I can't say enough about Ed and Reliable. I won't call anybody else in the future. Reliable was responsive, the price was better than fair and the work was superb (and clean). We had a large half dead black cherry tree that was in need of major pruning, massive branch removals, two small tree removals (in between the two trees you see in the pics), and removal of a massive nest of vines that was essentially engulfing all 4 trees that had existed in that space (2 dead trees, 2 alive) and was choking out the two trees that were "alive." Reliable removed the two dead tree, all the vines, substantially pruned both remaining trees and cut off 4 large hazardous (massive) branches on the large tree that were essentially growing horizontal. I haven't taken the time to leave a lot of contractor reviews but these guys should (at least) be over 4 stars on Yelp. Don't call anybody else. read more

Terrible job - they trim too aggressively and damage the trees. Do not hire without close supervision or your trees may suffer and die.

The service was great when Ed was running the business but now that his son is in charge, they are shameless rip-off artists. A simple cleanup job of a large wall vine fall-off was $2500 with his representations that it would require 3 trucks, a chipper, parking for 4 vehicles, & 4 staff. They showed up with 2 guys & one truck, & nothing more. They were done in 30 minutes. We received another bid of & $1000 the day Hufnagel was already working on our project. When we called to complain, the Hufnagel son said, "God bless you. Jesus saves. This is America. That's how it works." We have been clients for 20 years! ouch ... was pressed for time and used Reliable for trimming a wall of ivy . took 45 minutes and charged $2500 .. i got a second bid ( after the fact ) for under $1000. When I questioned Reliable their answer " well , you agreed to the price and " This is America " Blatantly cheating and being arrogant about it is not " America " I cannot stress my disgust ! Reliable Tree Service trespassed on my property and sprayed noxious insecticide with no notice to building management or tenants. Company was hired by a neighbor, illegally entered our yard and climbed fire escape to my 2nd floor deck, and proceeded to spray gallons of unknown chemicals on our yard, tree and deck. Crew were wearing full-face respirator masks, but showed no concern for tenants or bystanders. Noxious fumes immediately filled our apartment, causing headaches, dizziness and respiratory issues. My family had to immediately leave our apartment and were unable to return for hours. Fumes and smells persisted throughout the day, forcing us to "air out" apartment and scrub down all surfaces. RTS crew were unable to identify chemicals used or provide a Safety Data Sheet for a presumably carcinogenic / neuro-toxic substance. Company will not return phone calls or emails requesting information or to discuss the incident. read more

Just had a massive tree removed from my yard, crew was exceptional. They work safe and quickly and cleaned up as much as possible. They were the cheapest of 6 quotes, one company turned the job downs "too difficult" one quote was 2 thousand more. I am a happy customer. read more

Bad customer service. left the mess in our backyard and didn't clean up. They took a fence down during the job and left it down afterwards. Tree was taken down successfully but the experience sucked. I've taken other trees down before and they do an amazing job cleaning up afterwards. Not this company. Also hated the fact that when they gave me my estimate, they said other companies would charge me over 20k. I did my homework prior to them coming and that was absolutely not the case. Initially was very excited to use this company as they offered us the best quote to remove our large tree. Our quote and estimate was done by Ed (Father & owner) for $6,500. Ed came to look at the tree as well as his son he had said. We agreed on price and Jorge immediately began working on the permit, overall this took a matter of 2 weeks that we were waiting. Today 2 weeks later I receive a call at 7am saying they will be there within in hour / hour and a half tops as asked to move our cars. We did everything that was asked, hour and a half passes by and the owners son(extremely rude and unprofessional) shows up with a team of people , heads to the backyard where the tree is and immediately turns rude, disrespectful, and angry and says how could his father quote us for that price AND then he kindly changed the price to $12,000!! What a nice kid as he blatantly said f*** you to us. This is the second service I've had Reliable Tree out to do on our property. Last year, they came out to remove 3 trees which were in the way of work that we were having done to our home. Prompt, professional, reasonable and left me completely satisfied with the end result. This week they came out to remove some trees that were dead/dying/leaning as well as to trim all of the trees on our property (and I can tell you that we have a LOT of trees!). The finished product is amazing. They showed up on time and spent the entire day. The trees were down and stumps ground lickety split and the rest of the day was spent on the trimming. They left the property looking amazing and clean. I will be using them for all of my tree needs from now on. No need to call anyone else! read more

They did a great job cutting very large dead branches from a large sidewalk tree. There were many PSE&G wires to work around. They were fast efficient and reasonably priced and cleaned up the sidewalk and dead branches. Would highly recommend them. Nice people too! read more

I have never posted a review for any business - ever! But I just have to about this business because I don't want any other home owner to go through what I am going through. I met with the owner's wife once when she gave me a proposal and that's it. The day of the agreed job, she wasn't present and her employees did not complete the job. When asked about it and if I can meet with her for 5 minutes to show her what they have not finished, she would not meet me. She went by the yard on her own and said it wasn't finished. So they will return to finish job that day. Never showed. I called and called and she said very busy and I'll have my guys get to it when they CAN within 2 weeks. Waited the 2 weeks - no show. Very argumentative and unprofessional. Plus poor customer service. Would not return phone calls. Found out they have complaints with Consumer Affairs of New Jersey. read more

Needed to have a tall tree trimmed. Had about 10 or so dead limbs that needed to be removed. I contacted several companies. Ed Hufnagel, Reliable Tree Service's President came out personally to give me an estimate and showed up when he said he would. The estimate was fair and reasonable compared to some others. They then came out a week later, arriving again on time and did the tree trimming. The whole process took about 2 hours. They then removed all tree debris afterwards and cleaned up. To find a certified tree expert in Hudson County was a challenge. Calling Reliable Tree Services was a pleasure. One call made, Ed came and gave an estimate for the job, and once the ok was given he set up a date. Should be called "UNRELIABLE Tree Service." If you enjoy paying for incompetence and utter lack of professionalism, go ahead and hire them. Owner's son promised he would cut off only the top half of my tree and leave the bottom intact. Instead, they cut everything, leaving only a stalk. Rather than apologize for ruining the tree, owner's yelled at me, threatened to sue, and actually tried to charge MORE than the invoice. Very shady character. Very poor work.
