This visit wasn't as good as past visits. No music, $250 charge (new) to sit at a firepit. They were both going full speed with no one sitting at them the entire time we were there except the family members of one of the workers. It was a holiday weekend and dead both inside and out. Also, the menu has been reduced by a lot. Servers were really nice but one could tell it was an off night for everyone. Hope this doesn't continue. I feel a little bad here, the staff was very nice and clearly overworked (see: one waitress for a large patio). But this place was almost hilariously bad. Came from an hour away because my roommate said it was great and there was reggae music and we ordered drinks that we had to wait for half and hour. Female bartender avoided taking orders and gave us dirty looks and had to ask the other bartender if she could even serve us inside when we were only getting drinks and waiting for our table. We arrived at 4:30pm and was sat at 6pm and is currently 8pm and still no food. We ordered at 6:20pm.... Why have an event if you don't have the staff to run it. staff did not explain what the wait was for and tried to avoid us and is just hanging out at chatting at tables. read more

We have been coming to Smuttynose for years. Every single time we came, everything was perfect. We'd sit and enjoy the music and take our time with a few drinks and no one rushed us. Since March-ish things have changed. The staff walked out and only a handful of the staff stayed. We we're told a new chief was hired and things should start getting back to normal. We just went back this past Saturday and now all the staff walked. The service was not good, no one knew what they were doing. Took forever to get our food and drinks and they had just one guy severing the entire restaurant. It's a shame that a great place to hang out has turned into this. What a great place to stop over when on the seacoast. We have long been a fan of their beers. We went deep sea fishing and popped in here on the way to a job in Maine. They have a great happy hour too. We arrived wind burned, cold, and hungry. Ordered each a big IPA, and then the large size chicken fingers, and the pretzel bites. The chicken fingers are some of the best I have ever eaten. The pretzel bites with beer cheese were just okay, but boy were those chicken fingers the best. The large portion of chicken finger is massive (they aint lying) We ended up eating the last couple the next day in the hotel room for breakfast, and they were still delicious cold. Staff was friendly and attentive, and caught that the pretzel bites hadn't come out with the chicken tenders. Nice location, it has outdoor seating too. The only real criticism is there only being two bathrooms on the ground floor, there was one more upstairs and that was also occupied. It can be really annoying when people in a group all decide to use the facilities at the same time, it can really back up the flow of things. read more

Have gone her many times and it has always been A+ service and food. Bad experience today. We were sitting at our table for 25 minutes and nobody came by to give us water and take our order. The hostess walked by and we told her that other tables are being served, but we were not. She did not seem to care and said she would tell the server. The server came by 5 minutes later and said he was not notified that we were his table. He tried to make up for the mishap and was good. Menu has also changed significantly. Many items like fish &chips are off the menu. The items we got were OK, but they used to be really good. I will give them another try to see if they improve or if this downward trend is the new normal for Smuttynose. read more

They don't take reservations but have call ahead seating. We had a large group so planned to eat earlier than normal. They were able to seat us, hosts were friendly and accommodating of our large group. Waiter was friendly and attentive, coming back to the table multiple times to check on us. The live music was an added bonus. Beer flights and mixed drinks were great, some creative options. Food was better than expected from a a brew pub. Wings were great along with the tortillas chip dip. We had the chicken sandwich, beef tips, and hot chicken sandwich. All very good. Especially the brussell sprouts in hit sauce side. They recently fired all of their great staff in the waves and were not prepared. Since then, the management has been horrible. The new staff are mostly nice but just ill-prepared as you can imagine. They run out of food regularly, close early and food quality is hit or miss. Ownership doesn't seem to have a clue about the business as they had a great menu and employees that made you want to go in, now just the opposite. We came from out of state to visit this area, specially for the beer. We got some of their beer in Rhode Island (some pineapple sour), and it was delicious, so we were looking forward to this visit. The restaurant is nice, and so is the service. They have daily specials, and today (Sunday) was a "buy an adult menu item for $9.99+ and get a kids meal for free". We took advantage of this and paired it with a poutine. Not super impressed by the poutine since it didn't have cheese curds and instead just had a bunch of cheese melted on the bottom of the dish, but it was still okay. The beer was delicious. You can get flights in here too. Next time we come, we will probably stick to just the tasting room, but nice location either way! read more

These aren't tenders, there are chicken tenders on steroid! Huge filets of chicken breast or cut in half to create delicious tenders coated in a crunchy, well seasoned coating. And if you like heat, they have some of the spiciest buffalo tenders this side of Buffalo. Not sure this place makes it through the summer. This place was fantastic for years but for some reason they decided to totally redo their menu in May of 2025. It's a Massive downgrade. Beer is still good but the food has went from A to C and the service is now an F. I've been twice in the last 3 weeks to give them a second chance but it's unlikely I will eat here again. The servers are trying but they just have no staff and it's clear the kitchen is massively understaffed as well. On a sunny day in June they had three servers for the whole restaurant! Which explains why we had to wait 90 minutes for a table after they quoted us 45 minutes. This place just seems "off". The whole vibe has totally changed. Really disappointed in the changes at Smuttynose since Harpoon took them over. Gone was the live bands we used to listen to while enjoying dinner. Events during the week outdoors with music have been cut back also. Bar outside by the restaurant was closed. Food was OK, wait staff were good no crowds like in years past. Harpoon is clearly cutting costs. Won't be back there again. Really too bad because I chose to go there for my 70th birthday with all my family and we had a blast. No more. Sad. read more

Smuttynose may have usurped a few other breweries in the New England area as my favorite. The wide variety of brews, the gorgeous views, and comfort food offered just pulls at my heartstrings and brings my soul nothing but joy. The location has beers to go (in cans), with drafts consisting of their standard offerings as well as a few from the SmuttLabs experimental brewery/initiative. You will not be able to get through all of the offerings, which is a shame because there are so many good options to choose from. I guess that is just a reason to make the trip back to visit, but keep in mind that the rotations will change pretty frequently (especially the labs brews). The overall space and grounds are amazingly spacious, clean, and most importantly - gorgeous. There are views everywhere and you can even play With the current state of things, the patio almost always has a wait in order to get a table and it is equipped with heat lamps and gas fireplaces in order to keep everyone cozy regardless of the weather and temperature. The menu has a fantastic blend of typical New England fare that features seafood and other menu staples as well as a number of brewpub favorites that almost every brewery features on their menus. We split a number of dishes including the fried clams, the fried pickle chips, and a black bean burger. From a side perspective we got the mac n' cheese and the tater tots, rounding out a meal that while not healthy definitely was needed after a day of outdoor activities and very little sustenance throughout the day. The mac n' cheese for me was the absolute star here, boasting an absolutely perfect and creamy three-cheese blend with a Ritz cracker crumb on top. The pickle chips were perfectly crisp and has zero soggy chips in the entire basket, then served with homemade ranch dressing which is obviously significantly better than the "tub-o-ranch" typically served with such dishes. After having the meal we did I have full confidence that you can order anything on the menu and not have a bad experience. While Smutty is looked at as a "lesser" brewery these days with all the new-age breweries popping up, sometimes these keystones of the region remain strong and around for a reason. Smutty is the kind of place that should not be overlooked because it's not the "new hotness" on all the beer boards or "up and coming" breweries. It's was a truly great experience that based off the reviews really exceeded all expectations I had. Highly recommended, this place takes it up to "11" ;) read more

It was a nice Monday night when we drive down to Smuttynose. We wanted to try another Brewery and thought why not go to New Hampshire to do it! besides, my old Army nickname was smutty sooo... It was a short jaunt from where we were staying. We made it in time to check out the store first. They had some things, but like more company stores they were short on the popular sizes sadly. We then went across to the outdoor seating place. Its a great spot with lots of tables and fire pits socially distanced out. there was enough servers that we were helped right away. We tried a couple beers each. They were all pretty solid. A couple were sold out so we may have missed the best of them. Before we left I put in an order to go. I got the Lobster club and added tater tots. when I got home and dug in I was happy to see I made a good call. The tots done perfectly. A little greasy and yet crispy. The lobster Roll, wow, so good. The bread was toasted just perfect and the lobster was of course really good. Not to mention, the price was very good too. it was well worth the drive. Grab yourself a Smutty. read more

Restaurants at breweries are always the best and Smuttynose is no exception. I haven't been here in years and I guess it's been so long that now there is a new name. It's just Smuttynose Restaurant now, and it used to be Hayseed. There is a TON of outdoor seating and they do a great job of spacing out tables. There was a bit of a wait for a table, so we were able to sit out on some Adirondack chairs and start our food and drink order while we waited. The patio area is also beautiful with so many hanging string lights and a bar set up inside of an airstream. Right now they have a summery tangerine IPA on tap and it's so refreshing and delish. For eats my hubs and I shared chicken tenders and fries and a big soft pretzel with cheese sauce. The chicken tenders were thin and crispy and came with so many tenders and fries (and this was the small portion). The pretzel was also huge. Our server was so sweet and friendly and overall it was a great experience. read more

We had a party of 20 with reservations for two fire pits for a 70th birthday party. We were greeted warmly and had Cassie as a server. The food was excellent, something for everyone! Wings and Chicken tenders got high marks! Even though the weather was iffy, we stayed warm by the fire, and cuddled in blankets that I brought along...highly recommend! We haven't been here since the fall and almost every good beer they had is gone, they have maybe 5 total bottles of liquor, every food good menu item they had is gone and replaced by subpar items, completely flat beer. We ordered the nachos since every other item we loved was scrapped from the menu, and we might as well have made them at home since they don't actually put toppings on for you and were basically mush.. For the past couple years we have visited a few times -- we loved the ambiance of the interior in the Winter and the energy of the exterior in the Summer. The live music is always a pull -- but the food and drinks were always so fun and delicious. My wife and I always looked forward to their Margaritas and Bloody Mary's. Unfortunately this past visit was one of the worst experiences ....we were told that they don't make Bloody Mary's anymore -- a severe disappointment, as Smuttynose had the best around -- and also, we aren't really sure how a full bar isn't able to make a Bloody Mary. Their Margarita was one of the worst I've ever had. It tasted like sour mix on ice. Any bar that makes a Margarita with sour mix clearly doesn't understand Margaritas. The kids had chocolate milk that came as white milk with a little bit of chocolate syrup in the bottom of their cups. Also -- they serve Pepsi products, which I suppose isn't here or there, but that alone is telling. Their menu has changed dramatically. It's always been small but packed with variety and flavor. One of our kids got the macaroni and cheese -- but really it was pasta swimming in a very loose butter/cheese juice. I ordered the wings with buffalo sauce -- which were dry, but they went right along with the theme since their carrots seemed intentionally dehydrated. Our daughter's Caesar Salad was the size of a side salad. You could fit it on a plate with an actual meal. Two people at our table got the Cubano and half of those people did not have a burned roll. We waited almost an hour for mediocre food, when people after us were served more promptly; and our server was surly and seemed as though she would rather be anywhere else. I certainly am hopeful that some of the feedback I've been seeing gets back to the right people so that we can get this place back on track. The two stars are because we're suckers for live music -- and that was on point, as always. read more
