Newmarket location. I am currently bedridden with horrible stomach cramps and diarrhea while writing this review. This happened after eating here earlier today. Apart from the sickness the food is atrocious and nothing like the restaurants on Major MacKenzie Drive. I have gone to this restaurant several times since it opened and it is always atrocious, but I keep going back in the hopes that one day I might get food that resembles the Major Mac locations. I probably should've listened to my co-workers and got the chicken. I had the Portuguese ribs and let me tell you, you gotta work for the meat! The flavor and sauce were amazing, but the meat was not fall off the bone material. Hidden in my "10-12" sized portion ribs were 3 that were just not ribs at all... 1 was a giant chunk of fat on a bone and 2 were giant chunks of cartilage just covered in sauce disguised as ribs. Also, there's this one fruity orangey drink that was recommended to me, I do not recommend it to you. It tasted like bubbly aspartame with a dash of artificial orange flavor. Red Rooster is my favourite place to grab some take out Portuguese food. I've grabbed single meals, family dinner packs and large catering trays from this location and have never been disappointed with my taste buds. Great chicken, great rice and great potatoes Why only 3 stars if I enjoy the food you ask? The place seems disorganized. The waits times are horrible. I have always pre ordered and have waited up to 30 minutes AFTER the set time. I'm also not exactly impressed with paying an extra $5 for a tiny container of spicy sauce, which is a staple in the meal and should certainly be included. Every time I order from here I leave frustrated with the wait, but end up forgetting about it once I dig into my food. I have FELLOW co-workers that bring in take-out from this place from time to time so I thought it's about time to see what they see that I don't as it is just next door to a Pho spot I frequented many years ago. Walking in and it was noticeable that the decor is Portuguese themed and there was a few seats so it's not PURELY take-out. We perused the menu and the most affordable for this lunch time is the 1/2 Chicken w/2 Side options($10.49). I choose the Garden Salad and Rice over the Parissiene Potatoes or French Fries simply trying to have a lighter meal but the whole dish came in a sizeable portion. The Chicken had a LIGHT seasoning on top but was grilled to perfection however didn't have the flavours even when dipping into the additional Spicy Sauce which didn't have the kick I was hoping for. The Rice was straightforward and didn't have the Saffron flavour I had elsewhere. The Parissiene Potato was pretty SOFT without being mushy because it was pan fried before service, so I don't mind it A-OK. Unfortunately they didn't have a 1/4 Chicken Combo instead for a LUNCH portion however they offer if you don't want the sides, simply get a Whole Grilled Chicken($11.49) for take-out. My friend had the Chicken Breast which seemed to be flattened so it wasn't as juicy as our 1/2 Chicken. 2.5 *Stars* as I would come back for the Grilled Chicken. There are loads of Custard Tarts($1.25) on the back counter which I would like to try next time. Holy batman portion sizes! Their 'plate' is what I would call a 'platter'. That said, I drooled at the in house meals while waiting for my takeout. We ordered a couple of chickens, peri peri sauce (which will cost you), Portuguese custard tarts, and an assortment of small fried patties I think featuring shrimp. So the chicken is what sold us. The custard tarts albeit freshly baked, were a bit salty for our liking ( I still downed them). The fried patties - tasted like the oil in which they had been fried had not been changed. My boss treated us to lunch today. My choice so I picked Portuguese Chicken. Our usual place is closed Mondays so we decided to give Red Rooster a try. Spent over $160 and when we asked for paper plates they charged us $5! Seriously its take out and you charge $5 for cheap styrofoam plates....very disappointing Chicken was mediocre, sides were good. I am very conflicted with this place. I hate the service, staff attitude and the long wait times. Even when you call your order in ahead of time, they tell you 15 minutes, I arrive 20 minutes later and still wait 20 minutes or more. And they don't even apologies, they just say we are very busy. But I go back. The food is good not amazing. If you get the chicken grilled it has a nice flavour. But ultimately I go back because of the hot sauce. The hot sauce is amazing but the BS part, it is the most expensive sauce ever and its not even homemade. A small container is $5, that is nuts! read more

Will probably return to eat here again. The wait times are average, we went around 7pm on a week night and it wasn't packed at all. They have draft beer (Rooster Lager or something), and we tried it, it was alright. It's the only draft they have but the main thing is regarding their food.. The price is a bit on the high side for this quality but overall, we were satisfied. The potatoes and rice were cooked well. We tried the chicken and the pork slices. This place is probably one of my favourite go to place for take-out. Rotisserie is the best. The chicken is nice and moist and very flavourful. I always order large hot sauce. The sauce is delicious. I probably drain my chicken with their hot sauce. It's not really spicy or hot, but it gives the chicken the best flavour. They give plenty of potatoes if you order. And for dessert, I always get a to-go Portuguese tart. Yum! I have tried the grilled chicken, but it tends to get dry. As said above, I normally get the rotisserie. I always loved coming here for their chicken breast and sauce but my last two visits really rubbed me the wrong way!! The young girl working the front is so unprofessional and rude, who knows how many customers they have lost because of her. On both occasions, my boyfriend and I visited the establishment at 8:20 pm. They close at 9 pm. I work in sales in respect other people's time so I certainly would not stay past 9. Not the mention the fact that there were others dining in as well. When we ordered the first time, she asked if it was for takeout. When we responded "no," she said "well we close at 9." We had 40 minutes to spare! I don't think it takes that long to eat. The second visit went very much the same. We walked in at around 8:15-20 and she stared us down as we looked over the menu. It was very uncomfortable. I made eye contact with her and she asked if we were ordering takeout. I said no and she rolled her eyes. I was so frustrated that this happened once again that we actually did not eat there and left immediately. My overall take, go visit Costa Verde at Major Mac and Weston. Love to grab some of this food and take it home. Easy to do, and it's delicious. Not only is the chicken flavourful, but their cornbread is delicious. We ordered take out there last Friday night, we ordered one chicken meal and one ribs meal. When we got home, they only gave us the ribs meal. In the chicken meal, there was only rice and potatoes, the chicken was MISSING!! We called to see what they would do about it, they said that we would have to go back right away for them to do anything. It was getting late and we were hungry, so we didn't bother taking it back. If you want to pay full price for two meals and get ripped off because they refuse you to reimburse you even though they conveniently 'forgot' to give you the chicken, then this is the place to go! read more

The food is fantastic. Chicken is crispy-skinned, tender and flavourful, rice is tasty and all the sides are fresh. Level of customer service has some room for improvement though. Wait times are slightly concerning, a poorly-worded sign at the front makes it clear there is "no priority given to small orders" when ordering ahead of time, and paying for sauce? Dispute getting a few mix reviews decided to try this spot and give them the benefit of the doubt. They missed up the order (despite me asking then to check it when I picked it up, which the girl casually did) and we didn't have enough food at a birthday party. I called them right away to see if we could fix the issue, but they don't answer their phone during dinner hours. Was finally able to reach them hours after dinner was over, and wasn't even given an apology, just a dismissive "come and pick up the missing stuff" I explained to them that dinner was over and I tried to contact them during it and furthermore that I live downtown so couldn't just drive up and was told "that's all I can do." The experience has left a bad taste and I do not recommend this place at all. I would give them 0 stars if I could because of the rude staff, casual attitude like they were doing me a favor and not their job and dissmisive attitude when trying to rectify the issue that was totally at their end. read more

"Dry chicken and under cooked hard potatoes" went to their Bathurst location... ordered two family size combo's... after waiting 40 minutes because they ran out of potatoes (which they did not tell me when ordering) i was given my order. when i got home 10 minutes later.. i discovered that the potatoes were still not fully cooked through, the chicken was dry and cold and the rice was also cold. Frustrated, i called the restaurant and was told that there was nothing they can do. Told me that it happens sometime and that i should wrap the potatoes in foil and put in oven for 20 minutes. like wtf.. if i wanted to cook myself.. i would not have went to your place. Major Mac/Bathurst location: I ordered the Family Meal with an extra rotisserie style whole chicken, natas, and the cod sticks. (I was in Portugal last year so I've tried the real deal of everything I ordered today.) The cod sticks were simply awesome, even better than some I've had in Lisboa and Porto. Thankfully, the medium sauce was quite delicious! Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. The chicken was barely warm and while my kids said the thighs and drums were ok, the breast pieces I had were hard and bland. Had it not been for the sauce I had to pay for, one would mistake eating cardboard.(Yes, it was THAT dry and hard.) The rice was also flavourless and on the hard side so I wished I had bought the XL size sauce! The potatoes were a good texture and actually hot and fresh, even though they could have used some salt. We haven't tried the natas but when I took them out of the container the pastry part was soggy so in the oven they go so I don't believe they were fresh either. In summary, food was under inspired and probably over cooked or more than likely, they gave me left overs from their lunch hour (thinking I would attribute the condition to take out and travel time)...the few patrons eating there seem to have had fresher chicken. Would I go back? Unlikely; I could spend the $60 or less elsewhere and get good fresh food. Recommendation- Lisboa Bakery on Twain in Mississuga (left overs taste even better than what we had today that was supposedly fresh.) read more

Delicious Portuguese chicken and to-die-for special sauce are incredible. Prices are a bit high but in reality you get what you pay for and every meal is worth every single cent you pay for it. The only occasional complaint is the wait time when placing a take-out order over the phone (Came in 20-30 minutes after ordering and had to wait another 20-30 minutes to receive the food but oh-so-worth the wait!). read more
