We flew into Marathon airport from Alabama and South Carolina, and got picked up by one of the hosts, and we loaded onto a boat to the island. We were floored by how amazing the place was, how well thought out and well built it was, and the outstanding views, beaches and other amenities. Everything was solar powered, and there was plenty of power for our needs. We have been back three more times over the years, and each time it is even better than before. Seabird Key is a vacation experience that you will never forget. Great restaurants nearby, a seafood market if you want to cook at the island, and the fishing is great. Snorkeling and diving are as good as anywhere. Now there are very fine photos of the place to help people know what to expect, so there should be no hesitation in booking a stay there. We met the owners, and they are wonderful people who know how to put it all together for your enjoyment.

We had a pleasant stay at Refuge at the Reef. It wasn't perfect but then again how many vacations…read morego perfectly? Numerous positives about the house and three minor issues. The host responded quickly to our questions and concerns. The expensive waterfront property is beautiful and well furnished. Our bed in particular was so comfy and we loved how the adjoining bathroom connected to the pool deck. The pool was excellent. Clean, warm, and an ideal size and depth. Adequate lounge chairs lined the pool along with a comfy large hammock and two tables. The umbrellas were broken (from before we arrived) so we usually sat under the tiki hut. The house had adequate bathrooms, bedrooms, and sitting areas for our family. Dogs are allowed for extra fees. The house conveniently has two refrigerators and adequate amenities. It just needs some more kitchen and pool towels. A binder is provided that includes adequate information and recommendations. The main issue was the lawn. The Florida keys already has a major bug issue without overgrown lawns making it worse. We could barely sit outside without getting bit, especially later afternoon. Ants were across the kitchen counter when we arrived. Eventually they did mow the lawn and spray for ants and mosquitos. This significantly reduced the pest problem. Don't forget the bug spray! The dryer also didn't work. They sent a maintenance worker over to confirm our report that it didn't work and that was it. The air conditioning is uneven so half the house is too cold while the other side is too hot. The left side of the house, where the kids rooms are is the colder side. The right side of the room stays pretty hot and thankfully these rooms have ceiling fans.

The description does not give the true description of the house. The main house has only 2 bedrooms. The car port was made into 2 bedrooms. There are no TVs in those bedrooms. You have to go outside to use a bathroom in one of the bedrooms. There is only 1 outlet in those bedrooms. I took a downstairs bedroom and it was awful. We left early. Upon arrival we called to try and get another house with no success. The top floor was top notch. The 2 rooms outside of the main house were dirty and bugs everywhere. We bought bug spray that only helped for a few days. Large ants crawling everywhere, ceilings, floors, everywhere. It was so gross.

First the advertised pictures looked fabulous. Looked forward to our FIRST visit to the Keys. 6 adults and 3 children travel from western New York, 2 adults from west central Ohio. Early departure for all travelers. My wife and I from Ohio arrive first to Miami around noon and travel the annoying journey to marathon and arrive around 6pm after doing some grocery shopping to prepare for the arrival of the others in our party so they could have a nice meal. We pull up to the property and behold there are people in the back partying away. We talk to them and they inform us that the property they booked was booked so they got moved to this property (so if that was double booked how far back does the double booking go) and was told that WE were not arriving until Saturday! Here we go. I contacted the others in our group who were still on the journey from Miami who in turn contacted the rental agent Karen who informed them she would get to the bottom of this. So my wife and I at this time are waiting for any news with groceries in hand. Luckily in an ice filled cooler. 2 hours go by and no word yet so I decide that we need to get a place to sleep and relieve some stress And rent a room for the night. As soon as I pay for the room we get notified that the agency has found a place for us to spend 2 nights and it's and upgrade but we have to out because the owners nephew is coming in on Saturday so we can't stay there and need to move back to our original booked property. . so the party with the children go to the temp house and we stay at our hotel for the night and move in the temp house the next day. Getting a room was a good idea because one of the bedrooms wasn't even cleaned in the temp house and the cleaning crew didn't show up until like noon the following day. And took them like six hours to clean it. The place was huge. Raul, the pool boy did come in and clean the pool so that was a plus. The temp house had no propane in the tank and was informed that it won't be filled till the following Wednesday. Great for owners nephew. Obw the temp house is up for sale if anybody's looking for a $6 million property in marathon. I wouldn't pay more than 5.5 million for it needs a lot of work. Then we all move all the stuff out on Friday and move into the original house. What a cluster F...! When we finally get into the original booked property we are surprised at how different it looked from the pictures on the website. The original booked property was relatively clean. The pool Had no chemicals in it. The skimmer was shut off. no umbrellas on the patio. There was one, but it looked like the wind got a hold of it and tore it all up. There was a big table outback on the patio, which we moved around to place in the shade so we could have some shady areas to sit in during the day. That was the only table on the patio. Raul, the pool boy, did come in on the day prior to our departure and cleaned the filthy pool and put some chlorine in it. We contacted the concierge of the rental management company about the umbrella and the pool the next day after our arrival and was told that something would get done and nothing got done! Finally, I would like to thank vacation rentals of the Florida Keys for making our first visit to the keys such a miserable one that this will be our last one. and being so unresponsive and having trying to provide some customer service. And just a message to the property owners, beware of who your agents are. I don't feel that your properties are being managed very well. You should look into them from time to time.

Example: beds were very uncomfortable, even my child complained as there were springs poking up from the mattress. Mattresses and pillows had yellow stains. One shower had no water pressure, the other the hot and cold were mixed up and my daughter burnt herself. The second bathroom sink was clogged, the vanity had water damage bubbling and peeling. The grout was not completed as well. The pots, pans and plates were peeling the coating and will end up in your food. The stove was overheating. The 4th bedroom didn't have central air, it had a mini split but it was not functioning so that room was unbearable to sleep in... add the fact that it was also the laundry room so made it even worse if you wanted to do laundry. The utility room was right in the middle of the kitchen and dining area and was so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation with people in the same room. The rental company didn't care about our concerns in the least. They said we should have brought every problem to their attention when we noticed it and they would send people out to fix the issues. I'm sorry but I came here to be on vacation and relax. I don't want to spend my entire time emailing about issues and coordinating times for workers to be in our space repairing the house during our vacation. We spent a lot of money on this house to celebrate my mom and this house did not meet our expectations. We have been coming to Marathon for many years and paid less for houses in much better conditions than this.
