Warning: dental talk ahead…read more About nine years ago, I had my top two wisdom teeth out. They'd emerged through the gum, they weren't particularly bothersome, but they were crowding my mouth a bit, so out they came. It was a relatively easy surgery, I drove myself home, napped on the couch, and ate jell-o for two days. At the time, both of my lower wisdom teeth were far below bone and gum, and I was told that if they stayed there, they could be left alone indefinitely. Ahh, but did they stay put? I think you know the answer to that. No, the lower right one started to come through, and starting a couple years ago I was told they should come out soon. Finally, after getting decent dental coverage, I decided it was time. This is the oral surgeon my dentist referred me to, so I didn't have much say in the matter, but it's close to home, which I definitely appreciate. After my regular dentist's dated office, I was pleased to see that this building is modern and comfortable. Nice waiting room with a couch and leather chairs, and while there was no TV to distract me in the exam room, I was able to listen to music on my phone to distract myself. The assistant/hygenist was very nice, she explained what was happening and asked if I was OK a few times (I may have looked a little nervous?). The oral surgeon, Dr Forfar, was pleasant and efficient. He looked at my x-rays and decided only the right one needed to come out; the left one is not hurting anyone and the root is near a nerve. I was very happy to hear that, since I'd been dreading the left side more. Cut to 20 minutes later, I was outta there, with a couple prescriptions, a post-op folder, and a checkup appointment for the following week. While I will never be a fan of dental work, I have to say Dr Forfar's office made the whole experience about as good as it could be, and if you need to have work done, it's as good a place as any. (Note: they also have offices in Wheaton and Schaumburg.)

Hi everyone - I had a lot of bad experiences with dentists when I was a kid. I had braces in the…read more70's and many extractions that went with it. So after my braces came off I never followed up with regular care. My parents both lost their teeth in their mid 50's. When I noticed the same kind of detrimental changes in myself, I still avoided the dentist. And things got worse. I've known Dr. Provenzale since High School. In fact, we went to the same College as well. I remember him working after school and summers in his Dad's dental office, doing lab work. If anyone was born to providing dental care, it might be him. Finally, after losing many teeth, I could take it no more and I made an appointment with Dr. P, whom I hadn't seen in many years. We came to a treatment plan for extraction of the dozen or so teeth I had remaining, and dental implants. Dr. P helped me work through my extreme dental anxiety, and at all times I felt like I was in talented and compassionate hands. His whole office is full of cheery dental professionals who made me feel better. The surgeries were not easy, and the process took almost a year with the healing and bone integration of the implants, but the result is well worth it. I have beautiful rock solid teeth, whiter and straighter than I ever had naturally. And most importantly to me, I don't have to deal with the depressing chore of removable teeth. At all times though, I was confident that Dr. P was at the helm and in charge. Being awake during the surgery, of course, I was never anxious or worried. Rather quickly I was able to put my anxiety aside and look forward with Dr. P to the eventual result, which I'm now enjoying! I am more proud of my teeth now than at any time since my braces were fresh off at 16. Dr. Provenzale is leader in the field of implant dentistry and is the President Elect of the national professional organization. I would recommend him without reservation.

Because of that positive experience, I brought my 9-year old son in today to have a tooth removed. My son has some special needs - he has severe ADHD, a learning disability and intense anxiety about pain. During our consultation with Dr. Scherer last month, I informed him of this and explained that my son has anxiety and fear (somewhat disproportionate to a normal level) when it comes to pain. I said, he will be VERY afraid and wI'll likely cry. I asked Dr. Scherer what he could do to help alleviate the fear. Answer: a child's dose of Valium the night before and morning of, and either laughing gas or IV sedation. I assumed those would be coupled with some understanding and a little empathy and maybe compassion for a terrified CHILD. OMG!!!! NOTHING could be farther from that. Dr. Scherer showed no empathy or compassion. Basically, he scared my son even more by saying "We can either do this now, here - or in the hospital." He demonstrated no care or understanding that my son was terrified. In fact, Dr. Scherer's demeanor was brusque, curt and slightly aggressive. He was unkind in that he used my son's fear against him instead of found or saying ANYTHING to try to allay his fear... even a little. My son was being brave and 'keeping it together' until we were told that I wasn't allowed to go into the room to hold his hand. Per Dr. Scherer, APPARENTLY, having a parent in the room makes the situation worse. Ok, maybe. I'll never know. But, I never expected the callous, brusque manner of Dr. Scherer today. I don't understand why this "hard-a$$" approach was necessary or appropriate for a scared, terrified kid with cognitive challenges. Shame on you, Dr. Scherer.

I wasn't at all thrilled with the one recommendation I received, so I came to Yelp and was not disappointed! I was hoping for a highly rated dentist in walking distance, and Tower Dental seemed to check all my boxes. Online registration, quick and friendly staff, clean modern facility (it's a lot bigger than it looks from the street!) with the latest technology - all good starts. But the proof is in their actual performance, and there they SHINE! Anna was my hygienist, and she was the most efficient and gentle I have ever had. Ever. Due to circumstances, I had gone over a year since my last checkup and cleaning, so I knew there would be extra work for her and likely a bit extra "trouble" for me... OMG yes, it took longer than usual, but she took great care of me. Dr. Kats joined us when all that was complete and I was happy to hear that my good dental health continues. Dr. Kats is a warm and professional dentist whom I would recommend even based on our short acquaintance, but his overall practice receives my immediate and unconditional endorsement!
