If this review was only for the workers that came out and did the work I would give them 5/5 (David M, Leo, Joseph). They were all good. However, the review is for the red shovel business corporation and I think they are about a 3/5. I filled out a request online and received a call that day from a Secretary. She scheduled an estimate date and took down a credit card number and said the work would begin that day if we agreed on the price. A three man team arrived promptly on the day of the work and I was given an estimate of $1900 for yard cleanup and some pruning. We were able to lower the price to about $1000 after some negotiation. David estimated about three hours of work. The work we agreed upon was completed in two hours. The company does well in having a good business model of a secretary standing by that calls you for an appointment, a heads up by the team when they're on their way, cashless payment, and professional team. However, it's a very expensive service and that's the main reason I wouldn't give them five out of five. My yard work came out to $500/hr. I think their pricing is about 20 to 30% above what I could get from a smaller business. At the end of the work, I was given a note card explaining that if I put a 5/5 review on Google that the team would get a $20 tip. I did not feel good about this because in my opinion if the work is fairly priced and well done, there is no need to guilt a customer into a good review just so the workers can get a small tip. I would give a good review when one is deserved and would gladly tip the workers if they went above and beyond the call of duty. The company should pay its workers a fair wage, give affordable pricing estimates to its customers and await all of the good reviews that will come with that model. Their current model doesn't seem fair to its workers or the customers. read more

We have used Red Shovel nine or ten times. Our last meeting with these technicians was Friday January 30. Anthony, Hunter and Martinez did a wonderfull job on our landscape project. They were on time, very polite and completed the job in a few hours. People that complain about this company are obvious complainers. read more

The worst lawn maintenance service we've ever used. Classic "mow, blow and go". Our main home is in another state and every time we've come to ABQ the lawn looks worse. Weeds have overtaken lawn area and are in rock areas. They damaged the drip irrigation systems in several planter areas in response to a very unhappy phone call and did nothing to repair them. We've had notices from our HOA and neighbors have commented how our home looks deserted. Use anyone but this company if you want your landscaping to be well maintained. read more

Lorenzo did a great job today, adding additional sprinklers to my current system. He had to pull up a plank from the deck in order to reach the area I wanted covered. He made sure I saw exactly where the line was laid and put the deck back perfectly. Yesterday, Craig planted a new shrub for me and moved two other roses for me. He went above and beyond in clearing the whole area and leaving it looking great. Both Craig and Lorenzo were on time, professional, and cleaned up everything before they left. This was an incredibly poor experience and even 3 months later I am still upset. I thought, given your reputation, that the service would be excellent, but I was woefully disappointed. To me this was a LOT of money and a vision of my yard you entirely failed to deliver. Poor Planning - * The only plan I received was a list of supplies/cost and a hastily drawn google maps with added vague details. The Friday before I had been told work would begin I had to call you directly to see if anyone was even coming! * Absolutely no project management, I had to go out several times every day and ask what they were doing, why they were not following what I had discussed with Chris Dibble (who literally disappeared and ghosted my emails). They had to ask me for directions on what was to be done, did not dig up any of the dirt to lower or level the ground for the ground cover rocks or remove invasive plants (some even cut holes in the ground fabric to let the weeds through!) Shoddy work that I still had to pay for - They installed plants that require watering - even though I was very clear that I did not want to water and do not have a functioning sprinkler system - and THEIR OWN SPRINKLER EXPERT came out after I complained and said that the sprinklers did not work (yep, told you all that) and that they had been hooked into by RS improperly and there was no way they would ever work! Again, no rebate on the cost. Dumped rocks and debris in the street and just left it there for the neighbors to avoid for the whole week, the rain to wash down the street and I risked fines from the city - I called and they brought a few hazard barriers so that was one small positive. There was no attention to specific things I requested - in fact they literally covered up a downspout with rocks even after I pointed out that they were to lower the dirt around it to let the water flow. They left a mess in the street, no clean up of the gravel in the driveway, the road or on the walkways and covered up the rock borders I had because of their failure to removed enough ground to place the ground cover rock correctly. Inaccurate charges - In the end I paid the amount due because I cannot deal with collections, but I requested some rebates - 4 plants that will die because they have no water and decorative rocks that I did not want or need and they used MY OWN ROCKS (so effectively said they delivered boulders that htey did not), but still charged me. Also, they took back quite a bit of the ground cover gravel without crediting it back to me. They did graciously credited me two of the plants for a whole $150. The only positive thing I have to say is that the workers I spoke to (absolutely no leadership) were nice and friendly. They seemed unaware of what to do many times, but they were a nice group. read more

On March 31, a Red Shovel technician came to my Albuquerque home to fix a leaking irrigation line. Despite paying nearly $800 for the repair, the leak was not fixed, if not made worse. No warranty was offered on the work. When I asked for the leak to be fixed, I was told that because I signed their contract, the problem was mine and not theirs. They offered to fix the leak for an additional investment of $5,000 to $8,000 which I of course declined. I've noticed from other reviews that signing their contract resulted in the company absolving itself of any accountability. These are the worst business ethics I've encountered in my 30 years of being an Albuquerque resident. BTW: called TLC to fix the leak, which TLC did in about 2 hours of time for less money. Don't waste your time and money on Red Shovel. Call TLC instead. read more

I've struggled whether to post this or not. I chose to so no one else experiences what I experienced and that RS can make improvements. It starts with the consultation when an employee came out to my house to see where we wanted trees and bushes placed. Two of the 4 trees were Japanese Maple trees. We had the trees and bushes planted on 6/22/23. That day was the start of 95+ degrees in our area for well over a month. I followed RS's instructions verbatim but the trees were not responding. I called about 30-40 days after they were planted and I was told that the JM trees do not do well in hot weather. Something the sales rep should have relayed to me when she was here at my house. I followed the instructions given to me but it wasn't helping. The next phone call, they said they would have one of their experts call me back to come out and look them over. I never received a call back and I had to call them after 2 weeks of no calls. They replaced one of the JM trees because it was dead. I continued the watering instructions throughout the fall and winter. By the end of spring, the other JM and the other 2 original trees were in rough shape. I call a couple times and yet couldn't get a call back. I finally called and said I wanted to get a quote on replacing the 3 sick trees. After 2 weeks I called back and the woman said someone emailed me with a quote(which never came). I finally called back and asked about having the trees removed w/o replacement. They said they could only cut it at the base and I would have to dig up the rest. Needless to say, I will no longer use their services. Terrible communication all around. read more

I scheduled an appointment and was told, for a tech to come out, I would be charged a diagnostic fee of $150. I explained they had been here twice before and had already had the system diagnosed. The response was "we always charge that". I reluctantly agreed, thinking they would actually thoroughly diagnose the problem with our sprinklers. I was given an arrival window on June 4th, between noon and 2 pm. After waiting 2 hours I was told the tech was running late and it would be another 30 minutes. Upon arrival I turned on the sprinklers for the tech. He walked around them for 2 minutes and said all 12 should be replaced. After receiving a quote for an additional $500 I told him that was too much and he left. I was looking for an actual diagnosis and detailed recommendations for what should be done. Spending 2 minutes and declaring they should all be replaced is not a thorough diagnosis. I have since learned that replacing all 12 sprinklers is not necessary and an easy adjustment. My credit card was charged $150.66 for 2 minutes of "diagnosis". We called to complain and requested a refund which was denied. Calling Red Shovel was a mistake! read more

I requested a quote for irrigation work. Seth came out, was very pleasant and we discussed what I was looking for. He said I would get a quote by email in a day or two. It took several calls before I got the quote. I asked if someone could stop by so we can do a walk through to make sure I understood what all was involved in the quote. Seth came by and we walked through all the items. There were some that weren't needed so he said that he would email a revised quote. That was on June 12, 2024. Today is June 27, 2024 and I still don't have my revised quote and I don't get any responses to repeated requests for the revised quote. I liked what they had to say but if they can't respond to a simple text how can I expect them to do any work. I would give no stars if it was possible. read more

I contacted Red Shovel for help with our yard. We have a 1/4 acre city lot here in the heights of burque. Due to our circumstances the yard got away from us and we had a front to back category 5 mess. From the first call to signing the bill at the end of the day these folks have been and are professional, attentive, and just plain easy to communicate with. I was able to get an appointment within a few weeks. Not bad for busy leaf / holiday clean up season. I received a reminder 2 days before and a call from the estimator/crew foreman the day before to confirm the appointment. Anfernie called about 10 min out the morning of to give a heads up. I was able to put the dogs away and open the gate. Anfernie arrived on time and ready to work. We walked the property with Anfernie listening intently to everything I said and was effortless in getting everything arranged and considered for what I wanted done. He quickly gave me an estimate for everything and I was surprised by how fair and easy to understand it was. At this point I gave the green light. This was at about 8:30. Within minutes there were 3 trucks and a handful of people getting to work. I was very impressed with this. We all have hired those two guys who work their tails off but take 3 days longer and 25% more $ to get the job done. Red shovel could not be further from that situation. These folks show up in force and have a deep bench. They have modern equipment and the people skilled at running it. Nobody broke anything at all. None of my stuff went missing. These folks were all over our yard the whole day through doing all manner of yard work. Two small trees and 5+ big truckloads later everything that was agreed upon and even a few nice touches like weeding our beds was done. At some point there were 9 people on property going full bore. I don't think they hire anyone with a slow gait. Anfernie approached with the bill tablet and I braced for the bad news. To my surprise it was exactly what we agreed on. Everyone was professional, polite, attentive, and hardworking. What a breath of fresh air. I would recommend Red Shovel to friends and family. I plan to continue reimagining our yard with them. Thank you Red Shovel for a job well done. The value of their work in my opinion is outstanding. read more

They must be busy because 2 different departments ghosted us. I've been all please, thank you, and patient with an low effort asks, so I'm not sure what's up? We started with replacing our old irrigation system with a new interface, and the guys were great and helped with some great details about irrigation. But then when I tried to open it the next day it fell out of the wall. They didn't secure it so it just flopped out, and the wires are exposed. At the same time we were working on a plan to update our front yard and was given a full quote and plan without anyone being at the house. When I asked a few questions over email, and then followed up... no reply. Then someone came out to help with a dying tree. He was very nice and helpful in person but again, when had a question to get the job started... no reply. read more

They really deserve no stars. I received an estimate to have irrigation work done but they never returned my email or calls about making an appointment. I was however charged for the estimate. I don't mind paying for an estimate, my issue is if they ever plan on doing the work or are they just sending people out to give the estimate to collect the fee with no intention of scheduling the work. When I called and spoke to management, I was told the estimate is a non refundable fee for the estimate whether they do the job or not. However, we were never given the opportunity to schedule the job so we went with someone else after waiting 30 days to here back from them. I visited my mother in law and witnessed the robbery of not only a senior citizen but an active duty military person. On top of her service fee she was charged $100 for a plastic washer and to plant grass seed in the small patches of dirt she has was an extra $400 . Well... good job on the commercial. Not sure the point of having a great commercial if your staff completely sucks. First weird thing: doing a zoom meeting to discuss my yard rather than just looking at the yard. Second weird thing: Isaac not showing up for the first meeting until a day later. Third weird thing: Isaac leaving his zoom up and open for the second meeting but then not bothering to get on the zoom call so I just watched the office conversation for several minutes before I bounced. Done with this company already and no clue if they are any good at landscaping but they for sure suck at running a business. read more

I was very excited to use red shovel because they had wonderful online reviews. The wait time for a quote and service was very long. The quoted price for my irrigation installation was a little above average from the other quotes I got but I chose red shovel because of their reviews. Josh and Brandon were sent out to do the entire job. The quote was for 3 days and it took double this. When the men arrived, they were expecting to only do 600 sqft but my quote was for 1600 sqft. One worker, Josh, was very aggressive about the miscommunication but after calling Chris things were straightened out and they began working. I was outside doing work for a good portion of time while the men were there. Josh complained quite a bit about the job, the miscommunication, and the company in general. After I left, I was told that Josh was taking to my electrician about me. The entire experience wirh Josh was very unprofessional. Now let's talk about the work that was done. Awful. The men didn't grade the ground nor did they set up lines to align and level the sprinkler heads. The heads were tilted, not set up in straight lines, set to different heights, and there was even one head missing. To top it off, they installed 4 rows instead of the agreed upon 3 rows, I still don't understand why they did this. The manifold was not installed where I wanted it. I'd imagine it was because the men didn't want to finish digging up a yucca root. The manifold was installed tilted and crooked. The wiring was an awful mess. One shut off valve was installed in the middle of a walk way. The plastic housing for the wiring has a huge hole in it so dirt and sand keeps pushing into the wiring area. They tried covering the hole with cardboard. The cardboard quickly got wet and was pushed out of the way. The manifold was even leaking. I've had to ask red shovel to send people back to make fixes several times. When other workers came out to make fixes, they seemed amazed at the terrible work that was done at the property. Twice I had to call to have them fix the alignment and height of the heads, and once for the because some heads water constantly while other heads don't run at all. Personally, I wouldn't recommend using red shovel. Terribly over priced for the quality of work. read more

I am VERY! VERY! disappointed with Red Shovel landscaping. I had a couple yard maintenance companies come out to give me estimates on my yard and one gave me an estimate of $600 and the other gave me an estimate of $800. I figured I'd call Red Shovel because I use them about six years ago and they did an excellent job and charged me about $850. So I called Red Shovel and they came out and looked at my yard. After standing out there for a very long time, they came back and they gave me an estimate of.....wait for it.....$3300 OMFG!!! Have they lost their damn minds?¿?!! And my yard was less messy than it was the last time they did it. I obviously wasn't an idiot and hired the $600 estimate. I can't imagine anybody actually using red shovel,..specially at that price. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm assuming they're going out of business and trying to make some money before that. I would never recommend Red Shovel to anybody! If I could give zero stars I would. We requested a quote for a landscaping project 3 weeks ago. We were told a $200 fee would be charged and would apply towards the landscape total. They took our money and never gave us a quote. My husband called after 2 weeks of hearing nothing and was told it normally takes 2 weeks to get a quote. It's been 3 weeks and he called again to be told the $200 is non refundable. No quote, and they still are trying to keep our money. Do not do business with these jokers. We are taking this up with our credit card company and also issuing a claim with the Attorney General for fraudulent business practices. Beware of this company! read more

Couldn't even get to the business part of having our lawn done. My wife and I called to get an estimate and simply ask for more information about the business like if they accept payment plans, if the collect payment after or before work is done. What type of services they provide and we were answered by an extremely rude gentleman. Very arrogant person who persistently told us that they "are very proud of their work" which is understandable but just because my wife simply asked about payment plans which we weren't planning on doing in the first place just getting more information about the business itself he told us, "if you're on a budget then this probably isn't the best place for you." I feel extremely bad for the owners for having such a rude representative who's probably deterring business because of his arrogance. Will never call Red Shovel for any lawn needs.
