Red Springs is one of my favorite spaces right next to Red Rock. The great advantage here is that there is no fee to enjoy it and parking is free (for now). I like coming here in the fall when the many trees here are changing color; it makes me feel like we do have an autumn even in the desert. The boardwalk that traverses the space is nice for strolling and you have excellent views of some of Red Rock without having to drive into the loop. read more

As one of the only *free* stroller accessible spots up in Red Rock, red springs board walk is one of my favorite places to go! If you would prefer a more traditional hiking experience there are also a few easy trails heads right off of the parking lot as well. Beautiful, free way to witness the beauty of Red Rock Canyon instead of needing to pay and reserve a time inside the official Red Rock Canyon park. There's some beautiful trails accessible within this and Calico Basin--Turtlehead Peak, Calico Tanks, Brownstone, Guardian Angel, are just a few to name. There are some trail markers up to help guide you but easiest way is to use a trails/hiking app. If you're looking to have a family gathering, they also offer free picnic areas with basic charcoal grills. There's bathrooms, too, so you don't have to deal with "that" level of nature! This area is prone to car break-ins, so please take your valuables with you, leave them at home entirely, or at least hide them in the trunk/out of sight. Rock climbers rejoice--there's sport/trad and bouldering routes accessible from either parking lot. There's probably not huge multi pitches--at least not without a solid hike in--but you're not short on options! read more

It's accessed from West Charleston. There is a sign from the street to make it easy to find. It is a turn off before the Redrock scenic loop entrance. This park is free! Boardwalk walking trail is very nice. A large covered picnic area and restroom facility provided. No running water. But hand sanitizer and toilet tissue was in stock. I saw some wildlife along the boardwalk. Very scenic and serene. Built in seating benches are provided along the boardwalk. read more

Did you know that Red Spring is in Calico, which means it's outside of Red Rock Canyon National Park, just right next to it, but without an entrance fee! Red Spring is so close to the city, we call it our favorite "backyard" ... There is a huge parking lot, when you arrive, and it's paved, with multiple restrooms. There is also a giant, covered picnic area! The broad walk is very well maintained, and easily accessed year round! And it is wheelchair accessible! There are printed, educational information all over the place, including pictures of plants and animals you may find here! The covered picnic area is big enough for a large group of visitors, even if you like to have a birthday party or a wedding, etc. The other trails are also easy to explore although there are some harder ones that lead to higher elevation. It is advised to stay on the trails! There is a great chance to see some adventurous rock climbers in the mountains! I heard from some climbers that here we have some of the best rock climbing areas in the country! I personally love the hiking trails here, especially the cooler months! A very nice place to explore featuring picnic area with tables, restrooms, a big enough parking area and breathtaking views of Calico Basin and more. A great place for a wedding ceremony capturing beautiful scenery or even regular photos. Pack a bag of food and drinks to have a picnic then take a nice stroll on the Red Spring Boardwalk. There's benches along the Boardwalk to sit, rest, relax and unplug. A friendly note that you may either have spotty to no reception heading there. Also, there is static on the Boardwalk rails. Very nice outdoor boardwalk around a meadow that's fed by a spring. It's so pretty here and it's free. Bring the entire family as everyone will enjoy this place that's not too far from Vegas. Beautiful free hiking/strolling/walking area 20 mins out of the strip. I saw quite a few life events happened as we were in the board walk. There was a photo shoot for a gender reveal, multigenerational holiday photo shoot, and part of the field had a heart shaped by rose petals (probably a marriage proposal we missed) and just families hanging out with their dog. In short, it's a really pretty area for everyone to enjoy. There is not entrance fee and free parking which is right next to the red rock canyon which does have an admission fee. read more

We have been hiking out in this area- great alternative to going to Red Rock, as it's often less crowded and doesn't require an entrance fee. When looking at wedding venues, we decided to keep things more casual and "us" and booked the boardwalk area for our ceremony - note that to do so, you'll nee to work with a planning company and get a permit, and only specific photographers are permitted to professionally photograph here. Great area with clear signage, covered picnic tables and bathroom. Trails are easy to moderate with some scrambling available the further you go west. The boardwalk was a great setting for us, with perfect weather and a good amount of privacy and space for our intimate gathering. One thing to note - there are several posted plaques/signs to stay on the trail/boardwalk and off of the meadow. It was disappointing to see a photographer shooting engagement photos without a permit, in the meadow, trampling on the grasses. Don't be "that person". read more

Today I'm writing this review on this area. It's located before the Red Rock canyon pay entrance. It's called Red springs. This is a good place to drink your coffee in the morning or take your dogs. You see close encounter with animals birds wild rabbits lizards and today we finally seen a mountain lion. If you're hiking early in the morning like still in the dark I recommend not to go alone please. Despite that we saw the big cat this morning. We will still continue to visit here but it won't be very early in the morning this time. We'll make sure it's broad daylight and still early to catch the cool air. Like I mentioned a good place to take your dogs for a walk as long as it's in a leash good people around good sight and scenery. This place is kind of hidden you might have to look it up on waze. read more

Red Spring is a place I've been to many times. After hikes at Red Rock Canyon, we often stopped here for our after hike Guinness time. Red Spring is also a starting point for some hikes in the area. You can do the Ash Mountain Loop from here, just walk the 1/2 mile long boardwalk around the meadow and see the rock art, or you can merely enjoy the trees and coolness that are here because of the spring water. There is one large pavilion with several tables for picnics. There are also two small areas that have just one table at each. There are restrooms for your convenience. This is a quiet place to come if you want to do an easy hike and get away from the world. Some of the quiet is going. With Red Rock Canyon now requiring reservations, the number of people coming into Calico Basin where Red Spring is located, is increasing because it is outside of the fee area and if you didn't make a reservation for the main part of the NCA, this may be where you see some of the wonderful sandstone of Red Rock Canyon. For whatever reason, this is a super place to visit and enjoy! read more

Tip: When you visit, you'll see quite a number of different species of birds, as well as small animals like rabbits. We were thinking of visiting Red Rock Canyon for our son's early birthday celebration, which was yesterday, but someone in our community mentioned Calico Basin as having something for everyone (trails for hiking, for all levels), as well as a picnic area and a boardwalk. This would be a free family-friendly destination spot. My husband and I are pretty active as well as our soon-to-be eight year old son. We were concerned with my MIL, as she has a bad knee and has difficulty walking. I did some research and printed out some info on the spot. So, we headed there yesterday for lunch and some exploring. We found the large parking lot. We had a covered spot which wasn't in the sun (the party leaving sanitized it- Thank You!) where we had our lunch, which was nice. After our son opened up his gifts, we put everything away, into the cars, so we could do some exploring. There is a bathroom composed of two single ones, side by side. Garbage cans are throughout the area. Signs are posted for picking up dog waste (but we still saw piles of it, so be careful where you step). There were lots of people here. A wedding was scheduled, the party area in the picnic area was reserved for a quarantine birthday celebration, and there were many photo shoots (families, holidays, modeling, etc.) taking place, too. Also, there were many people hiking on the trails too. As for us, we mainly took the boardwalk (warning- static electricity) on the loop with everyone. Informational signs are along the boardwalk trail, so that is useful to learn about the area in more detail. It was pretty warm (unusual, 90s for October; yes, global warming and climate change is very real) so my MIL and her husband left after our first loop. We remained so we could take more pictures (hubby got a new phone so he was testing out the camera- and he was the only one with reception). Lots of wildlife to witness here: we saw so many chipmunks (picnic area), they weren't shy, as well as many birds, and a fast rabbit (not a cottontail) as we ventured more into the boardwalk trail. We saw burrows everywhere so there are other animals here that we didn't see. As for the mountains and the rocks, it is beautiful. As for the plants, and the trees, it is also plentiful. We liked it so much we are returning on my birthday (the last month of the year), when it will be much cooler. And we will actually go on the trails, too. We might not go as high as some hikers, but we will see what our son can handle. read more

Love coming here every weekend to go hiking with my pup. Closest hikes/trails to where we live. Located a few miles before actual Red Rock, so no entrance fee and much less crowded. No reservations required either. Gorgeous views and if you're lucky you might see some wild critters. Great place to picnic, just make sure to pick up after yourselves. You'll see lots of rock climbers here as well. February through May is probably the best time to go as there is very little shade and summer time in Vegas will be wayyyy too hot. read more

I have been to Red Springs a few times over the years. The last time I was there the boardwalk was closed for repairs so I hiked for a ways on the unpaved trails surrounding the area. I had taken my mom to show her the springs and petroglyphs but with the boardwalk closed we could not see them on that visit. Now that a little time has passed and the boardwalk has reopened, we made our return. The new boardwalk is great. Composite planks rather than natural wood so they will hold up better in the southern Nevada sun. Sturdy metal railing to keep you safe. Clear interpretive signage telling you what you are looking at. The main problem I had with is on this more recent venture was static electricity. I was getting shocked almost every time I touched the railing. Even after just a few steps. Not sure if it was dry wind, the composite planks, or a combination of the two. This is a great little place to take in some views, get some fresh air, and go for a little walk. There are more trails around than just the boardwalk. If you are in the mood for more of a hike than a walk, Red Springs can accomodate that too. Get out there and move a little. read more

Everyone has their own way of relieving on the job stress, and what I do is like to get outside. Luckily for me, I Iive close to this little area just outside of Redrock Canyon. It takes me about 7-10 minutes and I have arrived. This is an easy location to find just past the Welcome to Redrock Canyon sign. You make a quick right where the sign says Calico Basin and follow the road straight into the park. This park features a large parking area, a boardwalk that takes you all around a large area of wild shrubs and wildflowers with some educational signs doting the vast, open space. There is a large picnic area at the base where families often gather to enjoy lunch or dinner. Public restrooms are on site as well. Often, you see limos out here with happy and excited just married couples taking pictures out here. It is a photographers dream in terms of capturing some exquisite and natural pictures. This time the boardwalk was closed as declared unsafe to use at this time which is highly unusual so perhaps some of the wooden planks need repair. I like to hike away from the main park and get up amongst the red rocks, giant boulders and secret hiding places. If you go on a weeknight evening like I usually do, the park isn't too busy. Lots of rock climbers out making their way up large rocks and sometimes they are hard to see as they tend to blend in with the rocks. It is so pretty up here and although you can't totally escape from the human population, if you look carefully you can find your own little spot to just sit still, listen to the horses neighing in the distance, view the horizon and just breathe. read more

I love coming here. It's so peaceful and I have yet to ever see it busy. It's great for a nice stroll with the kids, A friend or just yourself. It's nice to enjoy the sunshine and be surrounded by nature. I like having conversations about history with my son here, teaching him about the petroglyphs etc. He also loves when I point out the animal foot prints and tracks which the high raised path protects. It does break my heart a little to see people straying off the path. I don't think they realize how much strategy and effort went into conserving the grounds here. Particularly if you bring pets, please keep them on the path rather than letting them tear through the protected land. I definitely recommend visiting this place. It's very small and it's a quick walk but so very special. read more

Ample free parking and also parking spots along the road. Beautiful rock colors and formations with mellow trails. We took the grandsons here and they spent hours crawling around and exploring the rocks and caves. Great for all ages and the trails can be as easy or difficult as you choose. read more
