What i like of this store is also the layout, you can enter from 2 different doors and just browse and enjoy every single piece. Some time ago I had the feeling that Alys Grace was a store for 'women of a certain age'...maybe I have arrived to that age and there is few things that I don't like in there.

On the most recent occassion, we were the only two in the shop yet not one of the three employees greeted us. I even stood next to the counter in front of two employees and it was as if my daughter and I were invisible. I believe one of the employees was the owner. A group of three women walked in and were immediately converged upon. They were told about a sale and asked if they needed help. My daughter and I stood appalled at the flagrant favoritism as we continued to be ignored. My daughter and I both realized that the three women were dressed in designer outfits, while my daughter and I were dressed in comfortable shorts and t-shirts. I spend between $2000-$2500 A MONTH at stores like Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Anthropologie (yes, I love to shop). I also wear clothing from Target. Whether I have my designer bag in hand or a Target purse, I would hope to be treated like a valued customer. I used to love to give my money to small boutiques like Alys Grace, but after the way we've been treated the last two times, we will not be returning to this location or their other stores.

As we walk in, we overheard the older woman clerk with white botched hair (Mary?) speak to another customer "that's too big for you" in an annoyed manner, as if the customer was bothersome. The clerk's demeanor and attitude seemed quite negative. I proceeded to walk toward the home section, clerk tells me they're about to close, so I tell her, I'm just here to look around for the last few minutes. I walk past her to the home section, found a painting I wanted to purchase to add to my collection. She speaks over my shoulders "you should look online, they have everything there" in a tone that's very hostile and agitated. She then proceeds to tell me they open at 10 etc, in a manner that just wants to get rid of people from the store. I've never encountered such a lack of professionalism, and negative feeling from a clerk in all of Menlo Park retail. The entire 3 minutes encounter with her was distasteful. We were out by 4:49, without a painting. Ps. Take your money somewhere else.

Everything was cotton, wool, leather, etc. - I found very few synthetics. I loved my first trip to this shop; there were half a dozen items I wanted to take home, but I managed to keep my wallet intact and walked out with 3 new purchases: two 100% cotton button-downs, and a gorgeous navy blazer. I did plenty of brand discovery too, and found many gorgeous items from brands I'd never heard of before, but which I will definitely look into now! Honestly, I could've spent HOURS in this store, and the only reason I didn't buy more was because I'm 6 months pregnant and couldn't try on any bottoms! The owner, Johanna, has great taste, and she has curated such an amazing collection of goods, clothes, jewelry, shoes, etc. There is also a really comfortable small dressing / try on room in the back. The prices are reasonable, and Johanna often has sales and promotions going on which make the prices even more palatable. This is the perfect shop for someone like me, who only wants to shop vintage / second-hand, only wants to buy natural fibers, but do not have the time or patience at this point in my life to sift through Goodwill bins to find the perfect piece. Johanna has done the hard work of curation for me. Thank you!! I will be back and can't wait to be a frequent shopper here in the future!

However, the customer service is atrocious. The first time I visited in December, I was largely ignored until I brought my $1,500 worth of purchases to the register. End of day, holiday season...I get it. I'd want to go home too. But I asked nothing of you as a sales person and was in and out in less than 20m. Fast forward to yesterday. I walked in and my presence wasn't even acknowledged. The sales ladies were busy opening a bottle of celebratory wine and fawning over a husband and wife who were at the tail end of a $5K shopping spree. As I perused the clothes, I found a number of beautiful things that I wanted to try on--however, I could not justify spending good money in a place where I am not treated with a modicum of respect. I have always believed in supporting small businesses--especially boutiques, but Angela will not be added to my rotation. I will stick to Cielo, Blu, Phyllis and Shunzi.

Most recently, I stopped in looking for a cute top for a birthday dinner. The usual boutiques just weren't doing it for me... And it's times like this that Angela's can surprise with a cool new piece. She has started carrying a few of the cool and hip Paul Smith Black label items. Paul Smith is a London-based designer known for taking the classic school girl, or school boy, look and having fun with it -- bright colors, vivid stripes and contrasting patterns with precise and extra sharp tailoring. I walked out with a fabulous little Paul Smith top, light and airy with a ton of vibrant color - perfect for the warming weather! I also saw a few delicate necklaces that I just may be taking a closer look at soon... Bottom line (well, my bottom line): I have noticed that a lot of the pieces, in general, are far more conservative than I prefer. But sometimes I get lucky and find a piece, or designer, I fall in love with! Most recently, Paul Smith. I have now added the designer on my "watch" list - Angela does deliver!
