I had a very disappointing experience with Gulf Coast Humane Society during my cat's neuter…read more I was already extremely nervous due to the surgery. During check-in, the veterinary technician was very kind and explained that he has a brachycephalic airway due to his facial structure. I asked if someone could call me once he was awake and doing well after surgery. She told me it would be better if I called around noon since that's when the cats are usually finished. When I called around noon, I was told his surgery hadn't even started because an emergency surgery came in and the dogs were being done before the cats. I completely understand that emergencies happen and should take priority. However, when I called again around 1:30 PM, his surgery still had not been performed. At that point, the staff member I spoke with was dismissive and rude. I was essentially told they have a high volume of spays and neuters and couldn't check on every cat. As a worried pet owner whose cat was under anesthesia for a scheduled procedure, I wasn't asking for constant updates--I simply wanted to know how he was doing. The most upsetting part happened after I picked him up. When I got him home, I discovered his entire backside was covered in blood. I immediately called the clinic and, after waiting on hold for about 10 minutes, was instructed to bring him back. Once we returned, I was told that the incision had not been fully closed. This should have been identified before he was discharged. A proper post-operative assessment should have caught this issue before sending him home. Seeing my cat covered in blood after surgery was incredibly distressing and completely avoidable. Unfortunately, this wasn't my first concerning experience at this facility. During a previous neuter visit with my other male cat, he could barely walk when he got home. While I appreciate that they now reverse the anesthesia, the overall experience still left me feeling that quality control and discharge assessments are lacking. I understand that shelters and high-volume clinics are busy, and I appreciate the veterinary technician who was compassionate during check-in. However, being busy should never come at the expense of patient safety or thorough post-operative care. I hope this review encourages the clinic to improve communication with pet owners and strengthen its discharge procedures so that no one else has to experience bringing their pet home in this condition.

They gave him injections and sent us home with medicine. Just an hour later he had gone completely paralyzed in his hind legs. We called and they said this was normal and he would heal over 3-6 weeks. This continued for days and we called repeatedly, saying that he was using the bathroom on himself. Well after calling multiple other vets for a second opinion, EVERY SINGLE VET said to bring him in immediately. So we took him to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital, sadly that was the last time we saw our baby Antoni. PARALYSIS WAS NOT NORMAL. He would never be able to walk again. Additionally the two injections they gave him destroyed his bladder and he would be sick for the rest of his life. HAD THIS VET BEEN HONEST WE COULD Have SAVED OUR BABY! HE WAS ONLY FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!!!! Blue Pearl also stated had Shoppes of Estero Animal Hospital just been honest with us from the moment he was paralyzed we could've saved him. ADDITIONALLY, they stated the two injections they gave him should NEVER be given together, which was the catalyst of the situation. Even if he lost his legs, he would've been sick for the rest of his life due to the damages the injections caused. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THIS VET! I walked in and the desk lady didn't even look in my direction so I sat down. When I started to look around I noticed how dirty everything was, dog pee on the floor, two cats being kept in a tiny cage. It got even worse when I entered the actual examination room. This woman was very rude and kept going on about how my dog probably had fleas because everywhere now is flee infested... About five flees had jumped on me when I went in that building. I didn't even want to put my dog down. Then she brought up how my dog needs shots which I already knew and was prepared to get going there, but after seeing everything I told her I would like to wait. She said "well youre not gonna find a better price anywhere else." Which all I could say to that was I can tell.

Dr. Fry spent time thoroughly answering questions and reassuring me with regard to my concerns. I received a call the following day to check and make sure my poodle was doing well. Just now age five (we got him at 12 weeks) he doesn't walk, he prances with head high. He is always "glued" to one or the other of us. Not easily trainable, however, about barking and potty. Otherwise, "smart as a whip!" Potty is very unpredictable. He is very protective of us and barks when anyone comes to the door or into the house, and then once he has accepted them "into the family." he does't want them to leave so he barks when they do! No matter what, he is the love of our now into-our-80s lives.

We intended to get him trained but the pandemic put an end to that. During the pandemic we moved twice, and Willie adjusted. He is loving, intelligent, and healthy.
