Quality of care and attention to detail are top notch. Jess helped treat my a persistent running related tendinopathy successfully after two other practitioners at other clinics failed. Over many years as a runner and then as a serious golfer and yoga practitioner I have had a lot of physical therapy. But my most positive experience yet was with Jessica van Soest at Renew Physical Therapy in Oakland. I had a compressed nerve in my cervical spine that caused weakness in my left arm, shoulder, and hand. It was so bad that I could barely hold a golf club parallel to the ground, I couldn't roll up my yoga mat without dropping it, and I couldn't lift a skillet that I've lifted without trouble for years. I feared the worst but after five or six sessions with Jessica the weakness resolved and I returned to normal functioning. Now, a couple of months later, I am as strong as ever. Great experience at Renew with Jessica. From a business/service standpoint they were always punctual and responsive in working with me around schedule. Most important, the PT experience was superb. Jessica and team were friendly and supportive. Even with so many patients, she kept track of goals, progress and changes at a pretty granular level. We found some other ailments that were interfering with the primary PT goals and worked together to address those problems. I liked the homework and recommended exercises to practice outside of appointments. I'd return and have already recommended Renew to family members. Renew and Jessica Van Soest were fantastic for my first ever PT experience! It took a little while to get in, but it was worth the wait. I found Renew after six months passed following an injury and I was still having significant pain. There was noticeable improvement right away, and I was able to get back to doing what I love (eventing) with a plan for mitigating and managing any remaining pain. When I sprained my MCL a month or so after beginning PT with Jessica, she didn't even blink, we just incorporated new work into the plan to address that as well, and I was back to riding exactly a month later. I still find all the exercises useful! She was always engaged, extremely patient and thorough answering all of my questions (and enduring my sheepish lack of basic human anatomy), and never even a little judgmental about my chosen sport. In my world it's never if but *when* I need PT again, Renew will 100% be my first call. read more

She demonstrates rather than just directs exercises, working them along with me. She challenges me -- I am gaining strength and balance I didn't know was possible. I've been going to Renew PT for a couple years now for a bulging/herniated disc and in that time I've gotten stronger and developed a better understanding of what my body needs. I've worked the most with Jessica, but all the PTs and front desk staff are excellent and supportive. I spent 6+ months regularly visiting the office for my sessions. They are very organised and their office is very responsive. One warning is they do fill up so schedule ahead as much as possible, they will also do their best to squeeze you in where they can. Most of my sessions were with Jessica and I couldn't have been happier to work with her. I came to Renew to recover from ACL surgery, it was a long process and getting the right PT was essential to having a healthy recovery. From my first appointment with Jessica I was at ease, she is a professional who truly understands the body and patient care. Appointments are efficient and they utilise a portal to give you exercises at home. I felt that the time in office was always worth it, I was working/moving versus having someone ice my knee for 20 mins which I could have done at home. I've been to PT at a couple of different places and this one is definitely the best. The key differentiator is that Jessica and team focused on changing my behaviors and only loosening the muscles needed in order to allow me to change my behaviors. This was all about fixing my posture and getting rid of posture-related pain on a permanent basis. I've played Ultimate at elite club and professional levels for 15 years, and after tearing my rotator cuff at the start of this season was pretty sure my career was over. When I started at Renew I could barely turn my head, lift my arms, or move my back without pain. With Jessica's help I was moving better, with less pain, in only a few sessions. After a few weeks I'd regained almost full range of motion. After a few months, I was back on the field and playing again. None of which would have been possible without Jessica's help. I have nothing but good things to say working with the wonderful Renew team! I went there after shoulder surgery (removal of long bicep tendon) and worked primarily with Betsy and Jessica. They were fantastic at not only treating the acute needs post surgery - regaining basic movements and strength - but also working on longer-term recovery. I couldn't recommend this place more for beginning your recovery, no matter how complex, underdiagnosed, or mysterious your pain is (especially recovering from hip impingement, labral tears, FAI surgery recovery). After dealing with lingering hip pain for 3 or so years, I decided to finally enroll in a PT program to try to mobilize some of my soft tissue and work on better biomechanics to strengthen the area. Jess and Jessica were welcoming from day one of my 6ish month journey to fixing my hip problems. In my initial consultation where I described my hip pain, Jessica informed me of multiple potential causes, ranging from scar tissue build up to a labral tear. Since I had pretty decent strength and mobility, we figured that it was just some scar tissue that could be broken up with manual therapy and some dynamic stretches. Fast forward 2-3 months with only minor improvement, we re-evaluated and decided to get an MRI done. This revealed that I actually had a labral tear due to a bone spur on my femur, a disorder known as Femoroacetabular Impingement. The bone spur was rubbing against my hip labrum, and causing it to tear. Without surgical intervention, the disorder can lead to early onset arthritis in the hip, resulting in needing a hip replacement potentially by age 40. I was referred to a surgeon in the area, and went back to Renew PT after the surgery for 2 more months to make sure that I had a collection of exercises I could continue to do as I continue my recovery for the next year or so. Just today I completed my first pain free run in 3 years :) thanks so much Jessica and Renew PT! read more

First off, I just want to say thank you to all the staff at Renew PT for finding a way to provide service to all of us during these difficult times. I came down with a groin/lower abdomen injury playing soccer earlier this year and after about 4 weeks of trying to "self-rehab" the shelter-in-place order went into affect and I was making no progress on getting better. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I started looking around for a PT and found great reviews about Renew and thought they would be a great fit. Since in-person visits were not possible Jessica (my PT) was able to help me out and do a virtual eval (telehealth visits!) and I have to say, although it takes some creativity, was very helpful and she was able to diagnose exactly what was going with my injury. We had weekly telehealth appointments over the course of the last few weeks, and I'm happy to say I'm feeling almost back to 100% without even having to step foot in their office. Jessica was super helpful and knowledgeable in explaining everything, and not short on creativity for coming up with an at-home routine to get me back to normal. I'm benefiting significantly from my Zoom virtual physical therapy treatments with my excellent (and delightfully upbeat) PT practitioner,Tanya. In addition to her endearingly cheerful demeanor (in this challenging time), she comes to each session well prepared and is consistently spot-on point with her plan for my treatment sessions. She has a deep understanding of kinesiology. She consistently gets at my issues and gently pushes me just enough and not too much, to safely extend my function. This is my 6th try at PT over a the past 6-8 years, but it's the very first time I actually look forward to my sessions. I've also been pleased how effectively Zoom has worked as a medium of treatment. It will be nice to get some hands on work at some point. However I'm finding great value in doing the work with Tanya virtually from home. It has rendered my effort to exercise at home an already familiar experience. For me that's been a HUGE benefit. I had major abdominal surgery in the spring and sought out PT in order to get back to running and lifting weights in a healthy way. It was difficult to find a physical therapist that would accept my insurance at first and I was SO glad when I found Renew! Once I did, I started getting stronger week by week and I was able to meet both my goals (getting back to running 30 mile weeks and lifting weights) in a healthy way.
