John knows horticulture, which is surprisingly rare in the world of landscaping. I've spoken with many "landscapers" in the past, but few have any actual knowledge of plants and grasses. John knew exactly what I was talking about when I wanted to reseed my lawn with "shade-friendly" seed, and made the right recommendation to *not* lay down completely new sod, but instead to rejuvenate the lawn (aerating, thatching to remove moss, roughing up soil to create a better seed-bed, adding fertilizer, adding lime to balance soil PH, reseeding, and top dressing with peat). We decided to use Down to Earth Landscaping based on their stellar reviews on Yelp. They absolutely back these reviews up with their tremendous customer service. We needed to have our laurel and bamboo hedges trimmed down considerably, so we contacted them and requested a proposal for this job. Their prices were definitely competitive, but, due to other projects we needed to attend to, we decided to delay having this work done. John spoke with his partner, and they offered to take less money up front, and allow us to pay off the balance over a couple of months. Their willingness to work with us so that we wouldn't have to delay the project was truly "above and beyond" - - we were very impressed to say the least. As it turned out, we decided to just go for it, and pay for the entire job up front. I think their willingness to work with us made a difference in our attitudes too, and we just decided to "bite the bullet", and get the job done. Due to a miscommunication on our end, the hedges weren't trimmed down as much as we had needed on their first visit, but John and Aaron very promptly (and, cheerfully I might add) sent their crew out the very next day, and the hedges were trimmed beautifully and exactly to the height that we needed. I had dreaded contacting them because I felt badly that they would have to come out again, but their only concern was in keeping us satisfied as customers. How refreshing!! Based on Yelp reviews, I called to get an estimate done. John was friendly and told me to schedule using their Contact Info on their website so that he and his partner could both have access to my info and get back to me in a day to provide an estimate. It's been 3 days with no call or email response so I'm unable to arrange an estimate and get work scheduled. The reviews on Yelp are a little dated and I'm wondering if Down to Earth Landscaping grew beyond their forecast and are overwhelmed to provide the previous documented level of customer service and response times. I'm hoping that my request just got dropped through the cracks. In the meantime, I need my work scheduled and completed and will have to go through someone else. Disappointed as I'm hopeful that their work is excellent. Update: John returned an email after 5 days from request. I had gone with someone else to do the work. We hired them for the hedge trimming service. John responded quickly however it took him weeks to come for an estimate due to his sickness. This job wasn't time-sensitive for us, and he apologized for the delay. Overall, it was a great trimming service. Done right and fast. The communication was also good via both text and email. John is great to work with on bids and projects and is affordable. What I like best is that he really listens to what you want, and addresses all of those items without forgetting any. In addition, he makes great suggestions based on his expertise. He is easy to communicate with and even sent me pictures of plants as he was picking them out for me at the nursery. This is a review based on the planning/quote phase. Not on the landscaping service itself. It took me 2 weeks to get them scheduled to come onsite for a quote. Then it took another 5 days to even get a quote - which was then too high. I don't know who runs this company, but hopefully they get the front-office fixed. I went through the pain of going through all of this based on previous reviews - so maybe if they get a new office manager or retrain her, it might warrant the high reviews? But I'll be going with others as they seem to be more responsive and more competitive on pricing. read more

I recently bought a remodeled vintage home in West Seattle that had been vacant for a very long time. The yard was a disaster and needed to be completely stripped and started from scratch. John and his team helped me realize my vision every step of the way and were a joy to work with from start to finish. They installed cedar chips, gravel and pavers that have steppable baby tears in between. They planted gorgeous coral maples and limelight hydrangea trees along with wonderful grasses planted in cedar chips. We used stock tanks to plant veggies and flowers. I had a wooden deck that was way past its prime and needed replacement. I also had a bamboo/blackberry infestation in my backyard as well as a lack of curb appeal from the front. Aaron and John made a great suggestion to replace the wooden deck with a flagstone patio. It is half the cost of a wooden deck, almost no maintenance, and it looks fantastic. The back and front yards look great as well. Their quality/workmanship is very good. I contacted Down To Earth landscaping after finding them online. After seeing some pictures of previous work, I figured I'd give them a shot. I first spoke with Aaron regarding a quote of trimming some trees, hedges, and general yard maintenance. He showed up to my house promptly as he said he would, and quoted me a very reasonable price for the services. We scheduled a day for him to come back and complete the work. He was again on time and immediately proceeded to complete the agreed upon work. Aaron was very easy to work with and I felt he was honest in his opinions and responses, telling me the truth about things I may not need to do immediately. Most companies would just try to sell you everything they could but Aaron was honest and straight forward. I was very impressed with the finished product and even though it took Aaron and extra half hour, he never charged me for it. He also hauled away all trimmings and left my yard looking perfect. After neglecting our yard for several months, my husband and I were going back and forth on whether we should devote an entire weekend to working outside or bring in the professionals. It quickly became clear that neither of us wanted to sacrifice our free time, so I came to Yelp for help. After doing a quick search, I found these guys and decided to reach out based on their excellent reviews. John was super quick to get back to me and scheduled for someone to come out and assess our yard. Aaron was quick and thorough in his assessment and sent us an estimate the very same day. Since we have never hired a landscaping crew, we did not really have a good sense of what to anticipate as far as cost or service. The estimate did take us aback slightly (again, this was due to our inexperience and naiveté of how much work was involved and the quality of work that we could expect). Never the less, we decided to go ahead with the service. The guys came out just a few days later with a crew of 3 and worked tirelessly the entire day. Driving home the same night, I couldn't help but think maybe we should've just done the work ourselves and how much better could it look with a professional's touch?? Good lord I could not be more wrong! Our yard looks IMPECCABLE! Hubs and I could've spent an entire week out there and it still would have looked a little "rough around the edges" rather than the pristine oasis that we enjoy today. I, for one, do not know the first thing about pruning or edging, or anything like that. These guys do and quite literally overhauled the whole property. As soon as I saw our yard in the daylight, I did not have a shred of regret in bringing these guys in. I had a spring coming out of the rocks in my yard. Wasn't sure what to do. Had one guy look at it and he didn't know what to do. These guys made a french drain with river rock on top and blended with the pathway that was there. Looked good and no more water running off ( they weren't expensive either). I had a good experience with Down to Earth Landscaping. They have several people so your experience will largely depend on who gets assigned to you. I was assigned Aaron and had basically no contact with anyone else there. Aaron and his team did a great job with heavy pruning/weeding, thatching and reseeding my back lawn, and planting a line of hedges. Aaron came back several times to check up on things and reseeded when necessary and made adjustments. He loaned me a sprinkler timer for no charge without making a big deal about it (like some other companies will). I'm giving 4 starts instead of 5 though because Aaron is terrible with communicating exactly when he is coming and responding to texts/calls. I will usually call or text him a couple of times over a period of a few days before I get a response. However, when he does come around he does a fantastic job and takes care of everything. I plan to use him for more work in the future. read more

I have been using down to earth landscaping since July, and I can not say enough good things about them. When I moved into my new house the yard was to big for me to maintain especially with me schedule. So I needed a landscaper for maintenance, originally I contacted 3 companies, 1 never got back to me, 1 sent me a lengthy email about why the coyly not help me, and then there was Down to earth, I sent an email on a Sunday and had a response from John with in 2 hours in fact every time I have emailed I get a response with in a few hours. After that first contact john stopped by my house the next day for an to give an estimate for the initial clean up (my yard had gotten a bit over grown) and ongoing maintenance. Both were very reasonable, after agreeing with the quote John was able to get someone out to my house that week for the clean up. That he was able to get out so quickly was an unexpected surprise, because the was the week of 4th of July. His crew did a fantastic job on my yard and continue to come every two weeks without fail, doing a great job each time. If you are looking for a dependable landscaper for yard maintenance this is your guy. read more
