Fantastic!! If you are in Crescent City and want to do some adventuring I'd highly recommend this group! Adam, the owner, is great! And he brings his dog along. He gets everything arranged, gets you fitted with the right bike, and sends you out with a guide to get you through the forest on bikes. The guide we had today was Josh and he was very good! ( after biking he added his sweet dog, Annie, to the group for the rafting section!) along our biking he told us some fun facts about the Redwood Trees and some exotic plants! Our biking section of the day was GREAT! It is actually a perfect ride you start on pavement and then you end up on a gravel road with some uphills and some downhill but nothing super steep allowing you to take in the scenery. Can the forest be any more beautiful!! The trees are enormous!! Some have been burned, some struck by lighting, some both!! But they are still standing! After biking we drove to the Smith river where they laid out a great lunch! After lunch we geared up for river rafting down the Smith River, the only un-dammed river in California! It is spectacularly clear! Since we were here in June, the river was not super deep, but we did have some fun rapids and some really nice open spaces that were very mellow, allowing you to take in the scenery! For those more daring there is a stop where you can jump off rocks into the water. The rafting portion lasted about 2 to 3 hours. Our entire day started at 9:30 and we were done around 4 PM. I thought it was a fantastic way to spend the day! I highly recommend them. read more

Our party of 12 and a baby had a great ride through the Redwoods. The bikes worked great. We had one squeaky bike, but it soon became an inside joke because we could always hear where that person was along the road. Our bikes were dropped off at The Wooden Covered Bridge and we rode to the Grove of Titans. There are a few other hikes along the way. The road is mostly unpaved, but no big deal. You do have to yield to cars, but it also wasn't a problem. The company was easy to work with and super nice. This was the way to see this beauty area! read more

Since I was young, I have always wanted to visit the Redwoods and kayak down the Smith river. I like to book outdoor activities whenever I travel to national parks and decided to book a half-day scenic kayak trip with Redwood Rides. This was my first visit to Redwood National Park and felt this would be the best way to jump right in. Redwood Rides offers all sorts of tours that include biking, hiking, and kayaking for all ages and skill levels. My trip down the Smith River was very relaxing and enjoyable. The Smith River is located within Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and is accessible only by non-motorized watercraft (which makes it so peaceful). Andie was our tour guide and did a great job of educating us about the surrounding area. The scenery was so beautiful and water was so clear. We even stopped and did a mini hike at Stout Grove. Our family with three sons did the river rafting in the afternoon down the Smith River and it was a great experience. Our guide was the owner and he was very cognizant of safety both for us rafters and the kayakers that came with us. He took us for a short walk in a redwood grove and passed on some great knowledge about the redwoods. Overall the trip was great - we even got to see a river otter! Would definitely recommend! Pro tip: if you're headed out in the afternoon in 60-65 degree weather in a raft (not the kayaks), be sure to ask for the extra fleeces. It got a bit chilly. read more

Had THE BEST afternoon kayak adventure on the Smith River in August, in a tandem kayak with my sister and our guide Jamie. I think we got lucky, we had a private tour, just the 2 of us and our guide Jamie who was amazing. First off, listen to them when they say you will get wet! Prepare to just wear a bathingsuit bottom and top and/or the waterproof top they provide. I tried to wear leggings and my own water resistant top, and was soaking wet within the first 10 minutes. The rapids were so fun, I always felt super safe and really enjoyed it. Jamie took us for a cliff jump which was really fun, and then a little hike. I cannot recommend this enough as a break from walking and driving around the forest, and getting to kayak down rapids on the river! read more

On a road trip and decide to stop at Society Hole early in the day. The beach is completely empty. Then a van for Redwood Rides pulls up and parks as close as it possibly can perpendicular to the front end of my car blocking me in. The driver exits the van and walks up the path and disappears. It took me a few moments to realize he wasn't coming back anytime soon. 100% dick move. Do not recommend based on employee artitude. read more

Words can't even begin to describe the epic time we had kayaking the Smith River. Josh was the best guide ever!! He shared his knowledge of fish/wildlife/trees and the surrounding area while leading us to the coolest swimming area. After we swam & jumped off some of cold into the clear, refreshing water we got back into the kayaks and paddled some more. Our next stop was near the Mill Creek beach area where we disembarked and took a short hike through the majestic redwoods. Josh pointed out how some of the redwood trunks twisted while growing and shared his perspective on why that might be. The entire area experience was so phenomenal & we all appreciated being immersed in nature like this. My kids and I are beyond grateful and were sure to tip him accordingly. As most patrons know, gratuities are always appreciated - although Josh didn't even prompt us to tip and said it wasn't even required. We decided kind of at the last minute that we wanted to go kayaking on the Smith River a few days out. I was able to make a reservation online for kayaks, which includes a shuttle, and we were all set. Communication was good with this company, and everything went very smoothly with our trip. Alex was extremely helpful and friendly and accommodating. He gave us lots of options for things to do and to plan our day. Wow!!!! This was the best experience of our trip. I had some anxiety because of a close call on the Truckee last year, but the AM portion of the kayak trip was perfect. Eric's calm guidance allowed me to feel safe navigating the fun but mellow rapids. The Kayaks were inflatable so strong but forgiving. Eric took us on a hike through The Stout grove and was very knowledgeable. The other family was in the raft with him and had little kids. He know how to keep them engaged while also keeping my teenage kids interested (the rock jumping was a highlight for them). My family and I could not have asked for a better guide and everyone we dealt with at Redwood Rides was fantastic! We went on 07/25/2020 and we did half day which was perfect for little ones and even preteen. We selected a beginners trip because we are somewhat new to kayaking. We had a blast going down the smith river. Our guide was Justin and he was awesome. Very friendly and a safe experience for my 12 year old kayaking on her own (she had never done it before) and my little ones 5 & 7. They loved the rapids (aka rabbits) and couldn't get enough. Bring snacks and water because it's a workout. I would recommend water shoes if you're going in the summer. Definitely will go again next time we are in the area. read more

Loved it! My husband and I did the all day, scenic kayak float down the smith fork while on our honeymoon. Even though the guide played a dirty little trick on us so that we'd flip our boats (causing my hubby to loose his wedding ring on our HONEYMOON! ...that's why they get 4 stars instead of 5.), we had an amazing time! Our guide, Dave was super awesome. It felt like we all knew each other a long time! He knows alot about the local ecology. The shuttle was prompt and it was easy to find the meeting place. Watch out for that Dave! Lol don't let him trick you into going ahead of him. It was a beautiful float with amazimg folks and I've been telling everybody about redwood rides. Great experience kayaking with our little ones aged 5 and 7. Each one of us had a tandem kayak and it was slow/relaxing and small groups enough for us to follow. It is a full half day so expect to spend 5+ hours kayaking swimming and enjoying the scenery! If your kayak is heavier with tandem it will be a challenge FYI so be prepared to have some upper body strength or butt scooching skills when you hit shallow rapids as we got stuck a lot (though just needed some patience and maneuvering). Also be sure to have kiddos listen carefully and hold tight when coming up to rapid as it does get rough. read more

EXCELLENT. We booked a trip last minute after another bike rental company cancelled on us, and Alex was incredibly accommodating and helpful. We rented 6 bikes and rode through the nearly Old Howland Trail and did the Mill Creek hike. Alex and the crew were very helpful accommodating our timing and they gave us everything we needed to enjoy the day. They also gave us hiking recommendations to enhance our day. The redwoods in this area are gorgeous, and biking through them was a truly unique way to see them. Highly recommend and would definitely book again. read more

This was a great experience! The whole family had a blast and were happily exhausted at the end of our multi sport adventure. Our guide was amazing! She was patient with everyone, giving us plenty of time to explore the area and get comfortable with our gear. She was very informative of the trees and history and it really added to the experience. The only con was that the path we rode bikes on was very congested with cars which caused alot of dust. Also it would have been really helpful to have some seating for lunch. Had an amazing experience and would give them 10 's if I could!! I called last minute the night before, hoping to join a kayak trip the next day. VM said to send a text and I received a text response a few hours later, around 8pm. Called and spoke with Adam who booked us for the next morning! Our guides Chris and "Mr. Ham" (my 9 year olds nickname for Matt after becoming his BFF on the trip, poor Matt!) were incredible and I would recommend anyone traveling through the area book a trip with them! We rented some kayaks from these guys and did a section of the river and it was fantastic. Their equipment is very good, they were knowledgable about the Smith River and helped us pick out a section that would fit my family's needs and then Alex met up with us and got us set out to go. We opted to self guide but he still pointed out some things we could do along the way. These guys are young and eager to please and I am excited to come back in a year or two and see how much they have expanded their operation. Redwood Rides is absolutely wonderful! Went kayaking yesterday and decided to do the full day trip. We went 8 miles down the smith river with Ben as our guide. About half way through we were provided with a very healthy lunch of sandwiches, strawberries, and peppers with hummus. We had 4 adults and 2 children so we decided on two tandem kayaks and two singles which was a perfect idea and we were able to switch spots throughout the trip. It was such a wonderful experience to see the gorgeous scenery from the river level. And we even got to do some cliff jumping at the swimming hole at the end of the tour! Highly recommend! read more

Much harder than advertised! We did the old Redwood Highway which is advertised for beginners-advanced so we figured anyone could do it. Though we did survive, it was rough. The "road" is more a trail with thick pine needles, leaves, dirt and roots. Communication was lacking as we drove 10 miles past the trail head to meet the guide, then had to turn right around and go 10 miles back to start the ride. Bikes weren't ideal for the conditions, and we had to walk them down 1/2 mile rough trail to get started. There was never a time that you could coast your bike, basically pedaling for a full 3 hours. I don't know about you but that is too long a spin class for me. Proud that we completed it, especially my 12 year old who is not super experienced on a bike, but wouldn't do it again. read more
