Let me give you a brief description... Imagine a freshly baked croissant... the smell of butter fills the air as it is pulled from the oven and a faint aura of pastry steam emits from the shining upper layer of flaky crust. If that wasn't enough, image a liquid layer of dark chocolate decadence bathing the freshly naked croissant.... Now take that croissant and picture what it looks like if left out in the kitchen for one week. Yeah. Nasty old crust next-day-drag-queen-make-up-on-your-face chocolate covering up a stale and flavorless piece of worthless pastry. NON!!! Oh but I had more! I also, got the pecan something something cake who's name and flavor slip my mind because of its extreme sub-mediocrity... I admit that it was my mistake coming here in the first place. It's a total tourist trap to feed those in need of a quick fix. After hours of shopping and four bags filled with clearance apparel from this year's summer season, I was in need of some sugar. Looking through the window, I could tell this place had one-star written ALL over it and the ONLY reason I went was because my brother's name is Rene. Amazing AMAZING soft pure cream ice cream made in various flavors, to be eaten with warm waffles, some dipped in chocolate and topped with fresh strawberries. A wide selection of baked goods and ice cream make this place worthy of visiting anytime, but especially nice that it stays open late in the night. UPDATE: I left a $500 silk and cashmere Burberry scarf here at 2 am and didn't realize it was missing for 24 hours. My husband had ZERO faith that someone would have turned it in, but we called and lo and behold they had it!!! ONE WORD: CHURROS! That should be my review but lets put some more masa (dough) in this review. So this place is pretty small and was packed the five times I stopped by and/or walked by it. The people make it seem smaller (since it gets packed) and most of them are there for one thing and one thing only, the churros. They're made with love no lie, some of the best churros I've had. They can add nutella, whipped cream, sprinkles, cinnamon, etc. They pretty much making sugar crack; highly addictive. Even one of the locals said to not come back....because we'd be addicted to it and gain a couple lb's (Yes, lb's not lbs). A small order is good for two or three people, they give you a lot. Now if you're a champ and you're not a punk about your food business, then by all means get a medium. But, a small is a good size. Its like ordering a larger fries at mickey d's. This place is pretty nice. Late night snack or high food is easy to find around here. I ordered a donut and profiteroles and was served very quickly. My friends ordered churros and that's where the wait comes in. It's a light and social spot and I love the place and will come back. You cannot go to Amersterdam without visiting Rene's! Everytime I visit, I come here daily for a donut and each night for desert. You cannot get fresher churros anywhere else and they are very generous with the toppings. Expect to wait about 5-10 minutes for your food as they are always busy. My two favorite items are the churros (just with powdered sugar) or a crepe with whipped cream and strawberries. If you wanted to get the other toppings - just be aware that they will drench your food in chocolate or whipped cream (or whatever you choose). I have not tried their savory items as it does not look like a lot of people eat from this section. I only eat the items with high turnover. read more

A nice place to stop by and grab a Danish, a donut with icing or some chocolaty chocolate cake (my personal choice). Rene have the best churros I've ever had in my life and I've tried many in the USA as an avid fan of Mexican food. The churros are freshly made, hot, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and with the nutella topping, it's heavenly. The only upside down is it may take up to 15 minutes to get your order when it's busy. Also, the prices are steep for churros. A medium size with a topping cost 12 Euro; however, it's big enough to share with another person. Further, there are only three chairs available for customers to seat so this is mostly a "take away" or "to go" environment. Give it a try. Rene's is always poppin after dinner time. The one thing that enticed me the most was the churros. The churros were fresh made, they looked nice and crunchy but still soft and chewy on the inside. And that is exactly how it tasted too!! I got my Nutella in a cup on the side so it doesn't get too messy. It wasn't my first time having chocolate and churros but it was definitely better then the first time I ever had them. I wanted to come back another time before I left for NY one more time but by then it was closed.. I also came one time for the crepe. Oh so nice we came here twice! The first time, we sort of stumbled on this place and just wanted an afternoon sugar fix. The second time, we deliberately went out of our way to return here even though bakeries seem to be a dime a dozen in Amsterdam. I got lured into Rene's by its bright lights and vast array of sweet delicacies. Geez, there was a lot of stuff on display and it all looked gooooood. This place isn't bad - if you're a sweet-toothed bread fanatic, this place is definitely for you. There are plenty of things from breads, sweets, pastries, and sandwiches - of course, I wanted a kroketten. They have those too which made my mouth jump for joy when the young lady told me the cost (somewhere just under 3 Euro). The main bad thing about this place is that it's packed - I mean PACKED full of tourists. It's difficult to get the attention of the young ladies working behind the glass cabinets of sweets and then you have some other folks sans manners looking to shout over you so they can get their items first. My husband had a pain au chocolat that was ok, but nothing special and a brownie that was about the same. After spending all morning walking around and trying to decide where to have breakfast we finally settled on Rene's. You could see their delicious baked goods as you walked past since its an open bakery on a corner. Both ladies who helped us were very friendly. We had a custom made breakfast sandwich that she put together as we ordered. It was simple, but she was actually supposed to be making deli sandwiches, so we were happy she was okay with making us something else. Then we split a chocolate covered waffle and I had a mocha. It was hard deciding on which item to get because their display was full of options, but why not waffle while in the Netherlands. The lady behind the bakery counter was so nice. We talked with her a while. She was originally from Canada, but had married a Dutch man. We couldn't help but laugh when she asked if we were Canadian as well because we were so friendly. Everywhere we go, we are always mistaken as being from somewhere we are not from, but somewhere that is hip and cool or with friendly people. When we had walked by while deciding where to eat they were very busy, so we knew they had to be good. We were fortunate enough that by the time we made our decision it had died down so we were able to sit at the small bar table. A steady flow of foot traffic keeps this place humming. I had a Nutella filled crepe which was very delicious. I like the fact that the crepe was made to order. It takes a little longer to get it but it is definitely worth the wait. They also have a great selection of bakery goodies if you want to try different items that they offer. I was in Amsterdam for 3 days and the strawberry croissant was on my mind day and night, it is that good or I have a severe unhealthy relationship with custard.
