Went here with high hopes for a Valentine's Day dinner. Left utterly disappointed and hungry. We had a reservation at 7:45 and ordered around 8 pm. It was a simple burrito bowl and grilled cheese. Around 8:30 we were told our food ticket had not been given to the kitchen. This was not a big deal as we were enjoying each other's company. After another 45 minutes we had yet to see our food after placing our order for the second time. Multiple groups around us ordered, ate and left before our food came out. We eventually got so fed up we asked for the food to go as we were one of the last groups in the restaurant. They comped our appetizer but it was not worth anything close to the experience we had. Beware, if you want a good meal, good service and in a timely fashion, I'd choose another establishment. We will not be returning. read more

We were looking forward to a meal here based on the varied menu so made a reservation as we were traveling and made it for late as not sure exactly when we'd arrive. We arrived earlier than expected but were able to be seated. The restaurant is quite small and the closely packed tables had moveable narrow partitions between them making it feel somewhat claustrophobic. It took a short time to get menus and more time to have our orders taken. Forty minutes after arriving and 20 minutes after placing our orders we were told the lamb dish my partner wanted was unavailable. We waited again for our food and had to ask when we might be fed. Once the food arrived the replacement meal of beef stroganoff had six minuscule pieces of beef, a few tiny mushroom pieces hidden in a mass of pasta in an anemic, bland sauce. My beef short ribs were not as tender as one would expect. They were on a huge pile of mashed potatoes covered with melted cheese (at least I hope that's what it was.) The veggies were beautifully cooked but quite salty. Overall we were exasperated by the server not being aware the lamb dish was unavailable and the length of time it took to advise us. The food was food is the best I can say and we ate mostly because we were so hungry after waiting so long. We came extremely close to getting up and leaving but stayed simply because leaving and going elsewhere would delay our dinner even more. Overall a big disappointment. The only plus I can give was that they did comp us the beef stroganoff although I'd have gladly paid for both meals had we had better food and experience. read more

My wife likes going here for the French Onion soup. I hit the place for breakfast. My big plus is that they serve coffee in a French press. My suggestion to the server is to tell me how long it has been steeping before i get it so I can determine when I hit the press. Telling me that I can hit it anytime is somewhat accurate but not very helpful. Coffee was excellent I believe they do No. 6 coffee. My breakfast was the Mac and Cheese...2 types of cheese, braised beef and 2 eggs cooked to your liking. The dish was tasty garnished well with scallions. My big issue and this happened on my next trip is that the eggs were over cooked. My opinion (s that the griddle is too hot and my scrambled eggs seized up. On my next trip I had over medium and there were brown spots on the egg so I would say same issue. Service was adequate, not over the top but satisfactory...I would have to agree with some other reviews is that they prefer their locals. They do a great job of accommodating different dietary needs and tastes, which is highly appreciated. The menu clearly notates dishes that are vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free. The servers are also knowledgeable. For example, the server explained to my vegan husband that all of the bread items on the menu (buns, etc) were not vegan, which was very helpful because that was not noted on the menu. The service was also attentive and polite. They kept our water glasses filled and were quick with any requests we had. Despite the positives, my food just wasn't good. It had the veggie burger (I believe it was called the "gardener" or something like that), and it was terrible. It was a mushy clump of mildly flavored lentils that did not belong on a bun. My biggest pet peeve of veggie burgers are when they are not patties at all, but rather mush shoved on a bun. It was covered with a bunch of random stuff, but none of the flavors really came together well. The whole thing sounded way more appetizing on paper than it was in execution, and when you add in how messy and unpleasant it was to eat... it was just a fail. I am going middle of the road here with the review, though, because my husband really liked his tofu noodle bowl, and other meals I saw looked pretty good. A nice little restaurant that has a nice atmosphere. A cozy, comforting environment. Food was ok. I had the French onion soup and squid. The calarmai batter is missing the crispness. It has an open kitchen and I sat at the bar so it was very interesting to be able to observe what the chefs are doing. However, it gives the wrong vibe as the chefs looked so stressed getting food ready. I also thought the restaurant was a bit on the expensive side. read more

This place has the BEST food I've ever tasted! It was so good we ate there three times during our stay in Nelson. (However, if I had read the review about the disabled person with a service dog who was denied service, I would NOT have gone there. But, because I did, I am going to write a review on my experience only.) Their bacon Caesars are to die for. The drink is so delicious, I had two of them. Dining partner was disappointed because they were out of fajitas, so knock them down a star for being out of food that my dining partner was really looking forward to. I had a quinoa salad and it was fantastic...and big! I couldn't eat it all. Not even close. The service was satisfactory, if a bit slow. And, they did seem kind of uppity. We ordered a bottle of wine she dropped it off before opening it or having one of the guests at the table sample it. She appeared frustrated when one table member took time deciding on what they wanted. When she dropped off 4 of the 5 meals she realized one meal was not prepared and blamed it on the kitchen. Best charcuterie plate we've ever had. One of the Best hamburgers I've ever had (Jughead) and that includes a lot of high end burgers while living in Vegas for twenty years. Super rude waitresses! I've not been to a restaurant with such rude servers. We waited for almost an hour to get our food and when we got our food, it was cold! I got angry with myself because I gave her a tip which is like rewarding her rudeness and wished I didn't give her any to tell her that she was horrible. I would not go back in the restaurant again. There are other places much better than this place with great waitresses. This place is very unwelcoming to visitors. I wish the restaurant would take on better staff that are welcoming and nice to customers at least because this is supposed to be a restaurant where people skills is a major requirement. Came here today for lunch. I got the turkey croissant which was good. I added a side of the coconut curry soup also. This soup is made to order. It took me about 45 minutes to get my food from the time I ordered. I didn't know the coconut curry soup was made to order until after the fact. It was really really good! It was pretty spicy too. I also got to try the crispy chicken pita. That was was okay, but nothing really special. The food here was good but the wait time was kind of crazy in my opinion. Friends and I went out to relish after a recommendation from a friend. The food was great! I had the salmon burger. Our server was horrendous!! From the moment we first got there she was rude, short with us, and rolled her eyes while we asked questions about the menu. Actually. There was one time where she shouted if we were ok from a few meters away, but that was the only time she checked back in with us. The 4 of us decided to split the bill in half and have 2 of us pay. My partner was to bypass the tip and I was to tip for the whole amount (aprox $80.) He payed first and after seeing the print out, threw the receipt at him. When she gave me the pinpad, she had punched in a generous tip for me. I asked for it to be reset. I ended up tipping very poorly as a result of our dining experience. I would have not tipped but the kitchen deserved something for their great food. I would return to relish but would ask for a different server. Worst service ever. Very un-nelson. Just because people have been telling you you're pretty your whole life, doesn't mean you can treat people like garbage. It definitely doesn't mean that you'll do well at serving based on your looks. At first, the service was a bit slow. But then another server came on and that seemed to help. Had the Jughead burger and fries. Couldn't get my mouth around it. Was very tasty with a peanut sauce that complimented the burger nicely. Fries were nice and crispy. My wife had the pulled pork panini with a salad and she was very happy with it. She said she often regrets getting a salad over fries but not today because the salad was that good. My biggest complaint was that my mouth was sore from opening it so wide to eat the burger! I ordered the Aunt May, which has apple butter, brie and apple chips. Milder flavor but very tasty! While we were here, the place was bustling! Medium wait time for our meal but that didn't bother us at all. Polite waitress. When I asked what she would recommend, she said "Everything is delicious! If it wasn't, we'd take it off the menu." I really wanted to like this place - it has stylish decor and an eclectic, fine-dining meets grandma's house in Mayberry sort of menu. But after two lackluster dining experiences and one horrible experience, it is time to give up and review Relish for what is is: all style and no substance, with bizarre service to boot. I love food, and I am generally not very hard to please, but I will never, ever eat at Relish again. My first time there was about a year ago and I had an unmemorable, overcooked burger that was more "meatloaf patty" than proper burger. The meat tasted strongly of onions and garlic, which I can only assume were added to cover up the taste of poor quality meat, which had an overworked sausage-like texture. It is not difficult to make a good, juicy burger, so that should have clued me in to the lack of skill in the kitchen. To be fair, I have yet to have a truly good burger in Nelson, and for some strange reason most restaurants here tend toward meatloaf/meatball/sausage style burgers (Bogustown Pub is the single exception I have found so far - just straight-up beef, and only slightly overcooked), but for $16 at a "real" restaurant like Relish, I expected a lot more. I expected a place where the kitchen staff would take some pride in sourcing and showcasing quality ingredients, rather than cheaping out and adding fillers to their hamburger patties. My second experience was a few months ago. My brother was in town visiting and we could not get a reservation at All Seasons or Bibo, so I figured I would give Relish another try. Wow, this place gets very loud on a Saturday night. It was almost nightclub loud in there, and they were blasting horrible music. Not a good vibe when you just want to relax after skiing all day. I had an uninspired salmon dish, which I think may have been a special that night. I honestly could have cooked something better for myself at home and saved a whackload of money. On the other hand, my brother seemed to enjoy his fisherman's pie. The service was extremely slow and extremely flaky. We were brought someone else's appetizer and both started eating it before we realized that it wasn't ours. We then watched in horror as our waitress picked the plate up from our table and brought it directly to another table. She KNEW we had had our hands in it. Nasty! When we finally got the appetizer we ordered (poutine) it was not good. It was extremely dry - never a good quality in poutine. Again, poutine is a dish that is pretty difficult to screw up, even at a fast food restaurant, so the fact that it was sub-par says a lot about relish. I did not have a choice on my last trip to Relish. It was chosen by my dining companions. I thought it would be a safe bet to order the fisherman's pie, since my brother had thoroughly enjoyed it. I was wrong. First of all, it was nothing like the dish that my brother received, which was bursting with large chunks of seafood and had a delicious-looking crust on top. The dish I received was a flavourless milky broth with a few small pieces of mystery fish floating around in it and a slightly sour tang. A few bland white breadcrumbs were thrown on top and turned into a mushy paste as soon as I stuck my spoon in the dish. Once again, the service was also bad. I left Relish vowing never to return (my friends were also unimpressed with the food and the service). Then, within about 15 minutes of leaving I became violently ill. I will spare you the details, but the fish was twice as bad on the way back up. I have not gotten food poisoning this bad in my entire life - I was out of commission for 2 days, and could only eat toast and applesauce for a week! You suck, Relish! read more

I have eaten here when I've been in Nelson with family but I will not again. My close friend has been denied service as she has a disability and requires a service dog. Health code allows entry for service animals in restaurants, in fact it's illegal to deny service to a disabled person and/or their service animal. It's just a discriminatory and disgusting. Customer service here rocks just as much as the food. Our waitress was the best. We opted for salads (a wild mushroom and a roasted beet) for entrees. They were large enough to adequately fulfill our hunger, and the generous chunks of goat chèvre were the perfect touch of creaminess. Our cocktails were a nice blend of sweet:spirit ratio. Finally the GF chocolate cake (I still cannot believe this moist, fluffy cake was GF - DELICIOUS!) and the not GF lemon tart on shortbread crust. . . Neither disappointed. WONDERFUL! read more
