Every afternoon, the city shuts down for a few hours. But other stuff is trickier to decipher. When do people in Sevilla eat, for instance? That might be the biggest mystery of all. Some days at noon, this lovely little pita joint on the Plaza Calderón de la Barca is totally empty. Other days, it's a madhouse, and it seems like the whole neighborhood is sitting out front in the sunshine drinking cañas of beer. When you don't know the local schedule, you get paranoid, and you start to imagine that everything is following a schedule that you're not privy to. Like last night. I saw several unrelated groups of little kids on rollerblades, and I wondered if it was "Rollerblade Friday." A few days before that when I kept seeing people wearing the same kind of knitted scarf, I convinced myself that it was "Knit Scarf Tuesday." That's how it is when you're a stranger.
