John Hunt Morgan's Raiders arrived in Elizabethtown on December 27, 1862, appearing on the brow of the hill that is now the City Cemetery. The main objective of the Christmas Raid was to burn two huge Louisville and Nashville Railroad trestles at Muldraugh Hill north of the town. By destroying the trestles, Morgan hoped to relive pressure on Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg's Army in Tennessee by cutting the flow of supplies to Union Gen. William S. Rosecrans' army. Before moving on Muldraugh Hill, Morgan wanted to neutralize the Union force in Elizabethtown. The Confederates placed artillery on the hill and demanded the surrender of the Union garrison. They refused and Morgan's artillery opened fire. The bombardment lasted twenty minutes; 107 rounds were fired upon the buildings in the town killing and wounding several of the soldiers who had taken refuge there." Interesting history. I stopped by Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown and didn't attend a service, but I…read morespent some time reading the outdoor signage and learning about its historical significance. It's impressive to see a church with roots going back to the late 1700s, and it's considered the oldest Baptist church in Kentucky. The historical markers do a good job of explaining the church's early beginnings and its importance in the settlement of the region. Even just passing by, you can get a sense of how long this congregation has been part of the community's history. The grounds are well-kept and the modern campus contrasts interestingly with the deep historical roots of the church. It makes for a quick but meaningful stop if you're interested in local history.

The marker reads, "The oldest continuing Baptist congregation west of Allegheny Mts., organized June 17, 1781, near Hynes Station. Preceded by log structures, this edifice completed, 1834, by John Y. Hill. Sold to First Baptist Church, 1897, and services held until 1974, except when USA soldiers used building as hospital, 1865. Listed on National Register of Historic Places, 1974." It is marker number 1621 and it was erected in 1977 by the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Transportation. The historical society sign on the sidewalk is what originally drew my attention to Thai old one classroom school house. I honestly thought it was just a shed for the grave yard landscaper or something. The door and windows are deadlocked with a bolt which I understand but is also Unfortunate. I would of loved to take a peep inside to see if it had been preserved. Ive ran into Similar extremely old school houses that was setup that way and it's always a cool find. Overall a nice and unexpected little hidden gym in historic downtown Bardstown. Maybe I can find out if they ever open it up so I can check out the inside. Either that or my original gut feeling that it holds lawnmowers and things for the grave yard could be true. But hopefully it's restored.

Bardstown welcome center also known as the former city hall of the city is one of my favorite…read morebuildings to look by and check out in the entire state of Kentucky. It sits beautifully and gigantically on the middle of a roundabout with several shoppes and places to eat surrounding this. Even as a kid when visiting my old Kentucky home the thing I remembered most was the "big building that had a circle around it". Just makes it shout that it's important. Note city halls should do that. Defiantly hard to miss. From what I could gather this mainly serves as the welcoming center now but still has some branches of government work held here. The outside is beautiful with plenty of places to sit and a couple cool monuments to Bardstown heroes and famous alumni. Overall I still love driving by or around this building. Very cool site to see and I look how I can go inside it now that it's a visitors center. Cool piece of Kentucky history and architecture here.

The area is easy to navigate and each station is labeled to make sure customers experience as less confusion as possible. The vehicle registration line is amply staffed to keep the line moving smoothly. There are also signs posted giving individuals the opportunity to email a digital copy of their insurance verification to speed up the process before you even get to a staff member. You have the ability to write checks, pay in cash or by credit/debit card for a fee. The employees have always been professional, personable and polite when I have renewed my registration each year. It took me approximately 6 minutes to complete my transaction!

Very cool and nice tribute to the hero's that served on those troubling times. Always great to see these honors and it's a very simple yet beautiful memorial that's in a very popular spot that is sure to attract a lot of eyes. Which is deserving for these heroes to be remembered and seen.
