Struggling between 3 and 4 stars. The wood is good quality- kiln dried, fairly uniform but some thinner pieces if that is your cup of tea too. (You pick and load your own, so you have some choice.) Seems to burn well. That's the big picture, right? The wood seems good. The amount for the price is okay - not a bargain, but not confiscatory. But my experience with Jan wasn't great. I called and we had a nice chat and scheduled an afternoon pickup in a few days, which I repeated back to him and verified. I like supporting small businesses. When we got there, it was obvious at least another car was waiting too. It was chilly and somewhat rainy/drizzly, and the woman loading was taking her time and being social. It was a bit past my pickup time before she left... and then someone else immediately pulled in. Was Jan running late? I went and chatted with him. He said "Oh there you are you were supposed to be here at nine." I told him, no, I would never schedule a morning; we have a baby, the mornings are too hectic and I verified with him and had the text! I showed it to him. He brushed me off and said something to the effect of 'oh well, I'm just happy to be here'. It was odd. No apology, no you were right. He went from accusatory to oh well once he realised I had been right. Anyway, I thought we'd be next after this current car, but no. There was no direction, and another car started pulling in and I got out and asked him what the situation was. He said we could both share the loading space, but I had the feeling if I didn't push he would have just let me sit until I DID complain. There was no clarity so that was frustrating. If you choose to use him - verify, verify, verify. Be prepared to possibly wait a bit, too. read more

We were burning a small fire tonight and realized we were not sure where the wood came from this year, and I came scrambling back to yelp to try to figure out who the vendor was this past year. It is this place, Reliable Firewood. We have had a very broad set of vendors over the years from all around Seattle and we have had small loads, people who have behaved horribly when we pulled out the measuring tape, and several cords of green wood. Jan was fantastic and was kind, easy to work with, right in time, good sense of humor, and the BEST wood we have had so far in the PNW--and we have been here for 21 years. You found them! read more

I just moved to the Eastside from SoCal, it snowed, then snowed some more, and the temperature hasn't been above 36 since I arrived. I don't just want a fire, I need one each night, and those little bags of wood from the grocery store are not going to do the job. Thankfully I found Reliable Firewood through Yelp. Jan's location is easy to get to and he helped me load my CRV with enough split wood to keep me warm until I either acclimate to the Pacific Northwest winter or the weather gets less intense. Whichever comes first. His firewood is excellent quality, clean, seasoned and it burns beautifully. I'm very pleased and enjoying crackling fires thanks to him. I ordered from Jan about two years ago and loved the great quality firewood he brought. I was so happy with him and his customer service, that I re-ordered another face cord. It arrived today with lots of very large and many rotten pieces with signs of termite damage. Then I found and killed two termites. When I called Jan back to tell him about this, he said that some of the wood was from "down and dead trees" and that "this kind of thing was to be expected". He said he was sorry for bringing bugs into my garage, and that I should just store the wood outside. I was disappointed with his casual attitude and the fact that he knew there were termites in some of the wood and still brought it to my home anyway. I will not be using Reliable Firewood again. My husband came home and freaked out when he found a lot more termites and larvae. read more

First off, Jan has TONS of dry, seasoned firewood. It's cut in reasonable sizes and burns up nicely. I've had 2 great experiences with him so far. You call to make an appointment for pick up (usually Saturday am) and then load yourself. I feel like I get a good amount of wood for $80. For us, it lasts the winter for our fireplace usage. Jan is a talker, but a very nice guy. He even helps load if you need it. He's also dog friendly so that's nice - our pup had a great time running around and biting on some of the kindling. I have been traveling a long distance for getting decent firewood and now a place to pick up firewood on the way home, what a deal. I called up during the day and made an appointment with Jan to pick up a load of firewood. His specialty is selling wood for quantities less than a cord. You can pick up or have him delivery actually any quantity you want. His prices are very reasonable and he is very knowledgeable on his product. I actually filled up my trunk on my car and it worked out terrific. If you are after firewood, give him a call anytime and pick up is after 4:00PM by appointment only. read more

We've only picked up wood at his home, which is really close to almost anywhere (located close to freeways so easy to get to!) Definitely worth it if you have a woodburning stove/fireplace. Jan is a great, friendly, punctual guy with excellent communication. I called and ordered firewood last week, booked a time immediately (after Jan told me about the wood, it's source. how it's different than alternatives, etc.). Jan verified his arrival time the morning of and was within a few minutes delivering to my house. Jan is great. We had a terrible experience last year buying from BW firewood in Burien. The wood was wet and moldy, not uniformly cut, and extremely large pieces. Reliable firewood was a godsend. Everything we expected and more. All pieces are uniform length and dry. Made for easy stacking. We are extremely pleased with what we got and Jan earned himself life long customers. What I like about him is that he himself handle every stick of firewood he sells and it doesn't seem like he is in it for the profit. Disappointed. Wood quality wasn't what I was expecting. As I've been burning through it, many pieces don't have the density (bad growth? Insect damage?) that I expect from quality firewood. It's evident when the pieces are picked up as they are lighter than they should be and burn extremely quickly. In addition, many pieces are too large for my fireplace (full one half diameter!) requiring me to pull out my axe and split them, which I shouldn't have to do. read more
