Walked in 5 mins before closing with my friend to take a peak. We highly anticipated being there in person. As we walk in, we overheard the older woman clerk with white botched hair (Mary?) speak to another customer "that's too big for you" in an annoyed manner, as if the customer was bothersome. The clerk's demeanor and attitude seemed quite negative. I proceeded to walk toward the home section, clerk tells me they're about to close, so I tell her, I'm just here to look around for the last few minutes. I walk past her to the home section, found a painting I wanted to purchase to add to my collection. She speaks over my shoulders "you should look online, they have everything there" in a tone that's very hostile and agitated. She then proceeds to tell me they open at 10 etc, in a manner that just wants to get rid of people from the store. I've never encountered such a lack of professionalism, and negative feeling from a clerk in all of Menlo Park retail. The entire 3 minutes encounter with her was distasteful. I have mixed feelings about this store. I've sold merchandise in the furniture section, quite pleasantly and successfully. My experience here was very good. I've purchased items in the clothing section (and years ago, sold an item). As of late, they seem to be so much more selective and a bit snooty, that I'm not inclined to want to donate any more items (at least in the clothing section). I took in a pair of classy needlepoint slide sandals that I'd hardly worn (5 times max) that were in mint condition on the top side. Because there was some wear on the soles -- bottomside-- (of course there was), they wouldn't consider them. SO, if you choose to donate shoes here, best you've only worn them on a carpeted floor OR not at all, since they may well reject them. I'm sorry to write a bad review, but afterwards is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Mary, the older woman with white hair, is unfriendly to the point of rudeness. I've spent $5,000+ in this store but I won't be back. On Wednesday a salesperson called to say that two paintings I wanted were $1700 each. I agreed to the price and began giving her my credit card number. Mid transaction the clerk said she had to call me back. The next day Kate, the owner, called quoting a much higher price. it's strange to me that both the owner and some of the staff are so disrespectful, arrogant, and unprofessional. read more

Consigning beware... My husband and I consigned several high end , unused and couple gently used designer articles to the Menlo Park Afterwards shop with terrible results. Against my better judgment I allowed the sales people to convince me that I needed to leave my items through the holidays for a total of five months. Apparently five months for someone to use some of these items ... At the end of our consignment period my husband and I picked up our items. Returning to our home I examined each item and was absolutely shocked to see all but one item in a deplorable state -soiling on the inside of a unused Loro Piana purse -sealed company purse mirror missing-handles of the purse had oil stains from being carried -the cloth lining inside the brand new unused purse was filthy... I was furious that a store could mishandle someone's goods like this ! I noticed my new Loro Piana pashminas had their affixed sewn tags pulled off and hanging by a thread-my Loro Piana cashmere scarfs were a roughened in areas showing wear-and had green glitter and other detritus on them . A beautiful Italian -new -large patent leather tote was scuffed up with dark brown marks on all four corners and dirty smears on some areas-even a small green mark on the tote-worst of all this tote had been a soft, beautiful pink-beige color-now it's a sticky , tacky coffee colored bag... apparently patent can be damaged when cleaned the wrong way and light colors can be damaged and the leather feels sticky.One might ask how does a new tote become dirty and damaged by " sitting on a shelf"? I believe many of my items were worn , carried and used. They were returned to us in a deplorable condition-they would not look like this if on a shelf or in a case... If you care about your items don't consign unless you're able to risk getting them back in terrible condition and missing items... brings to mind another item a gently used Bottega Veneta shoulder bag-inside leather lining is torn and a grimy, greasy mirror ( not mine) was in the bag-with guess what two Bottega tags that also were not mine ... all and all Afterwards was a horribly disappointing experience! We emailed the owner with lots of photos so she would be aware of what transpired in her store . She replied that we could bring all items to her store for cleaning -As we had already experienced the Afterwards treatment we declined her offer.... read more

I've made a couple of attempts to consign with Afterwards and have never had a positive outcome. The items I offered through Afterwards were of the highest quality and condition, best European labels, and always in style. When asking for reasons as to why nothing was selling and then entered the donation cycle without going through the graduated price reduction cycle (head-scratching - hmmmm...) I was never received well or offered a reasonable explanation by the proprietor - frankly, they appear "put-out" with the inquiry. Anyway, I stopped going to, and am no longer using Afterwards. Since then I have been taking all items to the Cancer Opportunity Shop on Santa Cruz Ave. in Menlo Park and urge you to do the same. I'm not making any money but I feel far better knowing that whatever my gifted items sell for at the Opportunity Shop the money is going to a reputable cause. read more

Wish there is a kinder and less judgemental consignment store in the area. The women working at this shop seem to be quick to make assumptions about their customers, impeding positive progression of interaction. This is not a desirable customer service trait. I'm disappointed that they do not support local well-known designers in general, and the staff seems oblivious to garment craftsmanship. It's taken me a while to write this as I had to digest what transpired and write this when I was less angry. To sum up my experience (please feel free to message me for more) IF you want to take items of value to a consignment shop, check in to see how it's going and repeatedly remind them of which items you have there only to be told you definitely didn't bring "those items" into their store...then THiS is the place for you. Items which on one visit were accepted by the owner.... Then upon insisting repeatedly that you have additional items at their store that they aren't listed in their item list sent to you.....repeatedly mind you...and having Jane with her "excellent customer service skills" send you in response a list of their consignment policy rules....yes baffling I know....at this point I asked her where it mentioned items being LOST at their store and for maybe the fourth time gave her a list of what items I DID have there and that I wanted to pick up every item on x day and be done with it. Despite her insistence that three of the items were not there, they showed up (!) a miracle I know... I was able to retrieve my belongings and be done with them. I shopped here but never consigned. I called and asked what brands they take since they have high-end items on the site, but they sell all kind of stuff at the actual store. I said that I shop and consign at Fillmore, and she sounded offended, so I said that I get that they cater to a slightly different age group. Then she "corrected" me: "A wealthier age group." This is a really great store. They have really unique beautiful items. Everything in the store is in excellent condition and at very very reasonable prices. Second-hand premiere designer goods . There are some REAL gems in here. I'm actually a little hesitant to write this review because I don't want their popularity to increase, leaving less treasure for me! Funny how the same person who lectures me about spending too much money on shopping (my mother) is the same person who introduced me to Afterwards. She should've known that she was igniting a dangerous addiction... Sweaters, blouses, coats + jackets, purses, shoes, dresses, suits, jewelry, living room furniture, etc., etc.. Some of the price tags may shock you ($3k USED?!?), but there's plenty of awesome finds at bargain prices (Vintage Colors of Benetton sweater for $20? Yes please!). Even if you don't intend on making a purchase, it is fun to browse around their museum of once-loved objects of desire... but here comes the bad part: I had to knock off four stars because there is a lady who works there who is really friendly and attentive to Caucasian customers, and cold and unfriendly to those who are not. Someone really needs to do something about this racist/prejudice/rude/unattentive/snooty/bitchy employee. I just read the other reviews for Afterwards and I'm happy to confirm that I am not the only person who is singling this employee out. It really pains me to witness this sort of prejudice in this day and age, let alone the BAY AREA! It's absolutely infuriating and I had to give this terrible star rating to hopefully garner some attention from whoever is investing in this store so they could do something about it. So if you're not white, I wouldn't recommend coming in here unless you're fine with rewinding time back to the 19th century where being prejudice and racist with your customers is considered acceptable business practice. I just read Monica T's review and find myself fuming again at being similarly mistreated by one of the the mean snobby ladies who work here. I was trying on a dress - in the dressing room of course - but she lost me for a second and screamed out to her colleague - 'that little girl has run off in the dress". Afterwards has some great quirky pieces (I'm not sure where else in the Bay Area I could find a Yamamoto top), but the service is horribly snooty like other people have mentioned. Also, they don't have much of a size selection. I normally wear a size 8, and in a few trips I never found anything that fit in the whole store (everything is smaller, of course). So overall, if you like high-fashion labels, don't mind spending at least several hundred dollars on a used piece, can tolerate the service AND are a size less than 8... then you might really like Afterwards. read more

A lot of the clothes here are great and you can even find some oustanding deals, although some of the items are overpriced. The selection is pretty good and it's remarkable how much inventory the store can manage in that tiny space. I would pop in there regularly if the staff made me feel at all welcome. I've gone in a dozen times over the past several years, made plenty of purchases, and seen many interactions between customers and the staff. This was a very interesting experience. When I walked into the store, there was a young lady at the counter who I greeted upon entry and she looked directly at me and didn't say a thing. She looked at me as if I wasn't/shouldn't be there. That was strike 1. Upon walking through the store some, I noticed that there was only 1 other customer (African american woman) who was waiting to speak to someone. The manager she was waiting to speak with saw me and assumed that I was her husband (because according to her, I am tall, big and black) just like the other customer. She proceeded to ask me, did I play a sport at Stanford University. Though I don't think she meant any harm with her "offensive and ignorant" comment, it showcased a level of unprofessional-ism that appeared to be the theme of the store. For a consignment store that claims to stock only extremely upmarket designer brands, Afterwards is a bit of a let-down. Their second-hand designer selection is respectable, but when I inquired on a recent visit whether they stock any pieces by Ann Demeulemeester or Martin Margiela a sales associate responded with a resounding, "WHO?!!" The store appears to offer a decent selection of brands such as Chanel, Burberry, Carolina Herrera, etc. but I'd describe the vibe of their merchandise a bit conventional. If you're a card-carrying fashion hound looking for pieces from more avant-garde, hipster high-fashion or interesting labels this outpost is probably not your best best--but rather a second-hand retailer such as Wasteland in San Francisco. (Although you might occasionally luck out--as I recently did by snapping up a brand-new, never-worn Dries Van Noten silk skirt for under $100.) Now let's talk about customer service: I've visited the store on several occasions, and while I can't personally complain about being purposefully ignored as other reviewers have noted, I did get the vibe that the sales associates count the money in your wallet with their eyes and treat you accordingly. Example: When I paid for an item with my credit card, the lady who rang up my purchase (a dame of a certain age with a Mitteleuropean accent), instead of handing me back the card, she threw it back to me over the counter. That's right: She THREW the card back at me. I couldn't help but wonder whether that gesture was inspired by the fact that I was dressed in jeans, TOMS slip-ons and a Lululemon hoodie. On the plus side, aforementioned lady was helpful in answering my questions about the store's consignment policy, although I did chuckle a bit at her emphatic assertion that Afterwards only stocks "very upmarket things from two seasons ago AT MOST," when there are several racks in the store full of J. I usually come in dressed pretty casually, and people think I'm younger than I look. Each time I've been by the employees have all but ignored me until I directly asked them a question. In the meantime, they've chatted up a storm with older clientele who perhaps come off as more monied? Shocking -- this is Silicon Valley. Who knows, you may be talking to a 25-year-old millionaire. This shop sells designer clothes of local people who have that kind of life where it is a rather large fashion faux pas to wear the same old clothes for an event. I've purchased a few items for myself over the years such as my best coats or jackets and slacks. This place makes classic designer clothes affordable for even my budget. We have purchased most of the dresses for my teenage daughter at Afterwards. A local news personality sells her dresses here, and they fit my child well. The price is the same price as a new garment at a large department store-- if we pay extra to tailor the garment. This equates to a better quality garment for the same price as new, and she is very happy with the material and look. It's a place for folk who love clothes. For seriously good deals I recommend one of Menlo Park's fabulous resale stores, but for the upscale made affordable, this place is a well known establishment to get those designer clothes at a fraction of the cost. Be sure to understand that they specialize in designer labels and the high end. Like most consignment stores, items are marked down after some time, so there are some good buys to be had. Afterwards is a unique place to buy clothes with the ultimate goal of buying used. Most items I have purchased here stay in my wardrobe long after clothes bought at other stores. Well holy crap, it's a consignment store and I just checked it out for the hell of it with no expectations, but I found more wearable reasonably priced stuff here in half an hour than at any Macy's, Sears, Kmart, Target, etc. I mean at those places, maybe you find a new shirt with a decent pattern or color, but of course they never have your size. Fail! Here the men's shirts are all carefully organized by size on one rack so in fact, it's much more efficient (and more fun) than searching the chaotic larger floor space of big mall stores. Hubby and I discovered Afterwards while on the hunt for vintage furniture for our house. They have really great, high quality, unique stuff. We scored a funky pendant light fixture for our stairwell, but even better (believe it or not) were the men's clothes! Women's designer clothes are easy to find but designer men's clothes are not, and this place delivers! My husband found a pair of Adriano Goldschmied jeans (retail $200) for $45 and a brand new pair of Heschung boots (retail $600) for $250. So it's true that this place is not inexpensive, but the VALUE is fantastic! We will definitely be going back! read more

I went to get my heels fixed next door and the window display at Afterwards caught my eye. 20 minutes later I walked away with some beautiful Kata Space blush pink flats and a gorgeous DVF cream crochet dress! This place is a consignment shop. One emd has designer clothes for men and women. Lots of labels for about a third of the price. All items are in good condition end of good quality. This is not a thrift store. The store is well organized and is pretty. And the sales people are very helpful. The other end of the store is a furniture consignment. I was looking for a couch. They have a number of pieces both couches tables and and chairs. Some nice quality stuff amd some of it is just ok. Seems to be a little bit pricier on the consignment end of the curve. read more

I'm so sorry to hear that the other Yelpers had a less than ideal service experience. I frequent Afterwards a lot, and every time I've gone the workers have been incredibly attentive and helpful. They even enjoyed playing stylist, bringing me pieces from parts of the store that escaped my eye. I scored two designer dresses and a lace top, all for a Mr. Benjamin. They have an excellent curated clothing selection, and the store is kept very clean and organized. This store is much more upscale than some of the other resale shops in the area, namely because this one is consignment. I was able to speak with the owner and the staff, everyone was kind and helpful. I have never left a store so insulted as I did right now. I always deal with Jane but today had Mary. I brought in a Lululemon vest and told to come back in February. I brought in an army green cargo vest with fur hood by Velvet by Graham Spencer and one Hudson coated wax jeans. She told me that velvet by Graham Spencer is an inexpensive brand and they do not take in that brand....really?! Jane has ALWAYS taken in that brand and excuse me, the vest cost me 200.00?! And is one of the popular styles of the season. She said she couldn't take the Hudson jeans but then asked Jane who said sure...keep in mind they are wax coated and say on the tag that colors vary....Mary changed her mind because she saw white at the waistband and said I got deodorant on them. Really?! I always put deodorant in my pants! They were brand new with tags!! I've sold here for a few years. Love Jane and Bob but never again! I left feeling humiliated. read more

I went in to the store with my teen daughter and I found myself a Chanel coat and my daughter found a really classy dress. The price is really good. The service is excellent and we love the furniture as well. I live 2 miles away from it but I rarely go there. I will stop by more often. Dining room table, custom sofa table, countless articles of clothing, a lamp, and who knows what else. OK, my wife knows, and we both know that Afterwards is worth the 1.5 hours it takes to fly our plane down to the San Carlos or Palo Alto airport, rent a car, and go shopping. Of course we hit other stores as well, but make no mistake, this store is a staple for folks that like fine furniture and clothing at a great priced, and don't mind used stuff (I'm not a fan of the term "Previously Loved," but it's sorta' funny I guess). Unfortunately, we often end up with things that don't fit in a 4 seat airplane, which means a 4.5 hours drive the following weekend, but it's still worth it. I cannot speak to problems folks have with the staff, but one must understand that the employees LOVE the merchandise. If they don't think you'll be able to handle a Lucite table (they scratch easily), they'll steer you away from it. Clothing of a certain price requires a deft touch, especially when used, and cannot be over-worn lest it lose it's shape. Likewise, a pair of Prada shoes needs to be maintained in order to continue looking good, and no matter how much money you have, people scuff their shoes. If $250 is too pricey, it's the shoes, not the store. Of course, it doesn't hurt to ask for a better price. Sometimes they can do something, sometimes they can't, but it's always worth a try. Remember, they're trying to sell stuff for their clients, who need a way to unload all of the stuff they purchased at full (or close to it) price. I certainly wasn't dressed up the first time I went there, nor was my wife, but as long as you go there respecting the finery, not just the fact that you can get a good deal on something, you'll find a very receptive staff. One last tip: They actually have sales, and items do come down in price as well, which when combined with a 20% store sales (for instance) means you can really score. Get on the mailing list, and just like Trader Joe's, make it a first stop, and you can really make out. If not, you can go somewhere else, but you'd be remiss in not looking here first. read more

My 2 kids and my husband even helped me to carry all in ( it was that heavy ). 2. The Lady employee went through my bags and picked up several dresses and accepted them for consignment. 3. She said that she will e-mail me the itemized list with prices later, she took my name and number and said I can just go for now. 4. For 2 month I have not heard anything from them and went to the store to ask about my items. The employee checked the computer and said that she is not able to find anything exempt my old record for 2015. Yes, I did consigned before with them. She promised me that somebody will call me back when they locate my latest consignment ( 2017 ). 5. They called me back and left the message that they have NOTHING on the records ! So they misplaced/lost my items. Now I have no prove that I did bring them anything because they never send me itemized list as they promised. I've meant to write this review for awhile - this store is fantastic! I've shopped here several times, and always come away with a bagful of great finds! Sure, it's pricey - but the clothes are nearly all designer label, and in amazing condition (many still new with tags). For example, I got a gorgeous embroidered Dolce & Gabbana button down shirt, brand new with tags still on, for $150 - the original price was $925! I also got a lovely gray evening gown in perfect condition for less than $100 - can't wait to wear it to the opera :) New with tags Christian Louboutin suede & leather stiletto boots for $475, when the original price was $1,095. You really cannot go wrong in this store (though you may go into debt ;P). Also, the couple who own/run the store and the ladies who staff it are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I have seen some reviews where people are complaining that the staff were rude - not my experience at all. They all went out of their way to be helpful, give recommendations, etc. I will be back! read more

If I could give this place negative star I totally would. I've visited Afterwards probably a handful times, sometimes I buy something and sometimes I come up empty. The first time I went in I had a woman tell me that she couldn't believe I fit into a dress because the woman who brought it in for consignment is a "tiny little thing". OK - so she just pretty much called me fat. Whatever, I don't have image issues and like my weight so I just chock it up to insensitivity. The last few times I've gone in I've had no help at all. I guess they only like to help their regulars. OK whatever I get it. Well, the kicker story is this one, I went in on Saturday looking for a faux fur shrug for my strapless dress for my HS reunion in NYC. I wanted something cute but somewhat hip, so I thought to stop in try some stuff on on my way to Stanford Mall. Maybe I could find a deal at Afterwards. Oh mind you I was wearing shorts, a grey American apparel sweatshirt, and baseball cap. I get it I look kind homely and not so hot! If you have not read my other reviews then let me 'splain. I get dressed up most of the week because I work for a design agency, I like to dress down on the weekends so I don't have to think about what I am going to have to wear. So let me set the scene. Me grubby looking Asian chick. with Nordstrom's bag with dress I bought last week! Them snobby overly botoxed woman of a certain age. Me - walk in talk to gentleman, Tim, show him dress and ask for advice. Can't find exactly what I am looking for so decide to take a look at Marc Jacobs section of blouses and the look at dresses in the size 4 section (yes, I am usually a size 4). As I am looking at dresses, I hear a tall older woman whisper to the gentleman next to her that he should take the clothes from me and start a room because I have a bag in my arms and who knows what I will do. Livid does not begin to describe my anger. Talk to gentleman who comes over to me and tell him what I heard. All he can do is apologize for her and say "I don't even pay attention what she says". Hmmmmmm~ really, does she say this kinda stuff all the time? Me, walk out call husband on way to mall - NEVER VISITING AGAIN!!!! Lesson learned and tips for anyone visiting - make sure you are dressed to the nines if you plan on getting any kind of reliable service.
