Sooo disappointed. I really wanted to like this place. I live in MA and I called to order a special cake for my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary that was taking place at my uncle's house in Saco. I called well in advance just to make sure they could make a beautiful cake to commemorate such a day. Didn't happen. I called and asked them to email or fax me a list of the cake/filling flavors they had, which they said they couldn't do. They told me that I could check out the entire menu on their facebok page, but it wasn't there. I had them read off the cake flavors to me, and I settled on a champagne cake with strawberry filling. I asked them if they could do a real strawberry filling to which I was more than willing to pay extra, but after checking with the head baker, they said they could only do that if I brought in the strawberries. Obviously that couldn't happen since I live in MA, and what store owner wouldn't go the extra mile for a customer if they were more than willing to pay more for it? As for decorations, I specifically told the girl I spoke to that my grandparents were not "old, fogie, doilly-typeS" - these are people that are in their early 70's that travel all over the world and are still as active as they were when they were 20. I gave no specific directions as to the decorations, as long as it was "sophisticated, elegant, and classy". Let me tell you what I got the day I picked it up. The cake was as dry as dust, the strawberry preserve filling was laced with enough gelatin to make the insides weep into a strange gelatinous-form, the frosting tasted like supermarket-cake-area-best cream out-of-the-jar horrible-ness, and the decorations - it looked like a 5 year olds birthday cake!!! It would have fit in at maybe a baby shower or a little girls birthday party: people made fun of the cake all day. What about pastel colored stripes with little whirly-gigs on top says "elegant, sophisticated, and classy"?!?! It looked like a circus tent! The 5 year old kids in the house didnt even it it, nevermind the adults. The cake was terrible, they wouldn't go the extra mile even for more money, and the decorations were a joke - maybe the pastries are good here, but don't ever commission a cake thru them if you want to keep your dignity at whatever function you are throwing. read more

I took a short drive to Reilly's Bakery. This is a family owned and operated bakery that has been in business for over a hundred years and four generations,they must be doing something right. As this was my first visit, and was a bit unsure as to where they were I used Google GPS. I arrived at approx 10:30 which is about 2 hrs before they close, therefore some of the donuts were sold out. The store front is rather plain looking with only a big Reilly's Sign above the entrance way. No flashy signs or the like. It's a quaint and welcoming bakery although the lighting inside and in the display cases could use improving. There is a small seating area for you enjoy your treats. Customer service was excellent, attentive and prompt. The establishment was clean and smelled,well, like a bakery. They make their own fresh pastries and other goodies right in the back. You can see part of the room. This Red Velvet (cake)doughnut was dense,moist and had a slight crispiness on the outside. Topped with a cream cheese flavored buttercream this donut was a home run in my book. The flavor is what you'd expect from a red velvet cake. I'll be making another visit real soon. read more

This seems to be the only bakery in Maine that slathers the old school sugary-style icing on their cakes, as opposed to the ubiquitous buttercream icing that rules the region (and of which I'm not a fan). My wife gets me a yellow cake with chocolate icing for my birthday every year since moving here, and I begin anticipating it every spring - weeks before my birthday. Everything about this bakery screams old school. The breads and pastries are quite good; the danish are plump and fruit-filled, and the donuts are tasty, particularly the cake donuts with generous chocolate icing. These aren't chocolate frosted donuts; these have a half-inch of thick icing on top. I will add that I am not a fan of their cream-filled donuts (including the popular maple cream)...to me, they just taste oily - like eating spoonfuls of Crisco right out of the tub. But that's OK...I'd be 400 pounds if I liked everything they made. read more

They always get the cake doughnuts with the rich chocolate frosting on top and the honey-dips! They are SOOOO good! Every time I go to Maine, my diet is ruined. Reilly's is an institution. If you are a local you have probably been here or eaten one of their cakes at someones birthday party. It is a local establishment, everything is made in-house and they have very limited quantities. The selection is small as well. They have decent donuts, I am not a huge donut lover. They are better then Dunkin Donuts I can tell you that much. The issue I have with Reilly's is their cakes. Every year for my birthday I got a Reilly's cake. I loved it. I got to pick out what color flowers I wanted and have fond memories of the bakery. However, I have moved from southern Maine, explored the world and well sadly have found much better cakes. Every time I have a piece of Reilly's cake it is nostalgic but also tastes dry with heavy crisco frosting. With that being said and much to my mother's dismay, even though I will be married in Maine, Reilly's will not be making my cake. read more

Nice old school bakery. Friendly staff, lots of pastry and donut options, and they offer samples while you're browsing! I sampled the maple frosted donut with crumbles bacon on top - SO GOOD! A LIFETIME favorite. Every birthday [I'm almost 30] I request that my cake come from here... Frosting is full of sugar, but you've got to splurge at least once a year right? The inside is never dry and the presentation is always perfect. My family is a huge fan of the chocolate frosted donuts.. they've become a staple to almost any holiday to have them for breakfast, or for any reason really... just whomever is coming up for the weekend, we make sure they get to experience the amazingness these are. I've graduated in my ways from eating just the frosting to enjoying the entire donut... clearly I had been missing out during the frosting only days! ALSO, another favorite is the butter cookies. I went to school in NJ and then lived in Boston for 6 years and now live in RI and have yet to find cookies tasting as good as these [even better than Mike's Pastry in Boston] and anytime my parents come to visit, I always get a treat of a bag full of these. My Dad grew up in Biddeford, and what we call "Napoleons" at Reilly's (I think they call them Neopolitans?) - layers of puff pastry with raspberry filling and a chocolate ganache/walnut top - all I can say is that these are the stuff of family legend. Funny thing is that I actually don't eat them, since I didn't inherit the French-Canadian sweets gene (considered a genetic disorder in my family!). However, whenever a Huot family member is in Maine, they have to stop at Reilly's and pick up Napoleons. I have actually Fedex-ed these things to my aunt in Connecticut. She recently bemoaned that one of her Connecticut cousins hadn't brought home Reilly's for her, so on my last trip, I mailed some to her. I think they won't be in her will :) but she sent my parents a note about how wonderful they were, and she sent me a birthday card with a P.S. about what a wonderful niece I was. As for me - despite my sweets-minus genetic disorder :), the one thing I fall for is the maple donut. Whenever I'm picking up the family order (yes, call ahead to reserve Napoleons), But I always get one maple donut to-go. Unfortunately my review for my favorite bakery is not a good one as they did not bring the full order on the day of my wedding. I ordered and paid for donuts and a full dessert tray for my guests and only the donuts arrived. When they arrived at the venue my coordinator asked them about it and they had no idea. We called that day and no one answered. I had a bad feeling something wouldn't go as planned when we had written in email meetings two times and each time I showed up they either forgot or were too busy for me. When we contacted them the next week their response was passive aggressive and not sincere. To any bride, proceed with caution and be sure to have a back up plan. The donuts are still my favorite, but on the business end, they owe it to their loyal patrons to do better. read more

Couldn't believe I had lived in Biddeford for so long without knowing about Reilly's Bakery. There is nothing fancy or over the top about Reilly's. It is a large space with necessities and hard working people, making it a blueprint of why true Mainers enjoy it. On weekends if you want donuts, come early because they open early and the regulars will clear them out if you're not there in time. I love coming by for some donuts, especially when I used to work early on Saturday mornings. Favorites include glazed, butter crunch, jelly, and of course chocolate frosted. Instead of a chocolate glaze that most donut places use, Reilly's tops theirs with actual thick decadent frosting. If you're lucky you'll have a chance to grab a maple bacon donut, which are perfect in the fall. I always make a stop at Reilly's when I'm back in town. read more

She must not branch out much from her bubble in Maine, and knows little about loving all things maple. It's a mom and pop establishment, so its always good to support a local business, especially seeing that Biddeford has 4 Dunkin Donuts stores throughout the city (either stand alone stores or in wal-mart type places). read more

This is a one-of-a-kind bakery. It is very traditional and it feels a little like you are going back in time when you step in the door. They bake everything in house, its all homemade and fresh. I have gotten different types of pastries on several occasions, and recently ordered a cake from them. Extremely delicious and cute! 1000 times better the super market cakes. Purchased a lemon cake for the 4th of July. The cake was beautifully decorated, but was dry, with heavy frosting sticking to forks when washed, and even floating on the surface of the water. The bottom line: the cake was no good. Maybe other baked goods are of a different quality, but definitely will not order another cake.This was my first visit. read more

I have had Reilly's birthday cakes for 60 years!! I do not live in Maine, but spent my summers there, and we always went back to have my birthday there. Reilly's has also done 2 wedding cakes for us..keeping with the family tradition of their cakes. They decorated them exactly as my daughters wanted, and they were fresh and wonderful...enjoyed by all. We are not fruit filling, over the top people. We all like trational cakes. we had one this past August for my 60th birthday. Everyone loved it, and it was finished for breakfast!! One guest said "this is the only cake I have ever had that is just as good the next morning!!" My daughters are very sophisticated, well traveled, big city girls. I ordered a cake for a birthday to be picked up on 7/18. I ordered a cake just like one I saw in their FB photos with one minor change (the addition of a unicorn horn). While the cake I picked up was "similar" to the one in the photo, you could tell that whoever did this did not have the same skill set as whomever did the one they posted - it was still visually very cute so no biggie. My biggest problem was that you couldn't eat it! They used so much food coloring that the buttercream was incredibly bitter and made us gag at first bite! It turned your mouth the same color as the buttercream with one bite -- way too much! I called them the next day when they were opened and asked to speak to a manager. The lady - I believe her name was Amy - was less than helpful. She told me she would pass the message on to the owner because she didn't know what they would want to do. I called them on Thursday, 7/19... it is now Saturday 7/28 and NO CALL BACK from ANYONE!! I think it is very sad that the "owners" do not trust any of their "managers" to make a decision to correct their mistake - its even worse that the "owners" cannot be bothered to call a customer back to correct this. What POOR customer service. I was left with a $46 cake I had to throw away because you couldn't eat it. I will NEVER go back here for a cake - and you can be sure I've told everyone I know of what AWFUL service I received from a well known, local bakery. Shame on you Reilly's for treating your customer this way!! read more

I have been enjoying Reilly's cinnamon sugar donuts with coffee for years. I can always depend on these simple, classic, homemade style donuts to be fresh, not too heavy, and absolutely the best thing to enjoy with my morning coffee. I often purchase a Bismark to eat later for a sweet snack - perfect amount of filling and yumminess to pick me up when my coffee buzz wears off! Reilly's is classic, old-school, but with a neat new twist on things. They are not pretentious and not over- priced. Reilly's is good Maine people doing it right. My husband and I drove 10 miles to get doughnuts here after reading the reviews. We went in and we're greeted quickly and asked some questions about variety of doughnuts. The place is very dingy and big and cold. We got a half dozen for $7.50, price is fine. We went to take our first bite of doughnut, I broke off a piece of the orginal old fashion doughnut to put in my husbands mouth to see a big hole in the middle and it was raw! We proceeded to snag a bite out of the glazed old fashion, not raw and not good. I can not believe people think these are good doughnuts. They are greasy and flavorless. The lady asked if we wanted our box tied or not, why have the string if you are not going to use everytime. I think they would like to be Mikes Pastry in Boston but no chance ever.
