Average place with a long line. This place has some serious sanitation issues with pigeons flying in and out of the kitchen. The people serving food had ash all over their hands & didn't wash them or wear gloves. The food is average & not worth the line. Stay away and get socca at a better place that is cheaper, cleaner & tastier.

Don't believe the hype about this place. It is decidedly below average. The socca is tasteless and mutilated by the server. It comes out looking like a mess. It's texture is mushy and it's also cold. The onion bites were full of oil and had no flavour. The onion tart had dry bread and the onions themselves weren't great. The apple tart was the only thing that was ok. And that's only because they mostly tasted like straight up apples. Be aware as well that if you want to be in the seated area next to the food place it is mandatory that you buy drinks from the bar. We didn't know this and were told by the waiter only after we had sat down and ordered all our food to "eat here". Another way for them to squeeze your tourist dollars out of you. Go to Chez Pipo instead. You will not be disappointed there.

Convenient location in old Nice to try socca, one of the local specialities. (Fried chick pea flour product). Sooo yummy when it's piping hot! Lots of other niçoise specialties too like stuffed peppers and pizza. What they don't tell you is that there's a mandatory beverage if you sit down - I don't have an issue with that, but they need to tell you that if they're giving you a choice of takeaway or eating at their tables!

My guidebook mentioned socca of course and even talked about this establishment in particular. So while we were strolling around town I was telling my boyfriend that we should go find the place for a casual dinner. He was already hungry though and asked if we can stop somewhere for a snack. He sees the stalls here and suggests we stop here. We see they have socca and were like 'oh cool' but eventually realize we had stumbled upon Chez Rene Socca after all! We had a laugh about it, picked a table, and got a plate of socca as well as a few other small plates of food and washed it down with rosé. The food is good and inexpensive and trying out this regional specialty should definitely be part of your trip.

The prices are good and the socca is yummy and crisp while it's hot, but you'll have to stand on line for it. Then you find a seat and a waiter to order a drink to go with it. I do not recommend the pissaladiere which was cold. Stick with the socca here.

The highlight was the local figs, feta and heirloom tomato appetizer. All 3 were amazing, and he covered them in a delicious black-olive olive oil that really came through in a fantastic way. We also got a delicious pesto pasta with homemade pasta and (you guessed it) high end olive oil. This was quite good as well. The owner was extremely kind, the service was fast and pleasant, and he truly looked to enjoy sharing his craft. It's a small homey restaurant on a crowded part of old town, but don't let that scare you away, definitely worth stopping by when you're in Nice!

Pesto spaghetti was cooked perfectly and had a mild flavor. Tiramisu was probably one of the best I have ever had, even better with the olive oil. The olive oil itself was a standout addition. Service- Nadim (owner) was lively and very attentive. A Nice Old Town celebrity chef :) Ambiance- Italian hole in the wall. I would highly recommend this place and I am looking forward to returning. Very small menu and you must make reservations in advance as the place only sits around 10 people. Open for lunch. Euro only.

Make reservations ahead of time (it's easy to do online) because this place will fill up for dinner. They have 4 appetizers to choose from, about 5-6 entrees and about 7-8 desserts to choose from, and the prices are reasonable for dinner: 24€ for plat + entree or plat + dessert, and 29€ for the 3 courses. Entrées: - Velouté de topinambour / Jerusalem artichoke soup - This soup was super, super creamy and buttery. I don't want to know how much cream and/or they put in here - it was good, but very rich. There was a piece or two of bacon, and the soup was tasty. - Trilogie de betteraves / Beets cooked three ways - I was looking for something healthier to eat, and was happy this was on the menu. I wasn't sure what to expect with this dish, other than it was beets cooked three ways. There was one little dish of beet salad with green onions or scallions, a small beet poached or roasted, and a beet purée that went well with the bread. I would recommend this appetizer if you want something on the lighter/healthier side and different. Plats: - Risotto with asparagus and tomatoes - My husband ordered this and it was good but not outstanding. He added the 2 pieces of seared foie gras for 5€ which made the dish better; I think it would have been a bit bland without the foie. The asparagus was very fresh and the risotto was on the lighter side which was nice. - Salmon with Cajun seasoning and leeks - This was different than what you'd normally find in a French restaurant since I've never seen Cajun spiced things before. The salmon was a little on the small side, but it was still good and the caramelized leeks on the side were a really perfect compliment. This dish was tasty and really good, but just a bit on the smaller side compared to all the other main dishes that were meat-based (from what I saw other diners getting) We were full so we skipped dessert, but it looked pretty good - they had things like a chocolate lava cake, a praline crème brûlée, spéculos tiramisu, and financier with a passion fruit center. Overall, a good meal that won't break the bank and that has a good selection of things on the menu. More heavier " comfort food " than lighter fare, and slightly less traditional French. The ambiance was very casual - it almost felt like you were eating in a graffiti park with dim lighting and metal walls, but overall, we had a decent meal at a reasonable price. The waiters here all spoke English well and it seemed most of the clientele were tourists.

We ordered the octopus salad and it was a very generous portion with an incredibly fresh tasting grilled octopus. It was a perfect size to share or you could have it as a light entree. Menu is small but what they do, they do very well. They have both indoor and patio seating. Aside from the tasty food the most memorable thing here was the wonderful service. We were seated right away and had a nice bread bowl with oil and balsamic vinegar to start as well as drink orders placed. This is not the place to order drinks but they do have quite a few non alcoholic drink options -juices, soda, etc. Overall I'd highly recommend checking this place out for lunch or dinner.

I ordered the sole, which was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. My friend had what they described as a clam linguini (which was actually more of a spaghetti). I tried some, and we both agreed that the dish came up short because it was missing something - maybe garlic? Despite the lack of favor in my friend's dish, but entrées portions were very generous, and our server recommended a very nice bottle of local red wine which we both very much enjoyed. We also shared a plate of specialty ham, which unfortunately was way too salty for either of us to have more than a few bites. Bottom line: Exceptional service and great prices. We enjoyed our visit enough that we might give them another try the next time we find ourselves in Nice.
