The staff at this REI are so incredibly attentive, knowledgable, and helpful! I have come in for a variety of different needs over the years and I have always received incredible advice and information from the staff. As a company, I have enjoyed REI's sustainability and environmental advocacy and dedication. I would recommend doing the lifetime membership. It's only $30 and iirc you get a $30 voucher after joining. This gets you future discounts but most importantly, access to the physical and online re-selling platform through REI. This is a great way to sustainably buy and sell items through a reputable source. I often use this resource and have been really grateful that it exists. read more

I have visited REI a number of times for biking-related purchases and questions. Every time I have been in, I've been greeted by Paul behind the bike counter. Paul is PHENOMENAL. He has so much knowledge and is happy to share it. He has also helped steer me in the right direction (namely, cost-saving direction!) on a number of topics. I truly cannot give him enough praise! If not for him, I probably would have gone to another shop after my initial visit (I had only been inquiring about what to look for in a bike). Seriously, this guy knows his stuff! Grand Opening 5/17 - 5/19! First 250 customers get a free Nalgene water bottle (REI Co-OP Grand Rapids limited edition) and giftcards of $10, $50, or $100 Located in the famous 28th stretch of area with the mall, Trader Joe's etc. , my friends and I swung by around 10:30AM Friday 5/17 but we were ultimately too late for any kind of free swag. The line was super long and we popped in for 5 minutes before bouncing. Determined to come back for the free swag, my friend and I returned Sunday 7:30AM and waited in the rain for 2 hours before the weather brightened up. It was well-worth it as we got our water bottles and giftcards of $10. I ended up buying another Nalgene REI water bottle for a friend. There was a massive Memorial Day sale going on and many things were 20% - 50% off. I was super tempted to buy a backpack or more bottles, but do I reallly need it? Naw. Staff is super nice and even rung cowbells when we walked in during the Grand Opening haha What was disappointing are the size of the store and the rock climbing selection. The store seems a lot smaller than its sister stores (like in California). For the West Michigan REI Co-Op, REI should've went bigger to accommodate for the huge customer base here. Moosejaw does not compare and Patagonia isn't even around. Definitely sad about the rock climbing area. It was about 3 small displays of limited shoes, ropes, and gear :/ Some REI's have rock climbing walls, what happened?? I won't be buying my climbing stuff here, there's nothing to buy unfortunately :( Overall, I'll be back if I am in the area and if there's going to be a Garage Sale. Last weekend my family and I was in town on a vacation. My oldest son was excited to visit REI for the first time because he wanted to look at a knife. We visited the store and were checking everything out. Having a great experience. My 19 year old son asked a sales associate to see a knife in the display case. The worker asked if he was 18 and he said yes. The worker's response was "Well you don't look 18." And walked away. We immediately left. As a long time customer, this disrespect and arrogance is totally uncalled for and will end my future patronage. read more

I was recently in the market for a new bike rack so I called REI. The model that I was looking for was a two bike Thule platform style bike rack. I spoke with the sales rep named Laura and she encouraged me to come in to see about the product as it did not appear that they had one in stock. Two hours later she called back to inform me that she had found one that was available through the REI garage sale. I really appreciated the follow up service that she provided. All of my experiences at the REI Grand Rapids have been incredibly positive. My most recent experience added to that list of positives. Highly recommend. read more

Love the store, I'll be back when employees aren't harassing people about how they wear masks. You have more employee cars in the parking lot than customers and yet your willing to lose customers for no good reason. read more

Really a helpful crew that fitted me for summer shoes and took the time to insure that my narrow foot was fitted. My only complaint is that since they didn't have my size and because I live an hour away, I had to play 6 dollars for sending the item to my home. Many retailers offer free shipping when they are out of an item or a customer lives out of drive range. read more

Torn on 4 vs 5 stars. This store is small hence the conflict. I have always been a fan of REI. I've been frequenting the East Michigan locations for the past 15+ years as a former Suburban Detroiter so I'm used to the larger stores and selections. One glaring omission is lack of kids selection...as in ABSOLUTE ZERO. Staff told me this is one of the smallest REI stores in the chain and that kids selection was purposely left out because of the size of the store. Obviously, you can still order kids stuff online and have it shipped free to the store but my beef is that I need my kids to try the sizes before we buy. I guess I will just have to order 3 sizes for my kids, try it on right there and return what doesn't fit. I'd say the rest of the gear selection is slightly lacking as well but still adequate. It seems silly to build a store so small in this market especially with no other major presence. The staff is friendly and helpful so they get 5/5 there. read more
