While not making much of a purchase, Malika gifted me a beautiful hat for me to wear in Florida. It was a hat that I had been eyeing weeks before. She put it aside for me as a going away gift, and I was so touched. Shops like these are far and few between. I was so happy to find this place! After living in New York for three years, I finally came back to the Bay Area to visit. I find that a lot of the stores here are very expensive and generally cater to an older clientele. Gitane is great. The clothes are fun and stylish. I knew Malika when she worked at Leaf and Petal and am so excited that she has her own store. She has such an eye for fashion and is the sweetest, most helpful person. I bought a beautiful grey sweater with a really unique back, skinny jeans that actually flatter someone with a butt, and a cute motorcycle style jacket. Plus, I didn't break the bank. If nothing else, this particular Gitane store is a shining example of what a store should provide in customer service. My daughter and I were promptly greeted as we walked through the door. And, without being pushy, 2 of the young ladies working here offered their help and advice. Anything we needed was quickly found in the size and color we were looking for. When I was a little too slow in snatching an adorable top off the rack before another customer grabbed it and bought it...one of the sweet young ladies told me of another store where I could go and probably find it. THAT is great customer service. Gitane has a nice variety of clothing that includes a wall full of jeans. They also have some great accessories. My 22 year-old daughter walked out with several scarves, but informed me the clothing was more my (older) style. That's okay...I need a store I can call my own. I love absolutely everything about Gitane- the space itself, the variety and quality of the clothing they offer, their employees...everything! The way in which the space is laid out and decorated is gorgeous and so creative (jewelry in dried lentils!? Yes please!). They regularly feature work from local artists and occasionally rent out the incredible space for after-hour events. Everyone I have met on their staff is warm and welcoming and extremely knowledgeable and passionate about fashion. They truly go out of their way to help you find precisely what you're looking for (or, if you don't happen to be looking for something in particular, of guiding you to something you're guaranteed to love and look fantastic in). let me start off by saying that I generally don't like shopping in boutiques. I hate pushy, starker-y sales people and they can be snobby. First, it was one dress in the window that caught my eye, then another and a bag and shoes...it wasn't long after that I decided I HAD to go into the store and was rewarded by many other great finds that included both classic & trendy outfits along with every accessory you would need to make it into an amazing outfit. Malika has a great sense of fashion, very personable, and makes the experience so much fun you feel like you are shopping with one of your girlfriends. There is a range of prices that will allow everyone to find something they can add to their wardrobe. The window displays are attractive. Got my attention. The clothing comes in a variety of styles and prices. I have bought a number of pieces, shoes and a very pricey bag. I've never gotten one compliment and the clothing I bought did not wash well. The amount I paid did not hold up in quality. The store owners are very sweet and friendly, but I find the prices to be pricey (very fitting of a boutique in downtown Palo Alto, I guess). I was excited to come here after reading all the great reviews but I was disappointed to find no sale section. I very much prefer Ambiance in SF to Gitane in Palo Alto. LOVE LOVE LOVE my new bag that I got here. And it cost probably about 20% what most of the bags that I love cost...okay, 10%. It was $78! Crazy. It's not genuine leather, but, for today at least, I love it more than the Michael Kors that I bought the week before. The buyer here is great- tons of really cute stuff at really cute prices. I absolutely LOVE this store. The owner is the same as the Fresa store that use to be in Palo Alto way down on El Camino. T&C is a much better location for her store and her clothes are still the best and very reasonably priced. Besides the great clothes the help they provide is great. You will not walk out of that store without an outfit that doesn't look just absolutely fabulous on you. The owner won't let you! :-) She will help you find the perfect whatever it is you are looking for and give you her honest opinion.
