This store is well organized and has plenty to select from - especially 7-inch 45s, which I specialize in. If you are really looking for something - they may have it. BUT bring your money. The pricing is way out of line with reality. I was paying $2 for very nice 45s (with picture sleeves) a day earlier in Wake Forest. Here, they are $5. Very common 80s artists - Billy Ocean, Juice Newton. More popular artists go for like $10 for a picture sleeve 45. You can do better on eBay (even adding in the shipping). Much better options in Greensboro - McKay's, Hippo Records, Soul Relief. read more

I was making my way down the east coast, driving from NY to Florida. Instead of driving 14 hours and getting there in 2 days. I decided to go leisurely and stop at Record stores along the way. As I am a ardent Vinyl collector/ listener. As I drove up to the store from the road, the large free standing sign, with the name of the store caught my eye. The building had nice signage as well. As I entered I was immediately impressed by the size of the Store and the layout. In addition to thousands of records,. There is a vast array of VHS movies and Digital Video Discs all very neatly organized on the left hand side of the store. Cassette tapes and a very large compact disc section as well. Don't forget the very large 45 section as well! Only USED Records are sold. No NEW Vinyl. The owner came up to me, within a minute or so after I walked in. He said hello and smiled. He asked what was my main interest. I told him records! He said every record was cleaned, and graded ( M M- VG+ VG VG-) All the records are alphabetized and arranged by the year each and every record came out by each artist. He asked that if you take a record out, to please help them out and put it back in the exact spot it was in. With the seemingly endless rows and rows of neatly arranged records. I knew I would be spending a lot of time in the store. I found the meticulous way each artist was arranged ( exact date each release came out 1968 to 1988) to be very helpful. Three are signs asking one, not to open the records, but any item can be taken up to the counter to be looked over. I can understand how some people might feel a bit put off by that request. As I always check each record before buying. However the owner told me as I was looking to bring anything over to the counter to check the condition. There were several copies of a particular artist ( America) one graded at M- another at VG+ VG and VG-. Each priced accordingly to the condition. Which gives a buyer a choice as to what they want to spend. I found the prices to be quite reasonable.Some of the rarer more collectable hard to find records by a particular artist, were priced higher. But no record on the floor was marked above $50.00. However John told me he did have rarer records priced over $50.00 on the walls and in the back of the store if I was interested. I was impressed that I found several releases in a artists catalog, that I had never seen before. Which was pretty amazing as I have been to well over 200 record stores. There were also sections arranged by just letters (B, C, D T etc) not by artist. These were the most intriguing. As these sections were made up of obscure artists. Many of them with only two or one release In their musical carer. Some of them were bands local to the area. As I made my way thru the pop rock, folk sections ( leaving out the separate sections for blues, jazz, county, big band, soul, gospel as I sadly had limited time) my pile of records getting larger and larger. I chatted with John about the nature of the business. He said a lot of younger people are now coming in to buy records, in addition to those aged from 40 and up. After 2.5 hours that flew buy. I brought my stack of Vinyl to the cash register. The owners wife was working behind the counter and we chatted a bit. John was very friendly helpful and shared a lot of interesting informative information about the history of music and the pulse of the brick and mortar record business, over the 25 years he has been in business. I have been to many many records stores over the past 34 years. I would have to say. This is one of the best stores I have been to. From the vast selection of all types of music. The maticlous organization of each artist by exact year each record was released. To the excellent use of space in the store. Along with the choices of LP's45 RPM Records compact discs, cassettes, VHS movies along with DVDs. Gives one a vast choice of treasures to take home. I highly recommend all music lovers to visit this treasure trove of physical items. In a world where downloading and streaming makes music something cold and sterile.Verses the warm realistic, natural sound of Vinyl. The joy of that tactile feeling Of sliding out a record and putting it on the phonograph. Owing music in a physical format, makes it much more valuable and precious. read more

Where to start - how about we go with the good and end with the bad. The good - they have a pretty impressive collection of 7"s, VHS, CDs, and LPs. I'm collect 7"s so when I stumble on a place with an organized 7" section like the one at Remember When Records I'm usually extremely happy and excited. The entire shop is insanely organized, the 7"s and LPs are cleaned* and in new sleeves*, and all of the music media are labeled properly so you can find what you're looking for easily. That's the end of the positives. Now time for the negatives. I collect 45s and have no problem dropping a significant amount of money when I find ones when I'm on travel. Walking into Remember When Records, even after reading the many critical but fair reviews, I was keeping an open mind that I might have a good experience and walk out with some gems. Within a minute of walking in I knew this would not be the case and that stopping here was a mistake. First, let's talk about the owner. I get it that a lot of people new to "vinyl" are people that don't know how to handle records or how difficult it is to keep a collection or shop organized. The owner seems to think his shop is his personal collection and the customers should feel privileged to be looking through his collection. While flipping through their meticulously organized 45 collection he came over and told me not to take the record out of the stack since it would screw up his "system". Ignoring this I pulled out a $10 "VG+" graded Bobby Bland 45 I had been looking for a second copy of that had a huge scratch on it. The owner, without a hint of awareness, told me "only 10% of the 45s we take in make it to the floor; we clean and grade all of them before they make it to the floor - you won't find that anywhere else". When I showed him the scratch on a "VG+" graded 45 he just looked at me like I was insane. Not sure if the owner is just bored but he really wants to talk to you even when you make it apparent you don't want to be bothered. Others have mentioned he likes to "mansplain" which is not only true but seems to be something the owner really enjoys doing. He kept talking about how important it is to clean your records and how he won't sell a record if it's too dirty that he can't clean it to his satisfaction. Since I have a VPI machine in addition to numerous other record cleaning devices I decided to ask him what he used to do his cleaning since he was so proud of his system and if I could see it. For some reason he quickly ignored this question and suddenly had to go talk to another person in the store that had tried to ignore him earlier. Now let's talk about the actual inventory. All of the LPs, outside of the thousands of beater records and 12" singles in crates on the floor, are sealed so you can't inspect the actual wax without interacting with the owner. This might just be me but unless a record is going to sell for $50+ why bother with this silliness? After seeing how a scratched 45 could have a "VG+" grade I think it's probably pretty obvious why they have the LPs sealed. Whenever a shop has a $5 record in a sealed sleeve it's automatically a sign that they don't move much inventory and what they do move is likely not in great shape. One thing I noticed when we walked in (and was confirmed once I started flipping through LPs) is that there's a lot of dust on the inventory here. One might think it's because the section I was flipping through (blues) wasn't very popular but the dust was present in all sections beyond the first five to 10 records. When I finally decided to look at the actual prices on a few of the LPs I'd found I was interested in it all made sense - every thing in the shop that's in a sealed sleeve is way way way overpriced. Want to pay $30 for a worn out 1980s repress of "Born to Run"? This place has you covered. Looking for "The New 2 Live Crew" 12" that's present in most dollar bins? Not here, it'll set you back at least $25. Any record over $10 that's sealed you can likely be assured is not an original pressing like their grading states but a later repressing that you can find much cheaper elsewhere. When we were checking out (my mother found a 45 she wanted and I picked up two Latimore 45s for a friend) the owner suddenly wanted to show me some "rare CDs" I just had to see. Sensing this might be another example of the absurdity of this joint I humored him. Walking over to the CDs I found more of the same - lots of dust, lots of stuff you'd find at thrift stores for $1, and absurd pricing like it was still 1993. read more

I've been here twice and I would have to agree with the other reviews about the owner. First time I came in he was fine, didn't really talk to me much. He tried to get me to buy a Led Zeppelin tape though and idk why because I never mentioned them to him. That trip I bought an XTC tape that was labeled as "heavy metal," which I thought was kinda funny. Then recently I came in with two of my friends to look for music and the owner was kind of rude. He extensively explained to my friend (who wasn't even looking at records) about how she shouldn't place the records out of order, then came over to me and my friend and asked if we heard him. Then he started to kind of follow us around, I think he was scared we were gonna shoplift or something because we're teenagers. I also want to mention the price of the records. I don't know his grading system and I get that they're older pressings and all but, these are some pricy records. A quick search on Discogs will find you the same pressings for cheaper. Though they have less variety I'd much rather go to Mckay's or Hippo Records. read more

I stopped by this week on a business trip. The store is quite amazing. A lot of vinyl to select from. The prices were a bit high, but I still found a few reasonable items. A few of the reviews here mention the rudeness of the owner. I didn't get that at all. He was helpful, a little anal yes, but still nice. The store is very well organized and he just wanted to keep it that way. I actually appreciated the organization as I didn't have a lot of time to push through albums I wasn't interested in. As they say, you get what you pay for. To pay a higher price, you get a clean, well organized store with albums that have been cleaned and graded. Not a bad deal in my opinion. read more

This is an excellent record store. As others have said, prices can be a bit high, but you pay for the quality of the album. I've found reasonably priced albums every time I visit this store. I really wanted to love this place, I really did. Let me start off by saying I'm a serious record collector and have been to dozens of stores across the country. I was in town for the summer and saw pictures of this place and knew I had to check it out. I know sometimes serious collector-oriented record stores can get negative reviews from inexperienced buyers who are taken aback by the whole experience. I went in with high hopes and a very open mind. What I found left me with a terrible taste in my mouth. They have a vast stock of amazing records, mostly because they price everything so absurdly it all sits there. The owner is rude and is convinced he knows everything there is to know about records, yet he mislabels everything (which matters when every record is taped shut and you have to bring it up to the counter to even examine it). What really drove me over the edge was my return experience. Because of his obsessively anal sorting and labeling system, i bought like 4 records clearly advertised as first pressings that were nowhere near that. Upon politely trying to explain this to the owner the next day, he; A. seemed completely confused by the concept of identifying pressings by anything more than just the catalog number (label design, deadwax, etc), B. Seemed deeply angered that anyone would want to return his records (despite the fact that they were clearly advertised-as, and sold-as something they're not). In fact he pretty much told me he never wanted me to come back. The educated record buyer should stay far away from this place. At the best it will unfairly gouge you with its FAR above current market prices. At the worst it will leave you with little faith for humanity. There's thousands of great record stores in this country with vast and incredible stocks and friendly and knowledgeable staff. I learned about this place from WRAL's Tarheel Traveler. Had some free time this morning so I decided to have a lil' road trip to Greensboro! Prior to the trip I read about all of the negative comments from you yelpers about John being a jerk and rude to his customers I thought may be he's just serious about his business and passionate about his inventories. And he is. I stepped into the store around 11:30 and obviously I was the only customer there on a late Tuesday morning. He greeted me with a smile and we introduced each other. He showed me around the store and explained how he categorized/catalogued his inventories and the gradings on the records. He is incredibly organized. Each record is meticulously cleaned, graded and packaged in new paper jacket and would include the original jacket too, assume it's in good condition (for example a Charlie daniel's band record I purchased today). They are pricier than ebay and some used book stores/thrift stores but believe me, every single record I purchased today was nothing but excellent and I know each one on the shelves, crates would be the same. Bottom line, if you respect the records hopefully he will respect you back. read more

The same peons that would applaud Jack Black kicking people out of a record store in HIGH FIDELITY, are the same people on here complaining about John and Remember When Records & Videos. Get real folks. I just got out of the store after nearly and hour and a half. I spent most of that time simply talking to John. By simply asking questions, I learned all kinds of things about him, the store, and his wife. Maybe the negative reviewers need to learn people skills and how to talk to folks other than themselves. As for the records....WOW! Orderly, quality stuff. No junk bins or 4 for a $1 stuff. Good solid records. No better way to put it. This place leaves everyone else behind. I came home and questioned my entire record collecting existence. I've already ordered and new needle for my turn table and a cleaning kit. I'm going to rework my collection too. His store is how I'd want my collection to be. Haters will hate but there's no need for John to lower himself and his store because some folks don't know their ABCs or how to talk to people. Stopped by this record store while I was in town. I can't say enough about this place. The owner, John, met me soon after I entered the store and showed me around. He explained how his store was organized and his cataloging system. I could tell right away that he was very meticulous about the care and quality of his craft which gave me the confidence in knowing that if I purchased something from his store that I would be getting quality records. If you are one of those collectors hoping to experience the joy of getting a sought-after record for a "deal," much like you would at a garage sale, this place isn't for you. But, if you are looking for a place whose owner cares deeply about the craft of grading and selling quality vinyl records, this is the place to go. You will know exactly what you are getting and will pay market price for it. However, since his store's inventory isn't posted on any sites, you will definitely find a lot of gems at market rate that you can't find anywhere else. Given the rarity of some of the finds at this place, the "deal" you may stumble across is finding that long sought-after record in great condition at a market rate. Also, I like the fact that none of the records in his inventory are recent reissues and are largely original or older generation pressings. I live on the other side of the country and I wish a store like this was situated near me. Probably a good thing because I would likely go here every weekend and blow most of my salary on his records as a result. I ended up spending quite a bit of money here to purchase several hard to find Beatles records (early 1960s), Led Zeppelin, and others that I couldn't find anywhere else in such great condition. The inventory is massive. It must have taken him decades to clean, grade, and organize his records the way he did. Moreover, not only are the records in great condition, but the sleeves are in great shape too for those that care about the quality of the album art. It takes a very dedicated person to have the patience and focus to take such great care to methodically and meticulously grade, package, and organize the inventory of this place. There are a lot of negative reviews on here so I was wary at first of stopping by. I have to say though, that my visit was very positive. Everything is in meticulous order and the owner has a specific organization system that is easy to follow. He was very nice and helpful.... even pointing out things that I might like based on sections I was looking in. Very wide selection and everything is rated on a very good and up scale. Lots of research involved that is clearly labeled on every record (ex. 1st edition, 1977, stereo) Definitely a place to stop by if you are a collector or just love records! read more

Very disappointed. Should have known that not being allowed to look at the record ("so the grade as noted stays the same") was a red flag. Two very specific (and almost fraudulent) issues I have: 1) a "1976 First Pressing" album per the hand written label turned out to be a "1980 Reissue" per the run out matrix and 2) side one of another album had been "treated" to look newer (VG+). There is a definite hard shellac-like film on the album (old trick to freshen up vinyl). I played the first track for just a second (so as not to damage my cartridge) and there is a definite under-lying hiss in the back ground from the film. The owner was hard pitching "sealed" albums. the number one thing to know about this store is that the guy who runs the place is an intense - and i mean intense - record nerd. everything is meticulously organized, not just by artist, but also by release date and vinyl condition grade. this is the kind of record nerd who scoffs at reissues, doesn't give a shit about anything that came out in the past decade (at least), and is generally content to hang out all day with his wife and his records (and i'm not 100% sure that wife and records are in the correct order). so, if you're not an intense record nerd, here are some things you should know: 1. record nerds are not normal people. 2. don't fuck with a record nerd's organizational system. 3. when in the presence of a record nerd, handle every record as if it is the most delicate flower. i am not surprised that people have posted some negative reviews of this place. i, however, am a total record nerd, so i loved it. it wasn't the most amazing record store of all time, but it's a good place. most of the stock is 50s-80s. don't expect to find anything released in the past 15ish years unless it's a dj single. and yes, most of this stuff is marked up, but if you actually collect records you know that a lot of the prices could be worse. another thing you know if you actually collect records: if you think something is overpriced, don't buy it. if you think you'll be able to get another copy somewhere else, get another copy somewhere else. read more

Then as I'm flipping through a few overpriced records the guy rudely tells me not to break his cardboard band dividers. Firstly, I wasn't going to break it. Okay, so I just hate to do this and hurt the small independent store. However I feel this man needs to get with the times. I had driven by a few times before when we would visit Greensboro. I decided to stop in yesterday and look around. At first I thought this was goingto be a great place. Then it all started as I was looking flipping through the bins as the cds. The owener and I started talking and he noticed the music that I had collected in my hands. He then suggested I may want some cd he had in the back stash( the rare stuff) so he brings some out of the back. Really $99 for a USED cd. He had several that were marked this way. I todl him that I had just bought the same ones of Amazon or Ebay for $8 he looked a little peeved at me. I then asked him how he came up with his pricing, he said he and his wife searced the internet to see what they are going for. Wow man, you are SO SO OFF then are the "MARKUP" on items. So I had a few cds in had ranging from $9 used up to $25 used, yes I know that is still high but it was a promo copy of one that I really wanted. So I had about $120 of cds in my hand and I do spend that much often. So I asked him if he had a listening station so I coudl just hear hamples of a few( keep in mind that these are all open and used cds) He said that they did not have a listening station, ai expressed to him that I was just a little worried about spending that much $$$ on something that I have not even had a chacne to listen to. He said that it was to much work to open get the cd would of the plastic folder behind the counter and let a person listen to since it was just he and his wife. Uh sir it was just me and another elderly gentleman in the store on a saturday afternoon. I would thik that with the amount of money I was gong to spend you coudl have helped me on the 3 i asked for?? Anyway I said I would not get them and only bought 2 cds and he was a little upset since he thought he was going to have a nice sell, but really the customer service and constant hawking over customers is not relaxing and then he woudl follow behind me to make sure I didn't mess his order or placement of items up. DO NOT.... I mean DO NOT visit this store. Allow me to give some justification for my strong opinion. I just left this store 10 minutes ago because I was basically asked to leave. I was there with a friend of mine who happens to have an intellectual disability. Immediately after we walked in the owner of the store rushed over to intercept us before we even had a chance to look at one single record. The owner was extremely judgmental, unprofessional, ignorant, and discriminatory. I was blown away when he asked us to just leave because he was so worried that an individual with an intelectual disability could not properly handle the records. Little does this man know, Jeff (my friend) is a record collector and knows exactly how to handle delicate records. I strongly recommend that you take your business elsewhere unless you are looking for a place that discriminates people before they get a chance to introduce themselves. ENOUGH SAID! read more

BEWARE! My aunt took about 400 albums to sell, and was told they only wanted about $60 worth. When she went back to pick up the unwanted albums, they'd mysteriously been "lost." She never got them back. If you shop here, be aware that you could be buying what is basically a stolen item. read more

I was in there for a couple of hours yesterday. In talking to the owner he had told me that there were more records underneath the shelves throughout the entire store so his inventory was actually double. At first he seemed like a nice guy, but turned out to be an uptight, rude, typical record guy. When I lifted the curtain to see what was under there he VERY RUDELY yelled out "if I wanted you to look under there it wouldn't be covered with a curtain". It was a simple mistake on my part met with an uncalled for response to a customer that was getting ready to spend $100 in his shop. Normally I would have just left immediately but I was buying a couple of records for a friend. So instead I cut my visit short and went to pay for the records I already had. After his wife rang me up he went through the records I had purchased a couple of times like I had pulled something over on him. He even asked where I had gotten one of them (the answer was out of the bin). If you're looking for goldmine style prices and want to get treated like crap while spending lots of money I highly recommend this place. Personally, I'll never go back. read more

i have been visiting this store for 13 years when I visited gso from the uk. When I walked in all those years ago, I knew instantly it was no ordinary 'second hand record shop'. but a serious collectors treasure trove. Initially i was taken a back with Johns customer relations too, but then you realise he is a serious collector who sells records and the shop is his collection and all he wants is for you to treat it with the respect you would of any collectors passion. you then realise this is what makes sure every bit of vinyl is exactly what is says. near perfect. he would never sell a bad record. As I said to a customer once. if he only has one copy and it is -vg,then it is still pretty good and the chances of you finding another as good any time soon is probably slim. This is a shop for serious collectors and anyone looking for a "bargain" should go else where to garage sales etc. I happily spend hours in this shop and have never come away with a record I was disappointed with and John has separated me from many hundreds of Dollars over the years. I have found stuff I have NEVER even seen elsewhere. He also has a couple of things he refuses to sell to me which, as I say, reiterates he is a collector who sell records.
