Red Pine Cookhouse is getting all the buzz north of MN 210, and for good reason! The proprietors are serving up authentic modern Vietnamese and Thai dishes, alongside standard up north favorites like burgers and fish and chips. Two of us had the Pad Thai, one had steak and potatoes, and the other Szechuan tofu. The Pad Thai stands up to any version I've had anywhere, a strong and solid offering with the tanginess of tamarind balanced with fresh chopped cilantro. The traditional beef and potatoes dish can be hit and miss, but this one balanced potatoes with crispy edges and pillowy starchiness with quality strips of steak, all stir fried together in just enough brown sauce to bring it together. The tofu and snap peas in a spicy Szechuan sauce were flavorful and hearty enough after appetizers. We didn't get pictures of the egg rolls, which are as good as you'll find in these parts and the spring rolls, which were slightly less authentic than we'd hoped. We finished off with lemon bar ice cream, Vietnamese flan, and a toffee Bundt cake. Red Pine Cookhouse is a visually impressive log building with plenty of natural light flowing in through the many windows and a curved staircase leading up to a game room for the kids. Starting with the Good News, the Cream Cheese WonTons and Chicken Tenders very good. The bad news, we've patroned since the opening of the restaurant and reduced the rating of most of the entrees from a "9" to now a "4.5 to 5". The Pineapple, Pea Pods, Steak, Chicken, Sauce, Ingredients and Size of entree have all been removed and/or reduced. No need for take home containers any longer. You should get a plate full of food as we were served in the past. Service is still Great, ambiance Great, drinks Good. It's too bad this is no longer a first thought for a Great Dinner. read more

The Lake's area best Asian food hands down! Our first visit was perfect. Service was outstanding, attentive, friendly and prompt. Three dining areas and each was setup such that table conversation was easy and clear. The two story, clean, appropriately lit spaces in this log building invite you to relax and enjoy yourself. Drink & food orders easy and menu explanations were concise and descriptive. Entrees of sesame chicken and sweet & sour chicken, with egg rolls, wontons and the out of this world bacon fried rice. While we were skeptical about the rice our server assured us it was delicious and she was absolutely correct! Portions were generous, egg rolls were the best we've had anywhere in America. The batter was light, crunchy and nary a trace of oil, cooked to perfection. Wontons were killer and all the sauces were spot on and truly complimented each dish. We had leftovers and added a takeout order (generous) of the bacon fried rice. And all the food was as good the next day. Our dessert was a vanilla flan that honestly was the first time either of us had one. And we were floored at how good it was and laughed as we took a photo of the empty plate, but included the first picture I forgot I had taken. Delicious, light and smooth, it's another new favorite. The Chef and staff have created a menu that's rare in our area in a friendly atmosphere, in a warm, inviting rustic setting. I don't leave 5 star reviews very often unless they are deserved. This place was legit! We started with egg rolls and wontons, both were delicious. Our table split lo mein and sesame chicken. Both were fresh and also delicious. The chicken was fresh, crisp and homemade versus typical frozen nuggets you find and so many places. We arrived just before the kitchen closed and staff was still polite and helpful. Even made an extra order of wontons after my son devoured most of them, very impressed. This place is a gem. In a lodge style space with two levels (the upper has a bunch of video games), you get a half traditional semi-supper club menu and half Vietnamese classics. We stuck with that part of the menu but the other food looked great too. We split Chicken Spring Roles. These were traditional with fresh greens and quite a bit of chicken. The two large roles came with a nice peanut dipping sauce that I could eat by the spoon. My wife had the Bun Salad. This was a traditional noodle salad with cucumber, daikon, pickled carrots. You have choices, she had the Egg Rolls on top. They stayed nice and crisp in the form of a salad. I had the Spicy Steak and Potatoes. I had the free add on of veggies (carrots, broccoli, pea pods and onions). The whole thing was great. I ordered it medium spicy and that was perfect. Be careful medium is probably pretty spicy for most people. The whole meal was great and inexpensive. Excellent service on top of all of that made this a fun evening and a place that we will go to often. read more

Okay. Let's start with the positives. I am happy to see a small town in MN with an asian restaurant, a little food diversity is always nice and I am happy the locals like it. The service was fantastic and everyone was nice. the aesthetics of the building are beautiful. Now, as for the negatives. My girlfriend and I ordered: Sweet and sour chicken (2/10) $17 I could not fathom ordering the S.S. chicken again. I am having belly cramps and horrible indigestion and i believe this to be the root cause. The taste just wasn't there for me either. The sweet and sour sauce is a little "Orange-ish" and the vinegar does not come through at all. Cream cheese wontons (3/10) $9 Not much cream cheese, a whole lot of wonton wrapper. portions here are not the best as you'll come to find if you order the... Szechuan Tofu (2/10) $16 This was my girlfriend's main course.If you love whole snow peas, you're in luck. If you like tofu, 7 small pieces are what you get. The flavors were fine, definitely not amazing. but edible. Her opinion "hard rice. not the best taste. the beans were inedible" Spring rolls (7/10) 10$ These were quite possibly the best part of our meal. Packed with flavor and the peanut dipping sauce was fantastic. I would eat these again for sure. Tofu Fries (7/10) 8$ My girlfriend primarily ate these, but by the looks of it. she should've used the tofu from this appetizer on her main course. She really enjoyed the taste of the sauce. All in all. I cannot give this place more than a 1 star review. it's truly unfortunate because i would love to come back, but my full blown stomach cramps are advising me not to. read more

The experience at Red Pine Cookhouse is top notch! We were lucky enough to dine in on a night the establishment was hosting a ukulele jam session/ intro lesson. The session was well led by a warm instructor that made learning the ukulele fun and accessible - there were a handful of ukuleles and other instruments available for loan. Now, for the dining experience. The space is absolutely gorgeous - natural light, stunning stone fireplace, posh cabin decor at it's finest. There is a cozy loft with arcade games, foosball table and multitude of board games. Perfect place to host a birthday party. Food was absolutely amazing. The deep fried spring rolls were hot and fresh. Both the steak and chicken banh mi were winners. I particularly loved the steak banh mi - the meat was incredibly tender and marinated perfectly. Loved the crunch and freshness of the cilantro, pickled carrots, daikon radish and jalapeños. The flan was creamy, sweet and eggy - delish!!! Service was warm and welcoming. Had a delicious evening at the Red Pine tonight. Six of us got there fairly early on a Saturday night. We had appetizers and drinks, and then dinner. The appetizers were excellent and the dinner was truly delicious. The service was spot on and very attentive. The owner stopped by to check on us as well. I have never done this before but our experience deserves to be shared My Sisters and I were having a Sister's weekend and we went into the Red Pine Cookhouse for dinner. The staff was wonderful. We ordered a drink that the bartender was not familiar with so the staff member came back to the table, asked what was in the drink and we told her. She went back to the bar and she fixed the drink herself. Then we asked how the about the sweet and sour sauce. Her response was, "that is a question best answered visually." She went into the kitchen and grabbed a sample of the sauce. It was delicious. The level of customer service, and the excellent food, made for a wonderful night. Adding a new review sadly. Just tried again after not having since this summer (I'm visiting from Texas) and the chicken low mein was SO disappointing. Nothing at all like I had this summer. The sauce on the noodles this summer was thick and flavorful, today was watery and bland. The noodles today were just spaghetti noodles which didn't hold onto the watery sauce at all. The noodles this summer were thicker and so much better. The sesame chicken had very overpowering, unbalanced flavoring to it. Overall super disappointing. Consistency is key and they totally missed the mark with that. read more

We stopped at the Red Pine Cookhouse on our way back to Duluth from the Brainerd Lakes area. The building itself is absolutely striking, like a log cabin lodge with an upgraded modern feel. The food is a truly unique blend of "Americana" comfort classics and Asian cuisine, and it was delicious. Definitely not the predictable fare of every other bar and grill you pass along the way. Emily, MN has a secret gem in this place! The staff were friendly and helpful, the owners were greeting people at the door whether they were local regulars or people like us who wandered in for the first time. We had spring rolls, egg rolls, lo mein, and bacon fried. Everything was so SO good! The Egg rolls reminded me of Que Viet and was one of the best I've had! Sometimes at a Vietnamese restaurant I order it spicy and it isn't that spicy. Red Pine can make it spicy. If you want spicy order it extra spicy and they can make it spicy from their homegrown pepper plant. The Lo Mein was the best food we at but I mean bacon fried rice:) so so good as well. Showed up 30 minutes after opening on a Sunday and the place was PACKED. Immediately was greeted by two staff members and told it was open seating. Sat on the patio and had a few cocktails while waiting for spring rolls. Never had spring rolls but they were delicious. Shared spicy chicken lo mein and chicken fried rice; both dishes exceeded expectations. We have vacationed in the area for several years, and mostly the local dining scene is fried foods, burgers, and brats (not necessarily a bad thing). Since we have been trying to eat more healthily, we decided to give this place a chance, and we were most impressed by the service, ambience, and especially the food. Although the menu is limited to 3 apps and 5 or 6 mains, we all found something to our liking. Our group had spring rolls, sesame chicken, fried rice, and Vietnamese flan for dessert. Allwere excellent, and came quickly. So if you're ever in the area, and are Jonesing for some good, healthy grub, I suggest you give this place a try. Unfortunately I don't think they are open every night so maybe call ahead to be sure. read more

This restaurant is wonderful! It's a beautiful open space that has areas with lots of seating both bar and dining . Our waitress was fantastic! Super personable and had the perfect attentiveness. The food was good and came quickly. One person in my party just didn't care for the meal. He said it was fine just not his cup of tea and the owner came out and chatted with us and insisted he make something else. They took his meal off the bill and didn't charge for the new meal. We have been here a few times now and I would highly recommend. You don't find a lot of places that hit the mark completely. We will definitely go back. read more

Even though we didn't order them, they also brought out cream cheese wontons which stopped us in our tracks - the sweet and sour dipping sauce was spot on. We stopped in again for a full dinner a few days later. Place was busy but they had plenty of staff.
