I keep looking at this great piece of Milwaukee architecture that looks like early 1900s while shopping at the awesome Italian market across from it so I'm finally going to check it out. The building is absolutely gorgeous on the corner. I obviously stopped in as they opened because the sign was not lit when I started shopping across the street but it was on when I was done so the place was empty. The inside was a hodgepodge of old/new/in between, kind of all over the place compared to the outside. The bartender was friendly enough but didn't engage outside my drink transaction as with the second person who walked in. I ordered the spicy Bloody Mary which came with a domestic light beer chaser which looked super average. The beer was warm sadly, I don't drink beer often but when I do I like a nice crisp/cold beer. The Bloody Mary was super average with a sweet pickle and two olives and like always not very spicy at all with no celery salt which is a staple in my experience. read more

This MKE dive bar makes me smile! What a great little spot (conveniently located on Brady Street). I mean where can you go wrong with the cheapest of drinks, and the friendliest of staff. Oh, and dogs! I know not everyone is a fan of pups inside working establishments such as this one, but hey, they don't serve food here, so what's the harm. My fam was in town over the holiday and we were up for a little bit of day drinking on the sunny afternoon that it was. Along with the family, came their dogs, so this near by spot was a no brainer. I can't not love this place. Maybe I've just been on a dive-bar kick. Dives offer a variety in conversation that you can't really find anywhere else. Call it a search for authenticity, or maybe just quarters. Regano's is cash only (though there's an ATM) and if I drink strategically I can maximize quarter collection while just hanging out on a Sunday. When I say "dive" I mean it affectionately, and I'm generally referring to a place that isn't fancy and usually doesn't serve food. It wasn't until recently that I understood that bars in Milwaukee (possibly a Wisconsin thing, but I'mnotfromhereyaknow) can have either dogs or full kitchens but not both. There are plenty of restaurants around, it's Brady St. So it's nice to have a place that's dog friendly. I've seen some interesting dog confrontations. But also some laid-back dogs. Possibly sleeping. So I'm using "dive" to describe this place in definitely the most non-perjorative sense, but there is something decidedly old-school about Regano's. It's not just the old photos on the walls or the worn-in floorboards or the fact that some of the regulars have clearly been coming in for decades, it's something about the atmosphere. It's different from the rest of trend-sensitive Brady St. I like that it's here. And if you're hungry you don't have to walk very far. Or they'll let you bring food in. read more

Roman Coin is a fun place with great bartenders, very friendly patrons, reasonably priced drinks, and a laid back atmosphere that is always welcoming. They have some snacks on weekend but you can easily get something from the many eateries around and with Glorioso's across the street you can't go wrong. I stop over while in Milwaukee and it is my local, Milwaukee waterhole. Have fun smashing in the Kiss or Simpsons pinball machines. They are pet friendly some bring in your doggies. read more

This is a great place to meet friends and have a good drink. Bring cash because it's cash only but the drinks are pretty cheap which is always a good thing. When I went with my friends they had a couple dogs in there which I just love love love! They have a pool table if that's your thing. It's not a real big place so it's not real noisy so it is great for socializing and good conversation. read more

The Roman Coin is the real deal, folks. This Brady Street dive extraordinaire has been around for what seems like forever, but in the last few years, this spot has really come into its own vis a vis craft beer selections and an appeal to a more diverse crowd. Back in the day I remember Roman Coin being the requisite "old dudes drinking at 6am" spot on Brady, but these days, it's all ages cool and accessible dive-style, more open and inclusive, seemingly. (I attribute this to them becoming a bit more marketing savvy in the past few years. Way to go, Roman Coin!) You'll find lots of craft suds in bottles and on tap, normal bar-type offerings in the way of boozes, Big Buck Hunter, pinball, a pool table, an internet jukebox... you get it, right? I've heard the men's bathroom is super grody. The women's is pretty gnarly, so I can only imagine... The Roman Coin is an icon in my mind now. It's so casual that its almost not realistic. There is one real great time to go to Roman Coin... you are with a group of great friends and want to kick it. You roll into the Roman Coin (perhaps in sweatpants), play some pool, rock the jukebox and drink a surprisingly deep selection of beer. This is one of those bars that take a few visits to win you over. Once it does... two thumbs up. However, I'd like to note that your experience can be very dictated by your bartender. Brady St. isn't quite what it used to be. It's more hip, it's busier and I don't spend nearly as much time there as I once did. The Nomad and High Hat remain very good choices but they alone cannot compel me to fight narrow streets and horrible parking. But the Coin, now we're talking. It sits a little further on down the road from the hub of Brady St traffic so you can usually find a parking spot close by. It's not as divey as some of the others bars in the area. In fact, it's the closest thing to 'Townie" you'll get from a bar physically on Brady St. The customers are typically of the late 20s to 30-Something crowd. The atmosphere is friendly, there are no cliques here. Dogs are welcomed inside which definitely adds to the over all comfortable feeling you get. The staff is attentive and open for a chat when they aren't pouring. It's well lit and clean There a pool table and a pinball machine in the back that don't see much use. There's a jukebox but I can't say what sort of music is on there, it seems to get less use than the pool table. A lot of reggae get's played; good reggae. At least on the nights I've spent there recently. Cash only bar here but there's an ATM inside. Frankly, I've grown to prefer cash only bars; it seems to help folks keep account of themselves (as in: sober). As far as drinks go; they have decent selection of bottled/canned beers and the taps range from Blatz to Lakefront. There are a few snacks available but I can't say I've been there while hungry. Wednesday is Trivia starting at 9pm. You play per round so you can play for one and still be a winner. I like this better than having to stay for 4 rounds of trivia (and 8 rounds of drinks) just to see if you've won a free drink. read more

I walked in with two friends. As soon as we walked in we got rude stares from the bartender and the regulars sitting at the bar and they wouldn't take their eyes off us for some reason. We were looking at their blackboard for specials trying to decide what we wanted and the bartender said "what can I get you" and stood there uncomfortably staring even after we told her we needed a minute. After we got our drinks (not the friendliest service), we decided to sit down somewhere in the middle of the place. There was a large dog sitting nearby, which was pretty odd and seemed unsanitary. It was clearly a regular because there was a bowl of food and water set out for it. The worst part is that a few minutes later, the dog PISSED on the floor and the group of people sitting around it acted like it was no big deal. They grabbed some napkins and started sopping it up. Didn't really clean it thoroughly and the entire bar REEKED of piss. We didn't want to stay for another minute after that so we quickly finished our beers and left through the back door. I understand dive bars aren't going to be the most charming, but the place was dirty and unfriendly and the pissing dog was the last straw. Never going back. read more

A dive bar in the sense that you wouldn't adhere to the 10 second rule if you dropped a peanut, at least 50% of the patrons were decently buzzed at 9pm, there was someone bellied up to the bar in their pajamas, and, at one point, 3 dogs were roaming around inside. Not divey enough to where I would, say, refuse to use the faulty-lock bathroom, however. (Read: The shitter was clean, ladies.) Decent beer selection. Mystery brown bag shots. (Always a plus.) At first I thought, a cash only bar who goes to those? I soon found out, I go to bars like that. Roman Coin is a great find on Brady. They have a great beer selection and a good price. But the real reason I go is not because of the people or the beer, it is for the canine companions. The first time I walked in I saw a dog perched up in a chair at the bar. I did a double take. At first I thought it was small man with frizzy hair but then noticed, it was a poodle. Just like Norm from Cheers, he was keeping his stool warm, enjoying the company of his fellow bar-mates. Most of the dogs seem to be regulars and like Norm they mind their manners very well. Getting back to my first comment, the nature of an all cash bar has a great ability to keep out, how shall I say this, all the hooligans/drunkies/college kids. I've tried to understand the appeal of the Roman Coin. I get that it's a no-frills dive bar on a street of "get all gussied up and dance to Drake" establishments, but this place is not for me. Rarely do I go somewhere once and then write a review, but I'm confident I will not return. There was a horrible smell. It was legitimately what my middle school locker room smelled like. Old gym clothes that haven't been washed in a while and are balled up in a locker. I don't know if it was one (or more) of the patrons or if its just the way the building smells, but there's no way I can come back. I was overdressed for this place and got strange looks. There isn't a certain "type" of person who goes to this bar, from what I can tell. Weird old guys with gold chains, college kids in ironic trendy clothing, cougars--the whole deal. I like that, but wish they would have treated me differently. They serve drinks in little plastic cups. There's no way those hold the amount that bars typically serve. And it's cash only as every single review has already stated. tl;dr I wish I could have enjoyed Roman Coin more but a mystery smell made me moody. read more

The Roman Coin is my new favorite bar on Brady Street. That's how great it is. I've been living on Prospect Avenue (right between Prospect and North Ave) for the past 6 years so I've been to them all but nothing beats the Roman Coin. It's basically a nice local brady street bar without the craziness of the garage/nomad/jocats crowd. Age ranges from students to older crowds. And the best part is they allow dogs! They have a great selection of beer (and yes I am a beer aficionado) and Pepper, the bar booze hound (no really, Pepper is a long-haired dachshund that roams the bar) is sure to greet you as you walk in. The owners are very nice and personable and are sure to tell you about the history of the bar, just ask! Prices are very affordable. Although cash only, there is an ATM machine readily available for all your beer investment needs. Great beer at a great bar on Brady Street...it doesn't get better than that! read more

Friends and I enjoyed making up lines to the biker fight that was unfolding on the other side of the glass outside. Much fun. Then the owner came in and made us move off the trap door. What?!! Affordable drinks, generous pours, and friendly service. This is a neighborhood bar feel with a more open atmosphere. They even allow you to have food delivered here! We stopped by while waiting for our table at Thai-Namite. When our table was called, the bartender put our drinks in plastic cups so we could take them over. They have several dogs in this bar. I love the Roman Coin. Like many other reviewers, I thought this was a laundromat until we moved just down the street. We soon discovered what a gem it is. They have a great selection of beer and drinks, and the bartenders are always friendly. Undoubtedly, the best thing for us is the patio area-- we can bring our dog here. There are typically at least a few other dogs there too so they can socialize. The owners are always friendly too. I don't typically talk to strangers at bars, but there's something about this dive bar that brings people together. I recommend you check it out, and bring your dog :) read more
