Here's one thing people don't really tell you when you embark on the many-headed Hydra of a task known as planning your wedding: Weddings really aren't that unique. Heck, love is one of the most universal things anyone can agree on. But a wedding is a ritual, no matter how many quirks you toss in. Yes, the people who are involved in them are one of a kind individuals, and they have the right to plan a wedding as unconventional and tradition-bucking as they are. Whether the bride sports dreadlocks and hula hoops down the aisle or walks, flanked by her parents, in a more somber fashion under the weight of a crown, the whole shabang involves at least two people who call upon their friends, communities, and all the powers seen and unseen to recognize and honor their union. So no matter how many bagpipe processions or Velveteen Rabbit readings or chicken dances you put into the event, by definition, the wedding itself won't be much of a snowflake. That leaves the wedding photographer with an odd task. Take my wedding photographers, Stephen and Emily, from Remembrance Photography as an example. Stephen, the main guy behind the cameras and the business, has been shooting weddings for over two decades. You'd have to ask him directly for confirmation on this, but my guess would be he's seen a lot of the same things in that huge amount of time. And Stephen is not alone in that regard. I did loads of research on the hunt for a wedding photographer. In the months I spent scrolling through photographers' sites, the office mates who happened by my computer probably wondered if I ever did the job I was paid to be at the computer for. And after the umpteenth pics of bridesmaids busily primping, the footwear of the happy couple, and the smiles that accompany the first time the people getting married see each other, I really began to wonder what difference it would make. Here's one thing I only learned after the wedding had ended, in the weeks that followed as we said goodbye to the last of the out-of-town family members, ripped through the paper on our presents, and stared in awe at the images we received back from Remembrance: While there may be little unique about having a wedding or getting married, the right photographer shows you why going through it all was meaningful and deeply personal to you. Did Remembrance Photography accomplish this? There's photos of people, our people, hugging and tearing up and dancing. There was lots of dancing. There's pictures of the bridal super sisters and friends as well as my mom and me getting ready. There's a shot of my friend Mel carefully securing the earrings on me that she loaned me for the event. There's a shot of my mom displaying my dress for the camera, the one she found with me seven months before. There's shots of Crime Partner's Converse kicks and the gray sandals I wore. There's photos, many of them, of the look on his face when we met up before the ceremony started. If it were possible, I'd have all those images tattooed directly onto my brain, especially the last one. But since that's not a real thing, I'm so glad we worked with Stephen and Emily. They both responded well to the temperaments of the members of our wedding parties, especially Emily. They worked with the needs of the people in the wedding, from the morning Crime Partner and I first met Stephen at his office to the afternoon we met him at the park. They actively posed us for portraits but, aside from those, mostly blended in and let their cameras do the heavy lifting. Turns out, I didn't break any molds with my wedding photos. That doesn't mean our pictures or our wedding could be considered mundane or bland at all. Our photographers captured so many details of the day, and as the photographic record shows, nearly all of those details were happy and sweet and quite possibly the cutest we've ever been in front of company.
