I would not recommend Reliable Marine Electronics. My experience with them recently hasn't been good and writing this to caution other boaters. 1. $200 per hour for service. 2. 2 hour minimum so you could be out of $400 with no results 3. Availability is months out. I was told 3 months out. 4. I was quoted by them, found another vendor that did just ok. Went back to Reliable Marine Electronics and they were offended that I went to a lower price vendor. Based on that they refused to provide additional service. 5. It's odd for a business to make such an emotional decision. All vendors are competing so they should not be offended if a customer tries a lower cost option before paying $200 per hour. Anyways..that was my experience...hopefully other customers have had better..Reading through some of the other reviews it looks like the results are mixed. Some customers are happy...others or not..many complain about their price point. read more

I recently hired Reliable Marine Electronics for a major electronics upgrade on my Beneteau 37, including installation of a new Halo Radar. They had previously done work for me a couple years ago to re-do a wind-sensor install that a previous company had done incorrectly. While not the cheapest, Reliable Marine did excellent work, cleaned up after themselves and had friendly and courteous technician so I thought let's do it. This time it was a pretty substantial job, about $8K worth with half of it labor, which involved cutting new holes for the new instruments on the binnacle, fabricating a new bezel for my wider chart plotter and of course a mast climb for the radar install. While doing that they also found the VHF antenna cable inside the mast was frayed and offered to replace it with a new one since they were already climbing the mast. All new cables installed in the mast were protected with an extra sleeve at the outlet near the bottom to prevent chafing etc, a small but important detail. They also installed an auxiliary autopilot controller for me which involved a cutting a precise hole in the cockpit wall and fishing the NMEA network cable down inside, not something I would dare do myself! Overall I was very happy with the outcome, and while it cost me a bit extra, I know the boat is better now then when it was new! I would recommend Reliable Marine to anyone looking for quality workmanship, courteous service, and above all, technicians who show up when they say they are gonna show up! I will hire them again when I am ready for another upgrade. read more

I am under deposit with RME for a new radar, chart-plotter and wind vane. So far I chose Reliable over their main competitor because they made me feel better about asking questions, and modifying my order to suit my specific needs. The competitor seemed less interested in my business when I wanted to scratch some line items off the order that I wasn't going to ever need or want. Wesley and his team took their time to answer all my questions (there were many) and they even came out to my boat at my request to go over some concerns I had. I just had my 3rd job completed by Reliable over the past 12 months. This one was "big". I had them install two Raymarine Axiom chart plotters, Quantum 2 Radar, ACU 400 Autopilot with a new control head as well as repair the TV antennae install that was incorrectly done two years ago in the boat yard. I'm super pleased with the quality of the work, and the timeliness. They also completed the job close to the quoted price. The Technician for the install was Ian. The previous two times it was Wesley. Both are extremely knowledgeable, provide great advice, and most importantly - do a killer job on the actual installation. I wish I had photos to show the work at the foot of my mast. I had them upgrade my wiring that passes through the cabin top with Scanstrut deck seals. Very clean and professional (and it no longer leaks) look compared to what was there before. To say I'm pleased with the services received from Reliable Marine Electronics would be an understatement. They are my go to shop when I need any electrical work done onboard Painkiller II. read more

I walked into their store yesterday in desperate need of a new vhf antenna because ours had broken in transit. The young gentleman at the front counter graciously called Jacques, one of their technicians who was out in the field and put me on speaker phone where I described the situation. Jacques was extremely knowledgeable, and made a few suggestions. With his help, we were able to fix the antenna and raise the mast and launch our new boat!! The workers were solid, and generally did a good job. However, the job was more work than we had expected. We know there are many kinds of things that make boat projects unpredictable, but even so, it seemed like a lot more work than should have been needed. Things took a turn for the worse when the owner got involved. The owner dragged out his time on our boat to bill us more. My husband was frustrated by that game. In general the owner was condescending and he provided multiple incorrect solutions that felt like grasping at straws. Anyway, based on labor at $125 per hour, we were expecting the bill to be X and it was thousands more. Little breakdown given as to how they arrived at their total. When we asked for an explanation, we were told some tasks are billed at $155 an hour and others $125. That dual billing structure was never explained to us. Some of the things that they themselves said fall under the $125 category were billed to us at $155. They also charged $155 for drive time. And I guess the number that they initially quoted us before we hired them was a mistake because they hadn't taken certain things into account. After pointing this out, they did reduce the bill by almost $1,000, but we still feel like we were over billed. Despite the enormous bill, there were some things not working correctly. My husband eventually figured out how to fix the problems himself while underway. We do not plan to use Reliable Marine again. We felt like the owner determined we were easy targets to make a quick buck off of. Oh, and one more thing. They required a deposit by credit card before they would come out. As soon as the work was done, before we had been given the bill, the owner had asked for us to pay the final balance by credit card right then and there. We said no, saying we'd pay by check once we got the bill. When our credit card bill came, the charge for Reliable Marine was more than we authorized. It turns out they have a 3% credit card surcharge that they had forgotten to disclose. Glad we chose to pay by check because we would have been out several hundred more dollars with the credit card surcharge. read more

Roger and his crew are the best. My boat just turned 40 and had not had an electronics upgrade in 15+ years. On top of that, I easily brushed off some of the crazy things I was ignoring. I had AC outlets with skull and crossbones tape over them saying "Do Not Use" and a massive bowl of old wire spaghetti everywhere. Roger and his crew were honest and fair. I actually consider them my new friends and make sure to refer everyone to them that asks. I ended up doing the whole thing top notch. I got the latest Garmin suite with radar, chart plotter, autopilot, as well as an AIS transmitter. They built me an inboard autopilot rig that could handle an 80 footer (Mine is a 33. I will share pictures next time I am up). They cleaned up my mess and kept to their quote and budget. I make trips between Santa Cruz and San Francisco a couple times a year and you have to be able to trust your equipment and the folks that installed it. I would highly recommend these folks and have no regrets. Also, I probably have the most tricked out Ranger 33 in the world. read more

While enroute to San Francisco by boat, my vessel's radar failed. I called Reliable Marine Electronics and they sent a technician to meet me at a Bay Area marina early the following day. The tech was very familiar with with Raymarine radar and had my problem repaired in short order. I want to specifically recognize Roger for his courtesy and helpfulness in dispatching Caleb, who quickly and professionally diagnosed and repaired my radar. We have had good experiencers, with fair prices in the past. On "ordinary" issues they were fair - not cheap, but fair. With a product they are less familiar with, we ended up paying to "educate" their staff on the product. They charged for the time their staff spent getting "educated (on the technology/product). It ended up being almost as expensive as buying a replacement product. We had a product fail and the system was bought to their location. They charged for an evaluation, and then a diagnosis. The remedy was to replace the part being considered. In fairness, they let us make our choice. However, they did not offer advice or suggest that it would be less expensive, or almost as expensive to buy a replacement. We asked them about some consideration on their labor (price) afterwards. Their position was that they had spent more time than they charged. All that they found was what we found on the internet. Their diagnosis was a confirmation of what we initially told them. Take care that you must be aware of what you ask Reliable, and Roger to do. While he may have experience and be a good businessman, in our case his staff did the work. They did not know much about the issue. read more

My ICom 710RT radio was not working so I had Jacque come to my boat to diagnose the issue. $125/hr with a 2 hour minimum. $500 later Jacque determines the radio must be sent to ICom America for factory repair. I box up and send the radio off to ICom. One week later I get word from ICom. They have replaced the external 30 amp fuse. The rest of the radio is fine. A FUSE! I paid $700 to have a fuse replaced??? When I called Reliable they tried to say it was the internal fuse, but that is a 5 amp fuse. Shame on you Reliable Marine. A fuse is Troubleshooting 101, right up there with "is it plugged in?" No offer to make it right with any kind of refund, partial or full. read more

Reliable Marine was the first company I thought of when attempting the task of upgrading my electronics on my sailboat. After talking to several other people at the marina I am staying, I started to second guess my decision. First, I paid them $250.00 to do an "evaluation" of my boat. The first appointment I had with them, they never showed up. They said the "didn't know what happened. The second appointment they send Wesley, who was a nice kid, but knew nothing about my boat, the electronics required or the systems presently in place. Within two days Wesley provided a quote which was over $15,000 including $7,000 worth of labor. At that point, I went out an got two other estimates from certified Raymarnine technicians. One quote was $7200 and the other was $6300 including all parts and labor. Make no mistake about it...they will overcharge you. They assume that just because you are a boat owner that you have tons of money. After looking into it further and inquiring with other vendors and marina peers, this is what they are known for....overcharging. Several emails to Jacque the owner basically boiled down to, well, that's what we charge and apparently its good that you shopped. Taking advantage of the public is a bad reputation to have, however, Jacque seems to be proud of the reputation. I hope he is as proud of it when he goes to court with me later this year. They should be ashamed of themselves and their unethical business practices. read more

The website for Reliable said they could fix electronics when the manufacturer couldn't. I took my Tridata in because the knot meter wasn't working and constantly displayed 655. They said they would bench test it. When I returned the bench test said it displayed 655 and that I would need a new unit. That was $100 and one hour of bench testing. read more

We own a classic sailboat that was built in the 1950's, which we berth in Alameda. We had a frustrating electrical problem and could not discover why our alternator was not charging our boat's batteries. Since we are moored in Alameda, I was anxious to locate a local marine electrical company who could fix the problem and stand behind their work. After reviewing their website on a Monday morning, and feeling comfortable that they were competent and trustworthy, I reached out to Reliable Marine on a Monday morning and, that afternoon, Jacques Dailey, Senior Technician, was aboard our boat trouble shooting our problem.
