Went for a few drinks and some Live music. The setup outside was anazing. Nicely lit and well spaced out for guests to enjoy without feeling like a sardine. The music was great, the outdoor trailer bar was efficient. Stupid me, im not a beer connoisseur and somehow ordered 2 non alcoholic beers. Haha whoops. I saw a guy nearby order chicken tenders. For the past couple years we have visited a few times -- we loved the ambiance of the interior in the Winter and the energy of the exterior in the Summer. The live music is always a pull -- but the food and drinks were always so fun and delicious. My wife and I always looked forward to their Margaritas and Bloody Mary's. Unfortunately this past visit was one of the worst experiences ....we were told that they don't make Bloody Mary's anymore -- a severe disappointment, as Smuttynose had the best around -- and also, we aren't really sure how a full bar isn't able to make a Bloody Mary. Their Margarita was one of the worst I've ever had. It tasted like sour mix on ice. Any bar that makes a Margarita with sour mix clearly doesn't understand Margaritas. The kids had chocolate milk that came as white milk with a little bit of chocolate syrup in the bottom of their cups. Also -- they serve Pepsi products, which I suppose isn't here or there, but that alone is telling. Their menu has changed dramatically. It's always been small but packed with variety and flavor. One of our kids got the macaroni and cheese -- but really it was pasta swimming in a very loose butter/cheese juice. I ordered the wings with buffalo sauce -- which were dry, but they went right along with the theme since their carrots seemed intentionally dehydrated. Our daughter's Caesar Salad was the size of a side salad. You could fit it on a plate with an actual meal. Two people at our table got the Cubano and half of those people did not have a burned roll. We waited almost an hour for mediocre food, when people after us were served more promptly; and our server was surly and seemed as though she would rather be anywhere else. I certainly am hopeful that some of the feedback I've been seeing gets back to the right people so that we can get this place back on track. The food was consistently good. Like a good place for needing dinner. I liked the atmosphere enough. No one greeted us or said welcome so at first we felt awkward. We have been back and now we just expect that. We are just there for food. read more

The restaurant is separate from the brewery. When it is warmer there appears to be a nice outdoor area with tables, chairs and fire pit. The restaurant itself is not too big, I recommend calling ahead for seating. They have a nice selection of beers. I was excited to try to key lime pie beer and I loved it. The food good, I forgot to take pictures. We especially loved their loaded tater tots. If you love breweries I recommend you check out this one. read more

Called on the phone beforehand and was told that there was plenty of seating available on the patio. Upon arriving the story changed; there was a 10-15 minute wait and a "waitlist" had to be joined on Yelp. Started at 23rd place on the "waitlist" and after an hour of waiting was still only at 12th place. Got in my car and left. Please accept this one-star rating as a token of appreciation for having wasted an hour of my Saturday afternoon. read more

While I did not eat food here, I did go for the beer. Smuttynose is a great brewery, and I was very excited to see they were local to me. The beer selection was excellent as expected and the bar had plenty of seating even though the restaurant was incredibly busy on a Sunday afternoon. They have live music outside. I opted to sit at the bar inside since there was immediate seating. There were two bartenders on duty, and both were very good and attentive, and knew everything about their beers. Will definitely go back again when in the Portsmouth area. read more

Needed a place to stop for lunch on a drive from Maine to NYC and this was perfect. It is a full restaurant at the Smuttynose brewery, so excellent beer choices of course. I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich, wife had the seafood chowder and fried Brussels sprouts and the kiddo had the "Summer Salad" with grilled chicken. All very good. Absolutely atrocious experience on Friday May 30 while the band Conniption Fits was playing. 30 minute wait for a table which wasn't bad. We could get out own drinks from the bar and take them outside while we waited but only sit at high tops so as not to confuse the waitstaff even though were many tables open. Once seated at a table where you could order food and after waiting 30 minutes we actually went inside and got a second round of drinks ourselves. Our appetizers came out before our drinks. 45 minutes in drinks finally came that we ordered. My opinion is that while this is a great outdoor venue and an awesome band, they were not equipped staff wise to handle the amount of people. There was one bartender inside and two servers outside and that is it. I felt horrible for the staff being put in this position. I feel they should not have even tried to be open given the lack of staff. Everyone was just irritated and angry and it was unfair to everyone. We will not be back. read more

Came in on a brisk fall Saturday in late October. The restaurant was busy for the lunch hour rush, but the outside was quiet, so we opted to enjoy the day. The first impression of the menu was positive. A more extensive selection of lunch items with more burger add-ons than you could possibly think of. We wanted to start with a small salad each. At $8, we ordered two, and the waitress looked at us funny, which was strange. Well, when the salad came out we finally understood. One is enough to feed a family of four! I wish she would have said something because we barely finished the equivalent of half a salad between the two of us. I had my eye on the fried fish sandwich so I ordered it. Wow, such a disappointment when it came out because there was so much oil it soaked the entire bun and pooled on the plate. It was awful, I picked through what I could but couldn't stomach it. Overall, very quaint setting, especially on a nice sunny fall day. Food was just barely average. I'll give it another shot when I'm up there again and hopefully update the review. read more

Chose this spot for a family gathering of 15 people. They were very accommodating by combining a fire pit spot with a nearby picnic table. Social distancing was achievable. Fun relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for laid back atmosphere for families or groups with dogs and or kids. Beer, cocktails, sangria are all great food is pretty good But we have to give only 3 stars due to a major miss for vegetarians and vegans. They have a bean burger pattie to top a salad on the menu but they do not actually have it in stockit. There are so many great vegan pub foods hummus veggie pita? Grilled veggie burrito or bowl? At the VERY least a vegan burger is a must. We were there on Mother's day and had fun but they were grossly understaffed. Felt so bad for our waiter. He was smiling and working very hard. The busser showed up to very rarely for support. Another waiter had a much better gig than our guy because all his tables were inshade. Our guy was in the blazing sun, all his table a hike from the kitchen, stepping over dogs and toddlers with far too many tables. Amazing resilience I appreciate it. read more

First time in Smuttynose's restaurant called Hayseed, last time we did the beer tour in the other building. Their restaurant though was great I wish we came sooner! We sat at the bar though so I can't really speak to the menu but their pretzel and cheese sauce was bomb and we got a beer tasting and their selection is excellent! We ordered a fish & chips. That single order for a single (but sizable) piece of unnamed fish. Golden crunchy batter. But both of us found the flavor utterly bland. It was like eating slightly moist paper, without the wood flavoring to entice consumption. We threw over half of it away. No idea what sort of fish, but tasteless fish, regardless of golden batter will not entice us back. read more

Good food and good value. The beers and selection of drinks was great too. The Bartender was very helpful with selecting beers and food. The only thing I wanted to say is the place needs a good cleaning - I sat by the stairs and the hair and dust grossed me out and I had to move. Then, the floor trim near the bathroom was very dirty. I've been here before, but years ago for lunch. This time around it was to catch the Red Sox game and enjoy some chatter with my parents over beers. We waited a little bit of time before someone greeted us at the door and readied a table for us but that was ok since we got a nice 3 top by a window. Our server seemed pretty introverted and wasn't all that friendly but he was patient and prompt in beer delivery. Smuttynose makes great beer and Hayseed has a good vibe - including outdoor seating. read more

60-75 min wait on the list. Ok, no problem. Then 30 minutes to get a beer at the bar while waiting. After 125 min in the waitlist, they said "we're not sure when we can seat you. Our kitchen is small". So not worth it. Update: nearly 3 hours after adding our name to waitlist. Place is almost empty. No food has come out of kitchen in 15 min. We ordered 30 min ago. They "aren't sure what to say" but are closing soon. Literally worst restaurant service ever. read more
