Next it had a walk in shower with an actual door on the shower and a door on the bathroom. Small miracles in today's day and age! The downside is especially for a Premium line, all the furniture besides the bed are in bad shape and need to be replaced ASAP. Hotel has a restaurant and bar. Never saw anyone eating there but plenty of drinks were poured. Prices for DC lobby bar were...high. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Morning breakfast was a lavish hot buffet. The staff is great especially Sahai. They have some hot appetizers in the evening from 5-7 pm and managers reception on Tuesday evening. Hyatt Centric Old Town Alexandria, Virginia…read more When Bruce Springsteen announced he and the E Street Band would be performing at Nationals Stadium in D.C., I reached out to family and friends to see if they could be in town for the show. When my sister responded that she could make the show I immediately looked for a hotel in Old Town Alexandria (VA). I've lived in Alexandria for 14 years and believe we're well served by the hotels operating locally. Because she would be arriving from New York on Amtrak, I looked for hotels in Alexandria that are within walking distance of the King Street Metro station. There's an Embassy Suites, a Hampton Inn, a Hilton, and a Hyatt Centric, all within a five-minute walk from the Metro station. Right from the start the experience was a good one. My reservation was quickly recognized, as was my membership in the World of Hyatt, Hyatt's loyalty program. I was able to cover the cost of two nights ($580.92, including taxes, total for the two nights) when I checked my sister into the hotel. The hotel is perfectly located for using the Metro bus and rail lines (a five minute walk to Metro's Yellow and Blue lines and bus lines) - including the bus that will take you across the river to the MGM Grand Hotel in Oxon Hill, Maryland. There's also a free bus and trolley circulator and free DASH buses that all share a bus stop directly across the street from the hotel. The bar is well stocked and staffed by friendly and courteous bar staff. There's a valet service (best to check first about the cost - I think it was $45 per night but I didn't need it so I'm not sure I have the price right). The Hyatt Centric Old Town is probably the newest of the national brand hotels located near the King Street Metro station. It's clean, reasonably priced for the area, and as far as I can tell it's a safe and secure option for visitors to the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia).

I was looking forward to my stay at the Hyatt Centric but was sorely disappointed…read more The first problem was that the photo on Hyatt's web page depicted a large, handsome castle-like building, but when I arrived the hotel was nothing like that. It is a boutique hotel in a non-descript building. So, that was immediately one star off for false advertising. I would not be staying in a castle after all. It went downhill from there. I arrived in the middle of the afternoon, but there was noone at the desk. Completely empty. I stood there wondering what to do. I could have gone across the street to the Hampton, which in retrospect was the correct instinct. Then, I spied a young lady in the lobby and it occurred to me that if I seduced her, then I could stay in whatever room she had. A third option was that I could walk around the desk and check myself in if I could decipher their computer system. While weighing these options a security guard emerged from somewhere and went into the offices and returned with the desk clerk who was a disheveled GenZ not even wearing a tie and with food in his beard. When I got to the fifth floor I could see something was amiss because the door where my room should be was actually a door to a tiny entranceway with two doors inside of it. I soon discovered the reason for this bizarre arrangement: the room was once a normal corner suite, but they had split it into two small rooms. Consequently, my "deluxe" room was a tiny 200 square foot apartment. I happened to have a ruler in my briefcase, so I actually measured it: 10' x 20'. At this point the astute reader would be wondering, "How could you have a king-sized bed in a 10' x 20' room?" The answer is that it was not a real king-sized bed as advertised but a California king. So, a guest over 6' tall would not fit in this bed. Everything in the room had been downsized to squeeze into this tiny space that would make a Motel 6 room look large by comparison. My next move was to open the curtains because the troglodyte maids (where do they get them?) followed the usual practice of closing all the curtains to make the room into a cave. However, this proved impossible because stops had been deliberately been installed to prevent the curtains from being opened more than half way??!!! It was becoming clear this was going to be bad. The desk was correspondingly small, like everything else, only about 16" deep. Of course there were no plugins in the desk. The only ports in the whole room were a single type A nd type C in one of the munchkin-sized end tables. The refrigerator was likewise just a cube fridge, not even a minifridge, and was 40-degrees. Obviously, there was no minibar or sodas--you are just dreaming if want service like that. The whole place was done up in a kitschy, highly effeminate style as though that were some pretext for making everything else inconvenient, small and impractical. For example, there were three brightly colored coat hooks in the shape of the rear end of a dog. "Oh, gee, that is so cute! It totally makes me forget what a crappy room this is!!" If I could just transform myself into a valley girl, then it would be oh so rad. The haute design did not stop at dog asses. The super genius interior designer had the brilliant and innovative idea of improving the already miniature closet by eliminating silly non-essentials like a door and positioning the hanger bar front to back instead of side to side, so instead of being 20" long, it was only 8" deep--enough space for about 6 jackets or shirts. I was only staying 3 nights, but I still ended up laying out two shirts on the tiny coffee table because no dresser, duh. Of course, what this artistic Einstein forgot is that if you stack garments front to back, then you have remove all the other hangers to get access to a shirt or coat in the back. By now, I was ready to give the hotel one star, but decided to give the bathroom a last chance. At first, it looked bad. The toilet seat was one of those cheap, hollow plastic ones like you see in hospitals. The shower door inexplicably had no towel bar, just a minimalist pull knob. Nor was there a towel rod on the wall even though there was a good 3' of space where one could have been placed. Not only that but the lights were on some kind of system that turned them off automatically, so infuriatingly I had to be consequently turning the lights back on the whole time of my stay. At last I tried the shower and hooray! it completely unexpectedly had good water flow, so I gave it a star for that. The rest of the hotel followed the same pattern of annoyance and incompetence. For example, there was no self-service mart, just a glass display case with the snack items which had to be ordered from the (non-existent) desk clerk. I ordered a well-deserved bloody mary at the bar, but the "bartender" did not know how to make it. How can you not know how to make a bloody mary? Anyway, the lesson here: get the square footage ahead of time.

Returning around 6:15 pm nothing was done and the front desk person handed me a large black trash bag and told to collect the trash from my cans and leave the bag in the hall. Most notably, the window did not close completely, leaving a gap nearly as wide as my finger. While the first two weeknights were relatively quiet, street noise repeatedly woke me on our final night. This seems like something that should have been identified during routine room inspections. We likely would have requested a different room, but we were traveling with our daughter and had already fully unpacked before discovering the issue. The room also had several inconveniences. The safe was not charged and was unusable. While we could have asked the hotel to address it, dealing with maintenance during a vacation when you're constantly coming and going isn't how we wanted to spend our time. The shower had no ledge or footrest for shaving your legs, so women will need to sit on the shower floor to do so. The lighting system was surprisingly frustrating--there were countless switches in nonsensical locations, some needed to be flipped in a particular sequence, and even the bedside lamps lacked simple on/off switches. What should have been intuitive became unnecessarily complicated. Service was disappointing as well. One afternoon around 1:30 p.m., we returned to our room to eat lunch because the lobby was closed for carpet cleaning, only to find housekeeping had still not serviced the room. I also asked where I could find an ATM. The hotel doesn't have one, which is understandable, but the staff directed me to a nearby location that didn't actually have an ATM. In nearly 100-degree weather, that was an unnecessary inconvenience. The hotel also lacks a water bottle refill station, which has become a welcome amenity at many hotels. Additionally, the tissue and toilet paper were of noticeably poor quality--more like what you'd expect in a public restroom than at a Marriott property. As a Marriott Bonvoy Gold member, I understand that early check-in and room upgrades are never guaranteed. However, I was surprised that my room wasn't ready when I arrived at 3:15 p.m.--just 45 minutes before standard check-in--on what appeared to be a quiet weekday, and no upgrade was available. Check in experience was excellent! Liked being on the 12th floor, but seemed like I was put in an Accessibility room even though it wasn't my preference. But it was OK. The room temperature was kind of hot since it was at 75°, so had to turn it down to 65° to feel comfortable. Housekeeping was on time and did a great job while I was at work for a team seminar on Monday and Tuesday. Anyhow, dropped by the Bar down in the lobby a couple of times with my coworkers for a few drinks on Monday evening. Service was pretty good, but a little on the slower side. Maybe since there were a lot of people. Actually stopped by at 5:00 PM the first time. Then again at around 10:30 PM after going to our team Happy Hour. Drinks from the bar were well made both instances. Overall, it was an enjoyable time spending a few nights at this specific hotel! It was convenient since it was close to the Marriott Corporate office.

I also have to recognize Maxime as she has a great personality, light, easy to speak with and kind. Great customer service! I have stayed in Lebua (Thailand), jW Marriott in South Korea and other hotels and never paid an additional fee to provide a room that it is already ready as they know you will be there.
