This review is about REI on-line. I received several items I ordered as gifts today. The shipping/packaging was abysmal. The tee shirts were not in any wrapping, not folded but simply thrown into a box unprotected. The same was true of the belt I ordered. I called customer service to express my concern. Brian was sorry and hoped I have a great day. Beware: do not order anything breakable and hope that the sun is shining when your shipment arrives. Working on Christmas gifts in early December, I ordered, online, a bunch of nice socks for stocking stuffers. The socks are great and they were delivered, free, very fast. I thought everything was great until I used my IPad about a week later. EVERYTHING I look at has an advertisement for the very socks I bought and it's an REI ad. So, needless to say, my family, who also uses my IPad, knows enough to know that I have ordered these socks for them. They probably deserve three stars but I'm ticked that they stopped their satisfaction guarantee but still advertise it. (You have to dig to find the fine print.) The good. Great selection, except for cycling gear. If you're camping they likely have it. The bad. Service is hit and miss. I've had both good and bad, and it's luck of the draw. When I tried to return something that failed (and I later found out, still covered under warranty) they were no help. Nice, but basically you're on your own. I can get better service and lower prices elsewhere (the dividend is nice but why pay more in the first place?!) After 20 years of shopping there I'm out. read more

After a mixup on where my new bike was delivered and battling traffic against the I-85 bridge collapse, I came to the Atlanta REI and was immediately greeted and asked how I could be helped by the bike shop manager, Cliff. He put a rush on my order assembly and made sure REI significantly lowers your stress when you walk through the door. I can't thank him enough for the way he turned my day around. On October 2nd, I realized I needed rain pants to go to a football game and went to the REI in Atlanta to get some. Apparently, a lot of other people had been there that day, and their selection was low. I found one pair that I thought would work (but wasn't my size), but Brandon (associate) told me that he would look in the back for me to see if there were anymore. He finally came down with one pair that was just my size, and his customer service and attitude just made a dreary day and a terrible loss in the rain (the next day) that much more tolerable. We brought in an older bike this past weekend that we had gotten from an older gentleman that no longer rides any more. The tire was flat and we needed it looked at. All of the people that work in the bike section were so friendly and helpful. We found out this was a classic bike and they not only helped us by getting the tire changed, but also advised us on the best bike pumps. Excellent place to go if you need help with bikes! This used to be my favorite clothing and adventure store. That was until their amazing return policy was changed earlier this year. I agree that some people were probably taking advantage of the 100% guarantee policy by returning items that are far past their useful life. However, creating a hard rule of 1 year or less is exactly the sort of corporate BS that REI should oppose. As a company, REI should empower their competent employees to make a judgement call when a product fails prior to its useful life instead of hiding behind a rule made 1000 of miles away. I am a long time customer of R.E.I. Not anymore. I ordered Kuhl Khaki Rydr pants. They sent me Kuhl Gunmetal pants. No problem. Everybody makes mistakes. But, I own the gunmetal pants. And the "Khaki" pants they sent me were the same color as the gunmetal. So, I took them back. Here's where it gets interesting. They emailed me this; Hello, Thank you for your contacting us regarding the Kuhl Rydr Pants. We inspected the Khaki color and only found the same darker version you received. We have requested our photo be updated to better represent the actual color. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. A friend recommend this location for mountain bike service. The master tech is knowledgeable and friendly. I left my bike for here a week to have some basic work done and to have it run through for any issues. Everything seemed in good order after I picked it up and ran it through its paces. On my first official ride after service the rear shifter cable snapped midway through my ride - stone, cold bummer. Ran the rest of the way on 3 gears - not fun. Since returning to this location would take to much time I decided to take it somewhere else to fix the issues REI missed. Generally a good shop for basic repairs. Knowledgeable staff. Too busy to give each bike the time required to complete quality, timely repairs. read more

I usually love REI but do not live close to any locations so I order online quite a bit and return to the store when I get a chance. After our mission trip to Nepal, I still had some items to return. When I tried to return the items, I got a lot of attitude from one of the return agents (I believe his name was Mike - older, white male) who gave me a condescending tone and told me that I was returning too much stuff. Apparently, they do really have a 100% satisfaction policy because the stuff I returned was not even used and I got crap for it. Thanks a lot REI. You have lost yourself a customer. read more

A few months ago I started dating a camping enthusiast, and as a result became one myself. Before camping to me was just a sleeping bag and a tent, boy was I wrong. Camping costs money--and there's no place better to shed your hard earned dollars than at REI. I came there as a camping novice and left equipped to take on mother nature. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable--it helps that each department is staffed by someone who indulges in that particular hobby. Not so with Dick's Sporting Goods. Good luck asking someone in their camping department the pros and cons of kerosene lamps versus electric. REI has a bad reputation for having high prices, yes this is true. Find what you can first on craigslist.com or at a used sporting goods store like Play it Again Sports. If you can't find it there, then wait for a sale at REI--they came often and the discounts are worth the drive. ALSO don't be afraid to buy REI's brand--I bought a 10 degree sleeping bag there for $120, not bad compared to the $280-$380 sticker for the other guys like NorthFace. It worked perfectly when I went camping last weekend in the mountains. REI is a fun place to shop and also get tips from avid campers. read more

I needed waterproof hiking shoes and had researched enough to be dangerous. Years ago, hiking shoes were heavy, cumbersome, ugly and mostly hurt my ankles. Hence, I never owned a pair. I hiked with tennis shoes. But, I hike a lot with my dogs these days and we love it. I thought it was time to treat my feet. I looked around the internet and it was overwhelming. There are many brands, opinions and types of feet. I decided to go to REI. I knew enough to get me started. A sales person was busy with someone else, but when he ran by he said he would be with me in a minute. Nice to be acknowledged. When he came back I was holding a pile of colorful semi-clunky shoes; he asked about my feet and what I needed. Hmm?? I know my feet well & told him all of their idiosyncrasies and added I needed waterproof. He immediately mentioned a brand of shoe which he was wearing. Of course, that brand was not in my pile. I have high arches + bunions; the brand was OBOZ. He also said 3 of the 4 shoes I was holding needed to go back on the shelf since they were not WP. A few minutes later he brought out 4 boxes and disappeared into the back room to grab more. I first tried on his suggestion & they were like butta. He came back with 3 more pair & told me to get on this setup, which was a steep pile of fake rocks w/a handrail. This was to test out the shoes in a semi-real life scenario. It was a very helpful setup to feel around for tightness or looseness and overall fit of the shoe. I tried on all of the other shoes & the OBOZ was the winner. Mike was incredibly knowledgeable, patient & thorough; he went over why these particular shoes were a class act. I was sold 1000%. I went out yesterday to Treetop Quest & the shoes were fantastic. I loved them and love the color too. I wear a 9.5 and I do not like to look down and feel like bozo the clown. I didn't. Mike was a top notch sales person and you could tell he loves it! REI is on the higher end, but you get superior service and that is worth every penny! read more

Over the last year and a half I've spent a fair amount of time here trying to get a fit on hiking shoes. I was told that there was a person in the shoe department that was a shoe wizzard was THE guy to hook me up with a proper fit on a hiking shoe. After spending about an hour trying shoes and doing exercises in the shoes we decided on a $100 ish pair of shoes. I wore these on a couple of trips out west and to Scotland and they where sliding all over my feet. After some near sprain and twists I returned to the salesman who convinced me that my feet where a har fit and I would need some special fitted inserts ($40) to rectify the situation. I'm here to get the perfect fit from the expert so I'm all in and he fitted the inserts for my feet and we put them in the shoe. I went on another trip to Costa Rica and the twisting and pain of these shoes continued. They would just slide around on my foot. I brought the shoes back to the store and they took the shoes back for refund against the purchase of another shoe which they thought would work better but did not have them in store so I drove out to the Perimeter area store and picked up the new shoes. These I'm told have special high tech laces that are indestructible and easy to cinch tie. I tried them on and thank jesus I feel it right away. These shoes fit great. Off I go to Peru with my new shoes but right away I feel the right foot is not staying tied. These new super laces are not holding. For my entire trip to peru I'm fighting this lace on my right shoe, left is perfect but right shoe is about to fall off after 15 min of walking after each cinch. I go to multiple stores in Aripiqua and Cusco but no shoe store sells laces of any kind (unbelievable I know) and the trendy outfitters only sell overpriced clothing and shoes but no accessories. I would have spent $300 on some shoes there but they could not fit me. I suffered the Inca trail, Colca Canyon and other hikes with my friends and the topic of the f****** REI Shoe was always a part of the conversation. I even ordered a pair of close-out Chaco Hikers from Sierra Trading while in Peru, $160 shoes on sale for $50 as I had another trip coming as soon as I returned and could not take the chance that REI could solve this problem in the given time plus I was so mad at them I didn't want to even go in the store for fear what I might say. BTW the $50 mail order shoes fit perfectly and I had a great trip to Asheville hiking in these new shoes for the weekend. When I finally calmed down enough to return to REI and explain the problem I was cheerfully greeted by a young man in the shoe department. I explained the years events of several visits to REI for shoes that would never work for one reason or another. He asked me why I didn't just cut the lace the high tech lace and tie it like a regular lace. I had considered this as well half way up a mountain in Peru but decided that this small very slick material of the lace was not designed to work this way and if I cut it and it did not work I'd be in even worse shape that I presently was with the slippage problem. At the time I devised a way to keep it tight for a while and it would slowly loosen and I'd have to do it again every 15-30 min. In any case I explained to the sales guy that I had paid for special shoes with special laces that where defective and this type of work around was not an acceptable solution. I then suggested that REI simply repair the problem. He then suggested I purchase a $12 replacement set of laces and started to jabber about this and that I should have done at which point I politely said I'd like to speak to a manager. The manager understood the problem after I explained it and calmed me. He understood that something needed to be done and when it was all over he took care of it. My complaint is not with the manager. He did a great job. The reason i'm leaving a 2 star rating is this review today is this. We have many retail options in the USA today. I want to buy and even pay more to support my local retailer and have real people advise me on what to buy but the retailer must offer a better experience in the way of personal service. If someone comes to the store with a problem purchase that extra step must kick in and the people in the store need to be in step with this. I'll give REI another chance but this experience taught me a valuable lesson. I can save allot of money and get the same products delivered to my door and I don't have to put up with the untrained sales person in the process. If my mail order purchase is not to my liking the seller pays return postage and refunds me immediately. Hard to beat. Local retail beware. read more

Shopping at REI today has been the most unpleasant experience I have ever encountered. My boyfriend & I were shopping around for an ENO, and every 5 minutes we had this guy named Ben come up to us and pressure us into buying things that we clearly did not want at the time (DEET). He made us feel very uncomfortable & would NOT stop bothering us. We decided to buy an ENO and the cashier named Will kept pressuring us once again into purchasing a membership. I said no once. And he KEPT telling me I will save $7.00. Respect my decision & leave it alone. He was not happy I did not purchase a membership & he just handed me my hammock. I asked him to put it in the bag & he just threw it in. I got to my car & thought why in the hell am i purchasing something from this store. I returned the hammock! & will be going elsewhere. I am embarrassed for that store & their behavior. Grown men acting like children. Do not shop there if you do not have a membership. They will treat you like crap. I have been at REI for about 2 hours now with my husband who is buying hiking boots & a backpack. There is a big sale going on so it is really crowded but we have found excellent sales help in every area we've gone to with no pressure to hurry us up to go on to the next customer. Just started getting really active (about time!) into cycling and hiking and running. REI has the equipment, clothes and the expertise of their staff for all of it. Prices seem a little high on some things, but pretty equal to what you'd find in any specialty store for running or cycling I've found. And they stand behind it with returns up to a year! I've had to return things and it was no hassle. They offer classes for different sports and events (went on a cycling event recently...Bike and Brew Tour which I highly recommend) with experienced and friendly instructors. Every experience so far at the NE Expressway location has been great! read more

Service can be a bit slow on the floor at times, but they generally have what I'm looking for hiking/camping/biking etc. I go elsewhere for running and fishing supplies (they have none of the latter), but REI is one of my favorite shops in town. read more
