If you live in Reno, or are visiting from Sacramento (insert Michalangelo here), this should be a Fat Tuesday tradition!! This fabulous Rotary fund raiser is all about celebrating!! The entire event center is full of food, wine, other spirits, and auction tables. Thanks to Yelp I scored a pair of general admission tickets, Michalangelo was a blast to roam the event with. There were 25 Reno restaurants and caterers and uncountable wineries represented. For several hours you just roamed, drank and nibbled. Trying delights like bourbon caramel ice cream, tender roast beef, mushroom raviolis, and raclette. Once around the vast room, then back tracking to hit a couple of favorites, I was easily stuffed. The prize tables were incredible. So many cool choices ranging from affordable to quite high end. There were two wheel barrows full of wine that were raffled. Huge bummer didn't win either. The Rotary has obviously been doing this event for years and have down pat. The spacing and use of the center was perfect. No huge crowds or lines, plenty of space to move around in and check out all the vendors. I'll be returning next year. I believe next year I'll sign up as a volunteer.

Don't Let "Magic Bullet Hangover Cure" Drive Your Entertainment Choices! (He's A Mischievous Lil Guy!) SITREP ...because Magic Bullet Hangover Cure is a hard to keep up with! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/reno-rotary-mardi-gras-reno?select=KZYaiv2OoEhSUGHRc5YcxQ That is ONE HARD PARTYING LITTLE DUDE! THE SETUP Thanks to my lovely friend, fellow Elite Yelper - AND the Yelp Queen of Reno - Ms. Donna S.! She shanghaied me from my usual Sacramento Tuesday doldrums and kidnapped me to Reno for the happening madness of the Reno Rotary Mardi Gras at the Reno Events Center! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/reno-rotary-mardi-gras-reno?select=yYhLSYLSR7cMRRslTB0JBA And there we met up with other nefarious Yelpers (because you will never find a more notorious hive of scum & villainy!) https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/reno-rotary-mardi-gras-reno?select=yWIfEWij_96vi61GJQXIZA LE MENU! Oh, but wait! Did I mention yet that there was tons of delicious food, and barrels of refreshing, tasty wine?!? (Because how else would you want to have copious amounts of food & drink referred to than in "tons" and "barrels", right? Okay........I'll grant you that there is NOTHING unappealing to hear wine referred to in barrels. In fact, it's rather attractive, isn't it?) *WINE So many wines....reds, whites, roses (when I mixed them in my glass - I actually didn't SEE a rose of note). And I'm IMMEDIATELY attracted to any varietal that has the word "SHACK" in it... https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/reno-rotary-mardi-gras-reno?select=KyFIIYiedQBicSbBP_KG9w *ROOT BEER! Yes! You read correctly! There was a special root beer here by and it was so deLISH! (And the melted wax made me think immediately of Mickey Rourke & Kim Basinger, though I'm sure that was not it's intent, at least when the bottle was sealed 9 1/2 Weeks ago... *cough*) https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/reno-rotary-mardi-gras-reno?select=eafBAd2R8UUzWHL6t0AMag *MEATBALLS THE BEAUTY! The decor and the costumes and the masques and the vibe was just exquisite and a wonderful celebration of all things Mardi Gras! *BEAUTIFUL COURTESANS I love the ladies & gentlemen who walked throughout the event site, all festooned in a colorful pageantry of costumes and mask! Whenever I got a chance I snapped a shot of these lovely regal denizons of this "event center court". Even got my peeps in the shots: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/reno-rotary-mardi-gras-reno?select=POAoa1XFnFbdI4-IKCc_WQ MAGIC BULLET HANGOVER CURE This guy RAWKS! He's a cute little orange'ish bullet (with an orange'ish flavor) and had his support staff of two lovely ladies and Tory (a promotions manager of some sort - if not the owner, I really didn't remember). Anyways, definitely my favorite booth and site of the most ...uh...FUN pictures taken. ;) KUDOS A shout out to the Reno Rotary Club for setting up this Mardi Gras Celebration! Your staff, the young ROTC ladies & gents, the volunteers, etc., all made for a well-functioning & safely executed event. Kudos to all my Reno Elite peeps who came down to Sacramento a few weeks back and setup some awesome UYEs for the "Reno-To-SacTown Train Weekend" of fun that we enjoy together, and who were also here THIS night for me to enjoy their company again! And a tip-o-the-hat to Yelp Community Manager (CM) Michael T. for connecting Reno Yelp with this event and getting us Yelpers to enjoy the many wonderful facets of this celebration for Mardi Gras! Now that I'm finally well, I can tell ya about this awesome event! Reno Rotary is a wonderful group! The Mardi Gras is a wonderful celebration! Put these two together and you have a paaartay! As soon as I arrived I felt the excitement flowing throughout the building! We wondered around a bit, then found the VIP table! Next to the music, and the festivities! It was wonderful meeting new Yelp friends! I wandered around some more and had some wonderful bites! Since I wasn't really feeling that well, I had a few sips of the local draft beer from The Depot. I think my favorite stop was eating the cake bites from "nothing Bundt cake". Unfortunately, due to the way I was feeling, I left a little early. From the pictures I have seen, I missed a few of my other friends that showed up that I never saw! Thank you Reno Rotary club, Yelp, and Michael T for allowing me to enjoy this wonderful event! I didn't win anything, but, there's always next year!

I went a few years ago as a volunteer in a booth. This year my wife took me as her plus one! It seems that this party has really raised their game since the first year I went. Lot's of space to mingle and lots of things to try....but not too many. Just the right amount of food and so many great wines to choose from. We were lucky to get some VIP tickets which got us in the door as early as 4:00. We actually arrived at about 4:30 because of work. Because of this, we didn't really have any problem getting in the door and we were able to go around to most of the booths...some weren't open yet, so we just went back when they were. My favorite food item was probably the Oxbow's prime rib. I also really enjoyed "Bourbon St" where they had lots of great whisky to sample. Kudos to whoever is running this great event. I wonder if next year they might figure out a way to get the Balcony in the Reno Event center put to the Mardi Gras style good use. I look forward to going to this event next year!

I was lucky enough to get to attend this event and brought my hubby along too! It was crowded but not insane, great music, and the entertainment (stilt walkers, live band) was great. They had more wine than you could ever try, some food choices (I'm glad we ate beforehand), 4 breweries, and some hard alcohol choices. We definitely got our fair share to drink! The food was ok, my favorite was the sushi and gelato! The auction was neat in that you bid on your phone and we even won a painting. The crowd was definitely older and you could tell we just didn't have to $$$$ to keep up with the people in the room but we had a great time and hope to support the Rotary again!

What comes to mind when I mention beads, masks, costumes, carnival performers, food and alcohol? If you said Carnival or Mardi Gras you would be correct. The Reno Events Center was turned into a huge party Mardi Gras center replete with a variety of bites from sweet to savory. It reminded me of a Dr. Suess quote "From There To Here From Here To There Fun Things Are Everywhere". Everywhere you looked there was some tasty bite or well developed wine, brandy or some other libation to be had. Not to mention the wide array of auction items to bid on. The bidding used new technology and if you were out bid it sent you a message. Super interesting. The items up for auction were numerous such a vacation packages, spa packages, golf packages, fruit baskets, barrel of wine etc. Exciting to watch to see if you won the auction. My favorites and places to try around town were Liberty Food and Wine with a salami and cheese toothpick bite, Oxbow Cafe and Bistro with prime rib with a horseradish sauce, Be Sweet 2 Each Other with their lemon cake, Kronenbourg Blanc a light tasting beer from France, Verdi Local Distillery with an Apple Cinnamon Gin (oh my this tasted like apple pie) this was super yummy. I have a new list of different businesses to try out. What a wonderful event!!

Had a great time this year 2019 at the Mardi Gras event. It was all decorated up so cool, lots of Mardi Gras colors and tons of beads and feathers. All the food was fabulous, and what a great selection of first class wines. Hope to go again next year. How nice to also have it on Fat Tuesday!! Thank you Yelp and Michael T!!!

"I ate too much." Me, thirty minutes after we stormed into the ballroom (you think a couple of puny ROTC kids at the front doors could stop a flood of hungry, thirsty people?) "I drank too much." My friend Cathy, thirty minutes into the event. Everyone has their priorities. You arrive, you get a wrist band declaring you're at least 21 years old (I offered my ID, but no one cared), you get a wine glass, and then you head to the Yelp Wheel of Fortune to claim your Yelp schwag, and then you roam the perimeter of the ballroom and try samples from the 20+ different restaurants. I ate an entire bundt cake sneakily, in about 12 different toothpicked samples. I raved about the mushroom ravioli from the Silver Legacy. The mango pulled pork from Whole Foods was putrid. Someone offered a spicy cocktail shrimp - they pretended not to notice that I came by 5 times in 45 seconds. Loved the date wrapped in bacon, not so fond of the lump of mac and cheese on top of a crostini - it fell off. Just to make sure, I tried another one. Yep, still fell off. (PS. The mac and cheese that Dale made from scratch at the homeless feed looked better and probably tasted better.) I don't drink really, so I had a tiny little sip of someone's Pinot Grigio and drank bottled water the rest of the night. Attire: Come drenched in mardi gras beads, jester hats and crazy feather eyeglasses. It was like an offshoot of Burning Man, just less dusty and more upscale. (By the way, Burning Man has less MOOP than this crowd!) Hung out at a Yelper table with the likes of Rain, Amanda, Lori, Nathan, Sabrina and her wife; met newbie Jodi D and waved to Ashley. Robert and Ly were helping out at the Yelp schwa desk and of course, Michael T was there. Another five star Yelp night - thank you!

What an amazing event. I first want to thank the Rotary for putting this on. It was so spectacular. Walking in you are just overwhelmed with how big this event truly is. There are so many different wineries, distilleries and, food vendors. You are handed an empty wine glass upon walking in the door which you can use to go up to different wineries or distilleries and try their products. I have to say out of all of the different ones I tried St. Mayhem was probably my favorite. The flavors of their craft wines were fantastic. It was layered with flavor and very well balanced. And best of all it came in a can. Which at first I wasn't sure I wanted to try but I am very glad I did. It was fantastic. Bently Heritage Distillery was also a definite must try. They brought their vodka and their gin. Both are made with the ingredients from their property. Everything is sourced onsite. The flavors of both the vodka and gin were very distinct. I am not a gin fan at all and I actually really enjoyed the gin. It wasn't overpowering, it was well balanced and didn't burn going down. At this event you were not wanting for food. There was plenty of different vendors from Mari Chuy's, Bibo Freddo, Gas Lamp and, the different casinos. All of the food was great. The gelato from Bibo was so tasty and light. It wasn't heavy like some ice cream can be. The ceviche and the tostada from Mari Chuy's tasted fantastic. The flavor of the meat was so tender and with the hot sauce was perfect. Anything you tried from any of the vendors was great. This event is awesome. It goes back into helping the community and it is just a good time. Definitely something I will be looking forward to going to next year.

2019 Mardi Gras event was phenomenal! Happened to win a ticket from Yelp, so I decided to buy my fiance a ticket as well, which cost I believe $80. Let me tell you, I had such a great night that I wanted to relive it all. We didn't even think we were going to stay the whole night, but we actually ended up staying until the whole event was over. Good thing we got a room at Harrah's because of the food, wine, and liquor we consumed provided by some of the best local vendors in town. As soon as we got there, we were welcomed by staff in costumes and masks. That's when I started getting excited, I knew I was ready for one hell of an exciting night! After coat check and check-in, we walked into the ballroom and grabbed a map, some bead necklaces, and empty wine glasses. We started off on the right and made our way around the area. There were countless of amazing items out for auction. So we decided to set up an online account so we were able to participate in the silent auction. Out of the 4 items we bidded on, we only won one: the Bully's basket. My man was so excited about his first auction win. Not only were we able to help out Reno Rotary, but we also scored on a great basket and an eventful night! I could not get enough of some of the food provided there, such as Chuy's Mexican food and Indian Kabab. They were above and beyond, along with all the friendly staff involved! The photobooth was also such a blast, we did a before and after pictures for the night. The decorations were so cute, plus the performers that were there. A1! Thank you so much Yelp, Michael, and Reno Rotary Club for letting us be a part of such fun night! I am so grateful for all the things I experience because of Yelp. We can't wait for next year's fabulous event.

What an amazing night! This was a perfectly done event from the check in to the item pick up at the end. When you walked in there was someone to direct you to check in and coat check. Inside there was someone to help you get registered for the silent auction. There were over 100 wines represented and liquor of every type including Whistle Pig rye. There was also every wound of food from the Eldorado's mushroom ravioli to curry from Indian Kabob and Curry. The silent auction items were fun and there were a large variety. I love bidding on my phone but I got outbid on two things I really wanted at the last second by someone with much quicker fingers than I! I was able to out bid on a couple of things and left a winner. Whoever did the decorations really did an amazing job transforming the convention center to Bourbon Street. (See pics) It was a great night, a lot of fun and those planning and executing this night should be super proud of themselves because all the work they put into the event really showed.

This event was amazing. I love the details throughout. The food and drinks were on point. I loved that there was king Cake offered. The ravioli from The Row was is amazing. Bibo had some great gelato flavors. I can honestly see how this event keeps on increasing in attendance. It's a definite must to attend at least once, but once you do you'll want to come back for more.

    Michelle H.

Ok... This is event was nothing short of AMAZING!!! I'm completely blown away! I was gifted a ticket from Yelp, but let me tell you, I will gladly purchase my ticket next year. $75 is totally worth it. The amount of food, and wine, and entertainment floored me! The set up was perfect. The room flowed well, and food and wine were both spread out, so I didn't feel like I had to be at one end of the room for food and all the way to the other end for drinks. The lines for food and wine were not long at all, and they all moved really quickly. That's a big deal for me with these types of events. How long do I have to wait in line? It's never fun to stand there while everyone else is out socializing. That was not the case with this event. The costumes, can we talk about how people go ALL OUT for this?? It's amazing. One of the best parties I've been to in Reno. The Rotary sure knows how to throw a good party. Man!!!

I really love the new location at Idlewild park! There were many Vendors, Food and Drink Choices. One of my favorites is Mr Margarita. I love to mix the two choices together $9. I was starved and I had a $5 hot dog that hit the spot. Then my husband tried a hand dipped foot long corn dog which I had a bite of and it was tasty. What's not to love at the festival, I think any choice is a win! The musical was good, I found it interesting you can now purchase VIP tables each day. What a nice added touch to the event. There are many add ons you can purchase as well. Something for everyone, craft beer tasting, rafting, golf, rock climbing or just sit back and listen to the entertainment while taking in the beauty of your surroundings. If you haven't gone to the festival I definitely suggested going, you can take blankets, low back chairs, but no pets or outside food or drink. General admission is a weekend pass only $15 no exceptions.

The live performances were fun, and I can definitely see this becoming a staple for Reno Events. I didn't expect to pay $20 for entrance which was a bummer as we were going to bring more family and friends but the entry cost was a little too high for bringing kids. There were a nice set of carnival rides, but I was discouraged on buying tickets as we had already $40 to get into the event and wanted to save some of our budget to buy things from vendors. We went on the last day of the event, in the early afternoon and it was nice to see more locals enjoying themselves and it wasn't too crowded which was a plus in our book! My fiancé and I loved that dogs are welcome to join us as some other outdoor events do not allow us to bring our puppy. Overall, the variety of food, atmosphere, and performances were awesome! I only wish the entry price was reduced as I would've brought more people and would've had more money to spend on the vendors. Final verdict... I would definitely come back, but only if the entry prices come down or are removed. If this is your first time attending the event, the $20 is not so bad to see the art installations and see the live performances. I would recommend this for first timers.

The rib cook-off is definitely worth going to at least once, but honestly how many ribs can one eat?? It almost should be called a BBQ sauce smackdown rather than rib cook-off because seems like the sauce is the star nowadays. The ribs itself were ok. It was lacking the smokiness, some were hit or miss, being dry or not fall-off-the-bone tender, or were slathered in so much sweet BBQ sauce that you couldn't even taste the meat. - The juiciest ribs were from Aussom Aussie. - Butch's wasn't what I remembered years ago, not much flavor on the meat but the spicy BBQ sauce was my favorite. - BJ's was a total letdown. The sticky BBQ sauce was too sweet and covered up the too-dry ribs. - Bone Daddy's had a nice sear on the outside and had a bit of a smokiness. - Bison Rib from Montana was huge! But the meat was lean and SO chewy, I looked like a bison chewing on it. The prices now are insane. All samplers are an agreed upon monopolized price of $12 for 3 pork ribs. Every vendor sells the same price. Beef bones average $45-50. The VIP AYCE is so pricey that it's not even worth it. Enticing but who can possibly eat 20 ribs plus sides, beer and ice cream?! The setup is very nice and spaced out. There are trash bins everywhere, so the space is pretty clean. I liked how they have hand washing stations around also. The event is enjoyable only early morning or evenings. During the day is way to hot. Parking wasn't too bad since ppl come and go constantly and by the freeway, it's only a short 2 block walk. Fun event, but I left feeling greasy yet unfulfilled.

Watching the balloons…read morelight up before sunrise and slowly fill the sky is something you have to experience in person. The event is well organized, family friendly, and has a great community atmosphere. My biggest tip is to arrive early, dress in layers, and bring a chair or blanket. It gets chilly before the sun comes up, but it's absolutely worth it. Whether you're a local or visiting Reno, this is one of those events that reminds you how special our community is. I'll definitely be back.

It's not a regret waking up 2 in the morning to see this magical event. The dawn patrol started at 5am so we were there about 3:30. Parking starts to fill at that time and we were all bundled up. If you plan to do this event, wear comfy shoes as there's a lot of walking to get to the parking and going into the park itself. There's $25 cash parking fee if you park at San Rafael. But if you park outside, it's always free. Bring blankets and folded chairs. There's merchants selling food and other things which start serving at about 5:30 am. The place is almost at full capacity as early as 5am so be there at least 3:30am. I'm sure you will have an amazing time! All balloons for Dawn Patrol ascended at 5:30. Then about 7am all the other balloons started going up. See you again, next year!

2018. Part 2 Two…read moreweeks really meant dividing the review into two parts. Over the weekend I stopped in at one of my most favorite places- SÜP, for their RBW special trio of soups and a mini loaf of bread for $10. They have participated all seven years. I get this to go, and it becomes lunch for three days. Always delicious. Not on Monday, I finally got to Moo Dang. I am such a wimp when it comes to spicy, but I still enjoy Asian foods. The RBW special was Drunken Noodles (zero spice for me) and a Big Chang Beer for $10. The noodles still had fabulous flavor and the beer I sent to another table- cheers. Wednesday was continuing the RBW dine with friends. Erica and went to Zozo's for their over the top $30 RBW special. So many choices !!! Probably the best bargain during the event. Appetizer, soup or salad, main, and dessert all for $30. Oh, and don't forget their very addictive basket of garlic bread. Yep, easily two meals here. See separate Zozo's review for all the food. So indecisive and running out of time. Thursday I ran up to Skyline Kitchen and Vine. $30 for an adult beverage, appetizer, main and dessert. Craving a burger, I did the 8 oz Kobe Burger, topped with caramelized onions, white cheddar, and a steak sauce aioli. Check restaurant review for full food description. Another busy Friday, but Claudy came up from Carson to try the RBW $10 lunch special at Chihuahua's on South Virginia across from the Lexus dealer. Plenty of food for the price. Chips and salsa arrived first. Then platter of a beef enchilada and a chili Relleno with beans and rice. The meal was good, but nothing wowed me. And the food chilled off rather quickly. That didn't matter because the waitress took my plate before I was all thru. Claudy and I ordered each of the desserts. Both were very sweet. The place wasn't packed during lunch, but I did feel rushed. Saturday!! Oh no RBW is over. The fabulous finale is always the Chef Showdown. This year 6 chefs who participated in RBW sliced, diced and sautéed against each other for bragging rights of the best in Reno. They an hour to create a vegetarian plate using butternut squash, couscous, turmeric and pomegranate. Mmm the aromas that filled the air. The best part is you get to walk around all the kitchens and see how they cook and ask questions. Brett Moseley won best use of ingredients and Joe Bell won best plating and overall WINNER. Congrats to everyone!!! Now after two weeks of having so many fabulous food specials with lots of friends- I'm off to the gym. See you next year. Or in any locally owned restaurant. Remember- Break the Chain, Reno has fabulous food.

This year was the 7th Annual Reno Bites Restaurant Week, however for me, it was my very first…read moreparticipating in it. It was two weeks of absolute fun as my room mates and I made an effort to visit as many restaurants as we possibly could. I already made separate reviews for all the places we dined at for the Reno Bites Restaurant Week, but just in case you missed it, we visited: Liberty Food and Wine Exchange, Chihuahua's Cantina and Grill, Skyline Kitchen and Vine, Sierra St. Kitchen, Moo Dang, Shore Room, and lastly Fin and Filet. Of course, I would have loved to try them all out, but there's only so much we could visit with work and what not. I love food and I love to eat. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, I love them all. Not to mention there are countless restaurants and new ones keep popping up. With Reno Bites Restaurant Week, there are those selected and highlighted restaurants advertising their specials for those two weeks, making it very appealing to want to try them out. I, personally, was able to dine at many restaurants that I always wanted to try out, but never got the chance to. It was not just the food, but the experience as a whole. For those selected restaurants, it was great exposure and they were able to showcase a little taste of what they were about. And for us, it was fun and delicious experience. Unfortunately, we missed the Chef Showdown because we were out of town for the weekend. But, there's always next year and many years to come. Overall, this being my first ever Reno Bites, I have to say I loved every minute of it. Prices were very affordable and the foods were all so tasty. Sad to think we'll have to wait a whole year until the next one rolls around, but when it does finally come, I'll be ready!
