Whenever we're in South St we swing by this comic store; It has everything from classic Marvel and DC, Funko Pops, and even the latest manga. My daughter was psyched because they had Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer maga she likes. The vibe is fun and nostalgic with vintage vending catcha machines and old video games around.

What a cool store! Comic (duh!) books, books, FUNKO POPS, posters, tees and old school standing video games and cool decor. Top it will knowledgeable and nice employees, and right on South Street! My daughter got a Michael Myers POP and a tote bag. It was a lot of fun :)

Geek paradise. Comics? Check. T-shirts from awesome movies/comics? Check. Action figures? Check. That totally badass X-Men arcade game from the early 90s? Check. (But it was broken when I was there.) Really nice guy running the cash register? Check. Cafe-type area to enjoy your new purchases and have a soda? Check. I've been to other comic book stores that were bigger and had a better selection, but Atomic City is an eclectic combination of geekery that should be a stop on any self-respecting nerd's tour of Philly.

Okay, this review is definitely for a certain demograhic, but here goes: This little CC comic book store is super friendly and very helpful. If you are wondering why you would come here, just know that there is more to comics than superman. The staff here will help you find a great comic book for any boy or girl no matter what their hobby. I came here to get some really funky art work. I found a really cool comic book (that reminded me of the Issac's art work in Hereos) and framed them. I used the rest to wrap the gift. And now I am officially the coolest cousin.

Great selection, but why don't the cashier's bag the books when you ask them to? Kinda rude

This is one of my favorite neighborhood shops. I love to stop in to see what's new and pick up a comic while I walk around on South St.

Their prices are a bit higher than you'd expect online or at a chain bookstore, but I find that very justifiable as all of their profits go towards running the shop and other social justice missions. The volunteers at the store were great as well and were happy to answer questions or direct us to where certain books were.

First, to address the person claiming "they are all racist here"…read more This is an ANARCHIST BOOK STORE. They have books on critical race theory, yes. They also have books on queer studies, feminist literature, Muslim education... the list goes on and on. Do you understand what anarchy is? At any rate I seriously doubt the black and brown employees who have or do currently work or volunteer at Wooden Shoe would appreciate being called racist, so why don't you, you know, fuck off and shop somewhere else? That being said. Wooden Shoe is an exceptional resource for books on any number of topics. They tend to skew toward literature on social justice issues that run the gamut, so you're not going to find the latest pop culture biography or new fiction. Books are full price, so expect to pay $35 for a new hardcover, but they also have a ton of $1-5 second hand books, plus a really cool section of free and cheap zines and small print publications. I've been shopping here for it seems like a decade, and as a queer, gender non-conforming biracial person, the idea that they are racist is comical bordering on fully ignorant.

I met him immediately upon entering the store, as he was sitting right near the door. His name is Dr. Pickles and he is just as lovely as the shop he calls home. The shop itself is well organized and has so many niche categories to browse and appreciate. As the shop's name suggests, they have ample signage outlining the rules and guidelines for trading with them. As a bonus, the shop (and Dr. Pickles!) are active on Instagram sharing the latest that's up with the shop. I am absolutely planning on returning to this shop during my next trip to Philadelphia.

They've also got records, old postcards, and I think I spotted a tote. To me, it felt *generally* organized inside, but YMMV, right? Bring your old books in to trade - read their policies on their site: https://www.phillybooktrader.com/menu - and while you're there, search for deals. The more books you buy, the more you'll save. Find them in Old City, convenient to the 2nd Street SEPTA subway stop. [1] There's a shop cat here! The famous Dr. Pickles is usually taking a catnap, so respect their space. Meow.

Because they have a library which is pretty damn big too!! :-) :-) :-) Schedules change, but in the fall of 2024 they have organized nights for magic the gathering players ...I think on Mondays and Fridays ... You can still come in, but it's going to be packed. Other nights you can just come in with your friends and play games. How nice is that? Now when a store is giving this much to a community, providing free games to play for anyone who walks in, not to mention game experts who will gladly teach you a game, WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE OF BUYING A GAME? This is a business. A very, very generous business. They have to make money in order to keep the doors open so that you and your friends can play games here for free. This is not your parents house. :-) Try going to a gaming Cafe where you'll have to rent space and you're expected to buy food or drinks. ...Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking that business model, I'm just saying that *this* business model is freaking generous! On Tuesday nights starting at 6 pm they have a league for Pathfinder that runs till 10 o'clock or better. Pathfinder is an off shoot of D&D 3.5 and it's amazing. I'm kind on the fence as I want to buy all their stuff, and they're just about to revamp things after 10 years of playing it their own way. To be part of the evening it works best if you sign up through a website called war horn. I've only managed to do it correctly one time, but you might be better at understanding it all. I also have 4 kids so I'm not free to take advantage of it like I'd like. On Thursday nights they do the same for D&D. I know they run 5e, but may be messing around with some of the older versions as well. At the old store, my first visit the people working behind the desk for amazingly welcoming and informative, and maybe even cooler did not ridicule me or disregard me as I was completely new to learning about Pathfinder and their evenings of in-store gaming. Probably because you're in the environment you're going to get somebody who is an Uber gamer/collector and they will seem to gain experience by letting you know your place of new town idiot, but aside from "that dude" the place is worth finding and adding into your social experience.
