Imagine this workday if you will. You're heading into work. Walk in, put your backpack down to see what's doing. AND, I'm driving to the tiny town of Realitos, Texas. I think the school there had three short busses to pick up all K-12th. Flash forward if you will and I'm headed back searching for lunch. It's already noon and Alice is the closest "biggest" town on the route. Not a place where Yelp is gonna recommend much so I searched for upscale French. Sadly, there wasn't any. Guess Tex-Mex will have to suffice instead of Whataburger. We roll up and I'd guess busiest place in town. Lots of oil company vehicles and trucks that also support that industry. My work 2500 fit right in. Seated we're offered two types of chips with the house made salsa. Traditional corn tostadas and even fried flour tortillas cut into triangles. Refried beans too? I've seen this before from hopeful chain places in Houston. Order in as I want to get home sorta on time. Friendly service but he blanked on me asking to sub the sausage on the platter for a few extra shrimp. Finally, my sizzling plate of (entire restaurant please look at what's nearly on fire) arrived. Chicken, Shrimp, Beef, and Sausage along with it's support plate of Pico, Guacamole, Spanish Rice, and Charro Beans. Although house made the Flour Tortillas were a bit thick. I ordered Sour Cream; considered ordering cheese too. I made a huge first taco while enjoying the sides. Second tortilla I made with all shrimp. Loaded as many ingredients into it as I could but ended up ditching the tortilla and finished the fillings. Leftovers made it from Alice, Texas all the way back to Driftwood, Texas. read more

We were charged 11 extra dollars on our tab and the only explanation we got was "the machine charges a fee for credit card charges." The food has also declined in quality. Yum! Definitely worth stopping to eat. Generous portions. Friendly family atmosphere. A little loud but that's because of all the people, not because of loud music. Busy restaurant but the service was quick. Homemade chips came with salsa and a dip (not sure what exactly it was) and we ate it all. My breakfast plate of eggs and shredded beef had beans and potatoes. Cooked perfect. My dining companion's chicken fajitas plate was a big portion. He only ate half of it. Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. I have been visiting this place on business trips over the years, and it keeps getting better. Had the matamoros tacos today with a side of rice, a home run. Our first time to eat there after a funeral it was 9pm the food was good, the waitress waiters were good. after we ate someone turned the music on so loud we had to leave. we wondered why?? couldn't they just come over and ask us to leave if they're closing?? rude rude rude. we went outside so they started turning lights off we couldn't see. that's to bad they acted this way. will never go back! read more

I have been eating at El Charro for years and have never been disappointed. The service is always excellent Stopped in this morning for breakfast with a friend. I had the sizzling iron.platter with sausage, chorizo, potatoes, tomatoes/onion, cheese and 2 eggs on top. It was delicious and is now my favorite. Also, the breakfast sauce that they serve with the meal is so good that I bought a quart to take home. This is a family owned restaurant that knows how to take care of their patrons. read more

When you are driving between the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio there are few dining options besides fast food establishments. A Yelp search on the smart phone during our drive turned up Restaurant El Charro as we approached Alice from the South. Restaurant El Charro does require that you pull off of US 281 for a few miles to eat at this Oasis in no man's land. Ours was probably a 3.5 star experience but given that there aren't many obvious alternatives for a couple of hundred miles I'm rounding up to 4 stars. The restaurant is in an older builder with multiple dining areas. It's situated between a highway and a railroad. I think some of the dining areas may be for special events. When we arrived on a Sunday afternoon for late lunch it was packed in the main dining room. Again there aren't many choices in Alice and this place is obviously a place the locals frequent. It appears to be a family run establishment and it seemed to me that several family members were present managing the operation. The service was prompt and friendly. No complaints. English does appear to be the second language at this establishment but we had no problems communicating. The complimentary chips and salsa were respectable. The complimentary bean dip was very good. I ordered tacos Al Pastor a la carte. I ordered three which I can easily put away at most restaurants in Austin. Not so at Restaurant El Charro. Be advised that the tacos are massive. Nearly twice the size I am used to back in Austin. They are served in large toasted flour tortillas. I don't recall being asked my preference for corn or flour. I would have preferred corn but I've never seen corn tortillas the size of the flour tortillas I was served. The the tacos Al Pastor were quite good and served in typical fashion in achiote sauce with cilantro and onions. I had a bite of my younger daughter's chicken fajita taco that she couldn't finish because it was massive also. It was served with grilled dark meat only which I don't mind but I know many people like all white meat for their chicken fajitas so be advised. The star of the show, however, was the Charro beans. These were some of the best Charro beans I have ever tasted. Absolutely delicious. So if your hungry and bored during your long trek across South Texas and want a break then Restaurant El Charro might just give you an opportunity to stretch your legs and your stomach. read more

Great food, good atmosphere. Basically at with the Sunday lunch crowd and was amazed at the portion size, taste and overall freshness of everything. Was it 'noisy'? Sure, but the good 'family and friend conversations' type of noise. Everything on the menu (pictured) looked great. My problem was narrowing down to one plate - not the sometimes frustrating thing of choosing a 'best fit'. The food came out hot, fast and fresh. The slabs of fajita steak were well seasoned and tender. The chile relleno had a good thin batter on it with a generous stuffing of cheese that melted perfectly and was not greasy at all. It was smothered in what looked to be a habanero sauce that was done in such a way that you didn't 'notice' the burn as much as the flavor. If you are in Alice, TX - this is a must stop in my opinion! read more

Me and My father go there most of time for Breakfast. They serve excellent Breakfast especially the Chilaquiles Plate is excellent! El Charro is the only place that makes awesome Chilaquiles than any other Mexican restaurants in Alice. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is nice and comfortable. Waiters were courtesy and always serving coffees and always asking to see if you are 'Okay" with your meal. During lunch time, they serve All-You-Can-Eat Buffets and refill drinks. Can't complain about their food and services. I definitely recommend anyone to try this place for breakfast. read more

Just a receipt with total. Needed one for travel expense. The owner and staff would not budge to give itemized receipt.
