It was meant to change the perception of the viewer about a car company; to now be leading-edge, relevant & helpful. I would say something similar about this unassuming Presbyterian Church in North Park. Though "Presbyterian," & whatever that brings up inside you, it is a church w/ a unique balance in all the right places. Being from a denomination going back hundreds of years, it has an ancient & rooted stability in history. This is balanced with a unique, modern-world, today relevance, which becomes evident in some of the most important areas: Theology - grounded in solid biblical theology yet not afraid of questions. The church is part of the EPC Denomination, (Evangelical Presbyterian Church), https://epc.org/ which is a middle-of-the-road Presbyterian group - not, depending on your views, leaning heavily into either the conservative or liberal spectrum - they have a great balance of "majoring on the majors." Culture - 5-day old babies to 95-year-old seniors - you'll find a healthy mix of young families, infants, children, young adults, singles, middle-agers, older families & beautiful seniors - the whole gamut. This is not an "only 1 main demographic church." The crowd is also caring & friendly & you'll find everything from Navy to professionals, soccer moms, to retirees & yes, even a few hipsters. You can find community here. Church & State - you won't walk into a church telling you how to vote or that any one party, country or politician will be the redeemer of the world. The Savior here is clearly Jesus Christ and the preaching of His 'already here & yet still arriving' Kingdom is undoubtedly & clearly preached. Justice in the World - this group is serious about Jesus' teaching to 'be the Good News' to a hurting & needy world. They engage in an incredible number of inside & outside, city-wide, and national, ministries whose aim is to meet the needs of the needy and share the Gospel of Jesus. Staff - from the pastor to the associates, to the church secretary, worship leader, ministry leaders & others - I have found they exhibit a refreshing humility, selflessness, a friendly & open demeanor & a helpful spirit. Quality people. Feel free to visit. You're not gonna get a pep rally, pumping you up, or a political rally - it's going to feel pretty normal & low-key, but comfortable...kinda like a hybrid car, quiet, new, responsible...but with some torque - like I said, not your father's Oldsmobile.

Long story short 95% of our congregation left. Scattered. The music is a good mix of theologically-sound hymns and contemporary songs. The congregation is made up of friendly people of all ages, stages in life, and ethnicities. There are opportunities to fellowship through monthly meals, Bible studies, community groups, and different outreach ministries. The Lord's Day usually looks like this: morning service, fellowship break, prayer meeting/Sunday school. The exceptions are second Sunday there is usual morning service, fellowship break, and an evening service; and on the last Sunday, there is a fellowship meal after the morning service. The Lord's Supper is observed every week, with it being observed in the evening service on the second Sunday. GBC is a doctrinally-sound and Christ-centered Church.

I've been coming for about six years now. Sunday Assembly is a non-religious community that meets…read morethe third Sunday of the month at 11:00am, except for December when they do a special Solstice Celebration event on a different day. Two members of my family have limited physical mobility and the building the assembly meets at (Banker's Hill Club) is fully accessible. I'm also in a mixed faith marriage (atheist and Christian) so this is a legitimate community my whole family (and extended family when they visit) can be a part of since there's zero religion or doctrine. There's a reading/poem, usually a science lesson, and people in the seats share what's new in their lives. There's also singing and snacks/coffee. Even though the once a month assembly is the main deal, I enjoy a lot of the Meetup events: restaurants and service projects and game nights. When I was first attending, I was getting to know some of the people who founded this assembly and they talked about how one sign of a healthy community is that a person would have at least one person they could call at 2am in an emergency. So this community is set up so people can find others and build those relationships. Religious people get this from church and other folks get that from clubs. Sunday Assembly is trying to provide that for everyone else.

This is a different kind of "church" that meets the third Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. They…read moredon't have their own permanent building and use a hall in the Bankers Hill section of San Diego. The Sunday I went, there were about 50-75 people, dressed casually. The weather was hot and some fans were running in the hall. When I first walked in, a man was playing guitar through an amplifier that was turned up really LOUD (too loud, if you ask me). After the music, an instructor from UCSD gave a visual presentation on "Land of the Lemurs." It was different, to say the least. Sunday Assembly also puts on events such as Sandwich Saturdays where the homeless are given food. In addition, there are walks in different parts of the county, including Batiquitos Lagoon Trail and Border Field State Park. The main downside, for me, were the horrible acoustics in the hall, which has bare walls with no padding whatsoever. The sound just bounces off the walls and goes everywhere. I am hard-of-hearing and wear hearing aids and do not hear well in halls or rooms like this. Note: There is no phone number listed for this church.

My son is very well behaved just lacks communication and may need someone to make sure he's doing okay by just asking, but they basically judged him on his intake bc he has a aid to help with math and reading at school and he's autistic and well I didn't lie about it so he needs a parent to attend when he knows Sunday school is his time and said mom no, so he can't attend bc he can't try it and bc he needs help in school and is considered Autistic he needs parents present, honestly seems super judgmental guess you need normal children that need no help and definitely not Autistic and hate to break it to you but all kids in someway usually need help. At this point really makes me not even want to keep trying to find the right fit church after this judgement since judging my son was my worst fear moving here

Today I finally got the opportunity to check out the campus and then attended the 11:00 a.m. Sunday church service. I liked Horizon very much--the congregants seemed friendly and there were good vibes. I do not want to compare it to the church I usually go to, as far as the worship music goes. My preference is for a flashier rock music worship which gets me more in the mood for some good sermonizing. Horizon's is a very basic set-up, with a singer who plays the electric piano and a lady cellist. Nice but I need more pizzazz. Deduct 1 YELP STAR. The best part of Horizon: Mike MacIntosh. Pastor of Horizon for 36 years & just the right amount of Bible-thumping mixed in with some funny asides and personal family notes. I love that immediately we turned to Romans 8 and got right into the scriptural readings. After a prayer and amen, the Pastor read a few passages and then immediately explained what they meant to the congregation. Now this is not something all that unique, but some churches will open up the Bible, read one verse, and then the Pastor will pontificate ad nauseum the rest of the service. No, I want to get some book learning done on Sunday mornings. Breaking down Romans 8 into digestible passages and then doing explanations and some historical asides thrown in for good measure made for a perfect lesson in what Paul was actually trying to to say to the Romans regarding spiritual man versus sinful man. Could be that Pastor Mike was trained up in the Calvary Chapel method and that might account for a more literary reading of the scriptures. Next week for Easter, Pastor MacIntosh will be holding services outside in the Quad area. I think that should be nice since I noticed that the Horizon Church area is really just the school gymnasium decked out on Sunday with a stage and a mic stand. It was disconcerting listening to the sermon and looking up above for some heavenly guidance only to see basketball nets hoisted above the gathered pious crowd of Clairemont worshipers.

Pastor Bohdan takes stories from the Bible and applies them to everyday life (which really helps you understand the Bible's teachings).
