I left my previous dentist due to bad customer service related to billing. I am so pleased with my switch to RFD. Perhaps it's just the comparison to my previous dentist's office (in a dilapidated office park with no natural light), but RFD felt downright luxurious. The televisions at your chair are such a lovely touch and really help time fly during a cleaning. There are also wall-to-wall windows which is nice to have in a healthcare setting (they're covered with blinds, but still provide nice light). Both my hygienist and dentist were very kind, took their time with me, and made me feel welcomed. The dentist herself made sure my questions were addressed, talked to me about options for things, and was not pushy--as has been mentioned by other reviewers! But perhaps the best part is that I got an itemized list of pricing for future services at time of checkout. That is rare to find in healthcare and it helped me understand whether I could afford the recommended treatments. Pricing transparency in healthcare is desperately needed and I just wish everyone provided this service. I hope I can continue visiting RFD for years to come! Why do dentists get so money hungry ? This happened a while ago but could not leave my original stellar review. They sent me a letter saying they no longer wanted me at their practice for defaulting on a ...... $30 coinsurance payment. I had moved. Gone for 2 years (husband switched jobs) never received billing. Their prices for their services are overpriced, so much so that their was a balance due for a routine cleaning, because the insurance would only allow for a certain amount of payout for a routine cleaning. Also Dr. V kept referring me to one of his oral surgeon buddies (Dr. Reebey) to have my wisdom teeth removed. These teeth were not decayed or hurting me in anyway. The x-ray did not show any signs of concern. A change of insurance found me at Renaissance Family Dentistry and in the hands of Dr. Vidyarthi yesterday. This is Part II of the saga (see also my review of the practice). Suman is a pretty charismatic dentist. We made some small-talk and then got down to business. I think this may be the first time ever I've been instructed to actually stick out my tongue and say "aah" while at the dentist. I was also asked to point my tongue in all sorts of directions and then do the same with my jaw. The dentist also applied a cold pack to various spots on my teeth and asked me to raise my hand when I could feel the cold. Generally, I felt like a science experiment. But afterward, he pointed out things on my xray and gave me a mirror to demo what he was noticing: a misaligned bite that's causing my teeth to wear, and a tooth he suspects may require a root canal. This is why people hate going to the dentist. But I appreciate how thorough he was. He even remembered my husband had to have a root canal about a year ago, and that he had a good experience with the recommended endodontist. The dentist applied a swab of vaseline to my lips partway through the appointment. If only there were also ways to relieve lockjaw from the bite guard and sinus issues from being reclined for so long. Again: this is why people hate going to do the dentist. I can say that he was prudent about asking me to raise a hand if I felt pain at any time. I know that's a big fear for some people and I think it's great they acknowledge that. He personally handled my cleaning, which was a first for me and made me feel like my teeth got the royal treatment! Bottom line: they push unnecessary procedures to make money and try to nickel and dime you. Look elsewhere! At every cleaning visit, I worried they were pushing procedures I wasn't sure I needed, like recommending I replace some fillings because "the edges weren't smooth." I never took them up on any of the procedure beyond routine cleanings until they claimed I had a cavity. So I booked an appointment to have the cavity filled, but I was told I couldn't make it until I paid an outstanding fee for cancelling an appointment without enough notice. When I inquired about this unexpected fee, I learned I was charged it when I had the flu, and I called and left a message on a Friday (when the office is closed and no one can take the call) to cancel a Monday morning routine checkup appointment. When I complained that the charge seemed unreasonable given the circumstances, they told me I was welcome to take my business elsewhere. So I did, and my new dentist informed me that the cavity I was supposed to have filled wasn't actually a cavity and didn't need to be addressed at that time. I'm glad I kept my ridiculous cancellation fee and spared myself a filling I didn't need. read more

I've been going to RFD for about 4 years and I honestly don't have many complaints at all. It's located off Fayetteville Road and Geneva Drive. Parking is never an issue, but I always try to allow extra time because the complex itself is a tidge confusing to me- all the buildings look the same. Definitely got a little turned around trying to find my car after the appointment today lol. The office lobby area is neat and welcoming, with tea/water, magazines, and a tv. The receptionists are really friendly, and any time I call they're usually helpful in getting appointments scheduled and insurance/billing questions answered. Once or twice I've been able to come in for a last minute appointment but usually they're booked so I always schedule cleanings ahead of time. You should know they're closed on Fridays. The hygienists are pleasant and highly competent. Today I went in for a cleaning and saw Ashley. She was gentle with my cleaning but also did a really thorough job. Afterwards I shared some concerns with her and she offered a number of suggestions to help with some issues I had. I appreciated being able to talk through everything with her. I've seen both dentists in the office and especially liked Dr. Vivek- but I prefer female doctors in general. Dr. Suman is great too. Whenever I've had procedures done I never felt rushed or pressured. I also appreciate how clean everything in the office is, and having TVs on the ceiling for patients. I will say that there was a procedure that Dr. Suman suggested (maybe re-doing a sealant? Can't quite remember), and I wasn't ready to have it done. I ended up moving back to Charlotte for a short period and saw our family dentist for a check-up...and he said my teeth looked fine. No suggestions for needed procedures. Now, this could've been an oversight on my family dentist's part, or perhaps Dr. Suman was being really proactive in catching problem spots early. Renaissance Family Dentistry is the best dental office I've been to since moving to Durham 3 years ago. All of the staff has been very helpful and kind. They are honest about their prices and you are informed before you come into the office for your appointment. Jamie was so helpful and able to get me in quickly for an initial exam, and then a follow up appointment was set readily for crown work. I have seen each dentist and they both were excellent about communicating to me what they were seeing and doing during the examinations. Rarely do you have dentists that are thorough, patient, professional, and take their time with their patients. Dr. Suman was wonderful during the initial exam, discussion of my affected tooth, and explained each step during my appointment for a crown. I can't thank him enough! I will definitely recommend Renaissance to all of my friends and family. read more

I was actually shocked by all the great reviews! I went here because of the great reviews, and, aside from itemized price lists and great dental staff, the dentist was horrible! Dr. Suman was rude, brusque, and demeaning. It took me a second to figure out why. This guy couldn't even smile. He did not try to charge me for procedures he didn't feel I needed, but when discussing with him the science of the procedure he just was short and did not want to hear anything other than he was right. Although I have full coverage medical insurance, I may have not had dental as I may have presumed it was included. Regardless it is the dentist, and for a check up and new place, it wasn't important to me as I had no problem paying "out of pocket." Apparently if you look younger and don't carry dental insurance you are scum to this dentist. All he wanted to talk about was money! He was short with me at all times, even when I asked if I could have all the procedures I needed done. He spoke to me like a child, I am 30! "Since you don't have insurance, let's worry about your payment first." I was appalled. I mean, I do understand, how people can be concerned about someone without insurance, but for goodness sakes, that doesn't mean treat someone as if they are beneath you! I have never been treated this way, as if insurance was the end all be all. Hello, people still have money to pay for services they want! I went to Cornell for grad school and work as a biomedical engineer research scientist, I am more than well - to -do! I was really excited to support other Indians, and is one of the reason I chose this place. However, I will have to look elsewhere because the attitude and demeanor of the dentist was disgusting! If you have dental insurance upfront then he probably is a great dentist, but as I have seen his character, I wouldn't recommend this place. I am not sure I could sit under some one for an hour with such a low character! Otherwise, prices were alright, 30 dollars per bitewing, and very reasonable, without insurance. I started going to Renaissance Family Dentistry because they were a preferred provider in my dental insurance plan (2006 I think). I have stayed with them even now that my dental insurance coverage has been dropped. I would describe the practice as clean, friendly, efficient and (most importantly to a needle-phobe like myself) respectful to patients. My favorite part of this office is Dr Suman. He is always willing to explain why procedures need to be done, why a particular timeline of treatment is appropriate and how to best care for one's mouth in the future. Dr Suman did some fillings on me and was so considerate about my fear of needles. (I know it's a silly fear but it's real and he didn't react like I was crazy when I told him.) He offered me the nitrous oxide and then he and his assistant were very careful to keep the needles out of my line of sight. I felt very well taken care of and, best of all, I haven't had any problems with those fillings in the past three years. read more

I've been going to Renaissance Family Dentistry for about 2 years now. Dr. Suman Vidyarthi is an excellent dentist -- very friendly and attentive (see my review of Suman Vidyarthi, DDS for more information). I would also say the same about the dental hygienists. I've gone about every 6 months for a cleaning and I've never had any problems. Insurance claims have always been handled promptly. There was a time when I had to file claims myself and the office staff helped me get the necessary documentation. Appointments have always been on time (perhaps because I schedule my appointments first thing in the morning). These visits are actually a bit relaxing because I'm not a morning person and I'm half-asleep while my teeth are being cleaned. There's also a TV on the ceiling to distract you while the procedure is being done (first time I've seen this and it's very cool). Equipment in the office seems modern. X-rays are produced quickly. Tools and hands seem to be kept clean as you'd expect. If you have any doubts about your current dentist or if you need a dentist in the Durham area then I'd suggest making an appointment at Renaissance Family Dentistry. read more

I can't say enough go things about my experience at Renaissance Family Dentistry . I waited a while to make an appointment and was extremely anxious. My husband always spoke highly of his experiences at this dentist office, so I finally made my appointment. Everyone made me feel comfortable as soon as I walked in the doors. This was quite a big step up from the family dentist in my hometown. Renaissance has a TV in the waiting room and a TV in front of you and above you while you get your teeth cleaned. They also used something called a computer, which I'm pretty sure my old place did not use. I was a little shocked when I sat down and the hygenist took like 5 xrays of me. I was not thrilled about getting blasted with x-rays but they insisted. The cleaning was a little more painful than what I'm used to but it was bearable for myself. The dentist came by to check my teeth before I left and thoroughly looked at every single tooth. I'm so used to the dentist looking at my teeth for like 15 seconds but he checked everything. This was actually the most painful part b/c he kept jabbing his damn pick into my gums. I had to wave my hand b/c the pain was almost too much. He found several problems that my old dentist had never even mentioned. When he discussed possible procedures he did not pressure me at all and said he would only monitor it for now. MetLife covered my entire vist--thank god--but the repairs I may have to get will cost a little. This is a nice place but it'll cost you a pretty penny if you ain't got any dental insurance. Btw the office is INSIDE the courtyard area on the northeast side. I drove all the way around the building and didn't see it. read more

Two words: sad and pathetic. Short story: If you need your teeth cleaned, polished or a _simple_ filling these folks _might_ be OK. But if there is ANYTHING complex about your dental needs they will examine you for two hours and refer you to other dental specialists (probably not in your insurance network because they don't care to check that out). I was told they base their referrals on 'their relationship with the referred to dental specialist). That's nice for them but not so nice for the patient if they end up paying for something out of pocket needlessly. Rest of story: They were kind enough to agree to see my partner with an infected rear molar and swelling on his right side the size of a large peach. But when the dentist looked at it he essentially admitted pulling the tooth was beyond his skill set, referred him to a dental chain outlet that was not in our insurance network, and did not EVEN bother writing him a perception for antibiotics saying "Well let them do that." When we pulled up to the factory-looking dental chain outlet they referred us to it had thug-looking street people on cell phones camped outside the place and the receptionist handed us a stack of paperwork (about 4 pages front and back) to fill out. I called another dental surgeon I know and got him to call in a perception for antibiotics. He was shocked that was not done before sending us on our way to the other dental outlet. We are having him do the work. My parter's issue was an EMERGENCY. I identified it as such and all they did was waste our time. Because of them he is having to endure the infected tooth another day. Not sure how I feel about the practice. They were very nice and as a new patient, I had to go through the normal x-rays and checking of the teeth. But I maybe spent 5 to 10 minutes with the actual dentist. He did answer the few questions I had but I felt more like my visit was with the dental assistant than with the actual dentist. Perhaps this is what dentistry has become and maybe because I didn't really have any major dental issues, I didn't really need his services. But it just struck me as strange. I am always nervous about finding a new dentist in a new town. I was convinced by the overwhelmingly positive reviews about Renaissance Family Dentistry, and I did not come away disappointed. My first cleaning was quick and easy, and everyone was professional and very thorough. My gums were a little sore but that's probably my fault for not flossing enough. ;-) What has impressed me most so far is the restorative work Dr. Suman did on an old filling that has been giving me trouble for four years. My previous dentist had taken a "watch and wait" approach because he was nervous about going back in and causing more damage. While I appreciated this philosophy at first, it was starting to become painful and I was noticing a lot of problems with food impaction. Dr. Suman seemed confident that he could fix the problem, and he did! He also explained the process step-by-step, which put my mind at ease, and explained ahead of time how I could communicate if I needed them to stop. He was professional and courteous, as was the entire staff. The chairs are very comfortable and the TVs on the walls and ceiling also help in offering a distraction. The office is very clean and warm. I will definitely be back for my next cleaning. It is comforting that I have found a dentist I can trust. read more

I didn't have a local dentist (and it had been...well, more than 6 months, since my last visit) so I needed to find someone. After looking on Yelp I rolled the dice on this place. I really could not have been happier. I'll give you the quick run down. Staff is friendly. Dentists are attentive and listen well. I did not feel rushed or pressured into procedures like at some dentist offices. I was very jet lagged and while they were friendly and happy to chat, in this case they let me just close my eyes and half sleep through the cleaning. The fact that I nearly fell asleep should tell you how good they are at avoiding pain. Really quite top notch. Furthermore, when I expressed interest in other services (that would take the coordination of several other types of doctors - anesthesiologist , oral surgeon, orthodontist) they were more than happy to help me arrange consultations. They also itemized the potential cost for what part they would be involved in, should I choose to have the procedure. Really, really helpful. Any downsides? Not really. The building is a little tricky to find but that's not a big deal at all, especially considering how happy I was with the experience. Overall an excellent experience (how often do you say THAT about going to the dentist?!). I will definitely return. PS - not bad looking dental assistants as well :) read more

We were happy with this practice for almost three years. Then I dared to question Dr. Suman about his suggested treatment plan. I couldn't even express my concerns because he cut me off repeatedly - his chairside manner is just unbelievably abrasive. Like most of you reading this, I'm an educated person, having had varied types of dental work throughout my lifetime. I am not willing to pay a healthcare provider who does not value his patient's point's of view. Yes, he went to dental school, but it is my mouth, and I have to live with it for the remainder of my life. His approach does not lend itself to the most basic premise in any helping profession - listen to your patient. Money, Money, Money is all of this guy's concern. Very pushy on things you don't need. The Male dentist is VERY rude and arrogant. If you come in without insurance, he will focus on finances first. Talks down to you and quite frankly he isn't very proficient in his skill. The dental assistance and office staff are quite lovely though. I wouldn't recommend. The guy doesn't even care about your teeth I don't think. He will argue with you even if you are correct about your dental history. Very pushy. Won't explain anything, so don't ask questions. The thing they're best at is billing. They don't make you feel like anything but a dollar sign. My first appointment was to fixing a filling. However, they wouldn't do it. First I had to get a cleaning and X-rays. They were rude when I questioned about the X-rays. I didn't need them, they just want the money. It took a second appt. weeks later to fix the problem I had. Can't say anything about running late or missed appointments. However, they gave very short notice when they closed for weather. The only reason they have such high reviews: they send emails, have signs, telling customers to review them. I got an appointment last minute via email (which was surprisingly easy). I think they just had a last-minute cancellation because other options were about 10 days out. Front desk staff are friendly and welcoming, and I got in to see my dental hygienist (Ashley) on time. Ashley is kind and cheery and understood my woes with the dreaded x-rays. We got through them fast. After the cleaning (gentle and thorough), I met with Nanditha Vivekananthan, DDS, who carefully explained my particular issues and was patient and responsive to my questions. At the end of my last review I mentioned how they quickly resolved a payment issue that was the result of their practice being dropped (unknowingly by me) from my insurance network. Well, my insurance provider changed and now they are back in my network. I was really excited to go back to them as my dentists, so I called to set up an appointment. I found out I had been blacklisted!! I thought they waived the cots out of the goodness of their hearts, realizing it was a miscommunication. I assumed they took the $90 hit to show great customer service. NOPE! It turns out they were not happy about it at all, and are now refusing to take me back as a patient. That's completely their right, but this seems very petty. If they had told me back at the time of the issue that they disagreed and needed me to pay, then I would have paid. It was only $90, and I am not the kind of person that is going to make a big deal out of it. I made a simple request, and they granted it. Now, they hold that against me. After moving from out of state, I was nervous about finding a new dentist. One of my coworkers suggested Renaissance Family Dentistry, and I'm so glad she did! I've been a patient of theirs for several years now and have had nothing but good experiences here. Both Drs. Vidyarthi and Vivekananthan are friendly, extremely knowledgeable and spend ample time discussing areas of concern and overall tips to maximize my dental health. I've had work done by both dentists here, and they're both great. The office runs on time, the hygienists are friendly and efficient, the dentists clearly explain treatment options and procedures step-by-step, and I was free of pain while the work was done. I'm not particularly fearful of dentists, but I'm physically not able to open my mouth very far without pain. They do a great job of working with my limitations to get the job done. They also are in-network for my dental plan at work (Duke hospital), so my copays are very reasonable. Most importantly, I really trust their treatment recommendations; I don't feel (as I have at other practices) that they're trying to sell me a bunch of unnecessary stuff to boost their own income. As others have stated, this place was just great. It was clean, people greeted me in a friendly manner, and I felt like the whole process was extremely professional, helpful, and fast. Everything you could ask for in a dental office was demonstrated with the utmost care. The cleaning went very well as the last 5 years of dental disrepair vanished from my burdened conscience. None of it cost me anything either because of my benefits. Due to how long it has been since I gave my teeth any attention, I expected grim results. I got lucky and I know it. They even admitted so... 28 yrs old and still never had a cavity? I'll also add that the suggestions to improve how I took care of my teeth were delivered constructively and with understanding by attractive people I had no difficulty looking at. I am a scaredy cat when it comes to doctors and dentists and so when looking for a dentist I knew I needed someone who cared. I'm a teacher and when I found out one of my students' parents was a dentist I decided to try them out. My first visit was very thorough. They made me feel comfortable and everyone was very friendly. Later in the year my permanent retainer on my bottom teeth popped off and they were able to fit me in that day. It was nice not having to find an orthodontist to fix it. I do not recommend Renaissance Family Dentistry at all. I was new to the area and decided to choose Renaissance since it was the closest dentist to me, which was a bad idea. Maybe if I had read all of the negative reviews of this place I would have been saved from having the worst possible dentist visit that I have ever had. The reception staff as well as my dental hygienist who saw me were all nice and courteous so the issue is not with them at all. My issue was with Dr. Nanditha Vivekananthan. When she saw me she insisted my gums were in terrible condition and she recommended scheduling visits every 3 months for cleanings. Not only that but she was convinced that my cleaning could not be completed in 1 visit and that I would have to schedule a follow-up visit to clean the bottom half of my teeth. I was completely shocked upon hearing this because I had never heard that my gums or teeth were terrible and when I told Dr. Vivekananthan this she insisted that I must have had sub-par dentists in the past. I found it very hard to believe that my old dentist was sub-par so instead of making a follow-up visit with Renaissance I decided to look for another dentist in the area. I ended up choosing Eissen's Family Dentistry in Morrisville and my visit with them could not have gone any more different. Once I told Dr. Stephanie Eissens what Dr. Vivekananthan told me she was baffled that she had told me my teeth and gums were in such terrible condition because as far as she could tell everything looked fine. When I mentioned how Renaissance wanted me to schedule appointments every 3 months instead of 6, Dr. Eissens assured me that it would not be necessary for me and that Renaissance probably just wanted to bill me as much as possible. Therefore please be warned. Do not go to Renaissance Family Dentistry. Apart from being rude to their patients all the dentists of Renaissance care about is how much they can bill you for. read more

I've been a patient here for more than 5 years and I've consistently been pleased with the service and their approach. The dentists at RFD are good at explaining the pros and cons of different options when there is not a perfect answer to what to do (such as whether to get a crown for a cracked tooth). My last two dentists always seemed to be in a big hurry to do a lot of dental work whereas here the approach seems a bit more conservative, which I appreciate. The hygienists have always been pleasant and made the experience comfortable. Love having the tv in the ceiling and one on the wall. I noticed on my most recent visit they now have blankets available to use if you're cold during the appointment, a nice touch. read more

Great experience overall. Staff is helpful and office is comfortable with TVs in rooms. Saw two dentists and both were good but the second was exceptional. Finished quickly and did a great job. He also helped create a dental plan that made sense and fit my budget. The only downside is that the office does not perform root canals. I was running 20 mins. late for my last appointment because of an emergency and when I arrived I was turned away and refused care that day. The dentists said I would have to reschedule and that their earliest availability for fillings was in a little over a month. A week later I received a bill in the mail for a no-show appointment fee. Are they serious? I will never go back and would agree with the other reviews that the male dentist is horrible to work with and that they seem to care more about profit than their patients. read more

I went here for a couple years and finally decided to switch dentists this year. The care here was efficient and the receptionists and assistants were always friendly, but I did not like the dentist. He always wrote me like 5 referrals and told me I definitely needed a root canal--turns out I did not. I also had a lot of pain during a filling and he kept telling me it wasn't possible for me to be having pain after the numbing shot. Its not like I would lie because I wanted more shots. Eventually I had a panic attack and had to go to the bathroom to calm down with a giant hole in my tooth. Every time he explained things to me it was with an air of long-suffering. I had a very poor experience with this place despite all of the modern technology, and seemed to be very well advertised place. I went for a simple abstraction and the female Dentist (wife head Dentist) attempted to remove my tooth and anesthesia wore off due to the extended difficulty she had removing the tooth. My husband was in the room during the abstraction witnessing whole incident. Dentist (wife of head Dentist) came in and told her she was turning the tooth the wrong way to abstract. I did think that they were very close during his assistance to abstract tooth. My thought was that they were dating or married; however, I wasn't sure because that was not advertised and they both had different last names. While I do understand that mistakes do happen I was very displeased by the rudeness, the cover-up and the lack of follow-up care. After destroying my jaw bone and causing nerve damage she refuse to properly medicate me for the pain, didn't want to take accountability and/or didn't want to provide adequate care. My husband asked what was she going to do because I was in extreme pain and was not healing and Dentist (wife of head Dentist) reply was what do you want me to do. My husbands reply was fix my wife. I lost months or wages, and had to pay for an emergency surgery at Lane and Associates to fix my broken jaw bone which cost over $1,000. After many calls and complaints I was referred to Dr. Reebye her dental associate who did not disclose that my jaw bone was broken but said I had a dry socket and it would eventually heal. It is very sad that another dentist had to diagnosis and treat after her dental associate x-rayed and lied about my surgery injury. My husband and I last attempt to get her to take accountability she refused to pay for any of the surgery cost say I signed a waiver that I did not know I had signed because everything is electronic. I was asked to sign with not explaining of what I was signing. I went through all this pain physically, mentally and financially for a tooth that was chipped, was not hurting, and that the dentist said she could not fill but had to abstract. I will never go to Renaissance Dentistry on Fayetteville Road in Durham ever again. I am also thankful that Lane and Associates fixed Renaissance Dentistry Dental mistake. read more

I had a terrible experience here. I was explicit that I made an appointment to have some chipped bonding repaired. When I came in they wanted to go through the whole check up and cleaning routine. I had to come in three separate times before they would fix the chipped bonding. I have had this done on initial visits at other places before. When I came in to get the bonding repaired they told me that they would need to strip the bonding off the teeth and start from scratch. I have had chipped bonding repaired many times without having to do this. When they reconstructed the teeth, they looked terrible. They are too large and lopsided. When I told them I did not like them they tried to fix them again but made them look even worse. Then rather than try to get me what I wanted, they explained to me why they thought my teeth looked good and said this was the best he could do. They then referred me to a specialist so I could get them fixed. Now I am going to have a second reconstruction when all I wanted was a minor chip repaired. read more
