It is unique not only in the A+ care that all residents receive, but the Little Sisters of the Poor truly live their mission, "to care for the Elderly Poor" with Love, Joy and Respect. Every resident I have come to know absolutely Loves living at the Residence. Their lives are filled with joy which is clearly evident whenever you visit. As one resident says, "St. Joseph's Residence is like living on the Good Ship Lollipop, without ever leaving port". As a result, our family members live longer, happier lives. That is a testament to the Care they receive and the sense of belonging - a sense of Family and being in their own home. I highly recommend St. Josephs Residence for the Elderly Poor. A facility that consistently, year after year, receives a 5-star rating from the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health and Nursing Home Oversight.

Once I filled out paperwork, I was immediately brought into the emergency area, where I met the nurses, and soon after that the P.A. on call that evening, all of whom were referred to on a first-name basis (who does that in a hospital emergency room?). Let me just say it was a bit surreal - but in the best way possible - that I immediately felt at home, and at ease, even though I was going through an episode. I still get choked up thinking about the amazing, caring experience I had there. When I left, I literally gave hugs to the two nurses and P.A. that tended to me (Molly, Chris and Josh - you all freakin' rock, man), and I felt like I had made friends for life in a little over 3 hours (and next time I'm up your way I'm gonna take you all out to dinner to show my gratitude!) After getting through all of this, it gives me hope that there are still good, kind, caring people out there in this world, and that healthcare *can* be a good experience when people love their jobs and where they work. I was seen 5 years ago but suddenly I'm not a patient anymore…read more Despite the ER (both the head and Tim Schaefer) misreading my mom's x-ray when she broke her back (said it wasn't broken), it's convenient, so tried to make an appt. Tracy at the operators' desk wouldn't make me an appt and had that worst bedside manner. She wouldn't even let me talk to my former doctor's office! I asked to speak with her collègue instead as I found her extremely unprofessional. So unprofessional in fact-- she hung up on me! Rude! This hospital panders for handouts and donations from the community. We have donated to the Hospital Fair Day most years - I've been a patient for 38 years but suddenly I'm not a patient anymore-- guess I won't be donating anymore either ‍

We recently visited a relative receiving palliative hospice care there (they have many levels of…read moreservice, btw). We did not tour the building, but what we saw of the facility and staff was reassuring. Protocols were clear; PPEs were provided and hand sanitizer was just steps away from every location. The rooms were bright and cheerful and the all areas that we saw were tidy and smelled clean. Our relative's room and bed were fresh looking and it appeared that good care was being taken.

The folks who provide support and assistance were amazing, especially Filomena Lawless and Steve Murphy. Filomena offers such kindness to both residents and their families, and for that I am forever grateful. Steve was a text away, offering quick responses and helping us find who best to speak to in a few cases. The care staff in Assisted Living were incredibly helpful, especially Darlene and Mom's favorite caregiver, Bob, and kept a close eye on Mom's health, even picking up on health issues she hid from us. Mom made a wonderful friend and cribbage companion during her time there, a late in life relationship whose loss was particularly difficult for her. When she had problems with her room, both in independent and assisted living, the staff responded quickly and they were easy to interact with and very friendly. Joe, the man who provides transport, was always ready with a friendly joke and appropriate teasing and always brought a smile to Mom's face. He also brought her several cards after she was out of the buidling for a health issue. The front desk staff were helpful. So why only three stars? Mom was never very happy about the overall food quality on a day to day basis. Given the rental cost and the fact that that cost increased every year, we would have been happy to pay the increase if there were tangible improvements. During the time she lived there, whenever I would talk to local folks about Brookdale, especially people who had family there, the food quality seemed to be a common theme. The biggest complaint I have came at the end of her stay. At that point, you know that despite the friendliness and care of so many people, ultimately this is a business designed to make money and answer to a board of directors. Mom had to enter a hospital and then a rehab facility and we were hopeful for a time she would be able to return to her apartment. Once it was clear we needed to vacate her apartment, we began the process of recovering rent and assisted living care costs that had been automatically withdrawn from her checking account, per Brookdale's policy. At that point, she was in a rehab facility that was no longer covered by insurance, so she was in need of those funds, amounting to thousands of dollars. Each time we attempted to get an answer about the timeline, we received a different answer about how the process worked and when we would receive her refund. When we tried face to face meetings to that end, the director became testy. It took a full two months after she was completely moved out of Brookdale to finally have the funds in our hands. Bottom line: there are a lot of positive things about this facility, but beware it is a corporation - slow to change and respond.

We moved her there three years ago when she was 89. It changed her entire outlook on life and put a smile back on her face. She has loved every minute of it. The staff is friendly and caring, the food is great, the facility is clean and environs lovely. My mom loves it there. We are so very grateful. I could not recommend it higher.
