Come as you are, in your pj's, angry, tear stained, unmatched socks...you are home! There is never a shortage of grace, laughter or hugs. Kid's Ministry/Sun School is delightful. My little man is neurodiverse & they do a great job making him feel loved, welcome, safe & included. I never need to apologize, they meet him where he is at each week. As a single mom, many weeks I go in exhausted, depleted, overwhelmed, at my wit's end, and I always leave feeling light, rejuvenated, hopeful, grateful, calm & grounded. Pastor John delivers amazing sermons, he is well read, humble, has a gift for connecting seemingly unrelated dots & gently planting seeds. His wife Kate, is simultaneously the most grounded person I know, and yet, the free-ist spirit. There is always room for sharing your talents, gifts, suggestions. They have a worship team which will make you weap sing :) There is always coffee before service and lunch after. As well as a prayer team, who can provide individual prayers, should you need that, post every service. Whether you are 3 months old or 103 yrs old, you will feel accepted & want to dwell here. There are ample Life Together Groups and activities going on throughout the week. So there is always something pleasant to look forward to. Our two favorite events are Harvest Festival (Halloween weekend each yr) and the Spring Festival (Easter weekend each yr). Think carnival meets fair. Open the anyone in the community and free. I could go on and on...Even when we moved to UT, we would watch FVC sermons remotely. We feel so blessed to call this church our home church.

My family withdrew from Holy Name of Mary after only one year, and I want to share our experience…read moreso other parents understand why. Our decision is based entirely on the conduct and leadership of the principal, Mrs. Berumen, which we found consistently unprofessional, dismissive, and completely misaligned with the values a Catholic school should uphold. At the beginning of the school year, I raised a concern about comments made by my daughter's teacher during Open House. She spoke about visiting shamans during her travels and's other religious leaders and placed those trinkets from those visits at the prayer section of the classroom. This is the section where the children go pray near at the crucifix. I found this inappropriate for a Catholic learning environment. When I brought this to the principal, she dismissed my concern and told me that Holy Name of Mary "is a liberal school and welcomes all religions." I explained that while that may be appropriate in a public school, I specifically pay for a Catholic education rooted in Catholic teaching. The concern was brushed aside. As the year went on, the situation worsened. During the 7th grade overnight camp, my daughter witnessed three girls taking photos of a classmate while she slept and drooled, mocking her and laughing. According to my daughter, this classmate has been excluded and ridiculed for a long time. My daughter reported the incident because she believed it was the right thing to do. Months later, my daughter came home begging to leave the school. When I met with the principal to understand why, the interaction was shocking. She looked directly at my daughter and said, "Now Victoria, you know why the girls don't like you. Tell the truth." My daughter was stunned. The principal continued, saying that Victoria should not expect to be liked if "the first thing she did as the new girl was tell on the other girls." Instead of addressing the bullying or modeling Christian leadership, the principal suggested that my daughter simply stop spending time with the girl who was being bullied, saying, "She will understand." This was deeply disappointing and completely inappropriate for someone in a leadership role at a Christian school. Towards the end of the year and when we had already made it clear we were moving schools the following year, my daughter was repeatedly written up for minor or unclear reasons, often without proper communication. She felt singled out and alone. When I emailed the principal expressing concern and asking her to stand down as we are leaving next year and there was only less than a month left of the school year, her response was once again unnecessarily rude and dismissive. Her closing statement was especially troubling: "We ask that you respect our team during this transition. If this is not possible, we suggest transitioning Victoria to her new school before the end of the school year. This will allow her to have a fresh start while enabling our staff to focus on our current students." This made it clear that our concerns were viewed as a burden and that my daughter was seen as an inconvenience. Because of the seriousness of these issues, I contacted Father Chris directly and later reached out to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to ensure they were aware of what was happening. Despite escalating the concerns through the proper channels, nothing changed. The principal remains in her leadership role, and the environment continues to reflect the same dismissive and abrasive culture we experienced all year. For context, I paid the full year's tuition upfront and would have continued next year. My son attends Damien High School and will graduate next year. This shows my commitment to Catholic education -- which makes this experience even more disappointing. We are leaving solely because of the principal's conduct. The environment she has created is not supportive, not compassionate, and not reflective of the values this school claims to uphold. I hope the parish and the Archdiocese take a serious look at the culture under her administration, because families deserve better.

"Church shopping" can be difficult and if you're like me, you're looking at reviews to get an idea…read moreof what a church is about. So, I am going to do my best to evaluate the church in a way that will be helpful for others searching. Humanity church is true to its name. There is an overwhelming sense of community here and genuine connection. I felt like I was at a house church in that aspect. My initial impressions upon arriving was to take in the beautiful church building, quaint bit stunning. I arrived a couple of minutes late and was greeted warmly by two ladies. The church community is small enough that you could tell they recognize who the visitors are, but they don't put you on blast as some churches do. The church is definitely charismatic in their worship, preaching, and friendliness. The worship felt like a concert and the sermons were delivered with charisma and conviction. The Holy Spirit is welcome here and the sermons are more "inspired" than a 1-2-3 point sermon. Pastor Nathan brings up a sweat towel to dab at his forehead as he excitedly shares his convictions and relates his message to personal stories to tie in his points. The sermons feel supplemental and appear to be intended to be in conjunction with their "Humanity groups" (life/small groups). It is not taught verse by verse like a Calvary Chapel, but felt more like listening to a speaker at a conference. At the end of the service they push for you to get connected to a group, which I could tell is really a central part of where their community thrives. In addition, prior to my visit, I did some internet investigation on the church and found they have a strong social media presence. Through their church website, I was able to click on a link to their Instagram where there were current and up to date postings, keeping people connected. They are a small church but clearly doing something right to have such an enthusiastic congregation. The only negative comment I have to add is that the worship was not my favorite. There were fog machines and light beams, which really felt too showy to me and was distracting for me to worship. The singers were a bit pitchy, which was also distracting at times. While churches should be inclusive, I also believe that people should be placed where they are gifted and that there should be worship team auditions, as uncomfortable as that may be for some. I would recommend this church to anyone who is comfortable in a charismatic church setting!

After a few months of attending, I started in their Encounter School of Discipleship. I was in a difficult place in my walk with the Lord, so this school was a Godsend. They are devoted to emotional health, which is a treasure these days, and they will walk with you through your darkest days. Secondly, they are committed to the presence of God. As we continue to seek Him, He continues to reveal himself in tangible ways! I am grateful for a church that allows the Holy Spirit to move. Lastly, they have a food bank that literally feeds its congregants and community! The people at Newlife will love you back to life... and there are plenty of ways to give back:)
