Contemplating on 3 stars or 4 stars. I would give them a 3.7 stars for the actual tart. I only got to try the date tartlet, ~4 Euro for a small tart Good crust, lacks a little bit butter flavor, though texture of the crust is more like a butter cookie than a pie crust (flaky). Plain crust with some Idates jam in the middle. I think it's homemade dates jam. Dates flavor is mild but apparent. I would have put more dates in the filling to bring out the flavor more, or maybe more salt and spices. The balance of the crust and dates are just a little off, too much crust in ratio of the dates itself. Price is reasonable for European standards. The cafe itself is very cute with very nice and sweet people working there. Interior is cute and small, fits the name of the bakery perfectly. I would suggest coming in to sit down and relax with coffee and some tarts. read more

"A little less muffin lovin"... Yep, I'm definitely not a cupcake but a muffin girl. Do need a little less muffin lovin, cause my muffin tops are starting to runneth over... What's also overflowing is the hospitality. A snuggy bug rug little bakery. The prices on the other hand are VERY reasonable. The mini sandwiches...only €1,50 or 1,90 or so. Perfect! The carrot muffin will set you back only €1,50! A nice moist cake bursting with autunmy flavors. And it's even got light but creamy frosting. Seriously, who needs a €2+ cupcake anyway. Like America's favorite overweight family, my love for the sweet far exceeds just the love of honey sweet nicknames. Except, unlike Honey Boo Boo's mom June, I prefer the not overly sweet. I was in the area yesterday and I was looking for lunch. How funny that lunch ended up being dessert. Life is unpredictable, always eat dessert first. This cute little bakery sits right across from the famous Brood bakery. I went into both stores, but found Sugar & Sweet so much more interesting. The owner was very nice and told me that the bakery opened only three weeks ago! So, I was lucky to be able to have lunch (dessert) here. It was very cold and rainy out, so naturally, coffee was in order. The owner kindly made me a latte. And while he was doing that, I was busy spying all the nice goodies in the display window. I saw a carrot cake cupcake and immediately I was in love. The way to Vivian's heart is through carrot cake heaven. I asked him for the cupcake and sat down to have my treat. I have to say, this carrot cake was one of the best I have ever had. And I am quite a carrot cake purveyor, I will hunt down any store that makes mind blowing carrot cake. The carrot cake was not very sweet at all, which is great! Sometimes in the States, they just make it all too sweet. The cake was soft, moist with a very light icing (not like the heavy cream cheese ones back home). Such a cute spot! It's new, small and the guy that owns it bakes everything himself. I'm in love! Though I must admit that he gets one extra point for being Israeli and about a million points for having a delicious sandwich with hummus! And being able to pronounce hummus, which finding out he's Israeli did explain. ;) The place is painted in white and light lavender which is great because it really opens up the space! And I love the fact that there's a small window seat. My cappuccino came with a heart in the foam, super cute and the foam lasted right until the last sip! Awesome. The coffees also came with a cute little biscuit made with puff and a lemon cream; yum! You can also buy this in a box along with some Israeli wine or a box of honeycomb bits covered in white chocolate or some bionade. Loads to choose from anyway. Now, people who know me, know that I am not a huge fan of bread. It has to be very high quality bread for me to eat it and believe me, this was the right stuff. Flippie ordered a roll with turkey and parmesan and I ordered one with hummus and roasted peppers. At first when they arrived I thought I had gotten the same sandwich as there was also parmesan on mine. Parmesan? Hummus? Weird combination in both our brains, but upon further inspection, this was definitely a roll with hummus and roasted pepper; with parmesan! What seemed weird at first now totally made sense. It was delicious! After a while we had finished our coffees and my mind suddenly drifted back to that cheesecake that had been the first thing I saw when walking in. Cheesecake is most definitely my thing, but I tend not to order it in this country, because Dutch people just never seem to understand the cheesecake. They just don't. But this cheesecake had already caught my eye walking in and when I learned the owner/baker is Israeli I had to try because we Israeli's make an amazing cheesecake and this one is no exception! It was superduper-mega-yummy! And that is not a compliment that I hand out to just any old cheesecake. I will definitely be back here and probably bring my dad next time so he and the owner can talk shop in Hebrew! Next time maybe I'll put together a little afternoon tea arrangement for myself with the cheesecake, quiche and brioche with clotted cream and jam. The other Yelpers are right! This cafe is adorable and chock full of sweets. I've been craving cheesecake for several months but haven't found something that hit the spot, and so I turned to Yelp. Now, I'm very picky when it comes to my cheesecake and have been disappointed multiple times in the Netherlands. However, this cheesecake takes the cake (badum dum). It is a different kind of cheesecake than I am used to. It has a very airy texture more similar to Japanese cheesecake and has a subtle cheesiness to it. I heard it was because this is an Israelian style. Overall, it is delicious! I may have preferred a more crunchy/crumbly crust, but the cheesecake filling is really good. And it wasn't too expensive either. It is a very small cafe and right on Zeedijk. The owner is the baker and it feels like you're in his open kitchen (his kitchen is literally right there). It has a lovely homey feel and the owner is so sweet. I will continue in my search for cheesecake in the Netherlands, and until I find the "one", I will visit this place more often. read more

Hidden somewhere behind the red district of Amsterdam you can find this cosy little place. They have a good selection of drinks, coffees and snacks (you like sweets don't you). I had the Chai Latte, apparently they are known for this specific drink (or at least when I discovered them on a blog). Very friendly staff, fun fact they love pugs. There is a wifi connection for those without a data subscription and they do Yelp checking deals, so best to check the connection before ordering your drink because there could be a great deal hidden. I didn't tried the food, so can't give you an opinion on that, but was not disappointed with my chai latte. read more

I fear I am the victim of 'Five Starredness Expectations'. Whilst visiting Amsterdam, I came to Sugar and Spice Bakery after reading the Yelp reviews raving about this little cafe which was a stone throw away from where I was staying. I was expecting the most delicant cheesecakes, scrumptious quiches and exotic coffees. The cafe decor itself didn't seem to be particularly notable - there were artworks (available for purchase) on the walls, and the furniture is bog-standard cafe furniture, complete with a table which stands on 3.9 legs, propped up to 4.0 with a piece of cardboard you supply yourself. The staff seemed alright, though they mainly stayed at the back of the cafe talking amongst themselves. I tried a quiche, which was by no means bad, but far from the best I've had in a cafe. I also opted for a slice of cheesecake, and without wanting to sound gluttonous, I know my cheesecakes - this wasn't the cream of the town. It was alright, and passable for it's price, but for homemade cheesecakes, you can do better. The coffee again, didn't seem to be anything of particular note. I almost wish the guy who served me hadn't talked me out of the Yelp offer Iced Latte, but the dismal weather sold me on a hot drink. Overall, I'd say this place is fine if you're just passing by and want somewhere to sit down and relax for a while. By no means should you actively search it out and go there expecting the world, because you will likely leave disappointed. read more

I always feel just a little torn about this place, it's kinda delightful, but it has a glaring issue that I think about whenever I pop by. The Good: - The people who work in here are really nice, they're super enthusiastic and seem to really like what they do. - The food has always been pretty good. The Bad: - The coffee. I'm afraid. Unfortunately it fails on both counts for me, it's not got a great taste and can really take a while to make, even when the place is basically deserted. - The little seating area by the door is for waiting for coffees to go, but if you order just before a bunch of folk arrive then you're left uncomfortably trapped by the door. If you want to sit in, get a little bite to eat and a drink then go ahead, but I'd avoid for a to-go coffee. read more

To drink I had a lovely chai tea but the real star here was the morsel of brownie that came with the hot drink. My complaint would be that the morsel was too small but these guys must know what they are doing, as I bought a whole brownie to go because of that little bit of foreplay! I also had a slice of decadent quiche - well seasoned veggies, creamy quiche-ness and the pastry, oh the PASTRY! I was craving a chai tea latte and this place shows up in reviews as a place to go for one. I was pretty disappointed in it. It tasted like very lightly spiced milk with cinnamon on top. The chai came with a small brownie chunk which was much too dry for my taste. The food definitely is the star. I ordered a €8,50 breakfast which included the chai, a croissant with jam, and a tiny sandwich (think the size of a dinner roll). I chose the mozzarella, which was topped with eggplant on a pesto-covered wheat roll. Both were delicious. Service was great. The guys were super nice. read more

So our first day in Amsterdam, I told my family I wanted to find a nice bakery and a coffee. We found Sugar and Spice quickly after departing metro near Centraal Station. The bakery is small but a true find! After scanning the treats we ordered a few slices of cake/pie and hot drinks. The server/cashier was very friendly and advised us on options as well as nearby restaurants. When we went to pay the credit card reader wasnt working so my wife went out to find an ATM. We were welcomed to hang out and he gave my youngest more cookies to occupy him. Took a bit but my wife and 14yo son returned with cash (and a tale on how they found the Red Light District . I decided to visit sugar and spice bakery because actually the place I wanted was closed down and moving locations. Lucky for me this second option was really good. I actually chose it because ice a check in special through Yelp for iced coffee. Since it was a hot day this sounded great. Since I was really there to get food I tried the bacon and egg sandwich. It was a little sweet and a little . Great combination of flavors there and the bread itself was full of flavor and texture. Absolutely dynamite small sandwiches (particularly the omelette and bacon) served on warm crusty bread and with fresh ingredients.
