I don't get the negative reviews. YOU CAN GO TO REDCAPS CORNER AND PLAY ANY GAME YOU WANT. FREE. Did I mention the part about they will let you bring a game in and you can play games with your friends for free? Because they have a library which is pretty damn big too!! :-) :-) :-) Schedules change, but in the fall of 2024 they have organized nights for magic the gathering players ...I think on Mondays and Fridays ... You can still come in, but it's going to be packed. Other nights you can just come in with your friends and play games. How nice is that? Now when a store is giving this much to a community, providing free games to play for anyone who walks in, not to mention game experts who will gladly teach you a game, WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE OF BUYING A GAME? This is a business. A very, very generous business. They have to make money in order to keep the doors open so that you and your friends can play games here for free. This is not your parents house. :-) Try going to a gaming Cafe where you'll have to rent space and you're expected to buy food or drinks. ...Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking that business model, I'm just saying that *this* business model is freaking generous! My old review seems to have disappeared, but Redcaps Corner can't be beat. For someone who has grown up craving friends to play D&D with, this may be something that becomes a weekly obsession. On Tuesday nights starting at 6 pm they have a league for Pathfinder that runs till 10 o'clock or better. Pathfinder is an off shoot of D&D 3.5 and it's amazing. I'm kind on the fence as I want to buy all their stuff, and they're just about to revamp things after 10 years of playing it their own way. To be part of the evening it works best if you sign up through a website called war horn. I've only managed to do it correctly one time, but you might be better at understanding it all. I also have 4 kids so I'm not free to take advantage of it like I'd like. On Thursday nights they do the same for D&D. I know they run 5e, but may be messing around with some of the older versions as well. At the old store, my first visit the people working behind the desk for amazingly welcoming and informative, and maybe even cooler did not ridicule me or disregard me as I was completely new to learning about Pathfinder and their evenings of in-store gaming. Probably because you're in the environment you're going to get somebody who is an Uber gamer/collector and they will seem to gain experience by letting you know your place of new town idiot, but aside from "that dude" the place is worth finding and adding into your social experience. read more

I've gone from being a newbie at Redcap earlier this year to a regular. I mostly go to play mtg (draft and standard) and the events are (mostly) well attended and always well run. The other guys who are usually there for draft and standard are super nice...doesn't matter if you're a rules expert or brand new to magic, always a good time. My partner does adventurers league D&D in Thursday's and has tons of fun as well. Their singles selection is a bit hit or miss, but that would be my only real critique. I always prefer to buy from the store I play at, but sometimes I have to go to another or to eBay to fill out deck lists. read more

This is a phenomenal little game store that looks to be the place to go for this sort of stuff in the central part of Philadelphia. You won't find comics here this is a straight up game store. The primary audience and stock is board games and miniatures stuff. RPGs do have a place here but the selection is markedly smaller compared to the minis and board games. THey do have a good assortment of dice and accoutrements however, and happily take special orders. The front of the store has a good bulletin board out front for "looking for group" type posts. The real crown jewel of this place is the play space. On the first floor there is a large area that was full of people playing various miniatures. Even better is the upstairs area which is entirely given over to tables and chairs for public play; minis or board games or RPGs or what have you. This is capped off by a solid selection of loaner board games. Physically the store is well kept and welcoming. The staff on service were friendly and very helpful and it I get the impression that it is a very tightly run operation. If you are into tabletop gaming at all this store is a must visit. read more

Really nice upstairs location with accessible bathrooms. Enough space, especially for the city. I think the store's existence helps the positive vibrance of the neighborhood slightly. Very knowledgeable staff, usually very friendly. Maybe the occasional "city like attitude" from one or two staffers. What kills this location for me is some/many of the people who show up for board games tend to be very cliquey or territorial. They might be okay if you just catch a game at the last minute, but this is probably a bad place to look for friends if you don't find some other way to make a connection. Makes the place seem like it's lacking warmth. First I thought it was just me until a friend I came with said the same thing on his own. It's probably a great place for MTG, but just not into that personally. read more

Friendly and knowledgeable staff, copious and clean play spaces, deep inventory, inclusive politics and policies, great community hub, and an amazing calendar of events. The 3600 Lancaster location of Redcap's Corner was our FLGS, so we were excited to go see the new location and decided on a whim to trek out on foot from CC to see it. And that detail is going to lead to the only real knock against the place, and I'll get it out of the way at the start: this new location is not wheelchair accessible. (The old spot, like this one, still had an upstairs gaming space we couldn't use, but we could still AT LEAST get in the door easily.) Luckily, my partner decided to wheel out by hand rather than motorized, because if she took her scooter, she couldn't have gone in at all and we'd just have to turn around and go home. In the end, we did a little wheelchair juggling and got up the 3 stairs out front and then were fine. Aside from that, everything about the new digs is an improvement. The space is bright with high ceilings, hardwood floors, and separate, clean bathrooms. The mini's tables look brand new and are at comfortable standing height (tho that's another knock re: wheelchair access) and there seems to be a lot of storage space so the place doesn't feel claustrophobic at all. As usual, there were female gamers there (always an awesome thing about Redcaps) and everyone we spoke to was great. The fella behind the counter was really helpful and friendly, whether we were asking about MTG booster boxes or that bit about "Maybe a wheelchair ramp wouldn't hurt?". Regarding that accessibility, he assured us that while he didn't know specifics, it has come up in conversation and it's being looked into. And, based on the store's history, on the owner's past transparency on things that mightn't have been up to snuff, we have every confidence that it IS being looked into. (Hey, this is a shop that has Women's MTG and LGBTQ nights at one of their locations! So, yay!) In the end, the move seems very successful, and we're very lucky we don't have to stop visiting based on the accessibility issues, but it WILL slow us down. Overall, good work, team! [UPDATE 2/11/17 --- Because of the accessibility issues, our habit of visiting once a month before the move has turned into once a year. Still no wheelchair ramp at the Lancaster location and the entire upstairs gaming area is off-limits as well. Were told (sullenly) that the Baltimore location sales floor IS accessible but, again, the gaming space is not. This cuts us completely out of Tabletop Day and pretty much spending any money there again... The bathrooms, which ARE accessible (if you can climb stairs to get in the front door) and started out really quite nice, are now pretty gross... These details are such a shame for a place that hosts regular LGBTQ events as it would be nice to give them to give them our money. But, we can't.] read more

A real gem. The first floor is retail space and tables for Warhammer and miniature games; the upstairs has dozens of tables and room for around 100. There is regular gaming event programming basically every night of the week, across a variety of games and formats. The owners work to foster an inclusive space, and as a queer person, I feel more comfortable there than I have in any other similar gaming space. An unbelievable selection, great prices, and knowledgeable friendly staff round out this magical place. Philly is lucky to have a place like this. read more

Not what it used to be. I remember the old location before the first move when they used to be on Penn's campus. Several bookshelves filled with tabletop RPG books, dice, miniatures, all in plain view as soon as you walked in. Tables in the back and upstairs for gaming, friendly staff and reasonable policies. I remember people borrowing books to play games with like a lending library (that's how I learned of my beloved Pathfinder), and can't imagine they'd be okay with that these days. I remember they also had several tall shelves dedicated to board games, another thing that has fallen to the reign of almighty Magic. Went in last night and this place has changed so much. The focus has changed to Magic pretty much exclusively, with a tiny little shelf of tabletop RPG books toward the back. I own almost as many RPG books as they have for sale, and if they didn't charge full retail price, I could buy their entire stock without making a big dent in my wallet. Looking at their calendar it sadly matches many gaming stores these days: dominated by Magic with a couple events for tabletop gaming. I remember when that was the other way round: a calendar dominated by tabletop gaming to the point where they had to host games at buildings on Penn's campus because they didn't have the room. I remember when one of their customers custom-built gaming tables for them. I remember many afternoons that turned into late nights spent rolling dice on those tables. Oh, well. Magic makes them more money because it's designed to. It's just sad to see them focus so much on what makes them money to the exclusion of everything else. Speaking of money, I went in to purchase a sourcebook. Not only were they charging full price (40$ for a tiny hardcover!), they don't even accept returns for printed books. The cashier wasn't the most attentive and had to fiddle around on a computer for five minutes to even find their (lack of) return policy, and I got the distinct impression that he was rather annoyed I interrupted the card game he was playing when I came in. He provided minimal help for me finding what I was looking for (just directed me to the aforementioned paltry collection of RPG books, with the apathetic air of someone who doesn't care for the products they're selling). Didn't ask me what I was looking for, what I was playing at the time, nothing like that. Just got back to his game. It's a real shame that Redcap's is the only gaming store in the entire city given their focus on collectible (i.e. high profit) products. RIP Redcap's, killed by capitalism. read more

I've been a competitive MTG player for what is probably way too long, and this is still one of the top stores I have stepped foot in at this location. They have an expansive upstairs play area, an array of tournaments scheduled all times of the week, and very reasonably priced items for my hobby. Additionally they have hands down the best customer service of any LGS I have been to, and I have seen a lot of stores. I would highly recommend this store for anyone looking to play MTG, Warhammer, Star Trek TCG, Hearthstone, etc. read more
