I have gone to this party store for years for my son's birthday and other parties, but I will not be going back after today. Even though it is pricier than bigger chain party stores, I always loved supporting them because they are local. Unfortunately, I went in 8 months pregnant and had a horrible experience. I made a purchase and asked to use the bathroom as it felt very urgent at this phase of my pregnancy. The woman working told me they did not have one. I asked if she could make an exception as it was feeling like a medical emergency and she said she couldn't let me use it but directed me to a coffee shop that was 3 blocks away. This is my second pregnancy and through both pregnancies, I have not been denied a bathroom by businesses when one is available, so this was really shocking and disappointing, especially when it is a family party shop. I hope they can reconsider this policy, but I don't want to continue suppporting this place in the meantime. read more

Of all the things my youngest son could have asked for for his birthday, he wanted...a disco ball. I had questions. The first question, "WHY the hell does he want a disco ball?", was immediately followed up with..."WHERE the hell am I going to get a disco ball?!" Fortunately, Lippman's jumped immediately to mind. If anyone was going to come through with a random, off-season party accessory, it would be Lippman's. And you know what? I was correct. Comically correct, actually. Not only did they have several disco balls (and motors!) in various sizes, ranging from Christmas ornament to Death Star, some of which *were sold out*, they literally had a hand-written list of disco ball sizes and prices taped to their register. The hell? Did I somehow wander into a time portal and end up back in the 1970s? Are there that many people looking for disco balls, on a regular basis?! As an added bonus, Lippman's offers far more than just disco balls. It's a full service, year round party warehouse, selling everything from costumes and wigs, accessories, props, toys, party favors and paraphernalia, decorations, and balooons, Balloons, BALLOONS! It's like a year round Spirit Halloween, without the slightly melancholy feeling of trudging through the gutted husk of another business, dodging swarms of children rubbing their filthy hands and faces on every mask and prop within line of sight. Oh, and their employees are competent, friendly and actually helpful. Occasionally, Lippman's can feel a bit empty, usually in the wake of a major party holiday (Christmas, New Years, Independence Day, Halloween, etc), as they restock and prepare for the next major event. But in all of my visits here, I have never left without whatever item I came for, or at the very least, a helpful suggestion on where to find it. So the next time your five year old hits you with a bizarre request for his birthday, regardless of the season, Lippman's has your back. We may be living in Clown World these days, but at least I know where to buy the uniform. read more

Wandered in after going to Cargo across the street. Never knew this place existed! The purple octopus ballon out front captured my attention! This store has party supplies - dishes, napkins, banners, piñatas, party favors, balloons, tablecloths, serving pieces - for any occasion or themed event, whether that's a kids birthday party, graduation, bachelorette party, sweet 16, the Big 50, engagement, anniversary, retirement...the list goes on and on. They also have tons of Halloween costumes for all ages and even a fake beard and mustache area! Lots of holiday decor too - St. Patrick's Day, Valentines Day, July 4th. You get the drift. When I as there, a life size Easter-bunny statue was available for anyone needing one! Will definitely remember this place the next time I need party supplies for a theme event. read more

I remember meeting Mr. Liippman when I visited his store, and my son was about two or three years old. Mr. Lippman wandered around the store and gave my son little gifts. He also talked about getting packages of salmon and whitefish delivered to him from New York. He was a sweet mann enjoyed owning the shop and made us happy. Years later I went to Lipman's to buy a huge balloon as the basis of my daughters Veronica, the blueberry costume. So any business that has been around for so many years and help me in so many situations is really deserving of praise. everything is well organized. The staff is helpful and knows where to find things and it's a lot of fun. The only negative is that the parking isn't great because of the location, but that's how it is these days in Portland. Lipman's is a real local gem they are great for Pride merch too which was kind of shocked to see you go on display after many many years of patronage. I was happy to see that development. read more

I stopped by today for some surprise celebration supplies for my husband who has just finished his degree. While they didn't have any graduation specific stock (which is logical for January) they did point me to some festive goods to bring home. The staff was friendly and helpful and filled some festive balloons on the spot for me. This seems like a fun place to shop for party supplies and costumes and it's great to support a local business instead of a chain. Also highly recommend subbing a graduation crown instead of a cap for any of your scholarly loved ones. read more

Pros: lots of costume and accessory options for Halloween and other themed party events. Cons: -overpriced - found candles at Freddy's for 1/3 the price. -customer service particularly the balloon salesperson. I attempted to buy numbered balloons and before I could finish my question she interrupts and curtly tells me to walk over to some back wall to get them. I walked away having decided I won't be giving this place anymore business than I have to (had to buy a few things for a bday party that day). She proceeded to find me at the register and asks if I found what I was looking for and I gave her my honest answer that her rude response made me no longer interested in buying the balloons. She apologized and said she was in the middle of an email and offered a discount on balloons. Kudos to her for trying to fix the problem on the spot and being honest, but answering an email doesn't seem like a reasonable excuse for not helping customers in nice way. read more

Their helium balloon offerings are the best in Portland and my toddler loves to pal around to look at their small bins of toys. I rarely write reviews. But I experienced such amazing customer service yesterday that I feel like I have to. I went in planning to spend $100-$200 bucks. I have been really stressed and all over the place planning a Medieval times event for 30+ kids.. I wanted some help because I had a lot to gather and not much time.. (I had never been in there before.) They had such an amazing selection and this employee named Stefanie (she had teal hair) went above and beyond to assist me! She was friendly, welcoming and wanted to make sure I was really taken care of. Her help was definitely what I'd call great customer service skills!!. She listened to all my needs, I talked a lot describing tons of details. She assisted me counting prizes and putting them in bags. Was a great multi tasker that kept us on track. She assisted me all over the store collecting things that would work for the event. I ended up spending over $500 & basically finding EVERYTHING that I needed for the party at just this one store!! I KNOW I wouldn't have stayed in there that long or spent that much without Stephanie's help. She said she was newer there but I feel she's just a natural ppl person. I felt comfortable with her & it was an awesome experience. Stephanie with the teal hair is def a keeper. P.S. All of the other employees that I encountered seemed friendly and helpful as well.. Yayyyy party supplies! I got a disco ball, motor and sparkly eyelashes here for New Year's, and will likely be back soon for other random party-supply runs. Specifically, I really need a spotlight for that disco ball. Although I wasn't in the market for most of their specialty sections, I really enjoyed them - they had stuff for President's Day, fercrissake. I don't know anyone that has President's Day parties, but if you do, this it the place to send them. They had an impressive selection of cardboard cutouts, every balloon shape you could imagine, and rotating bins full of superballs and other evocative-of-childhood gadgets. Party stuff! I love thee! Lippman is a fantastic place for just about any party related item you need, especially if your number one personal attribute is procrastination. I'm really, really good at that. They have all the wigs you'd need, a bevy of costumes for Halloween (and also perfect for off-season costume parties) and costume makeup. Then there's party decorations/goodies/balloons/random assortment of whatever. Price wise it's...pricey, but you pay for convenience (or in my case laziness). My latest favorite coup was getting three men turning 30 (or older) birthday sashes - my favorite being "Sweet 16" for a birthday weekend getaway. The staff is super polite and fun. I stopped by on Sunday only to find them closed (which explained why I secured a primo parking spot). I came back on Wednesday after work. Within seconds of walking in, the employee at the counter greeted me with, "Just a friendly reminder that we're closing in 20 minutes," which instantly prepared me for some pretty dismal customer service. Turns out I was wrong. Though reminding a customer a store is closing in 20 minutes as a means of welcoming them is pretty tacky, the service here turned out to be stellar. They didn't have the costume component I was looking for on the sales floor but the employee who assisted me recalled having seen it in their basement inventory. He asked when I needed it by (it's for the Starlight Run) and promised to call me if he could locate it this week. Rad. Because they have such a vast selection of costumes and accessories, I did manage to get the face mask component I needed and was thrilled with the $2 price tag. I'd done some online pricing before stopping in and Lippman's was a bargain. Their pricing generally seems extremely reasonable, especially when you consider the potential markup for having costumes when nobody else does (see: every month but October). Pro Tip: The Hair of the Dog taproom is right across the street; finishing up your costume shopping is as good a reason as any to stop in and have a celebratory pint. read more

Liven up the party with all the trinkets you can get from the store. Heck, browse around and you will not go empty handed. You will find something that's either nostalgic or interestingly juvenile yet you know you gotsta have it as it is cheap. Speaking of cheap, the balloons are not that cheap compared to the other chain stores. Lippman has all the things you need which you don't need but you didn't know you didn't need, but you are going to get anyway. There are plenty of party favors, helium balloons, decorations, toys, costumes and stickers. All kinds of themes from seasonal holidays to Oregon sports teams. They have all the mylar alphabet balloons, rubber balloons. Balloons are perishable, they leak, so since they are not open on Sunday, plan around that. Best of all, most of it is very inexpensive, unlike certain toy stores, but those those fancy toy stores can have some cool stickers. The only reason I didn't give five stars is the pricing. I have seen the party goods cheaper. So if you want the paper plates and napkins maybe hold off from these guys. Needed mylar balloons for a wedding shower, Lippman's was close-by and got good reviews so drove over. Easy to get to off the freeway. Glad they have a few dedicated parking spots, made it easy to get in and out. The staff greeted me as soon as I walked in the door and happily showed me their selection, which is very extensive. I browsed through them and selected three. One thing they could improve would be to make it more obvious how much they cost - I really didn't know how much they were going to be until I checked out. You basically take your packaged balloons over to the inflation station where they blow they up with helium, attach the ribbons, etc. While doing that you get a little slip of paper showing the prices of what you bought which you take to the cashier to check out and pay. Very time efficient and allowed me to get in and out quickly. I would definitely go back if I need more party supplies. Not an upscale ambiance, in an old building, but great products and service. read more

They don't have EVERYTHING I could possibly need or want, but they did have an awesome selection of 260s for a reasonable rate. They've got some nice costume accessories, and I'll bet they get more full costumes closer to Halloween. I saw a lot of Elvis cardboard stand-ups, but no jumpsuits - Alas. Generally I'm a big fan. They're by far my favorite party store in town. I throw a ridiculous number of themed events for both work and in my personal life, and The Lippman Company usually has most everything I could need for both costumes and decor. I like that they have a just crazy extensive inventory of costumes and wigs year round, not just for halloween. You can try on any of the wigs, so long as you take the sample box to the desk and let the clerks help you. I'm not sure about the policy for trying on costumes, but I bet they'd be willing to work with you! For decor, they have a general selection for things like birthdays, retirements, and general theme parties. Then they also have a huge rotating section that can be anything from Mardi Gras to St Patricks Day to Gay Pride to 4th of July to Thanksgiving. Then there's also the back corner, which is year-round randomness, just in case you want to throw a tiki party in February. The balloon room is handy, if you need balloons. Lots of options, and they'll inflate them for you. Don't want to pay the surcharge? they'll rent you a helium tank. GENERALLY the staff is super friendly. I'd say 8 out of 10 visits have been really positive in this regard, with staff members not only helping me find exactly what I need but also helping me come up with ideas while holding up friendly conversation. Unfortunately on rare occasion you do have to deal with aloof, unpleasant people who seem to be shocked that they have to assist you, even though they're standing behind the counter. I guess no place is perfect? Parking can be tight, as it is in this entire neighborhood. They do, however, have a few dedicated spots in a parking lot just around the corner. They take costumes and parties here seriously, man. If you want Halloween fun year-'round, this is definitely the place to be. I mean, they had a wall full of fake mustaches, for crying out loud! And a nook dedicated solely to balloons. Aisles full of one-size-fits-all costuming...you can be a sexy pirate or a sexy nurse. Or a sexy vampire. It's also an excellent place to get a whole bunch of 50 cent novelty trinkets that take your costume from fun to perfection. But what impressed me most about this place wasn't what they had. It was what they didn't have. Which was a pig nose. Apparently they've been uber popular lately because of the movie Penelope with Christina Ricci. One girl actually called two different non-affiliated costume and toy shops to see if they had any before we left the place. And then they were even willing to cut up a full-on pig mask just for the nose. I stopped that one before the deal was sealed because the mask was just scary...not the vibe I was going for. Man, I wish I'd known about this place around Halloween. I would have had a decent costume--instead of the same old, tired "fat guy with beard" costume that I wear every year. This is a nice party supply store. I like the way they have stuff sectioned off into themes: tiki, gothic, cowboy, pirate, etc. Lots of paper plates, napkins, and cheapo party favors. Hey! Need a gross of those paddle ball gizmos? How about some miniature rubber chickens or a set of googlie eyes?They have 'em at Lippman! I'm assuming they change up some of the merchandise based on the season. They had a ton of Mardi Gras and Oscar party accoutrement out on the floor when I was in the store yesterday.
