Great variety of local Nice dishes! Very "nice" indeed. We got the Pisaladieres which we loved since we are big fans of caramelized onions. Of course, we got the famous Socca - we got the green onions and sardines ones, both of which were freshly prepared and excellent. For dessert, we got the famous Tourte. Apparently it is made out of spinach but it tasted very sweet and not really like vegetables. We also got a Panache, which is a mix of lemonade and beer. A nice and quick spot to get your niçoise fix in! I love that their socca come with additional ingredients, like cebettes (green onions), and it reminds me of Taiwanese green onion pancakes. I wish their hours are longer (open earlier in the day) and there are few more options for food (and for kids). read more

The Quick: Great socca but frustrating experience. Insanely slow service, can't even pay when you want to leave, very small portion making it more expensive than everywhere else. No "to go" option and staff was a disaster. The Details: Service in France s*cks, I get it... but this place takes the cake. If you can convince them to let you get socca to go and don't mind paying double the price do it! Not a huge price/- 6 euro for double portion as it's tiny, instead of 3 euro elsewhere. Socca is the easiest snack to eat while exploring Nice, here it's an hour and a half ordeal, not worth it for me. Our tour guide had recommended us to try socca, a pancake made with chickpeas that was a popular food item of Nice. This restaurant had it on their menu and seemed to be the nearest from where we were so we chose this place. The socca was crunchy and was good. A bit bland aside from the chickpea taste, a flavor my companion wasn't all that into. While everything on the menu seemed to be quite inexpensive, the portions are barely filling. read more

Really cute place to sit outside during the day. We arrived 15 mins after it opened and had to wait extra (30 mins) for the socca because the chef was not in yet. Luckily other things on the menu were able to keep is appetizer in the meanwhile. The place definitely got crowded quick! The socca and the pissaladiere is a must try. The socca was crunchy and super savory I wish I had access to this to munch on weekly! We had the pepper and the cheese one - both great! These are all small portions, so it means you can try more! Although you think it's super good deal when you first look at the menu, for a meal to fill your belly it ends up being similar to a regular main. I think service can be more friendly but definitely efficient and acceptable. Definitely recommend and a must try when in Nice. 4.5/5* read more

While in Nice a few weeks ago with the bf, we decided that we ought to try out some unique Nicoise dishes, and this place came up for us on Yelp. We decided to try it out and while there, we were alerted that the regular socca would be ready in about an hour's time. Since we were willing to try some of the other variants, there was no wait. I tried their pissaladiere and the bf got their simple socca with a mesclun salad on the side. We also got an order of their tomato and artichoke tartinade spreads. Now, I guess the price points were an indicator of how small the portions would be, but the best way that I could describe the portion sizes here would be tapas-sized. We had finished our respective meals, but were still slightly hungry. Our food was fine, but our respective flatbreads, for lack of a better collective term, came out kind of lukewarm. I'm not sure if that's how socca or pissaladiere are normally served, but admittedly, it was not as appealing to our American palates. If you didn't get a chance to actually go to this restaurant and wanted to try out some socca before heading back to your respective city/town, you could order at their NCE airport location, so there is that opportunity as well. I mean, for 3 Euros or even less, you should at least try some of this humble Nicoise dish. read more

The hype this place has got is absolutely warranted. I'd had socca was a dish specific to the region and worth trying. I'd earlier tried some from a vendor in old Town and was at a loss over why people seemed to like this dessert. Saw all the raves of this place so went to check it out. This place fills up FAST! I luckily got there at 5:45PM just before the crowd from 6 started flooding in. Place was full in no time and others were waiting. I got the socca and a glass of rose to go with it of course. Out of every restaurant I tried on my trip to Nice, I'd say that Chez Pipo had the most authentic food. I had found it even before coming to the city and my host was in complete agreement that I should try it. The first sign of impending success was that the staff was extremely understanding of my hurry, as I had to get to the airport to leave for Germany in about three hours, and made it a point to serve us quickly without compromising on the food at all. We were the first to arrive and thus ate the very first socca made for the day, and it was incredibly crunchy and fresh, like a perfect french fry, potato chip, or anything of the like. This is the sort of thing you could eat all day long and will forever be the standard by which socca is judged. And yet we also found the pissaladière very tender and not overly crispy or doughy, with a mild flavor from the onions and anchovies on top. The mystère for dessert was also incredibly well fashioned with crumbled pieces of hazelnut on top not once interfering with the texture of the frozen ice cream and pastry, or the meringue buried inside to represent the titular "mystery." It is one of the most unique and tasty desserts I've had in some time and I'd gladly order it again next time I visit Nice. For that matter, everything at this place was perfect. It isn't fancy, it's basically a Niçoise tapas house that concentrates on a few classics and has perfected them, and that is why you come. This could not have been a better way to finish my trip to Nice, and to France in general. read more

My first and only socca experience in Nice, which is a popular dish in this particular city. The restaurant was small and had that older rustic vibe like most restaurants in Europe. We went with the black and green Tartidanes, which were good but a bit on the salty side. They are served with hard bread, crouton like. I think I would have preferred just regular style baguette bread. Apparently the socca takes some time to make as there was a 20 minute wait for the stuff. While waiting for the socca, one of the employees went on a French yelling rant that was rather dramatic. Even the other French patrons and employee's were a bit bothered by this guys child-like tantrum. He then went into the kitchen, throwing dishes and proceeded to yell. We ended up rushing and needing to take our socca to go, but we were kindly accommodated and within a few minutes, we had pipping hot socca in a to-go bag. It was perfect. It was thin, crispy, salty, and so satisfying. I love that this regional delicacy is naturally vegan, and that I could participate by eating at the best socca joint in all of Nice. First things first.. The socca is delish! It's crispy yet soft and flavoursome but not overwhelming. The onion focaccia was also a highlight. The bread was warm and fresh and the onions were plentiful. We also ordered the aubergine and sundried tomato croutons.. This was just ok. A lot of the croutons were burnt and the portion sizing of the dips was a bit small for the amount of croutons you were given. Service was great. The waiters were very lovely. We arrived just after one pm and we were lucky enough to get the last free table for two. Because the dish was so popular we also had to wait for thirty minutes before our socca was ready. Socca. Get the socca. I was told by my host that Nice is a city known for it's socca. My host also told me that he wasn't a big fan of it. We got food at some random other joint that just happened to have some socca so we ordered it and he was right in saying that it'd be kind of bland. The next night I was walking alone looking for food and just happened to walk past Chez Pipo. I saw a cook pull a giant pan of socca out of a hell-fire oven. I was memorized by the piping hot platter of fresh socca. It was an omen (I've been reading 'The Alchemist'). The socca tasted like the omen foretold it would. The rest of the food was average, though. I went back and told my host about it and he said he had heard of it and that it's probably the most famous place for socca in the city, but that he hadn't tried it. So that explains it. Never judge a food by a bad restaurant. Come here and get the socca to understand what it's all about. read more

Unsure of where to go eat when we arrived in Nice, we consulted good ol' Yelp to see what was good around old Nice. After being rejected by a few restaurants because they were fully booked on weeknights and closed on weekends, we decided to give this place a try as they are famous for their Socca - a specialty dish in Nice. We sat out in the patio and was quickly greeted by the waiter. We got the Socca (chickpea pancake) and the Pissaladiere (focaccia with caramalized onions and anchovies). We also got a glass of Rosé which was very refreshing but the glass is quite small. The spread we got with our toasted slices of bread as a complimentary starter was really good too (eggplant and tomato spread). Very chill and the staff was really nice and patient despite our French not being the greatest. It's not a place you'd go for dinner though as there's no dinner food but a good place to just chill with friends to snack and drink. read more

The first time I came to Nice in 2009 I wasn't a big fan of socca. When I came back in April 2011, I just had to try it again because it is so specific to this city. I'm so happy I did! This restaurant is a bit of a walk from Central Nice and Old Nice, but my God is it worth it. The socca is hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked with a crispy brown top. Pair it with the rosé and you have a classic Niçois combination. We also tried the onion tart, and it was fantastic. This was the first time we had ever asked for another round of everything. This is the best socca of Nice! the socca is a typical local dish made of cheek peas and olive oil. It has to be thin and crispy yet never dry. You have to add a lot of pepper and use your fingers to eat it. At pipo, you'll always have to queue to get your portion, but this is really worth it. A Niçois institution, it's likely that this place really does serve the best socca in town cooked to perfection, thin, crispy (just a little tender in the middle). It's something of a victim of its own success, though, as the waits stack up; in the tourist season expect to wait for a table, and then your drink, and then your food. And I mean wait like a half hour for the table, ten minutes for your drink, and half an hour for your food. Service is however polite and friendly, and if the food weren't worth the wait, people wouldn't do so. It's great value three of us ate enough to satisfy (with wine, no dessert) for around EUR15 per head. So, if you're trying to cultivate patience as part of a self-improvement course, this is definitely the place to come. the best socca in nice. socca is like a pizza made from chickpeas. nothing beats the brick oven where they make the socca in... it's not only fresh and piping hot...but it leaves the top crust a nicely charred flavor. do yourself a favor and try it with a bottle of rose. the best combination ever. opens for dinner service only around 5:30pm. it's quite a distance from Old Town but WELL WORTH the trip my friend.... last thing to note... socca appears to be like pizza...which means people here have a preference...if you like chez pipo (the crust being crisp and charred) then you won't like chez rene socca which is much softer and has almost no crust. it's more of a mushy texture. i'm a ny style pizza type of gal... i like em thin and crispy, while still gooey and soft in the middle.
