They have two menus; the one most people get when they go into a Chinese restaurant and the one they give the Chinese when they go into a Chinese restaurant, aka the 'Pink Menu'. We're talking garlic seasoned eggplant and pork in a ceramic crock with white rice, Ma Po Tofu, satay beef chow fun...all off the Pink Menu. The egg rolls are crispy fried to order, steamed dumplings are flavorful and handmade, wanton soup is filled with lots of stock, wontons, sliced pork, cabbage and bok choy. the hot and sour soup is one of my favorite on either coast Perfect place for the purist and the old standby dishes everyone knows about. Looks are deceiving as it is in a plaza on Killingly St but when you walk in the place, it is a world apart from the noise and traffic just outdoors. 5 stars! read more

Every single dish was absolutely delicious, and better than I had ever had in any other asian Restaurant. Went here a few days ago, and I must say, the food is fantastic. They give out very generous portions, the again, the food was splendid. I very much enjoyed the General Tao's Chicken, and the barbecue spare ribs. Very good experience overall, and not the mention, the bartender makes a mean Zombie. Excellent authentic Chinese food. The menu is just like any other Chinese restaurant, it has all the basics chow mein, general tsaos chicken, egg rolls, combo plates etc... But there is also an authentic Chinese menu! This is usually where I order my food. I order anything from fish to stir fried beef and mix chinese vegs (I love Chinese broccoli). The restaurant inside is very cozy and cute, very clean and the staff is always very friendly. Sometimes there is a little bit of a language barrier, and it can be hard to understand certain servers, but there is always someone else around to help. My husband has a severe legume allergy. So he can't have string beans, pea pods, nuts, tofu etc.. And we have never had a problem. Their take out comes out in a timely fashion and they also deliver. Although I've never had food delivered because we are about 3 mins away. I have seen take out food come out of the kitchen though and usually deliveries are put in a portable hot bag so I am sure the food stays as hot as possible. read more

Went here for a birthday dinner and couldn't ask for a better night. Service was excellent and the food was good and tasty and not to salty as some can be. Full drink menu and can pretty much make anything you can want or think of. Tables have the spinning service wheel which makes getting to a dish fun and easy. Also can use chopsticks if you want to give that a whirl. They have two menus one of the American version and one of the authentic style. Which is a nice opinion to have I feel and offers more. One of the worse Chinese meals we've had!!! Any good reviews here baffle me. The food is as average and bland. Most of the dishes were served room temp or barely warm (even the tea!). Oddly, two of the warm dishes were served on refrigerated cold plates? The nime chow tasted old, the coconut shrimp soggy, etc. The service was slow and the server had no expression or personality and you could barely hear her speak. The decor was as bland as the food. It was near empty on a night when it should have been busy -- a sign we should have left upon entering. And the older woman, I assume the owner, had no clue about any of this. I can't believe I just wasted nearly $100 on such a crappy meal/experience!!! If you appreciate good chinese food, don't come here -- there are plenty of terrific chinese restaurants in RI who know what they're doing! read more
