It's been over 10 years since I reviewed and I feel that I need to write a "newer" review since it has changed ownership. We have always been loyal to Tony's, because sometimes you want classic style of donuts that are so fresh and delicious run by a small group of hardworking people. Parking - can be tough since there is a re-energized crowd of Tony's Donuts fans. There is a little lot in front of the entrance and there is some street parking - can be tough with snow, especially this year. Luckily there is a steady stream of people coming and going. Although with the tables and chairs they have now, people may be hanging around longer. Our favorites: Glazed Donut filled with Raspberry, Any and All Donut Holes, Any Glazed donut like chocolate and molasses, maple Bismarck and really any of the Bismarck. Social media has really stepped up and certainly keeps me engaged. I highly recommend Tony's read more

Let me start this review by saying...Hallelujiah, Tony's Donut Shop lives on!! I recently needed five dozen donuts for a school event and was not sure if Tony's was still open as I had heard they were closing. Turns out they are not only still open, but were recently purchased by a current employee. How awesome is that?? Tony's is the best donut shop in Portland. Always fresh, great selection, friendly staff. Chocolate coconut has always been my favorite, chocolate sugared good too, and perfect jelly donuts. How does anyone in Maine, not know about Tony's Donuts or Congdon's? I submit to you...if you haven't heard of either, don't go there now! There will less for the rest of us AND you'll probably end up writing a rave review, like you're the smartest Elite Yelper or something, tell all your friends, so on so forth. Being a born here/raised here Portlander, I can say these things. Been going here my entire adult life. Why would I want to tell anyone about where to find the best donuts, the line is long enough there. Now that the tourist season is winding down (and they usually stay south of Biddeford, (try donuts at Riley's), I'm writing this review against my better judgment. Some of the best donuts I've ever had. Favorite donut shop in Portland, so nice we went there twice. Both days we arrived there very early (before 7) so their selection was excellent. They have all kinds of donuts, plus other pastries and sweets. We bought a lot of types so I can speak on a lot of the offerings at the store. Their bismarks, a kind of donut sandwich made of cream and jelly, are absolutely delicious: the dough is airy but with good flavor; the cream is, well, creamy. The jelly -- we tried both blueberry and raspberry -- is very good. Although not made in-house, it does not have the generic taste of a store-bought jelly. It has a richer taste. The lemon creams have a deliciously flaky pastry and the tart flavor of the lemon contrasts well with the cream filling, which I suspect is identical to the filling of the bismark. I'd never encountered a molasses donut before so I had to try it. It has a spiced flavor almost reminiscent of gingerbread. It is a cake donut like texture. If you like cake donuts, it's definitely worth a try. We bought an eclair, it was also very good. The custard filling was also not made in-house but was of good quality and the balance of chocolate, pastry, and custard was very good. They have no Boston cream donuts, so if that's your favorite the eclair is a good substitute. The eclair has a donut shell, not a pastry shell as many other places might have. We also got the mince turnovers. It was described as apple mixed with raisins and cinnamon. I personally could not taste the apple, I only tasted cinnamon. It was still very good and I thought the texture of the pastry was excellent. Sturdy but not stodgy. I know what you're thinking: surely he's done listing all the donuts he bought. Ha! Not quite! We also got a bavarian. That was maybe the least interesting since I had had it before. I would say it was on par with a filled custard donut you might get at any donut shop. There was another one that was in more of a pastry with creme and custard drizzled with chocolate on top. I can't remember the name but it was also very good. The chocolate donut was also OK. It would have been better if you can get it plain but it was sprinkled in sugar. The prices are very reasonable. The first time around we bought at least 8 donuts or more and it ran us around $18. The second we must have bought a few fewer as it was only $15. In both cases we nearly packed an entire good-sized box full of donuts. read more

I remember Tony's being the best place in town for donuts. I loved the molasses glazed. Today I was in Portland and decide to buy a few donuts. The first thing I noticed it doesn't look the same inside. Like I said it's been awhile since I've been here. The donut choices are fewer than I remember and the place was always busy. The gentleman who waited on me was very nice. I bought a molasses glazed, two lemon filled, a plain donut and a chocolate cruller. Drove 20 miles home to enjoy these treats with my husband. The sad thing was as we were eating a donut we both said they were stale. We then cut the other donuts to try and they were dry and tasted stale too. The lemon donuts had very little lemon filling in them. Sad to say my childhood memory of Tony's has changed. read more

Tony's molasses glazed is the cure for what ails ya' (unless you're intolerant to gluten, I guess). It's cakey without being dry, sweet without being cloying, and deliciously spicy. Portland has lots of good doughnut places, but Tony's is the real deal. read more

I know that locals love this place, a tiny little spot tucked away off the main road. As for me? Sure I like a donut once in a long while. Yes, the donuts here are good and there is a variety (if you get there early enough!) but at the end of the day, they're still just donuts to me. Tony's is a Portland icon. Their motto? "Life is uncertain... eat dessert first." Although on their website it also says, "Life is like a donut... sometimes you're in the dough... and sometimes you're in the hole!" Whichever it is, they've been making donuts and pastries for the city since the 1960's I believe. They're tucked away on Bolton St right off Congress (you can't miss them!), and - while the parking lot is small - they turn over customers quickly. People coming here are in and out because they know what they want! The donuts here are simple and old fashioned, so don't expect any eyebrow raising flavor combinations. That being said: I like a simple donut. I grew up on simple donuts. But these ones are too dry for me. I especially want to love the blueberry one, but it always seems like it's half - and sometimes much less - glazed. Why don't they glaze the whole donut here? I'll also echo what a few other folks have said: they really do taste a bit like day olds. read more

This is a gem of a bakery! This place is in constant motion preparing all kinds of confectionary deliciousness. I really enjoy Tony's doughnuts as they are how doughnuts are defined as. Light and flaky with a nice chewy finish. There are multiple flavors and textures to choose from. They have doughnuts, pastries, scones, and cookies. Once you've selected you can get a cup of tea or coffee and make use of one of the tables. A few were taken on the day we chose to come. I saw a lady in the parking lot at the supermarket with a Tony's Donuts bumper sticker. Being the donut lover that I am, I had to ask how they were. Her face lit up and she said "Tony's is so gooooood!." Emphasis on the long "o." I got a chocolate glazed donut and a very large vanilla cupcake. Both were delicious and cost less than $5 for both items. There was a good variety of donuts, cupcakes, and pastries. I honestly wanted to sample them all but my waistline begged for mercy. The place felt cozy and there was ample parking out front. Most importantly, the staff was very friendly, unlike another strongly branded donut shop that shall remain nameless.... Contrary to popular belief, this is not the best donuts in town. I came in looking for a sugar rush to celebrate making it through another week. I ordered the Glazed Donut, the Blueberry Filled Donut, and a small cup of coffee. For $5.37, that's already overpriced! Usually, donuts cost me less than .75 at a regular donut shop (filled or unfilled)! For the glazed donut, the dough and the glazed covering were too dry. The Blueberry Filled Donut... living in Maine, I thought this would be superb. It was subpar. Usually, the outside of filled donuts are slightly glazed and the filling enhances the donut. The coffee tasted burnt. I was expecting SO much more from Tony's! They solely have pastries, no breakfast sandwiches! Unfortunately, this is a hard pass for me. read more

First, they have parking and helpful kind people behind the counter. I recommend a dozen assorted, and they feature a great variety. This is probably the worst Customer Service I've ever experienced other than speaking to overseas customer service about my Amazon delivery! The older gentleman who manages the counter has absolutely no customer skills whatsoever. I called at 5:30 this morning to order pastries for nurses I work with a MMC. I asked for lemon squares and was told by him that they don't have these any longer. I asked about raspberry squares. I received the same reply. Then there was an uncomfortable silence. I finally asked him what type of pastry he still had. He gave me a list of French Horns, Chocolate Eclairs, Bismarkrks, etc. I said great! I'll take a dozen French Horns. He quickly replied that they didn't have 12. I had to ask how many did he have. He said 10. I said I'll take them. I then asked about the chocolate eclairs. He told me he had plenty and I asked for 6. Honestly, if I hadn't asked what they do have I would have hung up and been on my merry way. He is horrible to work with and makes you feel like you are interrupting his sports talk with the bakers. Last year I stopped in and asked for 10 chocolate eclairs and he was furious because I didn't call ahead. There were no other customers in the shop..... He said he needed time to put them into a box. Please call two hours ahead of time the next time. How does this shop do any business? I guess Two Fat Cats will have a new customer and I can have DoorDash or another driving company pick them up and deliver them to MMC for me. I am sad because this shop is not what it used to be. I woke up with a craving for pastries. I took me a drive to Tony's and picked me up some Bismarcks. I got a couple blueberry, strawberry, lemon and raspberry. I came into work with the yummy goodness and my team was so happy. Their pastries and doughnuts are made fresh daily and always so tasty.
